Modernists dug deep, starting from the surface. Postmodernists smoothed the depth by means of the surface. Metamodernists apply depth to the surface.
I don't like postmodernism. I am disgusted by his cold cynicism, evil irony, fruitless snobbery and endless quotability, which seems to have abolished the very concept of plagiarism. A few years ago, when formulating my attitude, I said that postmodernism, with its half-century history, is young in a general cultural context. A baby that has not yet proved its viability and, quite possibly, will sink into oblivion before it has time to do so. It will remain in the annals of history as a short period of feuilleton culture from the "The Glass Bead Game".
But the opposite may also happen, it will become the basis for a new culture, the features and features of which no one can predict today. No one ever knows anything for sure, and what seems to be a parasitic, in fact, formation is probably a root that knows how to take juices not from the ground, but from the air or directly from sunlight. And so, when I was thinking all this to myself, "Metamodernism" had already been written.
Professor of the Department of Philosophy at Erasmus University in the Netherlands, Robin van der Acker has been seriously researching the current situation and trends in the development of modern aesthetics for a long time. Arguing that it can no longer be exhaustively explained in terms of postmodernism, which is being replaced by metamodernism.
Metamodernism is a term for expressing changes in modern culture that has gone beyond postmodernism, which somewhat prematurely proclaimed "the end of history". Despite the postmodern irony and cynicism that seemed to be ingrained in us, the desire for meaning — for sincere and constructive progress and self-expression - gradually began to form the dominant cultural mode.

Книга рассматривает М. с трех основных позиций: историчность, аффект и глубина, каждой из которой посвящен раздел, состоящий в свою очередь из нескольких статей. Историчность - специфическая модальность, в которой человек предстает перед самим собой через пребывание в истории. В отличие от постмодернизма. провозглашавшего конец истории, М. утверждает режим историчности с его восприятием нарратива (где модернизм смотрел в будущее. а постмодернизм в прошлое, М. видит настоящее, не отрицая прошлого и будущего) .
Аффект М. прямо противоположен холодному равнодушию постмодернизма. На смену которому в книгах, фильмах и сериалах (а также фотографии, стенд-апе etc) приходит тепло, приязнь и сочувствие. Где постмодернизм смеялся "над", М смеется "вместе с". Для меня часть Аффекта была наиболее интересной, еще и потому, что в качестве объекта рассмотрения в ней привлекались книги и авторы, со многими из которых знакома, и впечатление о прозе Али Смит, Зэди Смит, Джонатана Франзена, Роберта Фостера Уоллеса, Марка Данилевского, Крис Краус, Джеффри Евгенидиса - совпадает с аналитикой автора. А вводимое им понятие постироничного билдингс-романа и расшифровка автофикшна многое объяснили.
Глубина М. в противоположность скольжению постмодернизма по поверхности событий, явлений, характеров среди стремительно расползающейся ткани бытия, позволяет применить средства проникновения в глубину уже к поверхности, вернуться к модернизму в условиях массового общества, не утратив привнесенной постмодернизмом гипертекстуальности.

Plenty of intriguing ideas in here, but for all the talk about writing in a way that moves beyond academic disciplines, this was certainly constrained by the highly disciplined writing styles used by each author. I've read a lot of theory in my time, but the essays in this book were way too dense, convoluted, and overused academic jargon. Several pieces were far easier and clearer to read than the rest, and those sections do reveal some compelling theories on the arts and contemporary culture. However, the accessibility and readability overall is below where it should be. I found myself struggling to get through each page after a short while, as much as I was interested in much of the earlier topics.

"The Dutch School’s Metamodernism: Historicity, Affect and Depth After Postmodernism is a great book that may very well establish their metamodern cred as successors to Fredric Jameson’s critical foothold, although fully realized metamodernism may in fact be ‘the cultural logic of post-capitalism’, just as Jameson’s Postmodernism was The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism. This is certainly what I aspire to help define in advance of it arising.
"The book Metamodernism is highly specialized, which leaves ample room for other scholarship on metamodernism, but also leaves out some important things. Its major flaw, in my view, is not addressing (at all) the substantive crises in sociology and philosophy that are also at the root of the emergence of metamodern idea(l)s and theories. There is also little futurology in their metamodernism, despite other notable schools of thought such as accelerationism or transhumanism existing and also being active in this time period.
"Despite these shortcomings, I hope this book becomes required reading for scholars and think tanks, or any students studying postmodernism and beyond, so we could at least adopt a common ‘language’ (as they describe it) to reduce the excessive redundancy and conflict in academia and contemporary social thought. This is what the ‘principle of abstraction’ from computer science does, and is much needed in our cultural programming."

In this book it is argued that we are seeing a shift in cultural logics that moves beyond both modernism and post-modernism.
According to meta-modernists, we see the
cultural logics at work in a society expressed as ‘structures of feeling’ that respond to certain
shifts or developments within Western capitalist culture.
The meta-modernists show that within a cultural logic we can find this structure of feeling
and affects expressed in how people experience socio-political reality. According to
them, our cultural logic is shifting from postmodernism, to meta-modernism, that is neither
modern (like the Enlightenment) nor postmodern, but expresses something new. Beneath the
surface of our cultural logic we can see a need for critique, but we have yet to find a proper
vocabulary for it.
As the authors themselves note:
"This book is an attempt to create such a language [of metamodernism]… to come to an understanding of our current historical moment, a language that allows us to come to terms with the gap between what we thought we knew and the things we experience in our daily lives.” p. 3
“I summarize metamodernism as a new cultural, political, scientific, and social movement representing a post-ideological, open source, globally responsive, paradox resolving, grand narrative.”
And: “Metamodernism is an evolution of postmodernism, and it comes from people who acknowledge how terrible and fractured everything and everyone is — a knowledge that’s the sum and substance of our postmodern inheritance (...)."
"To be a metamodernist is to adopt what’s called a “romantic response to crisis,” and to do so by trying to see and use the whole of the internet’s field of information.”
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to come to an understanding of contemporary cultural reaction to recent and current societal developments.

