It is a language onto itself, and Leonora is determined to record every little discovery in her trusted notebook, her constant companion…even when attending balls.

Drake Shaw, Marquess of Pemberton, lives a life of regret and shame. Unable to right a wrong of his past, he seeks to punish those without honor. He lives for the hunt, preying on men who dare raise a hand against those they ought to protect. Over time, Drake has developed a keen eye for a lady who has been hurt. He recognizes the look of fear and pain in her eyes and understands it for what it is: the need for revenge.
Until one day, Drake comes face to face with a young lady who surprises him at every turn. She is vulnerable and fearful, but also brave and...dauntless. Thrown off his balance, Drake soon realizes that living for revenge might no longer be all he desires.

Will she find again the strength to walk her head held high ...
It is Karate Kid meets Jane Austen!
The previous book truly left me with the feeling Leonora had been raped, and while thankfully it was not the case, it left her as much damaged, with a sensation of helplessness, of defenselessness. Like she has lost all her certainties in life, to only be this now scared creature afraid of her own shadow, a far different version of her true self before the assault. She also maybe struggles more to overcome her fears because the man behind her damaged confidence is unknown to her. If she had a face to link to her nightmares, it might have be easier to conquer her anxiety, while here, every man could be her attacker. Yet her healing journey begins slowly, one step at a time, thanks to the sense to be protected by the one man who have seen past her burden. His nearby shadow allaying her mind to rest.
This is a tale of rehabilitation, for Leonora to find again her old self. By setting her free from her fears, Drake freed her heart to its prison, giving it free rein to fall in love. But while she is eaten by her fears, he is devoured by his guilt, he resents himself for his blindness and since he tries to right in his own way the wrong he believes he must, all by himself. Yet, from the moment he meets Leonora, his life takes a new turn, she gives him a meaning to wake up every day, a living reason to continue his quest for justice, but in a different way. He is the person who will offer her the means to stand for herself, slowly with patience and respect, he builds her confidence back.
I loved how all her kin also supports her, they do not question her, they accept her with her faults and flaws.
A lovely slow burn romance of two persons who quietly fall in love with the other. 5 stars

3.5 stars, rounded up to 4 stars.
Once Upon a Temptingly Ruinous Kiss is the second book in Bree Wolf's The Whickertons in Love series and is a historical romance.
The book requires a bit of a suspension of belief as Drake is filing the role of vigilante for the ton, dueling and killing the men who harm the women in their protection. But no one knows it's him, there's just a mysterious uptick in recent duels. If you can get past that, you'll enjoy the story.
Reading both the prequel and the first book in this series, I have really like Leonora's character and so I was glad to have the opportunity to read her story and see her work toward healing. Drake is there to help her, but Leonora is at the healm to regain her sense of empowerment and independence. It's a slow-burn between them, but they become a really solid team. At times the book felt a bit long and there was a bit of the old back-and-forth of 'but what if they don't feel the same, way' but it was still a good story.
This may have just been me, but when Leonora took a stand for herself in front of an audience of eavesdropping guests at a ball it did not feel in keeping with what we have seen of her character's nature thus far in the books. Between the prequel and the first book in the series, Leonora is portrayed as shy and observant, choosing to hang back and catalogue the actions of those around her rather than be a player in the goings on. She is also portrayed as having a hard time intuiting why people behave and feel the way they do in certain social situations. So although I was not surprised that she found the courge to state her truth and control the narrative of her attack in front of her peers, I was surprised by the lengthy nature of it and how she directed it towards the women in her audience by speaking to the issue of how they are oppressed and punished within the ton while being subjected to double standards. Her speech went on for several pages and it just didn't feel like Leonora's charcater to me. I could see a small speech maybe, but this felt like a level of spotlight that didn't fit. It could have just been me, but it pulled me out of the story a little because it felt like another character had stepped in.
This was a lovely addition to the series and has been my favorite thus far. Based on Grandma Edie's meddling, it seems that the next book in the series will focus on Christina and Mr. Sharp. I'm curious to see how their story will develope considering the incrediby unflattering and elitist things she has been saying about him. _____
I would like to thank the author, Bree Wolf for sharing an eARC of Once Upon a Temptingly Ruinous Kiss with me. This is my honest review.
