I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
Wondering why her father wasn't home yet, Emi was bent on not disturbing her mother’s sleep. The young girl also very much wanted to see her dad. She missed him. Soon enough, the girl ends up in a very different world, with extremely different situations. Her new reality and her home have one person in common, Emi’s father.
With many questions, discoveries, and budding friendships, Emi was not a disappointing read for me. A young girl discovers herself, her talents, and a place where she cannot be ignored; or underestimated. Missing her dad, fear of waking up her angry drunk mother, curiosity about a room she had never noticed, and losing her teddy bear; shove Emi into a strange new world. A world of large plants, her precious bear in protective mode, and strange creatures. Overall, the feel of the people she meets there is excellent. Some are very kind to her in her search for a way home and her missing father. A strange decay and danger are rapidly grabbing at the new world. On her first encounter with the darkness, Emi discovers a talent out of necessity. As she travels further into her journey, the resourceful girl learns more about herself, Teddy, and her father. I love strong and resilient characters. Primeaux doesn't disappoint there. The firm, intelligent queen Vita, loyal and protective friends to battle the dangers with. I feel like this is a coming-of-age story of ten-year-old Emi and the development of the new friends she acquires. Young and old knights, adorable talking otters, and a scientist.
As with all books, a little light proofreading wouldn’t hurt. I enjoyed this book and would read the next part of the series.
***SPOILER ALERT *** SPOILER ALERT*** SPOILER ALERT ***SPOILER ALERT***
For me, the young adult novel drags a little in some spaces. However, the plot and action pick up quickly. I mostly enjoyed the character development between Emi and all the major characters she meets. A large part of her progress happens with the new friends she makes and the challenges she gets through. I appreciate and enjoy how Queen Vita was written. How could I not love strong female characters? The first one readers will run into helps Teddy save Emi from a bad situation. Amoretta is a kind older woman who offers comfort and help; to a scared girl who does not know where she is or how she will get home. The gentle elder sends Emi and trusty Teddy towards the Queen. Indeed finding her will give Emi answers to her many questions.
A brave young man named Arlo joins Emi and Teddy on their journey to the Queen. Arlo is not a very confident part of the army yet, but that changes along the way. Arlo’s talents and maturity progress for the better. The guard goes through intense training at the castle, as do Redrick, the queen’s chief scientist, and Emi. Further into Primeaux’s story, the four friends, skills, and talents are better trained. To match their training, the team on a mission is given tools to enhance their skills. Even though they did not start well together, the whole team fits well. To fight the darkness known as the blight, trust and teamwork are essential.
