Lost Girls is a set of two side stories that take place during two crucial moments during the first major story arc of the main series. It doesn't go too far in the overall story, but it will spoil two big reveals for people that haven't read or watched the series at all yet.

The first story revolves around Annie Leonhart, who (spoiler: is the female titan that killed many of Eren's comrades and tried to capture him) and is grieving because of her failure to fulfill the duty given to her by her father to bring Eren back to her hometown alive. It takes place right before her assault on the city of Trost when she's hiding out in the military police lounge after her first attempt to capture Eren ended in failure. We get to see her mental and emotional state in a new light. She was treated as nothing more than a tool for war her entire life and she has a great deal of trauma weighing down on her. With a guilty conscience and a heavy heart, Annie decides to play the role of an obedient soldier for the sake of easing herself from the guilt of killing hundreds of innocent people and knowing she will soon have to kill many more in her next attempt to capture Eren. She takes on odd jobs around the city such as stopping an illegal drug trafficking gang, finding a lost girl, solving a murder mystery and minor favors for her acquaintances in the military police.

It's a rather laid back side story, but it really drives home the fact that Annie is the victim of a vicious war built on years of prejudice and she's dealing with a major identity crisis. It's a reminder that there are no heroes in Attack on Titan. Everyone is a victim of circumstance and the oppressed can become the oppressors at any moment. It humanizes a character that has done some very controversial things and definitely made me care about her and her personal struggles a lot more.

The second story revolves around Mikasa and takes place much earlier in the story after (spoiler: Eren is eaten by a titan and Mikasa almost gets herself killed after pushing her odm gear beyond its limits during a fit of grief and falls unconscious after hitting her head on concrete) and it's told through a dream sequence. The dream sequence cleverly combines Mikasa's real memories with a new what-if scenario that explores what could've happened if Dr. Yeager arrived to her home in time before a group of sex slave traffickers broke into her house and killed her father and pregnant mother. In this scenario, we see her and Eren more like siblings, her baby brother that never had the chance to be born and we also got to explore the bloomings of Eren's early philosophy that would end up turning him into what he is in the final arc. It makes you rethink Mikasa's feelings toward Eren and it also reveals that the signs of who Eren would later become were already right in front of us, we just didn't know it yet.

I'm glad I waited so long to read this because even though this takes place fairly early in the main story, there's a lot of foreshadowing and clues sprinkled throughout it that you would only pick up on if you've read into the final arc of the main series. A lot of shocking, terrible and depressing things happen to Eren, Mikasa and Annie during the final arc of the main series and there's good use of tragic foreshadowing in both side stories that are much more impactful to me now then if I had read this a few years ago. As I said in my review of the main series, Attack on Titan has some incredible levels of re-readability.

What an excellent character study of Annie Leonhart.

As far as side stories go, this one was absolutely delightful. Funny, insightful, entertaining, and engaging in all the right ways to make you feel closer to Annie's character.

The way that the story utilized every component of it smartly enough to flesh out her character without making it overly obvious or overbearing, subtle and yet poignant, makes this complementary material quite the worthy read; and so easy and enjoyable that it will never feel like a lose.

Plus, the art was just perfect for setting the ambiance and giving some levity with its versatile style, going from adorable to very grungy and serious without a flaw.

I could have read much more with this art style.

As an Annie fan, this was the perfect little story to get to understand her character a little bit more.

a day in the life of Annie before that eventful day. During the time of these events, we were focused on Eren in the original manga, so in this volume the author and artist imagine what that was like for Annie with the MPs and the inner conflicts she was having.

It was interesting reading this AFTER finishing AOT and learning the entire story of Annie.

I (unexpectedly) liked this story so much! We see Annie dabbling in solving a mystery within the walls, a mystery that I was afraid would bore me, instead it was very entertaining. In my opinion, in this volume we get to see the true essence of Annie, which in the main story goes a bit overlooked, as the focus is on the main plot. i really enjoyed it.

This was such a great story, it details the day before Annie carried out her grand plan and details what she did and she was solving the kidnapping of carly stratmann on a request from her father and then the way the case goes from her dealing drugs, feeding criminals, her father being the mastermind and some private henchmen and her bf wayne peddling her father just wow, such an epic detective like story with Annie in the center and she has great moments too like fighting others or almost turning to a titan or helping carly escape and whatnot, and her deduction skills just wow. And the art is just impeccable, Annie is best girl easily.

this little spin-off story was really fun and i thoroughly enjoyed the mystery BUT the artists for this manga weren’t isayama, which means that at some points the drawings were very goofy. specifically, isayama doesn’t draw his characters as caricatures, but these artists did which just kind of took me out of the story a little because it’s not the kind of thing i’m used to seeing in an AOT manga

Excellent! This is a tie-in series with "Attack on Titan" which goes back and features a story about one of the girls. This volume is Annie Leonhart's story. It is the day before she goes on her mission to capture Eren. She's too worked up to relax so she goes to work looking for a rich man's missing daughter. She gets caught up in the underworld of drugs and alcohol and finds herself in danger. A very well plotted story and loads of fun getting to know Annie better. Looking forward to vol. 2 which will be about Mikasa.