A story well ahead of its time, this story addresses trauma from both the perspectives of the victim and that of a family member, wrapped up in a Regency setting.
I found that the story is a nice read. I really liked the courtship between Drake and Lenora. The drama was heavy in this one. I liked that the writer had Lenora work past her fears. I think the creation of Drakes character was very well written for this story. You can call him the early version of a vigilante. Pairing Lenora and him together definitely zeros in on what the couple are working through. Good story.
This story had all my favorite tropes in it and still turned out an amazing read. The female lead is the sister of the one who we read about in the previous story. Her hero / male lead is the man we met briefly during a scene outside the estate, where we were introduced to him (and learn that the female lead in this story snuck out to see him for a certain reason).
This story deals with sexual assault and how two people come to terms - from a witness and a victim standpoint. The female lead in this book was manhandled / molested by an unknown assailant at a masquerade ball in the first book. The male lead is able to see that something is wrong with her and without knowing anything about her or who he vows to put a bullet through their eyes. Like literally, his first words are 'Who hurt you' and 'tell me who did it and I'll put a bullet between his eyes', and you know he will because we see a scene earlier of him doing just that and walking away like no big deal.
If sexual assault isn't your thing to read about in romances - as in the aftermath / handling, then you might want to be cautious. But if you wanna see a woman getting trained by a guy who is on a mission to absolutely kill everyone who ever harms a woman and tries to get away with it? Then you're gonna love it and fall in love with the moments they have together where he teaches her to be strong and find her inner warrior / self.
Since reading the previous book in the series I had been anxiously awaiting this one. However, Leonora’s story turned out to be different than what I expected. It was so much more than I thought it would be. (BTW The story is completely stand alone so you don’t need to read the previous one to understand what’s happening.) From the previous book we see Leonora as lovable with her insightful observations but more of a mouse of a young woman. Always hiding on the sidelines watching but never experiencing the life interactions around her. This book picks up the story with Leonora in a broken state due to an attack on her person by an unknown male. She’s struggling to have self confidence and not knowing if she would ever feel safe again. There is a quote near the beginning that I think sums up the course of the story well: “Perhaps she needs to be the one to unmask him, to confront him. Perhaps she won’t be able to reclaim her old self until she finds a way to stand up for herself.” And from there the story goes on to show how she gets help from Drake to stop feeling like a victim and how he empowers her start to truly live for the first time.
My expectations for the story was total damsel in distress awaiting a gentleman to come to set things right. Of course that is not really how this story goes. I’ve noticed that most of this author’s female lead characters go through a transformation that helps them be (at least in part) the hero of their own story. It’s not preachy or anything about it, just women who face hard times and come out better for it. I enjoy these type of romance stories because not only do they make me feel all mushy inside seeing a man recognize the inner strength of a woman but also they can be very inspiring. I’m talking happy tears y’all!
I loved Drake. He was serious and determined. He had his own struggles he was dealing with but really put himself out to assist women. Women who were hurt but forced to keep silent by a society who turned a blind eye to their suffering. Very sweet character. So happy for Leo to find her match.
For the naysayers, remember the story starts off with “London, October 1802 (or a variation thereof)”. I feel like that’s key in this book. Are some scenes a little bit more of how modern women behave than strictly of the time period? Yes. Are Drake’s ideas about women’s worth advanced beyond the male dominated POV of the time? Yes. But it all makes the story more fun to read and see these twists on what we think would happen and what the crafted outcome is. It’s an adventure of self discovery and seeing how even huge trials in life can help form stronger character.
4.5 stars, very enjoyable read Rating: PG, clean, does have triggers like discussion of a physical assault on a woman, however no unseemly details given.
