It started out as a simple but unpleasant mission—recover bodies from a plane crash that had happened a year earlier. As usual, though, things did not go as planned. Platoon leader Lieutenant Carr was thrust into a position of greater responsibility when the commander fell ill and left him in charge of the company. The plane crash was in the Boi Loi Woods, a haven for the enemy, on an uncharted island in the Saigon River, so they would need a bridge-launching vehicle. And the men from Graves Registration who came along to recover the bodies seemed a little out of place. Along the way, the company discovered a previously unknown rubber plantation and encountered scattered enemy resistance. Finding the crash site turned out to be only the beginning, however, of a prolonged struggle with both the enemy and the elements. Filled with twists and turns, this novel reveals a dark conspiracy and an unexpected change in enemy tactics, as the men of Alpha Company struggle through the mud and deception to courageously complete their mission.
I’ve read a lot of books on the Vietnam war and this one struck a chord with me. It seemed to more accurately reflect the interactions unit members had with each other and made it more believable. Even though the book was written as fiction it seemed to reflect my own experiences with members of my unit in RVN.
As a work of fiction the story reflects plausibility. As happened many real time ops were concealed from the public and the participants never received credit for a job well done!
I really like these books, they’re very engaging, interesting and fun to read. The character development brings me back each and every time. I look forward to the next book (s). Thank you!
Read some of the other books by Allin and enjoyed them. This in not one of them. The story is all over the place and not easily to follow. Jumps around a lot with no rhyme or reason. Lousing ending.
