When the original New Teen Titans formed a school to mentor and train young heroes, they wanted to help save the world. Years later, Titans Tower is a monument to a graveyard of pupils lost in a terrible battle. Returning to the site of their greatest failure, Nightwing, Starfire, Beast Boy, and Cyborg join Raven to plot a course to face off against the evil that destroyed their team and school. Loyalties are questioned and motives are suspect as the former teen heroes must turn to the mysterious Red X-a former student-for help. Don’t miss the first comics appearance of this Red X, previously seen only in the hit animated TV series Teen Titans Go!
One great thing about Future State, it looks like DC is letting some new voices take a crack at these characters. I'm seeing quite a few names I've never seen before doing the writing and the art.
This is actually the book I'm the most excited to read more of! Not just because it's a Dick that sounds more like the Nightwing I know and love. Not just because I love Emiko Queen and can't wait to read more of her. Not just because there's a new African American bat character I've never seen or heard of before. I like the character dynamics in this book a lot and that's what made me enjoy this a lot.
Also, there's a lot of rumors that Red X is my favorite character and I'm excited to see if that's true. I know it's blasphemy, but I didn't watch the cartoon Teen Titans and apparently that's where Red X was introduced. He makes a point of saying "Red X used to stand for something" and I have no frame of reference for what that is.
However, this is the only Future State comic I've read thus far that has the art, the character work AND the story that excites me the most, so I'm really looking forward to the next part.
I don't know about this one. Lots of characters. Lots of mysteries. Not much action. I'm not sure who we're up against or who the Red X is. May have to wait till this one gets sorted properly.
So, I'm writing up all the Future State stuff on Comics Years, and divided it into DC and Gotham...given the tone and everything that happens in this issue, I think I'm placing with the Gotham titles, even if it doesn't take place there.
Wow, this introduction to the "future" of the Teen Titans was packed full. I barely know where to start, as I'm still recovering from my first pass at this story. The basic plot goes as follows: an event has leveled Titan's Tower, destroying the building and killing several heroes, new and old. The tower had become a school for new heroes, run by the original Teen Titans team, i.e. the TV show team (some continuity issues there, but I'm down for it). With the apocalypse raging throughout the world, the surviving Titans are looking for a way to save it all, and with the return of Cybeast to the fold, they may just have their answers.
I loved, loved, loved this issue. It was fast paced but it never sacrificed character. I loved the distinct differences between the past of the team, happy and ready to train the next generation of heroes, and the current, desperate group of heroes that we see. It's a brilliant, quick way to show the stakes of their fight and why some aren't necessarily as invested in it as others are. I especially enjoyed the characterization of Dick Grayson, one of my all-time favorite literary characters. I liked seeing him at his lowest point because that is when characters tend to make their most interesting (if not their worst) decisions.
I also just enjoyed the fanservice of this story. Not only did Tim Sheridan include a bunch of new, interesting heroes (I want to know more about Chupacabra and Bratgirl!). Not only did he build the base team of Titans from the original TV Show variation. He also included Titans from some of the most iconic variations of the team, like Johnny Thunder, Crush, Bunker, Emiko (Arrow), and even Shazam. I truly appreciate the amount of research this must have taken, and can't wait for the next issue.
I’m really tired of Titans stories turning into bloody massacres and post apocalyptic nightmares. I like Tim Sheridan but this was a miss for me. It was cheap. So far in this event Wally West and Donna Troy have gotten the worst deal. DC seems to hate them for some reason. If you like the Titans in misery then sure this is for you. He also doesn’t get that Raven never used that stupid chant in the comics ever. That’s cartoon only. Titans Academy has got to be better than this.
I decided to buy this because I was intrigued by the fact that this book features the first comic book appearance of Red X. There was some cool alternate future (What If...) type material here, but it didn't quite resonate with me as much as I hoped it would. I don't know a lot about the history of the Teen Titans, and I think I would have enjoyed this more if I did. I will say, the last page was very intriguing, though.
Another great book in this series, great artwork. We see the return of Red X from the cartoon show to the comics, cool! Did not understand the ending though. Is Dick Deathstoke or Red X.
