When the body of a homeless woman is found under Bradford’s railway arches, DS Nikki Parekh and her trusty partner DC Sajid Malik are on the case.

With little evidence, it’s impossible to make a breakthrough, and when Nikki receives a newspaper clipping taunting her about her lack of progress in catching the killer, she wonders if she has a personal link to the case.

When another seemingly unrelated body is discovered, Nikki receives another note. Someone is clearly trying to send her clues… but who?

And then a third body is found.

This time on Nikki’s old street, opposite the house she used to live in as a child. And there’s another message… underneath the victim’s body.

With nothing but the notes to connect the murders, Nikki must revisit the traumatic events of her childhood to work out her connection to the investigation.

But some memories are best left forgotten, and it’s going to take all Nikki’s inner strength to catch the killer…

Before they strike again.

The heart-stopping and totally addictive new crime thriller from Liz Mistry will keep you reading long into the night! Fans of Angela Marsons, Val McDermid and Rachel Abbott will love Dark Memories.

Born in Scotland, Made in Bradford sums up Liz Mistry’s life. Liz uses her experiences of living and working in the inner city to flavour her writing. Struggling with severe clinical depression and anxiety for a large number of years, Liz often includes mental health themes in her writing. Being a debut novelist in her fifties was something Liz had only dreamed of and she counts herself lucky, whilst pinching herself regularly to make sure it’s all real. The murder of a homeless woman in the city of Bradford, is just the first of three murders for DS Nikki Parekh and her partner DC Sajid Malik to investigate, and though there appear to be no links between the murders, Nikki will discover to her cost, that these deaths are close to home - personal to her, and it takes her back to a time in her life that was extremely traumatic, and one that she’s worked hard to forget.

When Nikki starts to receive newspaper clippings from an anonymous source, she realises that (although she doesn’t yet understand why), she is the link to each of these murders.

This is a dark and emotive story, lightened somewhat by the great working relationship and banter between Nikki and DC Malik. Behind the story though, is the very dark subject matter of child abuse, though thankfully we’re spared the graphic details.
Well written, with a compelling storyline, and a feisty protagonist, it kept me gripped throughout. I hadn’t read the previous books in the series, but nevertheless it read well as a stand-alone. Look forward to more from Liz Mistry.

I listened to the audiobook but it was just so confusing: so many characters, and some with one or even two aliases made listening difficult. The narrative skips about from one point of view to another without warning, which might work in hard copies, but not in audiobooks. I also didn't much like the narration because occasionally the emphasis in sentences was obviously wrong. All in all I was rather disappointed, although I liked the well-drawn main character.

Detective Nikki Parekh, Book 3
I started this series at book one and part way through knew it was going to be a series I would enjoy. I have read books 1-3 back to back and feel i've really gotten to know the characters. DS Nikki Parekh has something about her that you just cant help but like.

A new case for DS Nikki Parekh and her partner DC Sajid Malik. When bodies start to mount up Nikki realizes that someone is trying to send a message to her. Nikki is going to have to dig deep to get the strength to revisit her past.
I found this book just like the previous 2, gripping, thrilling and exciting. I look forward to catching up with the rest of this series.

I would like to thank Netgalley and HQ for an advance copy of Dark Memories, the third novel to feature DS Nikki Parekh of the Bradford Police.

The body of a homeless woman, Peggy Dyson, is found stabbed to death under the railway arches. Nikki knows her from her own childhood but even this familiarity is not enough to compensate for a lack of clues and motive, but she is puzzled when she receives a clipping about the murder and another about a murder in Cambridge. When a third body is found across the road from her childhood home Nikki begins to think it might be personal.

I thoroughly enjoyed Dark Memories which is a twisted tale of damaged childhood and revenge. It is a difficult novel to review as so much of the plot links together and cannot be discussed without spoilers. I do, however, think that it would be an excellent novel for book groups as it throws up so many talking points, not least the nature vs nurture debate.

The novel is mostly narrated from Nikki’s point of view with the unnamed killer and other unpleasant characters putting in an appearance occasionally to give their point of view and justifications for their actions. I’m not always a fan of reading the whining of bad people, but in this case it is well done and adds to mystery and intrigue as the killer is not revealing his motivation except in general terms and that turns out to be self deception.

