Hidden Norfolk #5

Hear No Evil

Rate this book
When the bonds of brotherhood are strained, who do you turn to?

The celebration of the Viking Festival of Scira ensures that thousands descend annually on the small coastal town of Sheringham, but when one man dies amidst the grand finale, it falls to DI Tom Janssen and his team to identify who the victim was and how he met such a grisly end.

The victim was a local man, successful, hard working and well respected. A motive proves to be elusive. As the case progresses it becomes evident that not all is at it seems. Those within the victim's trusted circle appear unable, or unwilling, to aid the investigation. Someone has a grudge... one strong enough to willingly send a man to his death in the most brutal, and public, manner.

The answer must lie in the victim's past; a past that sees highly decorated military service. The past shapes our future and the consequences of our actions catch up with us. Those with the darkest secrets... with the most to hide... will face their day of reckoning.

Witnesses, friends and enemies alike all appear to employ the same old adage; see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil, but a ruthless killer is on the loose and they want revenge... Janssen and his team must unmask a murderer before they strike again...

Set within the mysterious beauty of coastal Norfolk, this fast-paced British detective novel is a dark murder mystery with moments of humour, one that will keep you guessing until the very end when the final shocking twist is revealed.

Hear No Evil is the fifth novel in a new series of thrillers from the million selling British crime writer, JM Dalgliesh, the author of the Dark Yorkshire books. Perfect for fans of LJ Ross, JD Kirk, Angela Marsons, Joy Ellis and Damien Boyd.

Jason Dalgliesh was born on the south coast of England and grew up in Hampshire, UK. He has worked in the power transmission industry, the retail sector, call centres and as a night-owl in a bakery. His greatest challenge of all is ongoing, as a stay at home parent.

He is presently writing the Dark Yorkshire crime-series, featuring DI Nathaniel Caslin.

The novels are set in Yorkshire, England. The medieval City of York is Caslin's home town and the plot lines take in some of the UK's most rugged and beautiful landscapes, from the windswept North Sea coastline and across the stunning North York Moors.

Penned in the style of the Crime Noir genre, Caslin is a deep character, as flawed as he is brilliant, battling his own demons as much as those he is pitted against. Readers who enjoy gritty, atmospheric thrillers will find the series a must read.

Having spent time abroad, Jason has lived and worked in various parts of England as well as the Scottish Highlands. He currently resides in the East Riding, with his wife and two young children.

Like all the Dalgliesh stories in his series, there is lots to figure out and tense danger to face. But the best part of these stories for me are the personal issues faced by the detectives. This one didn't have enough of that, so 4**** instead of 5.

The Scira Viking Festival is near its end when a burning body falls off the cliff. Then another man is killed from the same army troop. DI Tom Janssen and his team investigate.
An entertaining and well-written modern mystery. Another good addition to this enjoyable series.

A very different type of crime book, which I didn't solve until the end. Good work!

A chilling read

I was fascinated by this story and the characters, who were very diverse. The descriptions of the locality were interesting , allowing the imagination to flow. A very macabre and public murder began the investigation; but it was like a pebble dropped in a river and spreading outwards. A very convoluted journey before the puzzle was solved.

Suspense and intrigue

Another great book full of suspense until the end. Descriptions of places and characters always a joy conjuring up a vision of real life.

As much as I like the series, I do have a bit of mix feelings about this one. Did I enjoy it? I sort of did, the beginning was rather promissing, but I would say it is the second half, which did not fully meet my expectations. I find the former soldiers really annoying, although I get why they tried to hide it as much as possible. As for the final solution, I admit in this case I really did not see it coming, or the reason why it all happened. I was not sure how the old event is related to all that was happening in the book. And how important it would be.
Overall, I enjoyed the book for the most part, it is by no means my favourite, but I do not regret reading it. So if you like the series, I would say give it a try.

I have enjoyed Jason Dalgliesh Norfolk murder series and the relationship between Tom, Tamara and Eric with their respective partners. In this latest book there is very little added about these relationship. The personality of Cassie who first appeared in the previous book has not been developed.

