Tantor Media presents a collection of some of the most popular Christmas stories read by two award-winning narrators. This special anthology will transport listeners back to the Christmases of their youth, when they first heard these holiday tales. From Henry Van Dyke's classic Christmas blessing, "Keeping Christmas," to Charles Dickens's popular tale of yuletide redemption, "A Christmas Carol," More Favorite Stories of Christmas Past has something for everyone. Also included is Louisa May Alcott's inspirational "A Christmas Dream, and How It Came True," as well as four other Christmas classics that can be heard and shared year after year.
The classics that can be found in More Favorite Stories of Christmas Past are: "Keeping Christmas" by Henry Van Dyke; "A Christmas Dream, and How It Came True" by Louisa May Alcott; "The Last Dream of the Old Oak" by Hans Christian Andersen; "Christmas at Red Butte" by Lucy Maud Montgomery; "The Little Match Girl" by Hans Christian Andersen; "Rosa's Tale" by Louisa May Alcott; and "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens.
Henry Van Dyke (1852-1933) was an American Presbyterian clergyman, educator, and author. He graduated from Princeton in 1873, and from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1874. He was pastor of the Brick Presbyterian Church, New York City (1883-99), professor of English literature at Princeton (1899-1923), and U.S. minister to the Netherlands (1913-16).
Among his popular inspirational writings is the Christmas story The Other Wise Man (1896). As President Wilson's ambassador to the Netherlands from 1913, Van Dyke was a first-hand witness to the outbreak of World War I and its progress, and was a key player in the President's diplomatic efforts to keep the U.S. out of the conflict.
Great book for some holiday reading. Includes Dickens's "A Christmas Carol," and a couple of short stories by Louisa May Alcott. Does include one fairly depressing story titled, "The Match Girl," but overall, pretty uplifting.
Simon Prebbles and Joyce Bean did a great job narrating these holiday stories. I was pleasantly surprised that most of the stories were new to me & took advantage of the accompanying pdf file to read along with the narration for a few of them.
An audio book to enjoy that will get you into the Christmas spirit. Some stories were new to me and most well known and loved. The narrator of Dicken's Christmas Carol is amazing. I think I will try to play this every year. You forget how wonderful and rich both the writing and the imagery are. I found myself backing up the track to listen to several parts over again. I will highly recommend this to my friends and fellow readers.
Listened to these stories via audiobook. I never listened to A Christmas Carol before so that was the icing on the cake with this book. I enjoyed all of the stories especially the Last Dream of the Old Oak. I always love Louisa May Alcott. Now if only I counted each of these stories toward my reading goal individually!
The stars vary because there were multiple stories... It ended with a Christmas Carol which was the very best of the stories. Some were better than others but they're all pretty short so even if they're not for you... It doesn't take long to get through
This was so great. I love good old Christmas stories. Christmas Carol may be my absolute favorite of them, but all of these were good to great. Enjoy, and remember what the season is all about.
Many stories I remember from childhood, and a couple completely new ones! Each one was entertaining and had a strong moral or idea conveyed. Love that A Christmas Carol ends the collection!!
