Oh, no! Things are going poorly due to miscommunication and misunderstandings? Will Chitose and Kokoro break up?

Hmmmmm. Y'know, I don't actually care.

Of more interest is the romance developing between two of the minor characters around the edges of the of all the central angst and drama. Now this is getting interesting!

Chitose and Kokoro spent the night, but did they ‘spend the night’? In the aftermath, Chitose chafes under the yolk of Kokoro’s fame and breaks up with him. Good thing they don’t still work together constantly or that might get awkward. It all comes to a head at the World Championship, where the quad jumps won’t be the only spin on things that we see...

There are books that I love that are easy to review. There are books that are utter garbage that infuriate me on a primal level. Even easier to review. Then there are books like this, which are so very mediocre and just exist as a bunch of pages with story that are excruciating to review.

Does this do anything particularly wrong? Eh, no. I admit that I am not the biggest fan of figure skating as a sport, so large chunks of the author’s research and technical knowledge are utterly lost on me. Anybody into it would certainly get more from those portions of this book.

But the skating isn’t the real point anyway. It’s the relationships and they’re still going nowhere (of course nothing happened during the overnight and there was never an honest risk of it).

Coming from a book that was about actual adults and actual relationship problems to this just puts it all in an even worse light. Again, I get that the whole point is that these two are quite stunted in their romantic development for reasons, but that doesn’t mean it’s any more interesting for it.

There are some bright spots. The rival skater’s awkwardly blossoming relationship with Kokoro’s sister is now officially sweeter than the main story. Kokoro’s manager remains an always hilarious source of much needed bluntness - when a phone call suddenly cuts to her working her side hustle it’s probably the funniest moment in the book (and so appropriate for that character).

They finally change things up at the very end and that promises that something might get somewhere sooner rather than later. Otherwise this volume is a lot of pent up feelings and misunderstanding what people are saying, which is the hoariest of tropes.

2.5 stars, and it can have three because I don’t dislike it but if I never read another volume I wouldn’t actually care either. I’m not invested in these two at all, if I’m honest, and even with a sprawling cast page to help me I still can’t remember anybody’s name. For me, that says it all right there.

I continue to love the progression of our characters. They both need to move to the next step of the relationship, and sometimes that is hard. I'm hopeful it will all be fine soon!

Today's post is on Knight of the Ice, vol 5 by Yayoi Ogawa. It is 176 pages long and is published by Kodansha Comics. The cover has Kokoro on it dressed as Don Juan. As it is the fifth volume in the series, you need to have read the first four volumes to understand the story. The intended reader is someone who likes josei and sports manga. There is mild foul language, no sex, and no violence in this manga. The story is told from third person close of the main character, Chitose. There Be Spoilers Ahead.
From the back of the book- A Change of Heart
Between busy work schedules an the need to hide their relationship from the public, Chitose begins to wonder if she can even call Kokoro her boyfriend. After all, how can you be in a relationship when you can't even spend time with the you're dating? With the rumors about Kokoro and Liza Shibata continuing to spread- plus another about Kokoro having a fiancée- the stress of it all becomes too much for Chitose. But when Chitose tells Kokoro she wants to break up, how will he take the bad news?

Review- Mild drama in this volume with Chitose and Kokoro still having to work out how to communicate as a couple. So instead of having a hard discussion about what is going with them both they just sort of drift. They do break up but not really. I could see where some readers would be frustrated with this slower plot but I think that for these characters, it is realistic. Kokoro knows that he wants and needs Chitose but she is on the fence about that. Kokoro needs to be up front with her about his feelings and what he wants for the future. I see maybe the beginning of a love triangle but maybe not as the other guy has a great deal of sense. The staking is fun with lots of neat art and discussion about figure staking. But I think that some major plots things are going to be happening in the next volume, so I am looking forward to it.

I give this volume a Four out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.

I rate this volume a 3.5 stars.

This was the first volume where I was actually feeling very annoyed with Chitose. I found myself rolling my eyes at her selfishness and insecurity. Kokoro has so much pressure on him coming from all angles, and yet she can only think about herself and throw herself stupid pity parties, then freakin break up with him THROUGH TEXT MESSAGE, RIGHT BEFORE A MAJOR COMPETITION.
Liiiikkee... seriously? The man barely has time to breath. She knows practically everything he does and has to do, even for the media. His daily schedules are jam packed every single day and she still gets mad and insecure and acts all bitter and jealous. She claims he doesn't think about her feelings when she's the one not thinking of his. Did I mention she breaks up with him through text message?? Right after he's done competing at a smaller meet that qualifies him for a major competition. Smh.

Now that I'm typing this, scrap the .5
This volume was 3 stars only because I'm getting annoyed again.

And Kokoro is still the one to have to make the first move to mend whatever the freak their relationship is now 🙄😒

Anyways. Overall, the volume was fine, I guess. I still got a few chuckles while reading. It felt like there was significantly less comedy in this volume with more focus on angst and internal drama which I found disappointing. I'm hoping volume 6 is better and that Chitose can stop acting like a selfish, insecure little brat. I also hope Kokoro starts to speak his mind more. I'm completely over this misunderstanding/miscommunication. It also doesn't help when Kokoro does try to ask Chitose what's bothering her and she screams at him to figure it out for himself. Smh!! As a woman, I absolutely hate that so many women do this, and I hate to see it perpetuated in books too.

This was definitely my least favorite volume so far due to Chitose's foolishness.

The lead characters are in their 20's but are written like they're in their early teens. Heroine is finally starting to grow a backbone. Will finish out the series but it definitely has a few swing and miss volumes.

I like the way Chitose and Kokoro both really step up and assert themselves in this volume. Sometimes they have seemed a bit too passive, so this is a good change.
A great entry in a terrific ongoing series.

I'm very much enjoying this series so far. There are communication issues between the main leads that are driving me crazy, but it also keeps me reading.

More of a 3.5.

Probably my least favorite of the series. This is about Kokoro and Chitose. I really didn't like the break up and the reasoning behind it when Chitose just needed to TALK TO HIM.

More miscommunication that makes the romance feel so much like they like each other just really in name.

This was probably my least favorite of the volumes so far because of lack-of-communication/misunderstanding angst that dragged a little too long for my liking. Doesn't help that I love Kokoro and Chitose so it sucked to see them in pain.

Even so, there were a lot of funny and cute moments here and there, especially at the beginning and at the end, and character-development-wise, this had to happen, especially for Kokoro.
The stuff going on with Maria, Taiga, Raito, and Fuuta was interesting too.
