Amarrah came from nothing, had nothing… was nothing. The discovery of her secret talent changed that in an instant. But rather than a gift, what Mara uncovered was a curse—a deadly one.
Searching for a way out leads Mara to even more hidden truths; legacies beyond her wildest dreams. The real nature of her birthright is finally revealed, only to be cruelly snatched away in the rising tide of war. Cast adrift and deprived of everything she’d earned, Mara is once again left with nothing.
Toiling away in near obscurity, Amarrah works to regain what she’s lost, but her plans for redemption are met with a series of failures. She’d all but given up hope when an opportunity comes literally knocking at her door.
All Mara has to do is swallow her last bit of pride and agree to serve the very same enemy who took everything away from her.
Success turns out to mean far more than Mara imagined, while failure would result in certain death. Surrounded by enemies on all sides and trapped in the middle of a deadly conspiracy, Amarrah is forced to unravel yet another mystery and solve the final riddle of her legacy.
I liked Amarrah sense of family, even though she was not treated well until she became a teenager. I would not have been so gracious. I liked how she is willing to fight for things.
Amarrah is portrayed to be strong, extraordinarily clever and powerful. So clever that solutions come to her instantly. So instant, that I do not know how. We are told many things happen, but not how they happen. That is my biggest problem with this book.
I did not feel the romance. It was too instant for me. I think the book would have been better without it.
Good story and could’ve been a trilogy with everything going on. It kept my interest and the only reason it wasn’t 5 stars is because of the books length.
Due to the shortness of the book, some comprises had to be made with development and world building.
Really loved the characters, and if there is more to tell in this world I hope the next book is longer and more developed.
I really wanted to like this book. It has SO MUCH potential. There is far too much internal dialogue to keep me interested and not enough interaction between the characters to really develop meaningful and believable relationships (romantic and friendly). So much happened within the book that details were glossed over that could have made it amazing. The romance is non-existent...snail pace slow burn.
Amarrah learns the truth of her identity hours before her world crumbles. Tayson comes to her for aide in solving a problem. Together they find treachery. M. D. Baker creates the most marvelous fantasy. With each book I read I find myself lost inside the worlds created by him. So much so the I resent the intrusion of the outside world!
Overall, the plot and characters had me entertained. I felt like there was a lot in the book that could have been drawn out over 2 or 3 books to add more to world building and character relationships. I liked the magic system too.
