This guide to our planet shows paper being engineered like never before.
Paper World: Planet Earth uses ingenious paper cutouts to reveal the amazing details of our planet, from bubbling volcanoes to rushing rivers to the boiling hot interior of the Earth. With detailed art by studio Bomboland, a fact-filled text, and flaps and die-cuts on every spread, this one-of-a-kind novelty book will appeal to readers of all ages.
Bomboland is an illustration studio comprising Maurizio Santucci and Elisa Cerri. The name comes from the Italian word for bumblebee, an insect known for being hardworking and industrious. The studio is based in Italy.
#partner Thank you to @candlewickpress for this review copy. "Planet Earth" written and illustrated by Bomboland released in September and is available now! . Remember when you were a kid and you'd have to do a report on something and so the only place to turn was the old, boring, informational books in the library? I am so grateful that is changing these days. This book is fantastic for those kids who are fascinated by the planet beneath our feet. What is especially exciting about this book is the incredible paper cut outs you find on each page. Each page has cutouts that lead to the next page which feature more cut outs that lead to the next page. It's a great demonstration of how our world all works together. There is even a few flaps you can lift for more information. The art is incredible also--the pictures are vibrant and colorful and don't take away from the incredible information inside. . The book is obviously about the Planet Earth but it breaks it down into certain features like tectonic plates, volcanoes, caves, and the weather. The writing in the book is simple and easy for children of many ages to read while also still being incredible informative. I learned a ton from this book (Did you know that if you put each strip of coast in the world end to end, they would measure more than 300,000 miles???). . This book is so much fun and I'm putting it aside for an upcoming weather unit I'm doing with my kids. They are going to love reading through and seeing how it all works together! . Thank you again to @candlewickpress for this review copy!
Another book that I saw in passing at the library and felt the need to check out. In terms of content, it is a fairly basic children's introduction to earth sciences: geology, weather, volcanism, oceans, etc. Nothing really new here for any fully educated adult, and neither being nor having access to a child I can't really say how effective it is for its target audience. But I can say that it is a beautiful book. On a basic level it is a lift-the-flap book, but many of the flaps are cleverly designed so that the reverse side of the flap integrates into and alters the larger image on the page when fully unfolded. And the fact that the flaps require double thick pages is cleverly exploited: features such as ocean depths or rivers are cut into the upper layer of paper to create a greater visual (and tactile) sense of depth to an image, further enhanced by places that fully cut through the page to integrate part of the image from the following or preceding page spread. There was obviously a fair bit of thought put into the layout of the book so that all of the pages worked together and so features could be included without interfering with each other. I feel like the artistry of the book would be wasted on the target audience; but maybe not. Or maybe the intention is to attract parents, even if the book is primarily for their kids.
Paper World’s Planet Earth is a beautiful “large” format book, with gorgeous illustrations of our planet. This is a beautiful book to gift to ANY age group. I would recommend this for ages 4+ as it gives a good introduction to the geography of our Earth. The book has a double page spread layout. Each double spread describes one topic with a small blurb as introduction, die-cut formatted illustrations and flip-the flap inserts to peek inside the “layers” of the geography. Readers will delight in interesting snippets such as : From Intro page: “In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, a huge chunk of earth’s crust is missing. The mantle here is completely exposed.“ From Glaciers page: “Glaciers that reach the sea break up into small icebergs that float away and eventually melt.“
The publishers have formatted this book as:
Our Planet (Introduction page) Tectonic Plates Volcanoes Mountains Glaciers Rivers Caves Deserts Coasts Ocean Floor Weather Storms The back of the book has a small glossary of keywords and definitions for younger readers.
Paper World’ Planet Earth is a lovely publication for your household library. A volume that you and family can read together, learn together. This is a book that readers will keep coming back to.
Planet Earth is a fun lift-the-flap book where readers will enjoy learning about their planet in a fun way, lifting flaps to uncover more facts about the Earth.
The many different topics this book covers are Volcanoes, Storms, Deserts, Glaciers, and many more! This book will teach readers many new vocabulary words, such as a Siphon, which means a passageway that is completely flooded with water. It will also teach you knew things about things you already knew about! Did you know there are actually 9 types of clouds? It’s true! There are the Cirrocumulus, Cirrus, Cirrostratus, Altocumulus, Altostratus, Stratocumulus, Cumulus, Nimbostratus and Stratus. This book will teach you about all of them. I would recommend this book to readers ages 8-12.
This book should be rated 5 stars because of its fun flaps and bright colors. No matter how many times you read this book, you will always learn something new. I will be reading this book over and over to learn new facts I missed the last time. Reviewed by Logan P., 11, Greater New York Mensa
This book is beautifully illustrated and constructed. Each page contains several moveable pieces and interactive pictograms that support the reader’s understanding of different characteristics of our planet Earth. Readers get to see the inside of a volcano, the formation of different types of mountains (who knew there was more than one type of mountain?!), and a cave system. This book is similar to cross section books, but is meant for a younger reader with illustrations that are colorful, visually appealing, but not as detailed.
Most notable is the page that describes different cloud formations. The book uses flaps and cutaway portions that allow you to peek through to the next layer making this a very exciting read for young elementary readers (K-5th).
While the usual and interesting construction is what makes this book so enjoyable, it also makes this book very difficult to circulate for a library.
Paper-cutting is the art of cutting paper and this book takes this laser-cut multi-dimensional art-form deep into the earth’s core. I just love the creative use of vivid colors to create dimension, texture, and shadow that literally jump off each 2-page spread. Along with its in-depth scientific teachings, this book creates a sense of wonder. On top of the already multi-layered aspect of the pages, there are flaps and die-cuts that offer more in-depth information about this big beautiful planet we call home. This truly one-of-a-kind book will appeal to readers of all ages and will bolster the curiosity of budding scientists, environmentalists and highly curious people!
This is great fun! You know those books where there is a cutout and you turn the page thinking you know what it will be? Yep, this is one of those BUT I can guarantee you won't be able to figure out how this cutout will morph sometimes. It really is fun and the illustrations are amazing. There are lots of flaps to lift throughout the book as well. A fun, interactive book all about our Planet Earth!
