Beautiful new edition of two of John Howes earlier "how to" books which are long out of print by now. Expect rather insipration than a fully fledged drawing course, although John does go quite systematically through all/ most aspects of his work which is indeed quite informative and the mini-sketching tutorials in the last third might inspire to do more. The art presented in here is stellar, of course.

An artbook that is less a direct lesson how what to do and more of a transparent look at the moment to moment thoughts and choices based off experience. A wide range of topics are covered and all with an open and honest assessment of both what goes well and what goes poorly.

I appreciate that the examples aren't of finished works but more of sketches that are much more accessible to a novice than a fully rendered painting.

One of many quotes I liked: "Nothing dates faster than bad design. History, however, never looks fake. While this doesn't at all mean that historical reference should be a cut-and-paste image bank, it can be a never-ending source of inspiration."

Kirjan nimi on kamala, mutta aavistuksen perusteltu sillä, että teokseen on yhdistetty ja uudistettu kaksi vanhempaa opusta piirtämisestä ja maalaamisesta.

Ihan aloittelija ei välttämättä saa kaikkea irti teoksesta, koska vaikka perusasioita käydään läpi, niin jotkut yksityiskohdat voivat jäädä kryptisiksi (minäkään en joitain asioita ymmärtänyt ensi lukemisella, koska käytetylle englanninkieliselle sanalle löytämäni käännökset tuntuivat kummallisilta). Mutta jos vähän tietää piirtämisestä, niin on jännä nähdä miten Howe tekee asiat ja verrata niitä muiden ohjeisiin.

Asioita, joita opin: Käytetään paljon referenssikuvia, ja niitä kannattaa kerätä ja ottaa valokuvia itse. Kannattaa myös asua paikassa, jonka ympäristöstä saa suoraan sopia malleja, Howe asuu kivenheiton etäisyydellä linnoista ja puista jotka löytävät paikkansa hänen maalauksiin. Ja appiukkoa voi käyttää mallina monta kertaa eri yhteyksissä. Vaikka ihmisten kasvoja saa kuvakirjastoista, niin jos näkee todella hyvän naaman paikallislehdessä, niin kannattaa etsi naaman omistaja käsiinsä. Johtopäätös lukijalle lienee, että aina kannattaa ulkona liikkuessa katsella maisemia, puustoa ja rakennuksia, jos vaikka niitä voisi käyttää jossain omassa työssä. Aina ei tarvitse matkustaa kauas piirtääkseen jotain joka tapahtuu kaukana tai ei missään. (Jos piirtää suomalaista luontoa oikein, niin se voisi olla aika eksoottista jossain kauempana? Helsingin jugend- ja kansallisromanttiset rakennukset ovat ilmeisesti jo olleet osa Howen rakennusmateriaalia haltija-arkkitehtuurille? )

Howe näyttää kuinka pelkällä lyijykynällä ja vesiväreillä pääsee pitkälle, mutta esim. vähän akryyliä voi laittaa mukaan kun on tarvis. Näppärä vihje: Luonnoksen voi skannata ja kääntää peilikuvaksi ja sitten kuultopaperilla siirtää paperille. Ja lopputulos skannataan myös 600dpi, tosin tässä olisi voinut vähän kertoa skannauksesta enemmän, koska ainakaan minun skannerini ei kyllä skannaa värejä oikein ilman jotain temppuja, joita en tunne. Verrattuna James Gurneyn vanhempaan kirjaan digitaalisuus painaa tässä yhä enemmän päälle, mutta kyllä "analogisillakin" menetelmillä pärjää jos osaa ja ei rupea ihan luddiitiksi. (Ja toki Gurney uudemmissa jutuissa netissä puhuu aika samoja.)

Välillä en ole ihan vakuuttunut Howen ihmiskasvoista, mutta maisemat ja lohikäärmeet ovat kyllä hienoja.