As reflected in the title this is a dark novel and exposes the worst side of human nature. I found myself shuddering at some of the events and crying at others. I found myself putting the book down at times for some decompression, not necessarily from the harrowing scenes but from the tension of identifying with Nikki and all that she has to go through. In many respects the hunt for the killer takes second place to the excavation of her past and the present day repercussions of that excavation. This is a clever, deftly executed novel that handles trauma sympathetically without descending into the maudlin or triteness. I found it very impressive.

Nikki Parekh is a wonderful character. She doesn’t always get it right but she attacks everything she does with guts and a leap of faith. This novel explores what formed her and how she became the woman she is. She’s a triumph of character over circumstance and it’s heartwarming to read.

Dark Memories is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.

An enjoyable, fast paced police procedural that looks at the long term effects of childhood trauma. Without ever going into gory details Liz manages to convey the horror that stays with a child for the rest of their life after suffering from abuse at the hands of someone who ought to have been a loving protective presence. She explores why some people are resilient and determined to treat the next generation with love and respect while others are so badly damaged they can do nothing but repeat the cycle of abuse and harm.

There was a lot to like about this book and I would happily recommend it, however I found the formatting strange, this might just be because I read an ARC, but occasional the viewpoint would change from one person to another, even one place to another, in the middle of a paragraph without any indication it was about to happen. A couple of times I had to reread a few sentences to make certain I knew who was actually centre stage at any particular point.

While I found the style annoying the story itself was compelling enough for me to continue to read and enjoy right through to the end.

Another great book from Liz Mistry.
DS Nikki Parekh and DC Sajid Malik have their hands full with lots of murders in this gripping crime thriller.
This story is closer to home for Nikki who begins to suspect that a number of murders are connected when she starts receiving newspaper clippings in the post after the first two deaths.
When the third murder happens on the street she grew up on, she realises they all link to the past.
We find out about Nikki's childhood in this book and it’s difficult to read at times.
I love the relationship between Nikki and Saj and their banter made me smile.
This is a gripping crime thriller that I really enjoyed.
Thanks to HQ Digital and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

Dark Memories is not my first read by Liz Mistry and I’m happy to have the chance to read another by her. I love her writing style! Dark Memories kept me on the edge of my seat from page one.

This book is dark. You can feel the tension as you read through. The characters are excellent. Nikki is very vulnerable, and learning about her childhood made her a much more rounded character.

This was definitely an emotional rollercoaster that I enjoyed very much. Don’t miss this one.

The third outing for DS Nikki Parekh and its quality is as high as the first two as she battles a tough case with her team as well as putting her much loved family second, however when newspaper clippings and diary entries appear in her case, both work and family are about to merge. Despite a very tough subject matter, it's handled very well with the characters as strong as before and the bad ones particularly loathsome. It's twisty, exciting and heart breaking as the story weaves well together with plenty of surprises along the way. Definitely recommended but read the first two first!

Dark Memories is the third in a series by accomplished crime writer Liz Mistry featuring DS Nikita Parekh (Nikki). Having read the first two books I jumped at the opportunity to read this one.

In this latest instalment, The body of a homeless woman, Peggy Dyson, is found stabbed to death under the railway arches. Nikki and her work partner, DC Sajid Malik are immediately on the case and Nikki remembers Peggy from her childhood; she was a friend of her mum, Lalita. Nikki is perturbed by the lack of clues and motive for Peggy's murder and is ill at ease when she receives a newspaper cutting and photo about the murder and another one about the murder of Liam Flynn, a university researcher, near Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. When a third body is found across the road from her childhood home Nikki thinks it might be personal.

The author's pacing was spot on, there was always plenty going on and there was certainly never a dull moment. Liz Mistry clearly knows how to write a story that is compelling, entertaining and all-consuming, with characters that are perfectly drawn. I have really taken a liking to Nikki who is stoic, bold, vulnerable and flawed, yet always real. Nikki's partner-in-crime, DC Sajid Malik, has also left an impression on me; he is caring, straight-talking and protective. I really appreciated the amicability and banter between Nikki and Sajid. All of the characters had a great part to play, whether or not they were likeable. Although Nikki was the main protagonist, I loved that some of the chapters were written from the unnamed killer's perspective, thus allowing for the odd glimpse into an ever-darkening mind.

Liz Mistry delivered an exuberant story of drama in this clever police procedural - a toxic concoction of a damaged childhood, revenge, and evil. Taut and compelling, it was a cracking story and a book that I revelled in all the way through. It brought no disappointments and the clever plotting enabled me to fully grasp the situation and motivations of the protagonists. The masterful twists paved the way for an enthralling denouement. I can't wait to see what is in store for DS Nikki Parekh next and I am delighted to recommend Dark Memories.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel from HQ Digital via NetGalley at my request and this review is my own unbiased opinion.

