Danger is hiding in plain sight in this third installment in YouTube star Connie Glynn’s Rosewood Chronicles, perfect for fans of Meg Cabot and Shannon Hale.
Lottie Pumpkin had always assumed that nobody could be more protected than a princess. That is, until she became one.
In the two years that she’s known Ellie Wolf, the rebellious princess hiding her identity, Lottie has been anything but safe. And now they’re facing the greatest danger yet—Leviathan, the secret organization intent on taking the princess down.
When Leviathan forces them to travel to their beloved Rosewood Hall’s sister school in Japan, they see that nowhere is beyond Leviathan’s long reach. Only a secret band of students calling themselves Banshee seem to be fighting against the evil that Leviathan plans.
But will long-buried secrets take the friends down before Leviathan does?
Connie Glynn is an English author and YouTuber. Her debut novel Undercover Princess, the first in The Rosewood Chronicles, was published in 2017. Glynn is also known for her YouTube videos on the channel Noodlerella. She provided the voice for the character Moxie Dewdrop in the UK cinema version of Dreamworks' Trolls.
THE LOST PRINCESS is thrumming full of magic, adventure, bright characters and thoughtful mystery. Not a flawless book, but the best in THE ROSEWOOD CHRONICLES yet.
Before I start, I will mention that upon acquiring this book at YALC I actually met Connie Glynn, who was lovely and kind. She also confirmed to me that Binah is aromantic, which was awesome.
If you read THE LOST PRINCESS in comparison to UNDERCOVER PRINCESS, the improvement is phenomenal. I didn't read PRINCESS IN PRACTICE all that long ago, so it's exciting to see already that the characters feel and act more real and that the prose is much sharper and stronger. Not flawless, but much better, and much, much more tolerable.
Sayuri was a great addition to the cast. She is the most striking out of the newbies, the most memorable. She has a distinctly no-nonsense personality that provided a great foil to Lottie's "let's all help each other" mindset. That said, she just shies away from feeling entirely like a three-dimensional character. More on that in a moment.
The other new characters in Sayuri's posse, unfortunately, are as forgettable as glasses of water. If they're not going to be distinct, why bother including them in the book at all? Why not just cut them out? Could've also done without the gratuitous Japanese all over the place (for the last time, bilingual and multi-lingual people don't spontaneously bleat words in their native language whilst speaking another!), but this has happened all throughout the series with poor Anastacia's random French exclamations, so what else was I expecting?
The problem in this series is that none of the characters feel like they could be real people. Why? It all boils down to the fact that character development moments were either too sudden or completely absent. There's a point where Saskia has a breakdown about her past to Lottie... that didn't feel earnt whatsoever. Why does she tell all to Lottie of all people? Why is Lottie the one to comfort her? Why not Anastacia, who has been there for her since even before Leviathan? Where is this sudden outpouring of emotion coming from in the first place???
They interact rarely and it never delves further than superficial small-talk, which is extremely frustrating when this approach is taken with all the characters and all the relationships in the book. If you wanted this to work, you needed Saskia and Lottie to have built a slow but steady friendship. For Saskia to slowly reveal snippets of her past before clamming up, shutting her out again. For them to hang out and strengthen their friendship. Only then can a true breakdown like this feel like it is earnt. That's how trust in the real world develops, after all.
There's another with Sayuri, also closed off and walled with her internal defences, and she suddenly spills all her deep secrets to Lottie in what is supposed to be a moment of weakness, but without the right set-up, it comes off instead as contrived.
Also mentioning Ellie and Jamie's problems throughout this book. There never seemed like there was a huge chasm between them until said chasm comes to head nearer the end. I think I could go on and on, but the gist is: if you don't flesh out your characters organically, they come off as plot devices and tools to achieve the plot goal, rather than representations of actual people.
Since I mention convenient, this book/ series really loves coincidences that help the protagonists. Just before her play airs, Lottie suddenly wants to participate on stage and, lo and behold, the main actress is sick at just the right time! How lucky, am I right?
How about Lottie and co. speculating that Leviathan are waiting for them to find the hidden Takeshin treasure for them, and then the very next chapter, we get a Leviathan POV who happily goes "we're waiting for Lottie and co. to find the hidden Takeshin treasure for us!". Like... come on.