I found the story predictable and in places boring. Thus I was disappointed with the book however I will read the next book in the series, not now but in the future. I hope that the next book amplifies the main characters especially Cassie and provides a good story line.

For people who have not read Dalgeish novels I would strongly recommend that you don't start with this book.

Not Dalglishs best effort this tale didn't quite pan out for me which is unlike this author. Some of the murders were too graphic for my taste others may enjoy them. This is the first Dalglish book I've considered cutting short. In all honesty it improves towards the end but there was a lot of tedium to get through before hand

When DI Tom Janssen along with many of the locals witnessed a person set alight then fall from a cliff during the Viking Festival everyone knew something dark was going on. When the body turns out to be of a returned solider, generally well liked everyone including the police are confused. But then another returned veteran is murdered – someone linked to the first victim’s military service and Tom along with his colleagues rush to try and figure out the truth behind the grisly murders.

I really feel like this series – the “Hidden Norfolk” series – is starting to hit its stride. The author has found a good balance between a layered and complex plot with interesting characters and enough of a small town feel to really lend atmosphere and a gripping murder mystery. While largely a police procedural style of mystery novel there is plenty of twists and turns in the plot, and I thoroughly enjoyed the way events unfolded to reveal layer upon layer.

While this is the fifth book, I definitely feel readers shouldn’t shy away from picking this up if it’s the first one they’ve tried. The plot itself is very well contained in the book and everything reaches a natural conclusion. While the members of Tom’s team are all well-established characters – as well as Tom’s private life with his girlfriend Alice and Alice’s young daughter Saffy – I didn’t get the feel of missing connections between the characters or like readers fresh to just this book would be left lost or unsure of what was going on. This would be an excellent summer read on the beach somewhere or a lovely way to spend a relaxed weekend.

With interesting characters and a deliciously layered plot with some interesting twists I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can strongly recommend both this book and the series it comes from.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

DI Tom Janssen is at the Viking festival, having some rare time with his partner and her daughter. They are having a great time until there is a commotion and Tom’s attention is drawn to what is occurring further up the hill. Next thing they know, there is a man on fire running at full speed past them and throwing himself off the nearby cliff. Of course, it is once again up to Tom and his team to investigate this grisly death and figure out what succession of events led to this strange death.

As always, the story has many twists and turns and we are led from one lead to another with our intrepid investigators attempting to figure out what has gone on. I love the location, I think I have mentioned previously that it reminds me of a gritty BBC crime drama (and I love those!) The story doesn’t let up from the very first page, and we as the readers are carried right along with it. I had my suspicions of who the murderer was, and I was partly right. The twists in the books in this series are so good, and it makes it so hard to guess what is going to happen next, or what the motive was etc. I find it so satisfying reading and watching it all play out as the pieces all finally start to come together. Another fabulous addition to this wonderful series.

No Nobility in This Band of Brothers

This group of Afghan vets shares little but frequent get-togethers at the pub. They don’t discuss their spoils of war. But what they brought home turns out to spell doom for one and all. Unfortunately family members are left to suffer.

That’s the basic synopsis. We get to know the vets and their diverse strengths and flaws. But we never get to know anything about the police who are investigating them. Tom Janssen is the lead detective. It’s easy to remember his name since many chapters begin with that name. Not Tom or DCI Janssen, but the whole name. We know he’s divorced and has a girlfriend with a child. That’s it. He’s tall. But what other features does he gave? What kind of man is he? I don’t know. About how old is he? Did he grow up in Norfolk? I don’t know. We aren’t told much about his compatriots either Cassie seems bright. But is she tall or short, a redhead or brunette, pretty or plain? I couldn’t tell you.

These factors leave me unsatisfied. I want to know what kind of car Tom Janssen drives, what kind of clothes he wears. All we know is that he hasn’t many clothes in his closet on the boat he lives in. What kind of boat? And why does he live on a boat?

The story starts with a big bang and after that goes flat in my opinion. It’s hard to pin down what it is exactly but it left me feeling unsatisfied.