I started to read this and was enjoying it and then realised there was a lot of back story, so went and bought the first 2 in the series and read those. I was very glad I did - this book would probably have stood on its own, but it was much richer with all the background.
A very satisfying series - well written and with well-drawn, sympathetic characters. I thought the plot in this one was a tad over-complicated, but the denouement was believable.

I have been a fan of Liz’s work for a little while now. I have read and thoroughly enjoyed each and every book that she has released to date. ‘Dark Memories’ is Liz’s latest release and it is the third book in the bestselling series featuring Detective Sergeant Nikki Parekh. ‘Dark Memories’ is another corker of a read, which I thoroughly enjoyed but more about that in a bit.
I love the character of Nikki Parekh and I have started to think of her as a friend. Nikki is a dedicated police officer with many years of experience behind her. She has been known to bend the rules slightly during the course of an investigation but she does so with the best of intentions. Nikki is well thought of at work and she shares an especially close relationship with her work partner DC Sajid Malik. They are friends as well as colleagues. As well as being a dedicated police officer, she is also a wife and a mother. Often her work intrudes into her personal life and vice versa. Nikki occasionally feels as though she is being pulled in opposite directions. Nikki has a bit of a strained relationship with her mother at times. This latest case brings Nikki’s work and home life crashing together. What happens? Well for the answer to that question and so much more you are just going to have to read the book for yourselves to find out.
It took me no time at all to get into this story. In fact the synopsis was enough to grab my attention and as soon as I started to read, well that was it- nothing else was getting done until I had finished reading this amazing book. That’s exactly what happened too. I became so wrapped up in the story that I managed to shut out all other distractions and focus solely on the book itself. I couldn’t turn the pages quick enough. At one point, the pages were turning that quickly that it was almost as if they were turning themselves. I think part of my addiction to the story was the fact that I liked Nikki’s character so much that I had to keep reading to find out what happened to her and if she managed to solve the case. All too quickly I reached the end of the story and I had to bid farewell to Nikki and her team.
‘Dark Memories’ is brilliantly written but then I have thought that to be true of all of Liz’s books to date. She certainly knows how to grab your attention from the start and draws you into the story. For me, the story started with a bang and maintained a fast pace throughout. Reading ‘Dark Memories’ felt like being on one hell of a scary and unpredictable rollercoaster ride with many twists and turns along the way. Just when you thought that you could take a minute to catch your breath, reclaim your stomach and gather your thoughts then off the action would go again. I felt as though I was part of this story and that’s all thanks to Liz’s very vivid and very realistic storytelling.
In short, I absolutely loved reading ‘Dark Memories’ and I would definitely recommend this book to other readers. For me, the series featuring DS Nikki Parekh goes from strength to strength. I look forward to reading much more of Liz’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

This is the third book in the series & could easily be read on its own. I found it to be a very well written book but a light read it isn’t & it took me a few days to read it as I needed to walk away from it at times but was compelled to go back & finish it. This book also explores Nikki’s childhood & we learn about what made her the woman she is today & my admiration for her grew in leaps & bounds. A gritty powerful read

Dark Memories is the third book in the DS Nikita Parekh series, here is a story of murder, child abuse, cruelty and severe domestic abuse.
Much more is learnt of Nikki, her sister and mother and the sheer awfulness of their past, due to their horrific childhood it gives more insight into Nikki’s character which makes you admire her so much more.
A homeless woman is found murdered in Bradford, followed by another two murders, all are some how linked and with Nikki receiving anonymous letters and diary entries she has to work hard to find who the culprit is and how she and her family fit into all this.
Although sidelined during the investigation due to her personal links that doesn’t stop her from pulling out all the stops, with the help of her police partner Sajid she starts realising who is at the heart of this.
At times I did find the book a little confusing, it seemed to jump from Nikki’s storyline to the murderer then someone else rather quickly so at times I wasn’t sure which characters part i was reading, when the killer was revealed I had to go back to work it out who he/she actually was.
That said an enjoyable read but not quite my favourite of this series.
My thanks to net galley and publisher for the opportunity to review this book honestly.