Translation-wise, I have some complaints. The English translation version of this manga that I've read called Wall Sina as Wall Sheena. I was like "who the hell is Sheena?"

Art-wise, it's nice. :)

This manga gave me a glimpse of the life of Annie inside the inner wall. I'm well aware that they have shown that in the last couple of episodes in the anime but I wanted more of that and this manga granted me that. Overall, it kept me entertained for a couple of minutes (it's a short read, as all manga should be).

Easily one of my favorite mangas, because it follows my favorite character in the whole show/manga. The OVA animation for this was great too, I loved it. Annie has always been one of my favorite characters, solely because of her will to fight and her pure strength that matches that of a lion, making her last name; ‘Leonhardt’ (Pronounced Ley-un-heartt, meaning Lion’s heart) much more fitting.

feeding off of spin-offs because i don't want to have to finish the main series just yet and be left with nothing but an empty void, impatiently waiting for the final volume.

i do wish the spin-off was longer and provided more of a backstory but alas, it is nothing but my heart's selfish request. we got a cute story of annie playing detective, so i still consider this a win.

Un spin-off bastante guapo. El guion es bueno, el dibujo resulta menos artificial que No Regrets y se explora un poco más a Annie, que ya le venía haciendo falta. Todo fluye correctamente y cada escena añade algo al conjunto sin parecer forzado, así que, aunque no deje de ser la típica historia de misterio, los toques sucios ayudan a vender la estética del manga de Isayama. Es menos cruel, sin duda, pero se mete dentro de la corrupción social que el autor original ya comenzaba a perfilar. No pasa de ser un añadido interesante que ni contradice ni aporta nada al canon de la historia principal, tampoco voy a negarlo. Es solo que, sea o no intrascendente, trata correctamente a sus personajes y cumple en todos los aspectos para merecerse la etiqueta de "bueno". Gracias, Goodreads, por no dejarme poner tres estrellas y media. Cómo os quiero.

Attack on Titan: Lost Girls, Volume 1, by Hajime Isayama, Hiroshi Seko, Ryosuke Fuji, 192 pages.

I was stuck at the dentist, getting car maintenance, and the doctor today, no kids. I had lots of books to pick from, but I picked one with the soonest library due date, a manga called Attack on Titan: Lost Girls, volume 1, and I'm glad I did. It was a great diversion. I really liked this one a lot. I've watched 2 seasons of anime with my kids for this manga series. I wouldn't recommend it for younger kids. It can be a bit violent. However, the characters are endearing, and I like all the hidden meanings in this series. Of course I wanted to find out more. As a family, we checked out the entire series pulling from something like 6 or 7 different libraries. The one I read today was a side story detailing one day in the life of a character, the day before something very pivotal involving her occurs. This is not a story that could have been told within the time line because it spoils a reveal, so I'm glad I'm coming across it after being aware of the plot as it stood. The story follows the character for a day, and becomes sort of a whodunit-type mystery, mostly unrelated to the main storyline. It was very entertaining, and it made a sort of unlikable character much more likable and human to me. (If any of you are familiar with this plot, you'll realize the pun I made. Most likely you won't.)

Not to overly defend manga (it doesn't take the place of regular books and all), but I like to read what my kids are into, and the more I've read manga and graphic novels, the more I've enjoyed the genre. There is something about the blend of words and art that really tell a story.

This was good but not great. I thought we were getting an entire series about Annie--that we would get back story on why she does what she does. Maybe a different perspective of the events that occur in the main story line. But we didn't. Instead, we have a random side-mission she takes to distract herself from the main events.

While it wasn't bad, it wasn't what I was expecting. Sure, it was still interesting--exciting even. Annie kicks butt multiple times. This manga shows another side of her--a side we don't see in the main story line of Attack on Titan. We also get a glimpse of her childhood, which was different, maybe even a tad sad. But this didn't fulfill my want of knowing more about her and her life.

I think if you like Attack on Titan, you should definitely read this and any of the volumes that follow. Lost Girls seems to be an interesting thread of volumes about the various female characters from the series. And while I love the concept and am eager to read about others, I wanted more about this Lost Girl. Maybe they'll come back to her later.

This story is about one of the antagonists(?) in attack on titan. It is about the little mess she gets herself into the day before she goes on her mission. Most of the time, not much is needed to be done in the military police, but Annie is assigned the job of finding Carly Stratmann, the daughter of a rich man in the city. When she asks the girl's father some questions, Annie knows that something is off and that he is hiding something. She keeps on investigating this case, but finds herself in the bad side of town looking for Carly. Soon, Annie also finds herself in danger. I really liked this book because it was a mystery book compared to the rest of the attack on titan books, which are all adventure.