A tale of what goes wrong among a troop of soldiers and no matter how tight your bonds are as secret pact is never a secret for long. This book opens with our DI taking a day off to go to the Viking Fair only for it to be interrupted by a man on fire falling off a cliff. Needless to say DI Janssen’s is back on the job and this vicious murder is swiftly followed by another. What do these 2 have in common………….? They were both part of the same troop when serving in Afghanistan and are we really sure that these are the first killings.

DI Janssen is almost alone in investigating these murders the other team members aren’t really at the forefront of this book and DCI Greaves is in fact on holiday for 2 weeks. There is a little of Tom’s home life in this book but as with all of this author’s books it is so minimal I don’t know why he bothers.

3 stars because I had the killer why before Janssen.

Nail biting!

A grisly start for DI Tom Janssen day off, not the sort of thing you expect to witness whilst watching celebrations of the Viking Festival of Scira acting out on Norfolk's beautiful coastal cliffs of Sheringham. Horror and shock playing out in front of hundreds of people only adds to more questions than answers!

Clever plotting and storyline just keeps adding more head scratching as you turn the pages. So many secrets being held by so many, but why? And who was the victim at the festival? No one seems to know him he certainly isn't local, the more the team dig the darker it becomes, the deep seated secrets always just out of reach!

Great storytelling, my only niggle is the marked police cars being referred to as liveried vehicles throughout the books, who doesn't always refer to them as marked police cars, seems a little off putting to me, never mind though its still an excellent read with a great casting of characters!

A troop of former soldiers are being targeted for death. Their deaths are personal and not pleasant or quick. Tom's team quickly finds the link, but can't find the motive. Clues pop up, but the result remains elusive until the fourth member is killed.

This series is mostly about the puzzles of the mysteries. There is a little bit of character development, but not a lot. Frequently, Tom's days with Alice and Sapphi are interrupted by his job.

I was taken in by the obvious choice, but became aware of the real perpetrator pretty quickly, though towards the end, once most of the clues had been revealed. The reason that the motive became important was slightly unclear to me. One thing I thought was sad was what happened to Harry. He was implicated, of course, but I thought he was trying to pull away from his fellow soldiers. Perhaps I am soft because he had two small children and he was equally as guilty as the others.

A little slow to start but then it hooked me!

Well written, although slow at the start, it slowly creeped up on me to hook me well and truly. I’ve now (at nearly 3am) had to finish it.
Didn’t really predict the ending till closer to the end which usually indicates how well it’s written. It kept the question bouncing around and definitely laid foundations to consider a few choices.

As there’s a fellow Geordie in it, I loved that the small but important additions were right, like when talking, even things like “mam”, also with the Scottish! This definitely adds to the genuine feeling of the book. I wasn’t sure on Cassie at first, but she’s defo recognisable as one of us 😂

I also enjoyed it being more of Tom leading rather than Tamara.
Another one of the series recommended 👏🏽

Hidden Norfolk Mystery #5 - Wrath Murders

Comrades of past wars develop strong bonds of friendship and support so who is killing this troop of men in such horrific fashion? The Detectives find these men but one are successful business men, pillars of the community on the surface, but digging deeper cracks in their public faces appear. Money is appearing at opportune moments for each when they need it. Detectives search for the truth and with surprising ending the killer is discovered. I have enjoyed all of J M Dalgliesh's mystery series. They are smart and lead the reader along the investigated trail. I always try to find the murderer before revealed and find myself stumped until the end. These make great readings for more realistic and darker murders of real life.

Another good story in this great series

This was another good story from IN Dalgliesh in the Inspector Tom Jansen series of books. This is my 5th one and have enjoyed them all. I enjoy the characters as in most defective book series they become a very close team.
The plot of this book starts with a man on fire taking over Sheringham Cliffs. When a 2nd man is found dead, this time shot, Tom discovers they both served in Afghanistan together. When it is discovered that a man who died in a fire 2 years previous was also in the same squad of.men. The culprit is finally caught but the ending comes as surprise.
If you like a good British Detective story this could be for you.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
This series of novels is more enjoyable when read in order, as the story builds.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I am familiar with the characters and location having read the first book in the series and this plot didn't disappoint and kept me guessing near to the end. Whilst part of a series, the book can be read as a standalone without constant reference to former investigations and character descriptions which so often take up story space. It was also great to read a book that had been successfully proof read, constant errors are so distracting. I am now off to download the three books I haven't read from this series and look forward to No 6. I can also recommend the Dark Yorkshire series by this author.