TW: sexual abuse, child abuse

This is the third book in the DS Nikki Pareks series, and the second one that I've read. I enjoy the main characters, Nikki and Sajid, and this was a fast-moving police procedural. Readers should be aware that the content of this book deals with child sex abuse and domestic violence. It is not graphic. This was a well-plotted mystery, but I could have done without the chapters from the killer's POV; they were kind of weird and not well-written in my opinion.

Overall, 3 stars because I liked the story and like the characters. I enjoy British procedurals, and I appreciate the diversity Mistry brings to her characters.

This series is getting better and better. I love how the author is allowing Nikita to grow. In this story we learn more about her tragic back-story. The mystery has it all child abuse and murder and multiple suspects. And it all ties back to Nikita's past forcing her and her family to address some family secrets.

Dark Memories is the third in Liz Mistry's DS Nikki Parekh series, and the title is perfect.
This is a book about memory; about a past that has haunted Nikki Parekh and her family for decades. In her afterword, Mistry says that she had wanted to write this book since starting the series, but waiting until the third book was a genius decision. I haven't read the previous entries, but when I picked this up, I felt right at home. There is a rich cast of supporting characters, all with their own history - hinted at but not spoiled for those of us who haven't read those stories - and Parekh is a complex, layered character. By penning two books before this, Mistry has been able to craft a world that she knows intimately, with players that she - and the reader - really care about; including readers that are new to the series and have no prior emotional investment. That's a remarkable achievement.

The story starts with the discovery of a homeless person in Bradford, the Yorkshire town that Mistry sets all of her books in. The case is seemingly routine and progress frustratingly slow, until a newspaper clipping sent to Nikki Parekh makes her wonder if she has a personal connection to the case. A second murder appears unrelated - except for the arrival of another note. By the time the third body is discovered, her link to the murders becomes undeniable - this one is in the house across the street from where she spent her traumatic childhood.
Mistry's treatment of Parekh is brutal and uncompromising in this book, and she deals sensitively with some very upsetting issues. But there are also glimmers of light. Parekh's love for her family is at the centre of the novel, and at work, the unflinching loyalty of her partner DC Sajid Malik and their easy banter counterbalance the darkness.

I really enjoyed this, and it is definitely a #RecommendedRead.

If you thought the others were good, this is the best yet! This book delves deep into the lives and the past of Nikki and her family and as the title tells you it’s full of dark memories. It gives you more an insight into her life and what shaped her.

Nikki is one ballsy lady and even her past experiences don’t stop her from doing what she does best and that’s catching criminals.

I really felt for Nikki and her family, I don’t know how people recover from that sort of trauma (without saying too much) and remain level headed. I’d want to kill them myself!

All the characters in the book are likeable, Saj with his endless supply of linen handkerchiefs made me laugh, and Archie is a good boss too. All the team work well together.

The book continues at a cracking pace, and I was a bit shocked at the end. I hope Liz will continue with Nikki (think she’s my favourite now - Gus is second!) and we can see what happens to her and the family in the future. Please bring her back.

My thanks to Liz, the publishers and Netgalley for the ARC.

It's hard to write a review for this series without using the word 'gritty'. Set in Bradford, the issues the city faces, like many other post-industrial places, make a rich background. Poverty, social unrest, homelessness, drug abuse, racism, domestic violence, child abuse and homophobia could make these novels depressing reading.

Instead, this third book in the series about a woman detective focuses on typical police work of the region and especially serial killers or murders. Each character is fully developed so that when reading a chapter it is obvious whose perspective it is by the unique voice. None of this flicking back to the title to find out whose point of view it is. The detective has her own life with her partner, children, mother and sister, all typically human with their own past and hurdles. The story is fast and the people are realistic.

There is no glamour in this book but neither is it sensationalist or exploitative. Despite the hardships of those involved, this is a story about love, loyalty, courage and resolve above anything else. What Dickens does for London, Liz Mistry does for Bradford. Only with a bit more grit.

Recommended read for those who like tense crime thrillers.

The third in the Bradford based series featuring DS Nikki Parekh and DC Sajid Malik is the best yet.

Parekh faces immense personal and professional challenges as she investigates several murders around Bradford, including a homeless woman she recognises from her childhood. She is sent an anonymous clue linking a killing in Cambridge, which appears to be the work of the same killer. But what is the connection?

Nikki and her family are put in peril as links to a past paedophile ring emerge - with one of the key players a figure from her own past. The Parekh family are forced to delve deep into terrible memories before the case comes to dramatic conclusion.

