Blood is a necessity, but love is a luxury they can’t afford...

Vampire enforcer Victor Schmidt doesn’t have time for distraction. His enhanced senses can track human blood in or out of a body, but it doesn’t usually smell like oranges, honey, and temptation. And it’s not usually coursing through the veins of a beautiful back-alley rentboy. That should make it easier, right? Pay, bite and be on his way.

While prostitution isn’t Laurie’s dream job, someone has to take care of his sister and her kids. But being a blood donor to a tall, dark and brooding vamp isn’t part of his career plan. Until he agrees…and it’s far more pleasurable than he could have imagined.

Nurturing isn't in Victor’s wheelhouse, yet he finds himself tucking the all-too-tempting boy into bed. And feeling things he shouldn’t be. When Laurie's attacked, it's almost a relief: breaking necks is way more Victor’s style and he’s all-too-happy to kill. But Laurie being kidnapped wasn't part of anyone’s plan.

Now Victor's determined to save Laurie at any cost. Can he bring them both out alive, or will they die before they’ve even shared their first kiss?

This book is set in the world of the Mismatched Mates series, but it stands alone. However, look for cameos of your favorite characters from the other books in the series.

The only thing I really disliked about this story was that I thought I was going to get a little more vampire intel. And what I mean by that is I wanted a look into how the vampires really ran things and just a better view on the town in general. Other than that I was pretty happy. I liked Victor's whole persona that was built up and Laurie is just completely precious. It totally fit the vibe of all the other books and it had its sweet moments :D. I hope to get another glimpse of them again in the future but I’m not sure if I will.

Short book = short review.
This is a novella in the same world as the series but they don't crossover. It is more vamp-centric instead of were-centric.

Way to kink-shame, Boomer.

A cute short story about a poor kid who ends up selling himself on the streets and his unlikely vampire protector. Both characters were really likable and I hope they show up later in the main series.

I very much enjoyed this little freebie from Prolific Works by new-to-me author, Eliot Grayson.

I read a lot of paranormal romances, and I often struggle with novellas, so I was surprised at how much I enjoyed First Blood. I also jumped into the series at this one (can totally be read as a stand-alone), so it was even more impressive that I was able to follow along. I immediately added the first few books in the series to my TBR list.

A great little treat, First Blood is a very worthwhile read.

Starting the year with a surprise like this, a good one at that, is really good!

I haven't found much books in the MM world about vampires, wich is weird because they have been a thing foreve, so when my dearest Eliot Grayson gave us this, I went for it. And oh how good it was! I think this approach is better than the alpha's books, it was really well paced, explained and the way the character of Victor was done, the way his narrative was done was priceless!!! I loved being in his head with his attitude and his self criticism it was so funny! Short but funny.

I would love to see more of this part of the universe, loved it! Also this is free on this lovely page and there are a lot of other works who are worth the reading.

Fabulous paranormal novella from Eliot

I didn't realise, when I saw this one in the Winter Wonderland giveaway, that it was linked to the Mismatched Mates series.

If I had, I'd have read it sooner as I really like that series.

As it was, I've just read it and it was fab. Funny, sweet, action packed and pretty steamy.

It also gets a lot of story into a relatively short book.

Loved Victor's big broody grump of a vampire and Laurie's determined and brave nature, even while he was having to do things he didn't like.

The suspense element was a tad left field but it worked enough for me. There are evil people in this world so why not the paranormal one too!

I had to taste him or I was going to vibrate out of my skin.

Scary vampire enforcer falls hard for a sweet but troubled human.

Why have I never read this before? I really missed out not reading these vampire novellas.

I was comfortable.” “Me too.” Not at all. It was one of the most uncomfortable experiences of my life, crammed onto a narrow bed with a raging hard-on for hours, staying completely still so he didn’t wake up and end the torment.

Victor was such a fluffy marshmallow on the inside, always caring for Laurie, protecting him.

“I thought I had a great hiding spot. I was really fucking proud of it.” “Victor.” He sighed, and then he… the little fucker patted me on the arm. Me. He… patted me, comfortingly.

“You know, it’s kind of hard to miss a six-foot-something vampire with ridiculous shoulders in a leather trench coat stomping around in an alley and climbing rattly ladders and cursing whenever snow falls off the roof onto his head.”

THAT. The cutest fucking thing ever. Big bad vamp thought he was sooo hidden and ‘he can’t see me!’. Honestly, the most adorable stalking I’ve ever seen.

This was just a super fun vampy novella, with a bit of hurt/comfort, some thrills and action, sexy smut, and a lovely romance.

He felt like heaven.

I was just talking to a Goodreads friend about how hard it is to find good books with vampires in them. Then along comes First Blood to give me a vampire story that offered plenty of what I'm usually looking for in PNR.

