The past few decades saw the rise of mindfulness meditation and other practices in the mainstream media and other sources. Scientific research validated some claims, but mindfulness is not a panacea for all ills. What is mindfulness, though? It is the practice of being aware of an event, sensation, or thought without judging it. If you ever read Dune by Frank Herbert, I think of the Litany Against Fear as the same idea.

Mindfulness is a book by Dr. Patrizia Collard that discusses the eponymous practice. According to the author, mindfulness is more than being aware of the present moment. Mindfulness is a therapeutic technique capable of conquering addictions and other things. I don't know much about Dr. Collard, but she studied with Zen Masters and received a Ph.D. in a related field. She is a psychotherapist and holds degrees in Psychology. Her focus is on stress management.

I read a lot of books on the topic of mindfulness, so it isn't new to me. Collard writes in an engaging, easygoing, and flowing manner. She includes plenty of examples and practical applications. The only improvement would be having it as an audiobook. Looking at the page to see what to do breaks my concentration on my breath.

On the other hand, there are plenty of chapter breaks and little sections to read. It has cross-referencing to focus on prior areas of the book, and those sections build on each other. I was interested in the mental well-being aspect of mindfulness since the abundance of the present and other stuff is from Buddhism.

The book is British, and you can tell from how it spells some words, like practice. Collard does a great job of writing for a general audience. Whether you are a beginner or an intermediate practitioner, you would benefit from reading this book.

As I mentioned, the book would be better in the audiobook format. That way, you don't have to look down constantly. Thanks for reading my review, and see you next time.
