The first stories Isabelle Merlin remembers are the traditional French fairytales told to her by her French grandmother. Later, she heard family stories, which proved to her that magic and romance and terror don't only appear in fairytales: like the romantic story of the beautiful ancestor who caught the eye of the Sun-King, Louis XIV; or the amazing story of the wily ancestor who went from being a poor peasant to a multi-millionaire; or the tragic story of the curse of madness and misfortune that pursued other ancestors; or the spooky story of the chain-rattling ghost that haunted the family home deep in the green countryside of France. It's no wonder that she grew up with a head full of stories and a burning desire to become a writer. Isabelle lives in Australia with her family.
As a grandmother, I loved this exciting book. I can imagine how much more my teenage granddaughters will love it. It's soooooo romantic and soooooo dangerous and soooooo modern. Isabelle Merlin is a terrific writer and if her heroine, Rose, writes as well as Isabelle, she WILL become a best selling author one day. :) I highly recommend Three Wishes and suggest that you have nothing else to do when you open this book, because you won't be able to put it down.
It follows a girl named Rose who made a blog for her English assignment and in her first post, she wrote about her three wishes which includes being a best-seller writer, win a lottery, and have a beautiful silver glass slipper. Unexpected, the next day, she received a news that said she is a long lost granddaughter of a super-rich businessman in France. She went to France because her grandfather wanted to meet her for the first time. At France, she lived at her grandfather's mansion and thought that she had got her own happy ending-fairytale. What she didn't know was someone wasn't happy to have her there, and tried to kill her.
Don't get fooled by the cover because the story itself isn't as cute as the cover🤯
If you see the cover, you might guess that this book is just a light contemporary romance or modern fairytale retelling.
Your guess is right! But this book also has mystery in it which thrilled me enough to read it until the end!
The beginning of the book was really slow and boring for me, but once the mystery started, it became interesting! It's the type of 'who-dun-it' mystery, my favorite!
Even thought this is a mild mystery, there are some scenes that made my heart beat faster! So thrilling! But i'm so happy that my guess for the plot twist was right!
There are some things that disappoint me. First, the romance. It has love triangle which is one of my favorite trope. But in this book, i found it to be really cheesy (both of the males) and made me rolled my eyes a lot. Also i didn't like how the author equalized a pervert guy with a mysterious-cold hearted guy. (In other words, for the author --> pervert= mysterious-cold hearted)
And the worse is, she romanticized it, thinking it would be a cute love story. Ew🤮.
I also didn't feel really attached to any of the characters in this book, even Rose, sometimes she can be so childish. (Sometimes it felt like i read a thought of 12 years old, not 16 years old).
The execution was also not satisfying enough. It felt too easy🤔
So, long story short, the only thing that i love from this book is the mystery. It's also the only reason why i finished this book😂.
Well, despite its flaws, i recommend this book if you like romance-mystery with a little fairytale story!
I was happy to FINALLY read a book by an Australian author. I mean, apart from John Marsden, who is there, really?
OK, I'm not a fan of romances, not by any stretch of the imagination. This one wasn't too bad, though. I mean, the setting was nice and I enjoyed the fact that Rose is actually a 3D heroine who isn't 'special' or 'marked' (eg: she isn't dubbed as 'The Chosen One') even though she is an orphan, of course.
Loved the whole French thing, and it was awesome having a combination of romance and mystery.
But, oh hell, a love triangle. Please someone, show me a romance that ISN'T a love triangle. Please. Just one. This was actually a reasonably good triangle - even though the whole Charlie thing was kinda... blunt. I mean, who kisses someone an hour after meeting them? ... Seriously?
And who accepts it as normal? So yeaaaaaah... Paul all the way XD
And I loved that chapter where you didn't know who the villain was. I was reading through it, wondering who it was.
ONE MORE RANT - JUST ONE: I HATED THE STUPID BLOG. SOOOOOOOOO TRY-HARD. I MEAN, IT'S PRETTY DANG OBVIOUS THAT ROSE ISN'T REAL, NOR IS KOSCHEI OR PORTIA/MADDY/ALICE/OTHER FRIEND WITH NO PERSONALITY. SO PLEASE. I JUST WANT TO SIT DOWN AND READ THE BLOODY BOOK, NOT LOG ONTO MY COMPUTER EVERY TEN PAGES AND GO ONTO THE GOSH DARN BLOG.
So yeah. Not too bad, I would recommend it to those who can't cope with 'big books' or 'complicated books'. It takes practically no brain cells to read it. Not my all-time favourite but not a waste of time either.
I loved the plot of the story, but I did not like the writing style. I felt like the language of the book did not flow and I found a few typos in the text. The ending seemed rushed and it wasn't until the end that I realized Rose was recounting the story through writing in her journal. Overall, the idea for the book was amazing. The author and her writing style not so much.
