I was hoping that book 2 in this series would have more of an impact, but it felt very similar to book 1: it was okay, but nothing to shout about.

Tris is pictured as an inherently good and kind man who does what is right, but for some reason this character trait also makes him so laid back, he is very much horizontal. Sometimes, for me, his reactions (emotional or otherwise) are borderline lethargic.
Ormur came across as a spoilt brat when still imprisoned, and while we are given a reason for his vile attitude later, it definitely interfered with me connecting to him. He turns out fine in the second half of the book, but somehow I never got to know him enough.

I’m not sure if I will continue with this series should there be a third book. I simply didn’t feel the men and their bond enough, and think much more could have made of the original plot.

Original review January 2021:
I loved this one! As much as I loved its predecessor, The Dragon Hunter’s Son, I didn’t expect to love Chasing Wings more, but I did. Tris was one of the most engaging and likable characters I’ve ever met. He had the sweetest, purest, most courageous heart!

This story took me through a great range of emotions and kept me fully entertained, immersed and engaged from start to finish. I laughed. I cried. I gasped and had my heart drop out. I sighed with happiness and sighed with relief from pent up tension and emotion. I swooned and swooned again. Tris and Ormur were such a lovely and entertaining pair I didn’t want it to ever end!

Once again, with the world on fire and struggling to stay focused and immersed in stories, the Dragon Hunters world was able to distract, consume and comfort me. It was exactly what I needed in the moment and will definitely be one I read again and again.

Technically I think Chasing Wings could be read as a stand alone, but first, why would you want to? The Dragon Hunter’s Son is fantastic! Second, while Tris has only a minor role in TDHS and its main characters have virtually no role in Chasing Wings, there are other side characters which feature in both and knowing them from the previous book, they felt more fleshed out than they might have felt otherwise. That said, if you’re super forgetful, like I am, I don’t think a re-read is necessary even if it’s been awhile between books, though as previously mentioned, TDHS is so good that I’m really happy I read it again before starting Chasing Wings.

Both are KU but ended up loving them so much, I purchased both outright. If you don’t KU, they’re inexpensive and as far as I’m concerned, worth every penny! ✨💖✨

Edited after re-read October 2021:
I knew from reading my original review before starting this re-read that I had loved this one, but I’d forgotten how much and some of the details as to why. I loved it just as much the second time around. There’s a section around 50% that really hits me in the feels. HARD. So much so that when I finished, I went back to read it again, just to shatter and rebuild my heart all over again. Tris is the best! He’s such a sweet, pure hearted, kind soul. I love him SO MUCH. And that scene! Such a punch to the gut, shock to the brain, knife in the heart bliss.

The release of the next in the series, A Deliberation of Dragons, inspired this re-read and I am so happy and thankful it did. It was a delight revisiting these characters and I’m super psyched to get started with the continuation of the series!

2.5 rounded up

I enjoyed the first book to keep reading in this series but was hoping for a stronger book 2, but got more of the same issues. I don't know if it's the length, but the story here didn't feel quite as fleshed out as I wanted it to be. Particularly in the beginning there is time passing between scenes where, presumably, relationships are forming/deepening etc. but we don't really get to see or experience it, which left the connection between the MCs a bit weak. The concept was interesting and I appreciated how it definitely felt different from the first book and the author does address the issues of consent etc. but I did feel the wanking scene was a little odd and kind of came out of nowhere character-development-wise. Maybe it wouldn't have felt so sudden if we'd have both POVs? Like the last book, overall I enjoyed, but I can't help but feel like this was an interesting concept that wasn't executed on to its fullest potential. I'm curious to read the next (final?) book though as we reconnect with both of the couples and I'm hoping maybe them both already being established will make for a stronger read.

Featuring shepherd boy Tris (minor character from the first book), this book starts a few years post epilogue events in The Dragon Hunter's Son and readers should read these books in order for maximum enjoyment; not quite as interesting a plot in comparison though. Unlike the previous book - there's a little more sojourning as Tris seems to have caught the 'wandering bug' in his attempts to find another real-life dragon. The world-building remains 'scant' but the character development is thankfully strong. 3 stars.

