Benyamin (born 1971, Benny Daniel) is an Indian novelist and short story writer in Malayalam language from Nhettur, Kulanada, Pattanamtitta district of the south Indian state of Kerala. He is residing in the Kingdom of Bahrain since 1992, from the age of twenty, and his works appear regularly on Malayalam publications in Kerala.

After reading the award-winning ആടുജീവിതം, I had come to another work by Benyamin with high hopes. I must confess that I was sorely disappointed. These stories are all written in the romantic tradition, which was the norm in Malayalam literature until Modernism took flower through the gifted pens of writers like Vijayan,O.V., Padmarajan and Sethu. Romanticism, which was all very well in its day, suddenly seemed to wilt in the harsh glare of the Modernistic eye. Now, even in this Post-Modern age, a return to the sweet sorrows of that bygone age is impossible (at least for me). Hence the failure of this collection to impress.

Benyamin is not a great wordsmith: the main attraction of ആടുജീവിതം was its simple language without embellishments. However, without a poignant story to tell, such a narrative style falls flat. And in the case of this particular book, the large number of typos and misspellings did not help either.

The positive thing is: these are the writings from the author's formative years. He has come a long way since then. Let's hope for more novels of the calibre of ആടുജീവിതം in future.

മലയാളികൾക്കായി ആടുജീവിതം വരച്ചു കാട്ടിയ ബെന്യാമിന്റെ ആദ്യ പുസ്തകമാണ് യുത്തനേസിയ എന്ന ഈ കഥാസമാഹാരം. യുത്തനേസിയ (Euthanasia - ദയാവധം) ഇതിലെ ഒരു കഥയുടെ തലക്കെട്ടാണ്. ജീവിതകാലം മുഴുവൻ സ്ഥിരബുദ്ധിയില്ലാതെ കഴിയാൻ വിധിക്കപ്പെട്ട കുഞ്ഞിന് പിറന്നു വീണയുടൻ സ്വന്തം അച്ഛൻ കൊടുക്കുന്ന സ്വാതന്ത്യം. ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിന് ഈ പേരിനേക്കാൾ ചേരുന്നത് നഷ്ടങ്ങളുടെ പുസ്തകം എന്നാവാം. കാരണം ഓരോ കഥകളും നഷ്ടങ്ങളുടേതാണ്. വിഷയങ്ങളിൽ മുന്നിട്ടു നിൽക്കുന്നത് പ്രണയനഷ്ടം തന്നെ. മിക്ക കഥകളിലെയും നായകന്റെ പേര് ബെന്യാമിൻ. നഷ്ടപ്രണയമായി പലയിടങ്ങളിൽ ഒരു അരുന്ധതി കടന്നു വരുന്നു. പ്രണയം, വിരഹം, ചതി, മരണം എല്ലാം അതാതിന്റെ വേഷങ്ങൾ കെട്ടിയാടുന്നു.

ഒരു സാധാരണ സായംകാലം, അരുന്ധതി: ഒരു ശൈത്യസ്വപ്നം, യാത്രയുടെ അന്ത്യം, മഗ്ദലന, യുത്തനേസിയ, ഒരു വിവാഹ ക്ഷണക്കത്തിന്റെ മറുപടി, കണ്ണീരുറവകൾ, ഒലിവുകൾ മരിക്കുന്നില്ല, ഗോൽഗുത്ത, ഞങ്ങളുടെ ആശകൾ, മാർജാരപുരാണം, അവസാനത്തെ ആൾ, മരീചിക, പ്രണയസന്ധ്യകൾ എന്നിവയാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുള്ള കഥകൾ.

ബെന്യാമിന്റെ ആദ്യകാല കഥകൾ ആയതിനാലാവാം, എല്ലാ കഥകളും എടുത്തു പറയത്തക്കതായിട്ടില്ല. എങ്കിലും യാത്രയുടെ അന്ത്യം, യുത്തനേസിയ, മരീചിക - ഈ കഥകൾ ഞാൻ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുന്നു.
