Irene Albright mysteriously disappeared from her rural California town leaving behind a heartbroken husband and bewildered teenage daughter. More than thirty years later, her granddaughter, Eleanor Westover, is finally fed up with a seven year relationship that is going nowhere. Always curious about the grandmother nobody talks about, and in need of a good distraction from her own heartache, Ellie leaves Phoenix and heads for her Grandpa’s house in the hills of southern California. It’s the first time she’s ever been in this old mining town and she finds it both charming and strange. And full of secrets. Ellie quickly finds herself trapped between the present and the past as she attempts to unravel a complex mystery that challenges everything she knew about her own life and the afterlife. Her own insecurities surface as she struggles to distinguish what is real from what might be imagined. The closer she gets to the truth, the more she must learn to trust herself and her own intuition, as she navigates her own feelings about herself, her family, and the kind of love worth risking everything for. Though Bury Me Deeper contains many elements associated with classic gothic ghost stories, the story itself is less about what can’t be explained and more about the journey to define the realities we hope family, friendship, and love.
One of my very best friends is the author of this book, so reading it was a bit nostalgic. She moved to Arizona just before my senior year in high school, and I was so excited when her brother told me she had published this book. It just took me a while to get around to reading it. It tells the story of Ellie, who never knew her grandmother, and the family never speaks of her disappearance. When Ellie’s on again / off again boyfriend leaves her again, she decides to visit her grandpa in the small town where he has lived his entire life. While there, she is told to avoid Charlie Henderson, but when she meets Charlie, she is drawn to him and can’t stay away. Ellie begins to uncover secrets about her grandma and her disappearance with Charlie’s help, and at the end, all of her questions have been answered. It gives off vibes from The Sixth Sense, but the fact that it takes place in a small town and her grandpa’s house reminds me so much of her great-grandpa’s house that I visited many times growing up, also makes it more believable for me. I really enjoyed even though there are a couple of editing errors. I know my friend is working on other books, and I’m excited to see what she publishes next. If you like mystery ghost stories, this is a fun one!
Well written, enjoyable story. It was a quick read and a great story. I would definitely read another book by this author and recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun quick read.
