The art styles in this single book vary from "it grows on you" to excellent, to not very good. This doesn't make for a very consistent read.

As for the story, the tone is odd. Abnett makes Sola foul-mouthed, and Tara becomes even more superhuman than John Carter, for some inexplicable reason, when visiting Earth. John Carter and his son Carthoris (changed to Cathoris in this book) are mind-controlled and become the villain's henchmen of the story, killing numerous innocent foes.

In the past, I greatly enjoyed Abnett's work on Majestic (awesome series!), but though there are some nice touches here (like Dejah Thoris visiting author Edgar Rice Burroughs while on Earth), this story didn't come together.