Minor thing: I'm sad at Binah's reduced role in this one. She does play an important part to the plot, but her page time is so drastically reduced. What could have been expanded to several chapters of high stakes action puddled into an easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy mission that lasted four pages with zero conflict. I can't really describe it without getting into spoiler territory, but I felt no fear that Binah and co. wouldn't accomplish their goal because there was simply nothing to fear. Nothing stood in their way.
The writing is much better, but sometimes the book goes too ham with its similes and metaphors to the point where they feel out of place and break sentence flow. The filtering is, thankfully, heavily reduced in frequency since PRINCESS IN PRACTICE.
Finally, I'll conclude with the climax— sorry, anti-climax. Imagine you're a dastardly Joker-esque villain hellbent on capturing a princess for kudos points, and then you suddenly decide... just not to? They monologue and toy around with their victim, even though it has been established plenty of times that this character is absolutely nuts and will do anything for their master's approval. After the all the build-up, it ended up kind of feeling like "... that's it?". Like the villain didn't even try.
In the grand scheme of things, a lot of my complaints didn't detract from my overall experience, and this book was almost pure, delightful escapism, and a lot of fun to read. I particularly enjoyed the mystery and the change in setting in this one. Takeshin Gakuin was fun, and unravelling more of Lottie's ancestry was also exciting to dig through.
OVERALL? I actually enjoyed this less than my last read through, which is disappointing. I don't know, the characters and scenarios didn't click as well for me as they did last time. All the flaws seemed inflated. However, still an enjoyable book overall.
Check out my theory for PRINCESS AT HEART below!
Finished e-copy received from Penguin Random House Children's in an exchange for an honest review. This title released on the 5th September 2019.
The very first question that comes to mind upon reading this book is: Why the hell is is only 312 pages? Every book is thirty pages shorter than the one before. Now, I'm not asking for 916 pages or something, but sure, 400 or so is okay. This is soooooo short.
Anyway, it's good, very good, like the other two. There were a few elements missing that did occur in the first two books, but nothing too serious. The only things that bugged me more than it should have, was that 1) Lottie and Ellie don't have as much interaction in this book as they used to have and that 2) Jamie was still being a bit of an ass. And Lottie and Ellie's chemistry is one of the strong points of this series, so that's a bit of a shame.
The story is fast-paced, contains several good twists and mysteries and some nice character building. The setting was a surprise too; you don't get that many Western books that, after two books having been set in rural England, jump all the way to Japan. Nicely done!
There's another big reveal coming for you at the end of Book 3 - although I wouldn't call it a cliffhanger exactly, so that's nice. The fact that this isn't the last book came as a relief to me, because for some reason I thought this would be a trilogy and I absolutely wasn't ready to say goodbye to all these characters and the wonderful storytelling. Two more books are still coming, and the more, the merrier. Bring it on!
It's been a while since I've read the first two books in this series. I remember getting the third book as soon as it was released, but it has been rotting away on the shelf ever since. Today however I changed plans, once again, and all of a sudden decided to grab this one. And I'm not entirely sure why and I didn't really remember what to expect either. So, I just got started and hoped that it was the right book for the right mood.
And I have to admit that I'm starting to lose my interest a little and it's hard to pinpoint why. Normally these kind of books would totally be my thing, but for some reason this book didn't really hold my attention. I was counting down the pages until I reached the end and the only reason I didn't put it down, was because I wanted to finish it so I could start something I was more interested in. I just can't explain what caused that feeling.
It's partly because I can't really connect with the characters. I had the feeling that emotionally all those characters were running in circles in this book. The feelings and issues they had at the start of the book were still there at the end of the book. What I actually miss is some sort of character growth. And then I'm not talking about the girls trying to prove Jamie that they are strong and fast enough to take care of themselves. That's not character growth. It's stupidity.
The main plot-line also develops a little too slow for me. Don't get me wrong, if there had been a lot of character growth in this book I wouldn't have cared, but now I kind of did. It also doesn't help that the author makes it quite easy for the reader to guess what's going on. Normally I'd say that's a sign of a good build up, but since the characters literally needed half a book more to reach the same conclusion, it simply takes too long.
I will keep the series on the radar, but I don't think I'll pick up the next books.