Loved it! The only disappointment I experienced was that the beginning was very slow, but when she went to France, the story became so compelling and lovable! :D
My rating: 1/5 stars From the very moment I read the blurb I knew I was going to be disappointed. I mean, any book with ‘Rose becomes enchanted with her new life, and particularly with Charlie, a charming boy who is equally besotted with Rose’ on the blurb was bound to be cliché, cringe-worthy and way too predictable, but in an act of stupidity I chose to read it anyway. Merlin’s writing was unoriginal and multiple times throughout the novel I found myself rephrasing her words (and I can’t write to save my life!) as an attempt to make the story slightly more enjoyable for myself, although it didn’t work. This unfortunately led to me guessing the whole plot and being correct the whole time, which I must say was a real spoilsport for me. I could kind of see where Merlin was going with the whole ‘three wishes’ and ‘careful what you wish for’ theme throughout the book, but honestly, it just didn’t work out for her. Instead it left the novel hanging (in a bad way) in the midst of everyday reality and fantasy, which ruined the whole book’s flow. I must end with that I was looking forward to reading this novel, regrettably however Merlin just failed to deliver. Shreema
The suspense and the plot twist in this book really got to me, despite having read it before. It had been a while, so I didn't quite remember... I questioned who it was dozens of times. I really enjoyed the French aspects in the setting and lifestyle once Rose visits her grandfather. The relationships with her family and the household staff felt very genuine. Some of the history was interesting to learn about as well. (SPOILER) I wish that Louis didn't die. I imagine that is the sentiment that Merlin wanted to elicit by killing him off, but it still bugs me that he didn't do anything wrong and now he's gone. I also think they kind of did Blanche a little dirty... like, I know that she wasn't perfect and she was almost possibly the bad guy at a couple of times, but I don't think that she left for the right reasons? Still an amazing book.
Membuat saya agak bosan. Sejak awal ketebak siapa pelakunya meski penulis berusaha memelintir dan menyembunyikan rapat-rapat sebelum menuju ending. Typo-nya lumayan mengganggu. Tiga bintang.
I hate to DNF, but when I am not enjoying a book I drag it out and dread reading. Not this year. New year, new me.
This book started out slow and 40% in, it has gotten slower and has gotten so strange. There’s curses and feuds and omens...
I didn’t realize this before I started the book but the main character is 16-17 years old. She rambles on quite a bit - much as you would expect an immature person to do - and tends to dwell on things. It has taken too long to get to the point of this story and I’m calling it quits and moving on.
probably the only love triangle trope ive ever actually enjoyed. Also the first book that made me realize love interests could be POC? Wow. And THAT ENDING *chef's kiss*.
So this is a re-read and good god is this classified as "guilty pleasure" for a reason.
It's not fantastically written and tends to go down the easy route of Mary Sue orphan finds herself in a somewhat interesting mystery tainted with a love triangle with not much build up with the romance whatsoever so it feels quite forced and unnatural. French men aren't that forward, are they?
The climax is kind of a let down because the writer (Isabelle Merlin) tends to tell and not show. I suppose the way it's written is from a seventeen year old perspective who is reliving a traumatising event in her life, but it reads like almost everyone loves her and she's "adorably awkward" and people just can't help themselves around her and if they don't like her it's because those people are stuck up or have glaringly obvious negative character traits.
And also - you were nearly murdered. Why are you having jovial conversations with the good samaritan who saved you and he just has to mention you're pretty? Unnecessary for a good story. And again, more telling, no showing. I think the only reason I keep this book is because there is a good story here, it's just very well conveyed.
P.S. Too many friends equals very little characterisation.

I loved this story. I read this a few years ago, because I hadn't read anything in a long time and I needed to get back into reading, and this book reminded me of why I loved reading books in the first place. This book was exciting to read and the characters just kept getting more interesting the more I read on. The mystery in this was great and I didn't guess any of the twists, I have read three other Isabelle Merlin books and I haven't guessed the twists in those either! It's just a lovely book and I am so glad I own it so I can turn to it whenever I need a good book to read.
Well, agak ketebak tapi suka ceritanya cuma bagian terjemahannya kadang kurang populer dan kadang agak kebalikbalik. Tapi sejak awal udah suka sama paul fountaine, dan curiga sama si charlie. Ngeri banget kl ada orang macem charlie. Sedih waktu kakek sama sopirnya kecelakaan nice work, cuma kadant bingung sama perasaan si rose.
Fairytalenya kerasa bingo.
really cute novel, an easy read for year 7-8, innocent faux mystery fairy story set in France with links to a blog, which while a clever idea has not been updated recently. It has some great lines such as what she thinks of a teacher: 'I used to think that teachers stayed at school all night, sort of sat on shelves or something wit the lights off till morning. Like frogs in a drought, waiting underground for rain to make them croak again.' :)
This was Isabelle Merlin's first novel. Beware: read it - and you'll be left praying for more. If you love a bit of mystery with heaps of romance thrown in for good measure, this is the book for you. I'm hanging out for number four, so hurry up Ms. Merlin!
It was a good book, not awesome, but nice. It just that i was expecting something like Victoria Holt but in modern time. It did have mystery and romance and its located in a castle, just like most of gothic books, but something was missing. I just wasnt into the character of Rose.
At first I thought the book was gonna be a sort of girly book because of the cover. But it turned out to be a murder mystery for teens kinda book. And I liked it. That's why they say "Don't judge the book by its cover"
