In this book Tenkei Roshi provides guidelines for Zen Buddhist practice based on the “Four Modes of Meditation” that he developed over recent years at Zen River Temple in The Netherlands. He also addresses how these modes can be extended to koan training, ritual, study, work, and social interaction. Timeless Calling, Timely Response aims to serve as an inspiration for anyone interested in hearing their life’s calling and finding their own way to respond to it.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As a lay Zen practitioner, I found that struck a refreshing balance between practical information for those newer to Zen and provoking insights for those more seasoned in the Sangha. I’ve been studying this book through a weekly class in my local sangha this year and it has provided a helpful framework and deep well of content for discussion. I loved it so much I had to read ahead and finish the book.