I enjoyed the first two books so much so I was a bit disappointed with this, it just seemed to lack the magic of the first two, the writing is still great it’s just the story itself lacked a bit of direction and seemed to be just a filler. Still an entertaining read, just could have been better.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion
Where to start? I have a lot of thoughts and don't normally write semi-thorough reviews, especially on Goodreads, so I'm not sure how I want to structure this, but I'll start with this; this book put me in a 3-day reading slump because I didn't want to finish it, I wasn't enjoying that much. And I was also ready to give it 2 stars. so that's where I'm coming from writing this review and I think that's important information to know going in. So, gonna start with pacing, specifically her plot twists/ reveals. everything the plot builds up to is all revealed in the last 60 pages and I think that was a mistake, mainly because things not getting revealed quick enough is why I ended up not wanting to finish it. Some context: I read the first 200 pages of this during a readathon, then didn't finish it 'til 4-days later. The fact this took place in Japan annoyed me until I read those last 100 pages I had put off. It is very obvious if you go on Connie's Instagram for like, 0.2 seconds that she has an interest in Japanese culture, so the fact that this book randomly took place there, and that all these plot points about Ellie's Dad hating Japan because that's where her Uncle ran away too, Levithan's Homebase being Japan (how subtle Connie), the fact there is a Sister School that is never mentioned in the first 2 books. It was all building up and getting on my nerves because there was no explanation and you don't get any 'til page 260. So I thought she had made up all these plot points that have no reason to exist besides she was a weeb and wanted to write a book based there. Once the things were revealed, about the letter, who was the leader of Levithan who I guessed because it was super obvious and not-so-subtly hinted at, it didn't bother me as much.
What did though, was the Liliana plotline. It didn't need to exist besides to get Sayuri to trust Lottie, it didn't need to be there, just another thing to tie Japan into the series. And now that we're getting into the plot, besides the big reveal at the end of this, the plot was quite boring and felt like a re-run of the second book except it took place in Japan-just 'cause. Levithan targeting Lottie for a reason that's not explained, a mystery to do with the founder of Rosewood and a secret item Lottie and friends are in a race to find before Levithan. sounds like 'Princess in Practise' to me! the only difference is that it takes place in Japan and also the relationship dynamics since they leave things quite weird at the end of the second book. Also, why did the Twins go to Japan if they weren't going to be part of the story? Like I genuinely want to know, what was the point, they could have easily not gone and it would have made no difference...
Speaking of why the went to Japan (man, my segue are top-notch), it was to get Lottie's grades up since she failed the year. Yet not once during this 300-page book do you get shown her going to any classes besides 3 scenes where she's making costumes for the play. Let's go into another issue, for a book that takes place in Japan, it teaches you nothing about Japanese culture? I have left this book with the same knowledge of Japanese culture as I went in, which is next to nothing. you learn a bit about Kendo, what Kabuki is, and some stories that I don't know if they're real or not, and that's it. Like, Lottie was studying Japanese Theatre, she was making costumes for a Japanese Play and yet you are given no real information about Japanese theatre and I think that's a mistake. Also, Lottie really annoyed me in those scenes of working on the costumes because she came off as the 'ignorant foreigner' archetype. She was working along with people who were from the culture and kept wanting to add her tiara to the design, and they said no because it didn't make sense. Then, when she had to take over the role she's like "I'll do it, but I'm wearing the Tiara", I wanted to smack her so bad. No one was forcing her to do the role, she offered. Also! When did she learn the dance?!! so not only was it annoying, it made no sense!!
There are only 2 more things I really wanted to mention. So because I didn't enjoy the plot I paid more attention to the writing, and that didn't really help my cause. If you've read the book you know, while it is fun, it's not the most well-written thing in the world so I did struggle after the plot started to drag for me, and the writing is the big reason why I didn't want to pick it back up again. My other point ties into the witing and this is a semi-positive note! I did like Ellie's internal struggle, the fact she is privileged and feels guilty her friends are put in danger because of her is a real problem someone would have if they actually in this situation...however, I wish Connie conveyed it differently. I like the fact Ellie wanted to prove her self to Jaime, but her inner monologue... there are different ways of letting the reader know what's going on besides having the character say it in EVERY chapter they're, and that might be an exaggeration but that's how it felt reading it.
Overall the book is fine, and I am going to be continuing in the series but this is probably my least favorite and I'd say the weakest installment. Obviously, this is all my opinion so if you disagree I'm glad you either really enjoyed this/ hated 'Princess in Practise 'cause I'd say objectively the first book is the best, but this just wasn't it for me...