England 1802: Lady Leonora, daughter to the Earl Of Whickerton, is inquisitive of the world in its entirety, particularly, human nature. Always observing those around her, Leonora finds herself utterly fascinated by what people say and do, by how their eyes reflect what is in their hearts and how each and every emotion can be read upon another’s face. It is a language unto itself, and Leonora is determined to record every little discovery in her trusted notebook, her constant companion…even when attending balls. Unfortunately, one night at a masquerade, Leonora’s curiosity leads her astray, forcing a lesson upon her that she cannot forget & which threatens to ruin her life. Drake Shaw, Marquis Of Pemberton, lives a life of regret and shame. Unable to right a wrong of his past, he seeks to punish those without honour. She is vulnerable and fearful, but also brave and…dauntless. This is the second Whickerton sibling to have her story & a lovely story it was. Drake is drawn to Leonora & quietly watches over her, he then happens to move into the house next door. Leonora slips into his house via a well used garden path & there he begins to gently teach her how to defend herself & take charge of her life again. A lovely slow burn romance, but it's also a time when the pair start to heal as well as fall in love. I was shouting for Leo when she firmly took charge & adored how she made her family proud. Of course Grandma Edie is prodding where needed all be it with her cane or her words. A very well written captivating read, roll on the rest of the series My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
A sweet romance evolves out of painful circumstances in this novel that encompasses PTSD, vigilanteism, facing one's fear's and exposing dark deeds. Lady Leonora has experienced an assault that no woman of any era should have to face, and it has left its mark on her. Drake, the Marquess of Pemberton, recognises the signs of trauma and he sets out to keep Leonora safe. I have mixed feelings about this novel, starting with the title which gives an impression of light-hearted fluff. It is not. The hero's darker nature is also questionable, even if his deeds are warranted. And, finally, the climax of the story left me with more questions than answers. The Whickerton family are in a class of their own, and Grandma Edie is a force to be reckoned with, bringing unexpected humour to the plot. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
Leonora is haunted by the incident which happened months ago but knows she must rejoin society. On first meeting Drake Pemberton her reaction to him is similar to any man outside of her family but something changes, he seems to understand her and quickly becomes someone she feels safe with. As time goes by he helps her feel stronger and regain her self-confidence. Can there be more between them? Loved the plot, the interaction between the family and the final denouement when Leonora stands up for herself even at great personal cost. I’m loving the Whickerton family, can’t wait until Christina’s story which follows next. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Hauntingly beautiful story, which drew me in from the very beginning. Drake has suffered grief in his personal life which allows him to recognize similar trauma in others. When he meets Lenora, he is sure she has been very hurt by someone and is determined to protect her. These wonderful characters build a friendship which allows Lenora to gain back some self confidence and the attraction which grows steadily between them is stirring to see. I loved this book and highly recommend it to Regency lovers everywhere. I received an ARC copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This is a deep and sensitive subject that was handled very well. The story was sweet and had many layers. I found it to be a bit wordy. It lays ground for another sisters story that is intriguing. Will I read it... Don't know yet.
5 stars I received a free copy of the historical Whickerton Grove romance Once Upon a Temptingly Ruinous Kiss: The Whickertons in Love book 2: Lenora and Drake by Bree Wolf and this review was given freely. The prologue is suspenseful, intense and attention grabbing. Running concurrent with her sister Louisa and Phineas Hawke the Viscount Barrington's story but starting roughly a year after the distaterous masquerade ball that leaves Lenora with social anxiety. There is a brief review regarding their trip to Lord Archibald’s yearly Christmas house party, Anne's match last year and speculations on the potential matches to occur this year but then continues with a shockingly bold offer from Great Brittan's version of Zorro, the silent vigilantly, the Duke of Pemberton. I enjoyed watching Drake struggle with his growing feelings and his sense of justice. Slightly scandalous for the times. Lady Lenora Whickerton secretly seeks out her new neighbor, Phineas' forthright and reclusive Eaton school friend, Drake Shaw the Marquess of Pemberton for security and to learn how to protect herself. The antics of Harry and Christina as well as the intuitive and interfering Grandma Edie's not so subtle match making skills are intertwined with Lenora's struggles with multiple suitors, her struggle to regain a sense of empowerment and her public advocacy of Women's Rites.
This author is known for her original, inventive and innovative storylines, and this book does not disappoint in that respect. The characters were interesting but I found them somewhat stereotypical. The dialogue was entertaining, lively and colourful.