I liked this better than the first book! I enjoyed the two main characters more. I wonder if there is more to this series or if it's done? If there's more I'm curious about the 3rd book!

Oh I liked this one even more than the first. There was more tension, more adventure, and more heat. I’m loving the dragons in this series.

What I Liked…
This is the second book in the Dragon Hunters series. I will admit upfront, I loved this book over Dragon Hunter’s Son. Well, and Dragon Hunter’s Son was my favorite dragon book, until now.

The book is a continuation of the first novel but focusing on a different character. Tris, the shepherd from the first book, grows up and sets out in search of a dragon. Not to hunt and kill, but to get to know and to fly with. I enjoyed the characters. Hanna really brings them to life and makes you root for them. She incorporates flaws into them, just like a person in real life.

Hanna does an excellent job of world-building. She describes the place and relationships and scenes in detail, but not to the point where you are bored or seems to throw off the storyline.

The romance….yes there are some hot scenes in the book. I liked personally how the relationship development was a bit of a choatic start, stop, on and off situation. Mixed feelings and fear plaguing the main characters…well until one of them came to their senses.

It is a happily ever after ending, with some clear threads left open for future novels in the series.

The Bottomline…
So, Hanna Dare has a special place in my heart as she was one of the very first authors to embrace me when I started Book Gemz. Despite that, Chasing Wings would be on my recommend list anyway. It is a great story, great world-building, relatable characters, and of course: DRAGONS. The bad part: Now, I am chomping at the bit for the next book in the series!

Thank you Hanna!

Eeeeeee! 😍 This one was so much fun! I'm glad I stuck with the series after feeling a little underwhelmed by the first one. I see that other reviewers were less impressed with this book, but I enjoyed the hell out of it. Tris was just lovely, and even though I'm usually not one who goes for multiple books featuring the same couple, I'm actually thrilled that the next book has both of the original couples from Books 1 & 2 in it again! On to that one now...

a sweet follow up

I really loved this as a follow up to the first book in the series. Tris really does his best to proceed so carefully in his and Ormur's relationship and I love to see it. I also love that Lily makes another strong appearance here in a way that ties the romance all the more satisfyingly into the world. There are very few unresolved plot threads here—making this book feel skillful and satisfying overall. Can't wait to read the next one!

This one was a little slow at the start for me, but otherwise the review would be pretty much the same as the 1st.

3.0 stars. It's a nice escapist read. I'd guess this story is more for those that love dragons, or those looking for an easy fantasy to pass time. Not a lot stood out as great or bad, but it kept me mostly engaged. World was developed, but characters were developed unevenly. The story goes about as one would expect. For me there was nothing particularly memorable, but I will read on to the next book.

This is the second book in the series, and its every bit as sweet and interesting as the first one. There is a sort of enemies (sort of) to lovers trope going on here, that same old Earl (but now in exile) who was the main problem in the first book, and a very likeable MC who is desperate to see a dragon (again). Very much enjoyed this one, and looking forward to the next one.

Tris and Ormur!

This was the second book in the Dragon Hunters series and I loved it! Tris was saved by a dragon in his youth and had dreamed of finding one again. Little did he know he was on the path of finding not only a dragon, but one to hold his heart. Highly recommended

While I enjoyed it, this book wasn’t as quite good as the first one in the series.

Sweet story, though I liked the characters from the first book a tiny bit more. Philip was younger but felt more mature than Tris. That being said, I still very much liked it and will read it again!

While I liked the continued world building of the story I didn't quite see the connection between the two main characters.

Tris’s restless heart takes him on countless journeys; searching for dragons but never finding any.
His last journey isn’t a fruitless one but comes with challenges of its own.

I liked Tris; he was chatty, sweet and considerate. His heart was always in the right place and doing the right thing made him who he was.

Ormarh was angry and frustrated but who could blame. I enjoyed watching these two trying to figure each other out.

I really enjoyed this one.
