In What’s Your Move? Nicolette Mashile, founder of Financial Bunnies and a champion of personal-finance education across the African content, shares stories from her own life and journey with money in order to redefine personal-finance management. An intimate and deeply personal book, in What’s Your Move? Nicolette talks openly about her experiences with money and the way she was brought up. She shares her beliefs about how our everyday behaviour influences how we manage our finances, and how, in spite of knowing better, we sometimes make the wrong financial decisions. What’s Your Move? is a a challenge to you to make a move that will be financially rewarding. A promise to yourself that you are more than capable of managing your money.
If you’ve read any other personal finance book you’ll realise nothing new is presented in this book. The rules of money are the same and will probably remain the same. What’s fantastic in this book is how easily we tend to make financial oopsies, as uniquely presented by Nicolette’s personal experiences. A relatable, fresh take.
Whats your move by Nicolette Mashile is a book that gives different nuts and bolts of how to handle finances. In her writing, Mashile acknowledges that there is no one-size-fits-all formula of saving and investing...She explains at length the process of buying property, investing vs saving, ensuring a good credit record, living within your means, buying only what you afford, she encourages multiple streams of income & saving. In my opinion, books on finances should always be accompanied by real life experiences, mistakes & for readers to relate & Mashile did just that. A must read book especially at the beginning of the year when financial resolutions are still in memory.
This is a good read, that I would definitely recommend. I particularly enjoyed the personal stories that are attached to the financial lessons, it makes the book personal, relatable and very practical. There is something to learn with each lesson, and it keeps you in deep thoughts about your own financial journey.
Should Nicolette follow up with any books in the future, in line with this one, I would be keen to read them.
Obviously nothing new discussed in this book, however, they way it was presented made a difference as it was more relatable as an African and the concepts were explained in lay terms. The stories also presented the financial lessons in a more understandable format. Personally, I appreciate her focus on the need for introspection and the fact that one has to also look at their emotional intelligence, beliefs and upbringing that dictates one's financial behaviours before anything else. Also, the need to establish personal financial goals because there is no blueprint for everyone. I would recommend it to any young adults about to make their own money, it's a good place to start on the journey to financial literacy.
I learnt alot from the financial lessons presented by Nicolette Mashile. If you need a start-up book for your financial journey, this is a very good book. If you don't know a lot, you will definitely learn in this book. This is also a great gift for your loved ones.