I’ve read several books by this author and found them wonderfully entertaining. However this story seems to have a lot of holes … the main male character has duelled and killed many men yet is still part of society? My understanding was that duels were considered a criminal act, punishable by imprisonment. Which is why in most regency tales, the duellee had to leave the country immediately afterwards or face justice. Especially if one person was killed. I found that strange.
Also, the fact that our heroine’s parents were aware of her sneaking into the neighbour’s house (a SINGLE GENTLEMAN) unattended and allowed it? Doesn’t seem likely to me.
And did you notice that she always enters the house unseen, unheard by any servants? It’s as though the entire staff was deaf and blind!
I appreciated the fact there were no typos or glaring grammatical errors in this book. Also that it was clean, with no distasteful sex scenes.
I found that this story was “stretched out” a great deal. So much needless repetition… at one point I found it tedious. I realize both main characters were hesitant to engage in a relationship with each other but the shilly-shallying seemed forced, somehow, as though to extend the book.
To my mind, this book was not up to the level which I expected from this author. I was disappointed.
"Once Upon A Temptingly Ruinous Kiss" by the fabulous, fantastic Bree Wolf is another 6 out of 5 stars. It is the second book in the Whickerton in Love series. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own Lady Leonara Beaumont and Drake Shaw, Marquess of Pemberton share a certain something, that which disturbs them both, as well, as brings calm to them bu each other's sheer presence. This may be my new favorite book by Bree. She has taught me some self assurances and self defense just through her writing skills. An amazing book, an amazing story, an amazing author.
At the beginning I found the book too wordy, to many descriptions and not much happening. The way it starts with the dream, confused me a bit. I guess a bit too abstract to get right away into the story. But I kept on reading, because there were a couple of lines that made the book very interesting to me. The premise is quite unique, and having a MC that has been assaulted, and which must learn how to put herself back together, it was nice to read and and kept me reading.
Then I was very happy for keep reading the book. The story turned out to be awesome! I loved each character, and I had a hard time putting the book down. It is a slow burn, a very slow burn, and the lovey dovey scenes between the characters are very nice and heartwarming.
The characters have a very nice arc and the dialogues and many of the scenes were well written, with a lot of emotion. I really felt for both characters. I am interested in reading the rest of the books, this is the first fist one I read from this series. And maybe it would have helped me start with the first book, and it would have made a bit more sense, but since is a stand alone, I guessed it would be ok. I had some problems with the book too, and I think it could use a good editing, some details were confusing and the information not always added up.
When we get to the climax and we are revealed the identity of the bad guy, the author lost me again. For one, it was predictable (at least for me), and I understood that Leonora needed to put him in his place herself, but the way it was executed wasn't convincing for me. Having the father just calmly look at the aggressor, stopping the brother to not punch him, it was not believable. It was not a fatherly move. And maybe he didn't have to punch him in the face, but not even shake him? Drake just looking how the bad guy attempts to HIT her loved one, just agreeing with the father to let her do her thing? It was very out of character.
He might have evolved, and decided not to duel the guy, but just standing by? Not believable at all. And I am just saying this because the men in my life, brothers, husband, father and father in law, uncles... they wouldn't have just done nothing while the guy that has traumatized me calls me a harlot. They would have beat the crap out of him, in many different ways. And let me take a swing at him too. Because it's okay to need help. Leonora has had their help all along. It's okay to be weaker physically, but when you have people that love you in your life, you know that you will be fine. I would've loved to see her alone, punching the guy and yelling at him, and then everyone coming in the room. And hit him some more. (I know I might be violent, but he deserved it).
My other problem was that Leonora who has a loving family, that would do anything for her (except punch the bad guy in the face), gets to give a sermon about how bad women have it? I doubt that in the past fathers and brothers would just allow for their women to be assaulted and then letting them marry that guy. It was not Leonora's case, so for her to complain about the society's injustices, didn't seem right. She was literally the most privileged person in the room. Yes she was a victim of a bad man, but having so many good examples of good man around her, that sermon was not necessary.
