couldn’t sleep and this was a shorter read near me, so i ended up reading the entire thing and I’m a little ????? not the greatest depiction of Frida’s life, I’ve gotta say?? mostly bought this so i could have a thinner book full of her art to fit by my bed, so i could look at her paintings, wasn’t really buying it in hopes that the writing was great, but i at least expected it to be better than it was.

Hoewel de stijl van Frida Kahlo’s werk niet altijd direct mijn persoonlijke voorkeur heeft, is zij als artieste altijd een bron van inspiratie voor mij geweest. Haar krachtige persoonlijkheid, doorzettingsvermogen en de manier waarop ze haar fysieke en emotionele pijn vertaalt naar kunst, maken haar tot een unieke figuur in de kunstgeschiedenis. Dit boek biedt een mooie inkijk in haar leven en werk.

Hervorragender Einstieg in das Leben und Werk Frida Kahlos oder auch wunderbar, um die Grundlagen hierzu aufzufrischen
Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) ist mittlerweile wohl jedem*jeder ein Begriff. Sie gilt als eine DER Malerinnen und Surrealist*innen des 20. Jahrhunderts, als eine der bekanntesten Mexikaner*innen und nicht zuletzt als Stilikone.
Allgemein bekannt sind außerdem ihre lebenslangen, schweren Leiden nach einem Busunglück in jungen Jahren, ihre komplizierte Beziehung zu ihrem zweimaligen Ehemann und Künstler-Kollegen Diego Rivera, ihrer beider Liebschaften sowie ihre Nähe zum Kommunismus.

Als Künstlerin mit Behinderung fühle ich mich ihr schon lange auf besondere Weise verbunden und hege eine Faszination für sie und ihre Werke, die wie so oft nicht voneinander zu trennen sind.

Dies ist auch der Ausgangspunkt dieses Bildbandes – es beginnt chronologisch und führt die Leser*innen nach einer kurzen Einleitung Schritt für Schritt ein: zunächst in die zentralen Punkte ihrer Lebensgeschichte und anschließend in ihre (wichtigsten) Werke.
Dabei unterstützt wird man durchweg von Fotografien der vielen hier genannten Persönlichkeiten, zu denen Frida Kontakt hatte, ihr selbst, sowie ihre Familie und ihr Haus mit Diego.
Ebenfalls abgebildet sind natürlich zahlreiche hochwertige Drucke ihrer Bilder, welche immer gut in den Kontext eingebettet und mit einer möglichen Deutungsweise versehen sind.
Hilfreich war dabei immer, dass, wenn auch in späteren Textpassagen erneut Bezug genommen wird, ein entsprechender Seiten-Verweis auf die jeweilige Fotografie oder das jeweilige Bild zu finden sind.

Auch wenn ich vorab bereits die Filmbiographie „Frida“ gesehen und das Hörbuch „Frida Kahlo und die Farben des Lebens“ von Caroline Bernard gehört hatte, sollte man dieses Buch ohne dieses Vorwissen gut lesen und verstehen können.

Für den Umfang von 112 Seiten und absolut angemessenen Preis von 10,-€ bietet dieser Bildband natürlich keine umfangreiche Biographie, dient jedoch hervorragend als Einstieg in das Thema oder dazu, dessen Grundlagen aufzufrischen! Große Empfehlung für alle Interessierte!

I loved the works printed and explored in the book. Frida’s life is tragic, inspiring and relatable in peculiar ways. There are simply too many men like Diego Rivera. I feel for Kahlo. Her ability to love so deeply injured her greatly. The author lays out her life in terms of its events and the people she loved. I enjoyed the structure. There are some typos in this book, which I think is understandable because it is such a small press. But, I did not like how the author referred to indigenous peoples as "Indians." That was very off for a book printed so recently. Overall, this work filled me with the desire to read more about Frida and to buy some art prints.

Loved learning about the high level brushstrokes of Kahlo’s life. Confused about the ordering of the book though — transitions weren’t very clear but overall good skim/coffee table book.