Dark Memories is not an easy read - definitely not one for the faint hearted. Nikita Parekh is a fine protagonist: shaped by her past, fighting for her family and struggling to keep it all together under extreme stress. The novel's fast paced narrative works across both past and present as the story arc leads inevitably to the final confrontation. It is both gripping and compelling from page one.

4 Stars from me

Although this is clearly an established series, Dark Memories is my first foray into the world of DS Nikki Parekh and her evidently traumatic past. I don't feel that not having read the previous books hindered my enjoyment, although it no doubt strengthens the readers connections to the characters.

Having survived an abusive childhood, Liz Mistry's main character DS Nikki Parekh takes no grief from anyone and is stubborn and determined (a little to her detriment but I can understand why!) almost to the point of being pig-headed...

Somehow she has retained strong family bonds and these are tested to the limit during Dark Memories as the past seems to be at the centre of the current case.

DC Sajid Malik is a great character, he has a softer edge to Nikki's hardness and they make a good team.

This book in well plotted with a slow initial build but then it moves at a solid pace with the tension ramping up throughout.

As a child DS Nikki Parekh and her family had been terrorised by Freddie Downey - their father and an abusive partner to their mother. Years later they all suffer but Downey has been jailed and then settled miles away, Nikki knows because she has him monitored. Now people are being murdered, people connected with that previous life, and someone is sending Nikki excerpts from a diary of abuse. The one incongruity is that one of the victims is a research student from Cambridge, not linked to the past at all, but there must be a link.
I hadn't read the previous books in the series so found it difficult to deal with the references to previous cases etc. However this is a gripping thriller. Obviously the Bradford setting had me from the start but, despite the very dark theme matter, this is well-plotted and exciting police procedural

Another stallion from the Mistry stable

DS Nikki Parekh is back with her extended family and colleagues and we finally get to understand exactly what went on to create such loyalty and fire in her. As usual the plot is sprinkled with intrigue, courage and set against the beautifully described backdrop of Bradford. Facing her worst fears, she is sidelined in the most important case of her life with the greatest danger to her family. Another real page turner, I was disappointed I’d come to the end , although I did feel a little let down by the summarily casual conclusion of one storyline and am hoping that it was necessary for the next book. Enjoyed reading it and reacquainting myself with the family and now off for the next book!

This is undoubtedly a gritty series where D.S. Nikki Parekh and her team focus on catching villains intent on unrest, murder, drugs, trafficking etc.

A body discovered under a bridge, where the homeless try to survive, triggers a series of seemingly unrelated murders and Nikki's past appears to be at the root.

The writing style is excellent (with only a few grammatical errors). Though a good-sized read, it flies across the pages until sleep is forgotten. The setting is described very well, although, it does paint a depressing picture of life in Bradford. While each of the characters is well-defined and believable.

Overall, I was fully engaged in this instalment of this crime thriller series and would recommend it to all who enjoy this genre.

Liz Mistry does it again!

I could not put this down. I love the pace of dark memories and it was a real rollercoaster of emotions, I've laughed, I've cried, I've raged. As with her previous DS Perekh novels Liz Mistry manages to take a really difficult topic and shine a light on it in a way that is touching, thrilling and sensitive. The fast pace keeps you interested and second guessing right to the last page. The way she writes her characters makes you feel like they are your friends or neighbours and she transports you straight into the centre of not only the action but the community.

I don’t often give a book 5 stars but I read all 3 DS Parehk books within the space of a week and this one drew me right in. I know Bradford reasonably well as I only live about 10 miles away and am familiar with BRI. This book had me on tenterhooks, it was fast paced with twists and turns all over and towards the end I simply couldn’t put it down, I just had to keep reading as I just had to find out what was going to happen next. I suspect there is an opening for a follow up so won’t be surprised when book 4 comes out. Brilliant read grabbed me from the word go

Liz Mistry is a new writer to me, her lead character Nikki Parekh is a gritty Bradford police detective.

A series of murders of homeless people leads Nikki closer and closer to her own difficult upbringing and leaves her asking questions of her mother and needy younger sister. This moves at pace, is full of surprises without feeling contrived and builds to a great climax.

If there is a genre called Northern Noir, this might be it. I loved it.

Fabulous

Wow I enjoyed books 1&2 but this one I really couldn't put down! Fantastic story really intense I couldn't read fast enough. Nikki's painful past caught up with her and her family with a devastating outcome and we got to learn about her childhood with her abusive father. I did find the end a little confusing which is my only little niggle but 5* plus for me, thank you Liz. BP Sheffield
