Starkiller: The Merry Maids Book Three

Rate this book
Alyvia Tippin is not a fan of big changes, and yet that's all her life has been since leaving the Academy. Now that she's discovered more about her abilities, the Council seems determined to add even bigger changes to her life. Despite The Merry Maids' protests, the Council wants Alyvia to train with the Shadows, to figure out how her Amplifier skills could be useful to their team. At least she can stop worrying about her best friend now that she knows he is one of the Shadows. As The Merry Maids' quest to find the Starkiller pieces nears completion, their course is set to collide again with Maks, and all of the horrors Lyv thought she left behind when she escaped Cayberra. Change is inevitable. Alyvia just hopes her team can survive. +++The Merry Maids is an action story set in space, and features a FMC who just wants to dance among the stars. This is the final book in the trilogy and ready for your review!

Incredible sci fi adventure

The worldbuilding is phenomenal. The story is riveting; I stupidly started Starkiller before I went to sleep and had to force myself to close my Kindle and actually go to sleep at 6am. I laughed out loud and cried, because the "good" characters are wonderful, and warm, and dangerous, and funny. The touch of romance is perfect and only adds to the plot's intensity. Contrary to the series name, The Merry Maids has some dark themes and deals realistically with trauma and abuse. Characters die, unfortunately not only the ones who deserve to die, and no one gets to kick Master Omin in the crotch, much to my disappointment. The ending finds everyone safe but is somewhat open as far as some plot points are concerned. I truly hope Ms. Contreras gives us more adventures of this found family. I read the book in KU and immediately bought it to reread, because the Merry Maids feel like friends I'll want to visit often.

A beautiful end to the circle

Sometimes family is who you are born into, and sometimes it’s who you choose. It beautiful to watch Alvyia find both.

Trigger Warnings
This book contains:
• Physical and psychological torture
• Kidnapping
• Attempted and actual murder
• Corruption
Characters
Alyvia and the Merry Maids have teamed up with the Shadows to hunt down the final Starkiller pieces and finally resolve the matter. With the addition of new team members and a new ship, it changes a lot of dynamics for everyone.
Storyline
The Shadows join the Merry Maids on their mission to collect all remaining Starkiller pieces. To make sure they’re ready for anything, lots of training sessions together begin which exposes new talents and new members while also needing to move into a new ship to live and travel together.
As they progress on their mission, more and more allegiances are questioned with corruption filtering through everything they do right up until the final moments.
Overall Thoughts
The feeling of the story not being quite as good intensified in this book enough to drop it down in my ratings. And mostly this came down to the amount of information and detail is included given how much is going on.
In the first book, Merry Maids, there’s a lot of detail, a lot of attention paid to building the small things into the bigger picture. But as we progressed it slowly tapered off to the point where in this book it feels like it detrimentally impacted the book.
Instead of skimping on those details and interactions, I wish the book was a little longer to ensure we get the full experience throughout all the books in the series. With the hint of setting up another series, I really hope Stephanie gives her characters and stories all the time they deserve to properly flesh them out and give them the full experience.

A fitting conclusion to the Merry Maids series. I enjoyed riding along with Alyvia and her team for the entire series, and the last half of this book was especially action packed. Ms. Contreras had an exuberant writing style that makes it easy to slip into the head of her main character. Even when dealing with dark and heavy content, you want to root for Alyvia as she overcomes her demons and finally finds the family she deserves. I’m definitely looking forward to more from the author.
