Sometimes in our life when everything is going smooth, a particular incident can bring it upside down. And then it becomes difficult to rise like a phoenix from burning ashes especially if one is from a reputed service. Similar fate is experienced by Major Alok Kumar Goel who loses everything in a mishap and then try to rebuild himself.
Codename Specter revolves around the Major and his relentless efforts to resurrect himself. Also he is aided by a reporter Anwar Ali who has a similar journey to him. Both looking for redemption and retribution tries to safeguard humanity from the clutches of evil forces.
The book is really a fast paced read infact more swift than is required. The rapid turn of events sometimes makes the readers lose the connect. The narration is impactful and choice of words deserve applause. There are instances where some incidents seem highly unbelievable but all in all a decent one time read esp if you love thrillers.
Do the thrills and suspense of a good book induce a similar thrilling music in your mind? It does to mine, and so did the book! The sequence of events and the excitement that came with it was great! Codename Specter by Karthik C Shivam Jayant is undoubtedly a great thriller/suspense book. The author has also provided some spectacular one liners and metaphors in describing the scene and settings. And just like every good book, it taught me - the complications from inside the minds of terrorists and saviours/heros. What intrigued me most was the protagonist with the codename SPECTER, whose character was as human as the author could make it. He had a dark side, similar to those of the terrorists, but that dark side was harnessed for bringing light, for bringing peace and protection to the country. Loss of loved ones can do absurd things to great people. And Codename SPECTER easily exhibits the pain and what it can make you do. And that too, without exaggerating!
Though at few places, it was hard to imagine myself IN the scene, making me much aware that I am reading it, and not in it. Moreover, more than once I felt like being on the surface due to the rapid motion of the events, instead of being deep into it the way readers like me like to. And terrorism and choices to become secret agent to eradicate terrorism comes from greater pain and emotion within a person. As a reader, I would like to feel those emotions too, at least some of it.
All in all, I am grateful for having read the book, and (spoiler alert!) do look forward to the second part of the book.
Synopsis - The main Protagonist of the story is Major Alok Kumar Goyal, a fighter who lost his belongings in a terrorist attack while traveling on a train. The other one is Anwar Ali, a reporter who lost his beloved fiance in a terrorist outbreak when she came to know about the real culprit of their nation. Major Alok was thrown in jail due to some misconception on Indian Border. Later, R&AW Research and Analysis Wing offered him to join their team to eradicate the terrorist and take retribution of his family. Team R&AW named him SPECTOR.
As a crime thriller, I don't want to spoil the real anticipation of the story. So better you can grab and read it further.
Review - First of all, I would like to thanks the author for choosing me to review his book and submit my opinion. I truly enjoyed reading this short book and would like to recommend this to crime/thriller lovers.
The title of the book is named with the name of the main protagonist of the story as Spector which is perfectly suited to the content of the book.
The Cover design of the book is fascinating for crime fiction lovers.
Language is very simple and lucid.
The narration of the book is well-plotted and is easy to understand by any reader.
As a short book of only 100 pages, you can easily skim it in one sit and get into the roller coaster life of Major Alok and Anwar Ali and How did they overwhelm terrorism in their nation. The ending of the book is smooth and satisfying. Eagerly waiting for the second part of the book or more books like this one.
Codename: Specter, co-written by Karthik C and Shivam Jayant is a crime-espionage book. The story is an about an Indian army personnel, who after going through a traumatic incident is broken into a million pieces. Broken so much that he has lost all his emotions and is swimming deep in the desire of revenge.
To channelize his rampant energy, he is recruited by the secret services and used as a deadly weapon against the terrorists. There are other characters; a young local of Kashmir who has witnessed terrible things happening to loved ones; the antagonist who has past scores to settle with the people of India.
The story idea was so amazing, so good. The only disappointment, the book was just too short for such a good plot; 100 pages didn’t do justice to it. The book could have easily been stretched into about 300 pages. I was craving for more details, more action.