A hit or miss collection of cultural criticism essays which explores the specifics of den Akker and Vermeulen’s notion of ‘metamodernism’—a broad and wide-ranging "structure of feeling” that oscillates between the affective modes and theoretical moves of Modernism and Post-Modernism. Den Akker and Vermeleun acknowledge how ambiguous and arcane this definition is (indeed this problem is explored early in the collection (26)). Hence, they’ve designed this collection as a necessary supplement to their theoretical framework in order to show that it can be consistently and widely applied. Since metamodernism is a new concept with few in-depth studies, this volume has a lot of responsibility to live up. Ultimately, the collection accomplishes enough to keep metamodernism in the academic conversation, but its poor messaging and editing may severely limit how seriously it is taken. And it certainly hasn’t gained enough clarity to be useful or wieldy in everyday discussions of pop culture.

The contributor’s subjects range from popular sitcoms like Seinfield, Family Guy, Community, and Louie to David Foster Wallace's attempts at sincere reflexivity to the quirky films of Wes Anderson to Toni Morrison’s difficult moral lessons in Beloved to political strategies of the British New Labour Party. The contributors organize their analyses with one of three themes (as seen in the subtitle): historicity, affect, and depth. While historicity, affect, and depth are not per se elements of metamodernism, the changes within these categories over time from postmodernism to our present moment are claimed to represent the metamodern feeling. The better essays focus on somewhat standard, straightforward criticism of cultural artifacts. The worse essays try to connect analysis to theoretical shifts and get mired in their own mixed academic jargon.
Editing Fiasco
This collection is in dire need of editing—both for general clarity and grammar. Every essay contains frequent, confusion-creating errors. Here's a blatant offender with two wording mistakes (emphasized in bold font) and a missing period:
As a simple example of better editing, take the conclusion of Raoul Eshelmen's "Notes on Performatist Photography." Eshelman tells us that he has "defined [a] new direction by isolating what the Russian Formalists called priemy or devices — technical procedures that have certain functional effects that are open to direct description" (198). But this is the first mention of the concept 'priemy' in the essay (which Eshelman implicitly recognizes in providing us a definition). Why wait till the conclusion to define a key concept for analyzing photography? It's not even clear that this concept is needed or adds to his analyses, it comes across as ad hoc or sophomoric.
I was previously familiar with metamodernism so I could almost always infer what authors meant or see the theoretical implications, but such editing mistakes are likely to confound and put off the uninitiated or unforgiving reader.
Final Thoughts
The collection is useful but doesn’t succeed in its effort to clarify metamodernism. At most it establishes an additional set of cultural artifacts for academic discussions of metamodernism.

В холодном космосе постмодерна нельзя выжить, - а выжить очень хочется, отсюда и продолженная авторами метафора Лиотара: попавший в кораблекрушение знает, что все острова одинаково плохи и хороши, но ради выживания и обретения смысла он не будет бесконечно плавать, а останется на одном из них.
Хорошо дополняет это описание аллюзия на детское восприятие мира. Метамодернизм - это попытка "быть и видеть мир по-детски", выйти из солипсического круга и идти навстречу миру и "другому".
Находка: кроме самого слова "метамодернизм", находкой стало выражение "структура чувства". Исчерпывающей дефиниции авторы не дают и ссылаются на толкование классика постмодерна Джеймисона, но в целом, это что-то вроде той самой "атмосферы", на которую обычно ссылаются кинокритики и игрожуры. Что-то вроде вайба, интенции, настроения, который прочитывается за словами и образами и которые отчетливо могут позволить отнести текст к определенному направлению.

This book is a rather interesting book of essays, but because the various authors of these authors don’t seem to quite agree that Metamodernism is the name to be given to the zeitgeist of our age, this book doesn’t quite cohere the way later books about Metamodernism such as The Listening Society do.
However, as a philosophical reader it always fascinated and delights me when I see the beginning of new ideas relevant to me interests, and the exploration of the idea of reconstruction, super hybridity and oscillation at it pertains to the new experience relative to the older Modern and Postmodern paradigms were a treat.
If you’re interested in tracing the development of Metamodernism, this book may be for you. 😊

збірка статей про метамодернізм за редакцією нідерландських батьків-засновників цього метамодернізму ТВ і РвдА і однієї пізньої матері ЕҐ.
бажання звести метамодерн до трьох основних концептів, заявлених в назві, хороше, але дописи учасників усе ж теоретично виходять за межі тріади, та й деякі дописи дуже далекі від метамодерну і хочуть втекти то в постіронію, то в перформатизм, то в постправду. крім цінного вступу й есеїв Ґіббонс про афект і автофікшн, виділю хіба текст Константіну про 4 типи постіронії та статтю про ситкоми. інше необов'язкове.