There's Laurie, a rent boy with luscious lips and enticing blood, who also has attitude - a must in this world - and is working the mean, cold streets of Lancaster. He has the best of intentions but you have to wait for his reasons for sticking with it. Then there's Victor, a vampire enforcer who won't fuck where he bites because he doesn't want any attachment/connection. Yeah. Right. Sorry, Victor, we all knew that last one wouldn't work. You were a goner from the start. He pays for blood on a weekly basis from Laurie, it gives Laurie money and also makes Victor feel like it's a transaction. Mm hmm.... It does make for a terrific match as Victor protectively watches over Laurie.

This slides into the framework of the Mismatched Mates world - told from one POV, Victor's. However, the epilogue is Laurie's. I liked that. There are cameos - hi, Fenwick and Dor. Mentions - waves to Nate, but it stands completely alone.

Fun reading. A little bit of sexy, not too much, a lot of romance, some snark, feelings were engaged, some action and gore were good, I liked that. A lot. Good world building. Different little takes on vampire. And there's a vampire in a duster, a love of mine, I kept thinking Dmitri Belikov, although technically Dmitri is a dhampir.

I read this in one sitting and enjoyed every moment of it.

Victor has had the most fun & compelling POV in this series by far and it’s an absolute shame that him and Laurie didn’t get a full book, and I’m definitely not bitter about it, no, you shut up

This is my favourite so far. I really liked vampire enforcer Victor and his long coats. And Laurie was the rent boy with a heart of gold. Although he’s no pushover.

A cute short little read.

I loved this to pieces!! Victor - vampire enforcer who is not at all subtle or sneaky stalking beautiful rent-boy Laurie because his blood smells like oranges and honey. Laurie keeps him at arms length because he’s convinced Victor will get bored of him and he doesn’t want to get attached. Victor doesn’t want to be a creep so he *tries* to stay away - but then Laurie disappears!

Action, spice, and banter - exactly what I expect from Eliot Grayson. I only wish it had been longer ❤️

Vampire novella set in the Mismatched Mates world, but can be read as a standalone.

This was good! I got my fix of Eliot Grayson sarcasm, but the characters actually felt different from her other MCs.

We have:

- A vampire enforcer who falls into instalove with a prostitute.
-There’s a meet-cute that isn’t cute…it’s more murdery.
-Heart of gold prostitute is reluctant.
-They don’t communicate well.
-Vampire in instalove is stalkery and pays for the prostitue’s blood.
-Drama occurs!
-It all ends well.

I was into it.

Tropes: hurt/comfort, instalove, paranormal, prostitute/vampire
Feels: 3/5
Steam*: 2/5
Kinks: blood kink
Angst: medium
HEA: yes
Pairing: MM
Triggers/potential icks/content warnings: prostitution, abuse, violence, Gore, murder, implied sexual assault, poverty

Laurie is 22 years old, a human, and living in squalor. He's working as a prostitute because his sister is also poor and has two children to provide for and he's trying to help.

Victor is about 200 years old and he's a vampire and works as an enforcer. He's always tried to separate his sex life from his feeding. He comes across Laurie on the street one night and catches a whiff of him and he falls in love basically with the scent of his blood. He watches over Laurie in secret. He feeds from him once and then he wants more but it's not just bloodlust. He wants an excuse to throw money at him to try to help him. They come to an arrangement to meet once a week for a feeding, but Laurie wants to keep working as a prostitute and he doesn't want Victor to interfere. Victor won't give in to his lust and turn the relationship sexual though, he's holding on to that line at least. Victor secretly follows Laurie as he works on the streets and he ends up having to rescue Laurie from supernatural creatures on two separate occasions where they're trying to abduct him.

I have complicated feelings about this book. It's a novella and on one hand I was very impressed with the amount of plot and characterization that the author was able to squeeze in to a book of this length. And I also liked how unselfish Victor was and how he wasn't toxic and jealous. I don't like to judge novellas very harshly because I think that it's hard to do a novella well. But there were a bunch of things that made the romance not to my personal taste but also objectively not so good of a LOVE story. I have to rate it according to my enjoyment and how well I thought the love story was told. If I was just judging this book based on plot and not how successful it was as a romance, I would give it five stars for the plot that it managed to squeeze into a novella.

