Yoga Bones: A Comprehensive Guide to Managing Pain and Orthopedic Injuries Through Yoga by Laura Staton is the perfect book for those suffering from orthopedic pain. As with my review for The Yoga Effect, this book is a tool and not a cure. It can help manage pain. It is also for anyone at any level of yoga. It is broken up into sections: the spine, the lower back, the upper back, the shoulders, the pelvis and knees, and the extremities. Each section goes into bones and muscle but also nerve endings and how which poses can help.
This book is amazing. I have been practicing yoga for roughly 8 years and I know the benefits of yoga. The portion of the book that helped me the most is the section on the shoulders. I have torn both rotator cuffs and while it has been a while since I have had a considerable amount of pain in my shoulder, my shoulders do act up during certain exercises. Now, I have added the 8 positions to my warm-up to help strengthen my shoulders.
Each section also provides images and also sequences on how to perform each pose for the best benefit. I cannot recommend this book enough! If you need a little extra care in a certain area of the body, definitely check out this book. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
A very well written book. Obviously, if you have previous yoga experience, the poses will be easier to do; however, most of the poses are basic enough even for a beginner. Directions talking you through the poses are well written and explain how to do the pose very well. There are usually multiple photographs of each along with the instructions. I very much like the fact that the author shows people of different ages, sizes and genders doing the poses throughout the book. The book is divided into sections targeting certain problems and/or conditions. Some of the poses show variations to make the pose less challenging if necessary. Unfortunately, many of the poses require getting onto the floor. But there are enough other poses to make up for it if you are unable to lower yourself to the floor. There are also poses that may help prevent problems from happening in the first place. If the practice of yoga is something that interests you, this book may be a valuable addition to your collection. If these poses cannot solve the problem, the stretching that they provide will be helpful in itself.
This is one of the good ones - not just a standard cruise through the common yoga poses, this is a useful books for anyone who teaches yoga or has chronic pain/injuries. It would be most useful for yoga teachers of seniors or other groups at risk for mobility-limiting issues.
There are poses and modifications I've not seen anywhere else, which is hard to accomplish for someone who has read as many yoga books as I have. The introductions are thorough and readable, explaining how each section of the body functions, is typically injured, and can be healed.
I got some new approaches - like connecting the lower back firmly during floor leg work, and cues like pull glutes toward heels when prone. I would read it again to reinforce what I learned, good book.
checked out from library. this is a great compendium of modified yoga poses to address certain physical conditions like hip and knee replacement. It is focused on each major joint area to included spine, shoulder, hips, knees, feet, hands...good summaries of breathing techniques. Would like to have this as a reference and not just a library book.
Yoga Bones: A Comprehensive Guide to Managing Pain and Orthopedic Injuries Through Yoga by Laura Staton is a practical reference book that readers can do. The information is accessible and presented with care and clarity. Readers will find the information useful and a great enhancement to their confidence in moving forward with their Yoga practice.
Gives an in-depth orthopaedic review of various problems and related yoga poses. The scientific knowledge was too much for my understanding. But the poses with properties are very helpful.
If you have back issues, this book has helpful information. I just wish it was accompanied by a video taking you through the yoga moves. Looking at a picture in a book isn’t as effective for me.
Great, practical and easy to use book, for both the seasoned practitioner seeking specifc and comprehensive tools and self-agency to certain injuries and pain, as well as people completely new to Yoga wanting a more mindful approach to managing pain and injury.
