Remote. Mysterious. Deadly. Situated off the Normandy coast, Mont-Saint Michel has been many things in its history: a prison, a siege fortress and an abbey. When Maggie and Laurent—who are struggling with the revelation of a family secret that threatens their marriage—take part in a couples’ counseling weekend on the island they are thrust head first into the setting for a brutal double murder. Because a once-in-a-century storm is bearing down on the island preventing communication with the outside world, their small group of six is trapped on the island—with a murderer. And the clock is ticking. Maggie has only one night to find the killer—and elicit a confession—before the police arrive and go with the obvious evidence—all of which points directly at Laurent. This book is a clean read: no graphic violence, sex or strong language Genre: light culinary cozy mystery, women amateur sleuth. Murder in Mont St-Michel: A riveting mystery thriller set in Provence (A Maggie Newberry Mystery Book 19)
I'm a big fan of The Maggie Newberry series and have been following Susan Kiernan-Lewis since I read book one. Her characters are well-developed, and the plot lines are always a little quirky, sometimes humorous, without a lot of graphic violence; just the right amount of love and sex; a few sub-plots surrounding the private lives of the characters; and illuminating descriptions of areas in France that I'll probably never experience first-hand. I've always given her books a 4 or 5 star rating. For some reason this one left me a little disappointed. Perhaps I was missing the family life now that Maggie and Laurent are empty-nesters. I can't wait for the next book because there were many questions left unanswered in book #19. Will Grace, Maggie's best friend, reunite with her ex-husband? Will Luc be told about his true parentage? Will some or all of the kids return to the vineyard with Maggie's mother? Who is Elodie and how will she fit into the story? I will definitely continue reading this series. The books are pure entertainment!
Loved the Maggie series but disappointed in this book
I looked forward to the next installment of the Maggie series because I have enjoyed the previous books. But, this one was really a sad mess. I felt like I was the one drugged and being run around inside the halls of Mt. St-Michel. I really can’t recommend it.
Murder in Mont St-Michel is the nineteenth book in the Maggie Newberry Mysteries by Susan Kiernan-Lewis. The Maggie Newberry series of books by Susan Kiernan-Lewis turned out to be a great cozy mystery series that kept me engrossed the whole way through. Throughout the series we follow thirty-something, Maggie Newberry, an advertising copywriter who has been unlucky in love. Her ‘normal’ life gets upended when her sister, who has been missing for quite some time, turns up dead. Then to add an extra layer of complication, Maggie must now travel to Frace to locate her young niece that she didn’t even know existed. Arriving in France, thing take a dangerous turn when her sister’s murderer then sets his sights on Maggie and her niece. Add in a sexy Frenchman to add a little extra layer of intrigue, plenty of dramatic developments, secrets, lies, crime & investigation, and the story takes an engrossing turn. From book #2 onwards- Maggie’s sexy (French) boyfriend, who we met in the first instalment has inherited an ancient vineyard in a small rural village in France- so Maggie quits her job and sets off for a year abroad. But trouble soon follows, when a vicious murder takes place, thrusting them into the middle of an investigation that links to a 50year-old murder. What happens makes for intriguing reading….and so the series unfolds, with each book bringing another cozy mystery for Maggie to investigate. Sprinkled with mystery suspense, tension, drama, danger, romance, marriage, motherhood, travel, and recipes- made this series a memorable read. It is a light-hearted and enjoyable series, the ‘clean’ stories mean there are no sexy times, violence, or profanity.
I pre-ordered this book which was published and delivered to my kindle on 9/21/21. However, I waited till yesterday to start the mystery because I can't bear to finish a Maggie Newberry book and it takes the author so long to write the next one!
This is the 19th installment in this series and is one of the best. All of the regular characters feel like family to me...Maggie and Laurent, a great love affair and marriage...Grace and Danielle now running a B&B in Provence near Maggie and Laurent's mas and vineyard...and all the various children who have grown from birth to adolescence since the beginning of the series (I read book #1 in 2014).
The 2nd most visited site in France Mont St-Michel is an island off the Normandy coast that has been many things in its nearly 20 centuries' long history of occupation, including as a prison, a fortification, and an abbey. Maggie and Laurent were having marital problems at least according to Maggie who had scheduled a weekend retreat for relationship counseling on the island. When a huge storm cut off communication with the mainland, one of the guests was murdered. Laurent became the main suspect, so of course Maggie must find the real culprit before the police arrest Laurent. Too many possible suspects and too little time....Very exciting, edge of my seat, typical Maggie solution. Absolutely wonderful book! Can't wait for #20!

Review: Murder in Mont Saint Michel by Susan Kiernan Lewis
Another wonderful addition to the Maggie Newberry Mysteries! The setting of Mont Saint Michel is absolutely breathtaking, and Susan Kiernan Lewis captures both its beauty and its mystery so vividly that I felt transported right into the story.
The mystery itself is clever, full of twists and surprises, and kept me turning the pages late into the night. Maggie, as always, is smart, determined, and completely relatable, and I loved how the story combined suspense with the warmth of family and village life that makes this series so special.
By book 19, you’d think I’d know what to expect, but each installment feels fresh and exciting. This one might even be a new favorite!
I love Mont Saint Michel, and was delighted to find a mystery set there. The mystery was fun and interesting with lots of twists. However I was occasionally confused by times changing (i.e. She was gone 20 minutes, then she was gone an hour, then only half an hour had passed.) Some copy editing would have helped but it didn't detract too much from the story. I was also a bit confused by all the characters at the beginning, this book presumes some knowledge of the previous books, but by the end, I knew the relationships and quite a bit of the back story. I was intrigued and will definitely read more of the books to fill in the details.
Just when I get annoyed at Maggie for her horrendous jumping to conclusions (& questionable luck picking bad guys) things manage to level out in the midst of a great story. A scary and ancient abbey, some very questionable practices of the leader of the couples retreat, and a complex group of characters all come out of Susan’s imagination to create this heart throbbing thriller. Could Laurent really be accused of murder? Thankfully, all ends well at the Dernier household and some interesting events are out on the horizon.
I really enjoyed Susan’s last Maggie mystery. Lots of twists and turns as she sifts through the clues to settle on who the murderer really is. It nice tell revisit her and Laurent snd their family and friends again.
As always this was an awesome read. From he character’s to the suspense and a great ending. The detail of visiting this place from her story makes me want to travel there and have my own discoveries. Congratulations Maggie Newberry Series !
A wonderful round up of an amazing journey through the life of a multi-generational family. Susan Kiernan Lewis understands the complexity of life, people and family. the mystery of it all was a super fun journey.
I really love the Maggie Newberry books but for some reason this one just didn't do it for me at all. I read it in 1 day however but can't say l enjoyed it that much.
Maggie and Laurent always in the midst of a mystery wherever they are. Mont St. Michel - what better place to learn about this magnificent structure and solve two murders.