The last thing that I didn't like was the way assault was described. At the beginning of the book, it gave me the impression that she was raped. Then I thought that Phineas had found her and separated her from the bad guy. Then it's mentioned that grandma sent Phineas to find Leonora and Louisa. Phineas seemed to know about the assault, but when Drake asked him about it, he said he didn't. We are told that it was actually Leonora how somehow kicked the guys butt and left. And then at the end of the book we know it was a kiss. And I know that if it's not with consent is assault, but if someone kisses you against your will, even if it's grose and you don't like it, such a big trauma that Leonora felt wasn't very believable then. So I guess some more details of what happened that night would've been nice to understand better her reaction. But even with all of the above complains it was a good read, and I would recommend it. The characters are interesting, and the story ended nicely.

More of the delightfully "Wicked Whickertons"! I can't help but love this series!
Book two of Bree Wolf's series, The Whickertons in Love, continue to explore the ups and downs of falling in love in Regency England, especially as it occurs in the loveable, quirky family of the Earl of Whickerton. From the brilliant imagination and creativity of Bree Wolf, the Whickertons become her spokespeople for their conviction that " ...the Whickertons always marry for love." By the magic of Ms. Wolf's superior wordcraft, I was consumed by the warmth and love of the Whickertons family's love and warmth. The focus is on Lenora, the Earl's second daughter, as she recovers from an attack that has severely broken her spirits. I especially appreciated the sensitivity and understanding that Ms. Wolf displayed as she transformed Lenora from a "cracked and wounded soul" into a strong, empowered woman. Through her developing interest in her dark and mysterious neighbor, Louisa comes to believe she is not a victim but a survivor. Drake has the power to fight her battles for her but chooses to teach and support Lenora as she fights for herself. Again, Bree Wolf masterfully describes Drake's personality so that as you read, you are drawn to his hidden shadows and inner dialogue. The story is darker and more suspenseful than book one. Yet you can still count on Bree to provide a happily ever after ending. There are more twists in this story before the villain is revealed. The surprise when the villain is caught fits with the captivating emotional feel of the novel. I found I had to keep reminding myself to breathe as the tension increased. Once Upon a Temptingly Ruinous Kiss has the Gothic thrill of the Brontes with the modern spirit of today's women.
Grandma Edie remains a spritely minx of a woman. She constantly keeps the reader and her family wondering what kind of mischief she is going to create next. Stay tuned to book three because SCANDLE seems to find the Whickertons wherever they go!
💋💋ONE EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURE💋💋 Blazing bloomers boo! A raging vortex brimming with riveting drama, gripping intrigue, underlying currents, heinous atrocities, electrifying suspense and intense situations ensue while attentive to the dramatic twists and wicked turns unfolding, secrets are shared, revelations are disclosed and vows are pledged, wrapping this jewel up sleek shiny and tight. Misfortune and mishaps run rampant as duplicity and stunning violation finds justice in a swirling tempest of determination and a brilliant right hook, broken boundaries and sketchy lines solidify as restrictions are breached and defied, exposing the soaring ups and agonizing downs, breathtaking in it's depth and inspiring in it's strength, launching this gem to life spectacularly. The attraction and chemistry collides with such finesse and ardor, exploding with boundless emotions and infinite affections, uniting them together beautifully. The characters dialogue, interactions and charged atmosphere along with relatable qualities and individual traits, balancing fluidly, adding depth and diversity, transforming into outstanding personalities. The scenes are abundantly descriptive with colorful details that blend and flow, creating a majestic backdrop that's so rich and lively it feels as though you're part of the story instead of on the sidelines, feeling everything the characters feel. Fabulous job Bree, thanks for sharing this awesome little gem with us.
Nice, though a little slow moving at times sweet Regency. Leonora is suffering trauma after being attacked at a masquerade ball where an unknown man grabbed her, shoved her against a wall and kissed her against her will. In the months following the incident Leonora is plagued by nightmares and a new terror of social situations. She meets Drake at a Christmas party, he is a marquess who killed his father in a duel after learning of the abuse his mother had suffered leading to her suicide. He has dispatched a few other abusive men as well. Drake senses Leonora’s trauma and tells her he would kill whoever hurt her if she identified him. Leonora starts sneaking away to meet Drake for self defense lessons which helps her confidence. Eventually she learns who attacked her and exposes him publicly at a ball. Both she and Drake are unsure if the feelings they’ve developed are reciprocated or the product of protection and gratitude, until Leonora’s wise grandma clues them in. I did really like Leonora battling back against her trauma and confronting her attacker. Some of the prose felt a little slow moving and repetitive and I wish some of those words had been spent developing Drake a little more as a character, he didn’t seem to have any life outside of waiting around to give Leonora lessons or watch over her at social events. He’s supposed to be a marquess, but came across as a bit of a cypher. The story also implies he’s actually murdered several dudes in duels, and is pretty nonchalant about that! Overall a nice story.
