A great book on the topic of building a successful online course suited to leveraging your strengths. Unfortunately the title mislead me into thinking it was about small businesses in general so I wasn't as interested in the information provided once I caught on to the true subject of the book. The author encourages you to ask many specific questions that will help guide you later in the process.
Summary: The most important thing you can do to ensure your success is to abandon perfectionism and just jump in when creating your first online course. Find something you’re good and passionate about to create a course that shares your expertise. Identify your ideal audience, and market your course specifically to them; You don't need to appeal to everyone.
Diamonds discovered: - Grab a pen and paper, and allow yourself to quickly jot down some sentences in response to the following questions: What are you good at? What comes naturally to you that other people might find very tricky? Also, what can you talk about all day? This is basically asking, what are you passionate about? Finally, ask yourself, what do people ask you for your expertise in? - To develop your first course, delve into the next round of brainstorming. Scribble down some thoughts on these questions: What is the goal of my course? How will it transform my clients’ lives? Once you’ve scribbled down some ideas, ask yourself: Who is my ideal client? Who am I building this course for? - Structure your course to keep your audience engaged and achieving results from the beginning. You need to devote time to thinking about how you’re going to create engagement and a sense of community among your followers. Online courses have dismal completion rates. Many course creators make private Facebook groups for members and encourage students to post updates and answer prompts each week. Others host live question and answer sessions or incentivize members with prizes when they meet weekly goals. - Use simple equipment to record your first course. Whip out your phone and record a welcome video. This is the video that people will receive as soon as they subscribe to the course. Introduce yourself and tell your students about what they can expect over the coming weeks. Don’t worry about a script or finding the perfect lighting. - It’s very important to have a lead magnet on the website. This is a freebie that people can sign up for, like a seminar or master class. In exchange, they give you their e-mail addresses and consent to being part of your mailing list. Engage through social media, creating pages on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn. The pages will give your followers the chance to learn more about the course as well as your unique personal brand. Additionally, you could invest in Facebook ads, write blog posts using keywords to make sure you come up faster in search engine results (SEO) or market yourself through live events, articles, or podcast interviews. Regardles, make sure that you spend no more than 10 percent of your revenue on marketing.
Finally! A business book which manages to be both super instructional and practical and yet super engaging and entertaining to read.
This book is the 2021 version of Tim Ferris’s popular 4 hour workweek. Just like that book it gives readers a practical and actionable guide to how to build a business that is both profitable, scaleable and can help you live life on your own terms.
Tina is super generous in sharing all her own knowledge and the very processes, tools and ways she has built her own mega successful online business.
In this handbook, I found a lot of tips that can be used to start an online course business. If you are not familiar with what digital tools you can use and how the digital space operates, this is an excellent guideline and will save you time and money. However, I couldn't recommend this as reading material to gain inspiration or insights from. You will probably not enjoy reading this book page by page, but if you are looking for an answer to a certain question, you can check the table of contents or the section with recommended resources.
What a fabulous read, chock-full of useful tips and information. I highly recommend this to anyone starting an online business as it provides the perfect roadmap. However, it then branches off to cater specifically to the online education space, but there is still lots of juice to glean from this section.
A handy resource and guide for someone who wants to kick off with an online course. Handy to have the information and resources needed for how to get it started. The book is definitely aimed at women so I felt weird reading it but practically it’s useful.
I don’t have an intention to create an online course anytime soon. Maybe not for another 24 months, yet I still found this book extremely helpful. The knowledge about business and the tangible advice on software etc was SO helpful! I will reread this book in 12 months time for sure!!