Things I didn't like:
- Laurie was actively having sex with his customers up until the 78% mark. He doesn't enjoy his job, and he's living in squalor and at risk the entire time. And Victor is watching all of this and while he's not a toxic or jealous character, it kills him and hurts his heart and drives him crazy to watch Laurie, but he also wants to protect him so he keeps guard. This is a heartbreaking premise. It's hard for a story like this which is so sad to be romantic.
- I didn't feel like Laurie loved Victor for himself until after the 90% mark. The big moment at 88% where they decide to be in a relationship, was so one-sided. I don't feel like Laurie really knows Victor. I don't feel like this is love on his side yet. There's definitely gratitude, he's really thankful for the rescue and the safety but it's not very personal. Victor is pouring his heart out and giving everything and Laurie is just grasping with gratitude onto a hot guy that can solve all his problems and is kind to him.
- It was insta love on Victor's side. Laurie's blood made him fall for Laurie. And I just am not a huge fan of insta love.

A notable moment:

"“I’m a killer. I’m not ashamed of it and I don’t usually care that much. But that doesn’t mean…” I still hadn’t answered his question. We both knew it, even though he’d misquoted me. “There’s you and there’s everyone else,” I finally said. “That’s all there is to it. You can say anything you want to me. You won’t make me angry. There’s no other shoe. I don’t know what else to tell you.”"

*FYI about steam: I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink.

**Note about spoilers: I like to comment on the plot of a book in reviews, so I almost always mark my reviews as containing spoilers. But I try to avoid spoiling the big dramatic moments! As a reader, I personally like to know what I'm getting into before I read a book so I know more about the content and if it's to my taste/mood, so I try to give that information in my reviews for myself when I'm considering rereading and also for other readers.

AVISO: Las reseñas de esta saga serán demasiado breves porque no hay mucho que decir de ellas salvo que sirven para evadirte y basta, bueno y que le coges un poco de cariño a los personajes. (No estoy segura de recomendarlas, la verdad).

“You think no human can touch you. You kill anyone you want, take whatever you want”.

Hasta la fecha, el mejor que he leído de esta saga y lo más triste es que es un relato. En serio, no me parece nada justo esto.

This was really good and I'm surprised I liked it as much as I did. I usually do not like rent boy stories. And, well, I didn't necessarily like that part of this story but as a whole it all worked.

I'd love to get more vamp stories in this world. We need more vamp stories period.

I loved this but I'm a sucker (sorry) for vampire books and the grumpy/sunshine trope.
It isn't necessary to have read the other Mismatched Mates books but it was fun to see characters from them in this novella.
Victor works against his instincts the whole time and works to give Laurie choices at all times. I loved the glimpse of Laurie's feelings in his pov at the end

“It’s not anything you use. It’s not external. It’s you. I could smell you from a couple of blocks away, the first night we met.”
Laurie wrinkled his nose. “Eww. I’d think the Irish Spring would be good enough to prevent that, anyway. No, I’m joking,” he continued, as I opened my mouth to argue some more. “I understand what you mean. It’s just hard to take ‘I could smell you from a couple of blocks away’ as a compliment.”

I’m so glad that we get to know more about the vampire world in this series. Though I wish we get a full book in the future since for me it’s a little bit complicated to connect with new couples in a short story. Regardless, I loved the couple Victor and Laurie made and I hope we’d see them in the future. Also, all the cameos of the characters we already know were on point. I’ve got to say that for being a short story with characters we’ve never seen before (that I remember) the plot felt well executed and it was very engaging.

MM Romance
Vampire Obsessed With Human
Book 4 of 7 (can be read as a stand-alone)
Novella
3 stars ⭐️

I liked this one but not as much as the other books in this series. This one can be read as a stand-alone because while it mentions other characters from the past books, there is no overlap in story line. I liked the mentions of Nate and learning more about the vampire side of this world.

This was about Victor, the vampire enforcer, falling for and obsessing over human Laurie. Victor smells his blood one night from a few blocks over, meets him, tastes him and can’t stay away. The entire book is in his POV except for the epilogue when we finally get Laurie’s. Victor has a dry sense of humor and his outlook on himself and life made me laugh out loud at times. I loved how possessive of Laurie he got despite trying so hard not to.

This is a super slow burn but since it was a novella I could overlook the not kissing until 75% thing although there’s lots of vampire licks and bites before then. Victor was so obsessed with Laurie that it made up for the lack of steamy scenes but this book just didn’t hold my attention like other books in this series.

First Blood
By Eliot Grayson

This was a bit darker than the other books in this series that I've read. There was no snarky personalities to lighten it either.

I liked both Victor and Laurie. Victor was a strong protective character. Laurie was strong too, but he also needed someone to love him and for someone to protect him.

I really enjoyed this novella, and especially Victor! He's just so adorable.

This book has a great level of casual dry humor, done through the narration, rather than conversation/banter/etc that frequently goes wrong. It reminded me a bit of Maz Maddox's writing style as well, the off the cuff situational humor.

Laurie was a good balance to Victor too I think. I liked seeing his POV at the very end, it fit with how I'd been seeing the character the whole time. aka Laurie was well done through just Victor's POV.

Overall, one of my favorites in the series.