Quiet and observant is how Leonora Beaumont is described by those who know her. She is curious about everything. When she attended a masquerade, just to observe, she is assaulted in a dark corridor by a man wearing a mask. Since then, she has been wracked with nightmares, and her self-confidence is shattered. Drake Shaw, Marquess of Pemberton, was traumatized by his mother’s suicide (likely to escape his father’s abuse), and recognizes Leo’s pain for what it is. She feels less afraid around him, and agrees to let him help her. Drake is wonderful. He encourages her and teaches her how to defend herself. Along the way, they become friends, and maybe more?
This story is full of drama and emotion. Drake and Leonora need each other and belong together. Their romance is gradual. Both are uncertain, but the connection is strong. I love the Whickertons. The Earl and the Countess head a close-knit, supportive, and happy family, uncommon in Society. The Beaumont sisters are wonderful and a little wacky, and Grandmama Edie is feisty and delightful. When they all finally find out what happened to Leo, they form a solid wall of protection around her. When the time comes to confront the villain, guess who takes care of it. An engaging story with compelling characters. A great read. I recommend this story and the series.
I thoroughly enjoyed Once Upon a Temptingly Ruinous Kiss by Bree Wolf! We are reacquainted with Lady Leonora, who was previously attacked at a masquerade ball. She's kept the attack a secret, only telling her sister and brother-in-law who were with her at the time. And, of course, Grandma Edie has guessed, because her intuition is never wrong. Leonora hasn't been able to overcome the nightmares, fear, and isolation that the attack has caused her. Integrating herself back into society is nearly impossible until she meets her brother-in-law's school friend, Drake Shaw, Marquess of Pemberton, also a recluse with secrets of his own. For some reason, Leonora is surprisingly comfortable with the Marquess of Pemberton, taking him into her confidence, and eventually asking that he train her in self-defense. They secretly meet for such training. Meanwhile, their time together brings a deeper friendship where secrets are traded, and even a kiss or two! A wonderful tale is woven, with intrigue, mystery of who the masked attacker is, intermingled with the antics of Leonora's 2 younger sisters as well as Grandma Edie. A true delight! I received a complimentary ARC of this book and have freely given my honest opinion in this review.
Once Upon a Temptingly Ruinous Kiss by Bree Wolf is book 2 in the Wickertons in Love series. This book can be read on its own, but I recommend reading the previous book. I think it adds to this story. I received an advance copy and have voluntarily reviewed. This was my stay up till 4am to read in one sitting book. I could not put this one down.
I just loved this story from the start. It was beautifully written and tells the story of broken souls trying to heal. Lady Leonora Wickerton is attacked at a Masquerade. She retreats into herself but knows she must go back out in society and agrees to attend a house party.
Drake Shaw, Marquess of Pemberton is a self proclaimed defender of the downtrodden. He was invited to the same house party and is left alone with Lady Leonora. He can tell she has been hurt just by the way she looks, her stance, the way she carries herself. He says something to her that makes a huge impact on her. You will have to read the story to find out what he says.
Along the way to HEA, this journey has emotional healing, learning to trust, maybe a dual or two, learning to defend yourself, and when given the opportunity, a very supportive family.
Lady Leonora’s curiosity for human nature leads her into a dark corridor at a masquerade party and she is attacked by a masked assailant making her vulnerable and afraid. The vibrant curious woman she once was is no more.