Book 5

Really enjoying this series it just gets strings as the series develops.
Lots of interesting characters in this book and twist and turns and playwright kept me turning the pages trying to figure out who had committed the crimes. I didn't figure of our at all which is always great to be surprised when all the obedience starts to call into place with a small break through.

Good descriptions of the murders and quiet gritty but written in the correct way to give information and share the intensity, passion or hatred involved.

Looking forward to book 6 and I hope more to follow in this series.

I will try his other series set in Yorkshire at some point.

Born to fail.

A group of former soldiers, who served together in Afghanistan are bonded by their joint experiences of courage and a less noble joint venture. All for one and one for all, until some have a rethink about their not so honourable actions.
The lives of their families are shattered as the bodies pile up.
So who is responsible for these very personal killings - the car dealer, the owner of the garden centre, the golf club owner or is the dropout with mental health issues the culprit?
The killer will come as a surprise, Tom solves the case at the very end of the book.

I wasn't enjoying this series as much as the DI Nate Caslin and was wondering why 🤔 after reading this one it finally came to me..... DCI Tamara Greave 🤦‍♀️
This flowed so much better and Tom is an excelkent detective on his own, for me the only decent thing Tamara Greave has done is bring in DS Cassie Knight what a brilliant character 🥳 she lightens Eric up and you can see him growing and she is a good sounding board for Tom without all the flirting and "damn Tom why is he already in a relationship, and it wouldn't be professional" drama from Tamara, so basically send her off somewhere else please, although probably too late now as you've put her in her own property now 🤦‍♀️

An unexpected treasure. I have read all of these, and Dagleish has improved with every book. You will doubtless enjoy reading all of them.

The repeated characters all have distinct personalities. The “hero” is Tom Jansen, a physically imposing, highly intelligent Detective Inspector. He is a thoughtful man, and not given to impulsive decisions or actions. We see a dedicated officer, who takes the law seriously and has a keen sense of justice. The other repeating characters are clearly drawn, perceptive and kind.

Great read

This book touched me as all Jason’s books do. It got me thinking how fragile life really is even though on the surface we know it. Reading the stories throughout this book on how different people are affected by war or violence on the home soil, makes you take stick at what is really important. For Tom Jannsen that is also the case. I couldn’t put this book down just as I cannot put anything Jason writes down. I cannot wait to start the next book which will be as soon as I have finished writing this. Thankyou Jason.

Enjoying this series of books. I originally come from King’s Lynn, Norfolk so know the area well and like the way it’s represented, along with the stories. Good to get to know the characters and see them develop. Pleased to see Book 7 will be available in April as sad to be getting to the end as only Book 6 to read now. Currently live in North Yorkshire so will start on the Yorkshire books soon.
Thank you for enjoyable books to keep me entertained during this difficult time. Have recommended to friends and family.

Book 5 of 16 by J.M. Dalglaish. Brutal murders focused on troop of former war buddies. During a celebration of a Vikings event, a man is set on fire and then pushed off a 100 foot cliff. No clue as to why. DI Janssen investigates. Another gruesome murder take place when another member of the troop is killed. Another compelling story in this awesome series. I assure you you won’t figure it out. The writing is skillful and the characters live up to their reputations. I’m off to Book 6 now.

Another very good "Hidden Norfolk" book. Interesting characters, some that you really don't like and some that are people that you would really like to meet. Excellent police procedures with ins and outs and a few red herrings. I think one of the things that I like best about these books is that the body is usually on the first couple of pages. Nothing I hate worse, in reading, is to have to read 100-150 page before something happens. Not so much personal stuff in this book as some of the others. Waiting for the next book to arrive.