The reading experience would have been better with a little improvement in the language and avoiding some editing mistakes. And again, with elaboration. I really wanted more of it.
Well, the author took care of it by ending the book in a cliffhanger (with me screaming)
To the authors: I am expecting a sequel soon. It better be LONG.
All the very best to both of them. I am really looking forward to reading the next book.
The story revolves around Major Alok Kumar Goel and reporter Anwar Ali, how similar incidents turn their respective lives upside down and how their fates entwines as they set out to avenge their loved ones, thereby giving rise to the Specter and his aid. That being said, the book is short but conveys everything that it intends to in a proper way, with just the apt amount of content that needs to be there. The pace is set right from the beginning and doesn't drop anywhere. The narration has beautifully incorporated the confusions, vulnerabilities and complexities of the characters' minds and has chiseled out the scenes and the behaviours accordingly. The dialogues were crisp, rightly fitting the entire theme of the book. The setting and descriptions were too good that a lot of intricacies were included, although in some places I found it hard to visualise a few scenes owing to the complexities. None of the characters or scenes were overdone or exaggerated. I did feel at some places that a few scenes could have been explored more and lacked depth due to the rapidness of the plot. The end seemed a bit blunt to me but really looking forward to the sequel. This is highly recommended to anyone who's looking for a compelling yet short read. I would give this a 4/5.
This is a slim book of exactly 100 pages which one can finish in one sitting.A joint effort, it has flashes of brilliance where the reader is really taken in by the twists and turns of story. Major Alok Goyal ,is a troubled soldier haunted by a family tragedy due a terrorist attack. An error in judgement on Indian border throws him in the Jail. And RAW gives him another opportunity -----to become Specter. Anwar is another character in story who also loses his love to terrorism.A chance encounter between Anwar and Specter makes him an ally to infiltrate the terrorist hub in Afghanistan.
Will he help to destroy terrorists or will be discovered by them before that ? Will he be an ally or will double cross Specter. One has to read it and find it. The cover of the book suits the story and is quite apt for it. The story is fast moving at places and one really starts enjoying the cloak and dagger game.. The sweep of story is quite broad covering Kashmir Afghanistan, Pakistan and Dubai. The only small irritant is that at places the story looks bit rushed .A definite good entrant in an Indian spy thriller genre
Well, the protagonist of the story carrying the CODENAME SPECTER presented by the author as a man of substance. The protagonist had a dark side, and that is no less than the life of a terrorist. Here the author ensured that such a character brings positivity to the lives of people. How the story went ahead is something that I wish to keep a secret, and I wish, that you all grab a copy of this book and read it. Do read and share your opinion with me and I am sure it will be a positive one. While reading the book, I was so engrossed in the story that how 2 hrs on my flight from Delhi to Kolkata went off, I didn’t know. I felt like every sequence of the story is happening right in front of me and such impact of reading, forgetting everything in my surrounding, happened to me after a long time.
codename specter is an engaging book , you cannot take break while reading it. Story is about 2 persons Alok who is a major and Anwar ali who is a reporter who lives in Kashmir. At some point in life both of them went through a tragic moment which left a scar on their soul. Both are seeking revenge and somehow life throws a golden chance for them to take revenge. Here the specter arises who is aided by the reporter , they uncovers an international conspiracy carefully strategized by ominous target. The whole book is like a beautiful yet bloodied journey running a race against time to save humanity
The story revolves contemporarily over the two main character (Alok Kumar Goel & Anwar Ali Khan). The elaboration of the story is so perfect that it seems as if reimagining an already released movie (not an Indian movie). This is a typical read although the book is exactly 100 pages it can not be read through over so quickly, it's the credits of Authors where they worked on logical and perfection of portrayal of the scenes and their probabilities. There is a particular insight to this book when it comes to this character (Syed Malik), for which I would personally recommend this book for.