A thrilling continuation of the Rosewood Chronicles, developing the characters in ways that are beautifully impactful on plot, rather than just leaving them separate like in so many other series where the characters are the plot. In this, they are both connected and separate. Connected to each other in aspects and impacting the other. Nothing feels unnecessary or out of place and the setting and proper japanese language used make you feel wonderfully immersed in the world, taking in the new environment as Lottie and the others do.
I've now reread this book 7 times and I'm still realising new foreshadowing moments or things that are rewarded from previous books in the series. I love this series so much and my only wish is that we got to see more of Ellie, as it felt slightly as though she was a stand by in this book, she wasn't entirely plot relevant and I wish I got to see her struggle include more than "It's all my fault".
I was lucky enough to grab an early finished copy at YALC
*4.25 Stars*
I had been very impatiently waiting for this book to come out and I wasn't disappointed. But somehow, I had forgotten that this wasn't a trilogy and I was expecting it to be the end. It's not. And now I want book 4 more than anything.
In this third book, Ellie, Lottie and Jamie head to Japan, to Rosewood's sister summer school. And a lot happens.
I really liked this entire book. It might have been missing a little something extra and was a little predictable but I didn't mind. I enjoyed it immensely and flew through it. The change of scenery was very well done and I just love those characters so much. I also loved the new side characters. I seriously can't wait for the next book.
Lottie does everything within her power to keep Ellie alive and well. But the moment she gives the interview live and in front of a camera, she knows almost immediately that she made things even worse. And when she gets the information, that she will no longer be able to stay at Rosewood Hall, she is convinced that someone is doing everything to keep her from protecting Ellie. But there is one chance for her, to smooth things out. Takeshin Gakuin. The sister school in Japan.
OMG the action during some scenes, the wild motorcycle ride through Tokyo and the panic in one of the figures face and behavior after that ride – hilarious! I´ve seldom had so much fun reading such a scene as in this novel. Connie Glynn, you NAILED IT!
The story itself is one great read. And with the Asian setting, the plot gets even more exciting. But when Lottie starts to find clues, she knows from the diary she owns, the novel becomes a wonderful secretive touch. Once more Lottie proves that she is a smart brain and can see things others don´t. The author´s style is the same as in the others. Soft, sensitive and with a hint of humor. But this time, she´s combined it with quite some action, Asian flair and the unraveling of a long-kept secret.
Lottie is still the same girl. Not every plan is working the way she had planned. And not everything she says or does comes out the way she wants it. But there is still Jamie she can count on. Lottie is absolutely convinced that she needs to stay at the sister school in Tokyo for the summer. To get a second chance at Rosewood Hall and to keep Ellie as safe as possible. The only problem: Ellie does not want everybody around her in the need of protection only because of her. And Ellie is sick and tired of the fact, that she is the reason why everyone around her is so damn protective. Sooner or later that leads to a conflict with a very explosive background.
I am thrilled. This novel was fantastic. A great setting, wonderfully created figures and a thrilling plot combined with hilarious dialogues give you one heck of fantastic reading pleasure. And after that ending, I can´t wait to read the next one.
Where to start. This book series is amazing, they just keep getting better. I can't believe what happened in that book. I didn't see the plot twists coming from the Master of Leviathan being Claude wolfson to Haru becoming a teaching assistant at rosewood but needless to say I loved them. Connie Glynn is an amazing author, and I can't wait for the next book to come out.

Oh I love that!
A k tomu v Japonsku!! K čomu by som to prirovnala? Asi k Medzi nami dievčatami. Len natiahnuté a viac rozpísané. :) A všetky knihy majú fantastickú obálku!
The whole book felt a bit weird and forced. I was expecting a lot from an adventure in Japan but it didn’t deliver for me, the added characters were stiff and dull…Our main characters were wallowing even more than in the previous book and the actual storyline went interesting for me in the end of the book. 🙄 Lottie’s character was the only one from the trio who actually did something useful, with the help of the great Rosewood crew + Ollie, although she was a bad friend to everyone except Ellie and Jamie and not all that great friend to them either with all the secrecy… I hope the story gets better again in the next book….I wonder how many books there is going to be in the whole series?🤔