Drake Shaw, the Marquess of Pemberton, cannot erase out of his mind, the memory of his mother lying in a pool of blood. He blames himself for her death and vows to avenge women who have been mistreated by the men in their lives. He becomes very good at reading people and when he meets Leonora at a house party he sees the fear and anxiety in her face. He helps her to overcome her fears and teaches her how to protect her from unwanted advances.
Leonora comes to trust Drake and even starts to feel comfortable in his presence. She is grateful for his protection and begins to feel her confidence returning. She finds that her desire for a husband and children could again be possible in her future, but there is only one face that comes to mind when considering marriage. Does he feel the same way? A page turner, this story was exiting, adventurous and romantic. A must read if you enjoy gallant heroes and and brave heroines.
I was enraptured from the first haunting paragraph, and now I've completed Leonora's story I'm utterly amazed at her realistic transformation.
I LOVED this novel. Amid the darkness and pain lay a fearless hope and light, and I enjoyed seeing how a seemingly hopeless situation draw two individuals together. Leonora held her cards close to protect her loved ones (a "fault" I admit claiming as my own so I empathised with her), as did Drake, although he had no loved ones. His quiet, almost broody personality, yet sharp instinct and consideration of Leonora captured me from the first mention of him in Louisa's book. The perfect mix of stoicism and gentlemanly traits, Drake was perfect in his many inperfections.
Since I dislike giving spoilers, all I will say is: A) I'm thrilled my dislike of a character from an earlier book was warranted. When some truths were brought to light later in the novel, I wanted to clap and slap one particular character. B) I'M SO EXCITED FOR THE NEXT BOOK! Oh my goodness, talk about leaving a girl hanging with that epilogue. 🙈😜
The following are my thoughts as I read this book. Lenora Beaumont…daughter of the Earl of Whickerton, has four sisters, nicknamed Leo. Drake Shaw…Marquess of Pemberton, fights duels, has a secret burden. The h was secretly attacked and now is afraid of life. The H seems to understand the h’s predicament. Awww the H is helping the h to overcome her fears. The h’s younger sister is a snob. Oh dear some miscommunication is about to happen. Ok Chris might be a snob but she has good sisterly advice. Why stop communicating freely and openly now? LOL. Yes ask or tell him! Oooh the villain has made contact with the h. Ask or tell her man! I’m going to make a mental prediction of who the villain is right now, let’s see if I am right. Ok more family are learning about the h’s secret. Oh my goodness now they are both being obtuse. I was right a bout the villain! Wow the h was fantastic! There she go overthinking. Yes the H is smooth and the h cannot resist him. This was book two of The Whickerton in Love series and I really enjoyed reading it. Once again the author took a sensitive topic and beautifully handled it in the story. Bravo!
Lenora was once a vibrant curious young woman before attendance at a masquerade! She was accosted and made to feel violated by a horrible nasty kiss by an unknown assailant! I understand this can make you very nervous and uncomfortable but Lenora Aka Leo fear was almost tangible!!! Drake can spot fear especially women who are fearful from a distance! He has secretly carried out vengeance on victims behalf through duels! We don’t learn why until later! Drake was introduced in an earlier story and this story slowly unfolds! Drake becomes Lenora neighbor and she is drawn to him as he makes her feel safe! He teaches her the art of self defense and the two grow close? There is too much uncertainty in their relationship with the amount of time spent? Their interactions are so frequent I don’t get the drama of their agonizing over emotions! The end is unexpected the villain is certainly a surprise as well as how Lenora finally stands up for herself!
This is the 2nd book in the series The Whickertons in Love, and I enjoyed it so much. It is a stand-alone book, but the main character Leonora is mentioned in the previous book. This book is about Drake, a Marquess and Lady Leonora. Leonora has been hurt in the past by an unknown man, and now is afraid of every man she meets. Drake has been known to recognize ladies who have been hurt, even when they try to hide it, and he makes the men that hurt them pay. When Drake meets Leonora, he knows she has been hurt and wants her to feel safe. Drake is the perfect man for Leonora, he is patient with her, and helps her anyway he can, he is strong, he is protective, but he also knows what she needs which is to realize she is strong. I have to say I love Leonora’s family and they way they try to protect her also. This is a clean read and I would recommend this book to everyone. I received an ARC of this book for my honest opinion.
