"Hey, Marie. The only one I want… is you."

I confess I struggled a little bit to connect with this manga, but not because I disliked Marie! I LOVE her and want nothing but her happiness and for her to realize that this is NOT a dream. That she IS beautiful and that people around her genuinely care for her (unlike her awful parents UGH).

But it's exactly because I WANT to see those things that I felt impatient, if that's the right word? We see a lot of Marie's doubt and over-worrying in the form of her questioning what she should be doing and profusely apologizing. Again, I had no issue with this despite that my heart was so heavy for her, but that would lead me to say that I am desperate to see her happiness! I had already planned to still get volume two because I feel this is a series where you definitely see growth and transformation, but it will take time to get there.

However, Kyros absolutely stole the show when we got a chapter from his perspective and everything leading up to meeting Marie. He is SOOOOO smitten and couldn't help but giggle about it! I LOVED IT! I truly have no doubts him and Mio are going to help Marie see that she is of value, is lovely, and is oh so precious because man isn't going to let her leave again (and I mean that in the best way!) because he not only loves her, but doesn't want her to return to a family who could care less about her wellbeing! I could easily see him being in my top 5 favorite male leads of 2026!

Story-wise, the writing is good, and everything flows smoothly!

If you're looking for a "rags-to-riches" kind of story with a very hard male lead fell first trope, this is one I would definitely recommend! It might be a "try three" kind of series for several readers, but I truly have no doubts that seeing Marie slowly grow more confident and the sweet romance unfold will be 100% worth it!

throw her parents away omggg

betrothed to my sister's ex caught my eye because it's not very often readers are treated to a brown character as a love interest in east asian-made romance manga. because of the title, i was expecting a scandalous drama but the scandal is minimal despite how dark the themes get. i reeeeally like how count kyuros and maid mio caught on quick to marie's flinching due to her home life and the lengths they go through to protect her. her handmaiden mio is the best.

as readers progress, marie grows more and more confident. however, this series plays into some tropes i hate seeing in japanese-made romances like the guy being a little too focused on her looks, "girls eating = a personality", and the "born sexy yesterday" trope. there's also a random and explicit sexual assault scene that they kinda just move past and it didn't need to exist because the scene was plenty sad without it. i also like what kyuros does for marie but they don't match. he has more chemistry with his best friend (prince louisphon) and marie has more chemistry with maid mio.

lastly, count kyuros and his mom can get it 😍

As the second daughter, Marie was always considered the ugly and useless daughter doomed to be her family’s servant. Everything in her family is skin deep, and Marie has never met their standards. Even at what was supposed to be her own birthday celebration, her older sister Anastasia was set to take the spotlight from the start! Little did she know that she’d accidentally meet Count Kyros at the same party, or that it would lead to his engagement to Anastasia?! Unfortunately, the count confused which sister he fell in love with because he never got Maria’s name! In a crazy turn of events, Maria finds herself engaged to the count, and has a chance to escape her abusive family.

I can never pass up a Cinderella retelling, so of course I had to pick this up! My heart absolutely broke for Marie. She grew up with verbally and physically abusive parents, and her older sister silently went along with it even in her adult life. The verbal abuse and Marie having absolutely no self-esteem hits a little too close to home, so I feel really close to Marie because I completely understand her. I’m also curious about Anastasia because we really didn’t see much of her, but apparently she was nice? I guess we’ll see if it turns out she did indeed fake her death like I think she did, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out she went through a different kind of abuse from their parents.

All in all, this is among my favorite reads for the year. The story is well written, there’s a range of characters to both love and hate, and there’s so many ways the story can move forward as Marie slowly unpacks everything she’s gone through and begins her healing journey. I can’t wait to pick up the next volume and eventually check out the light novels and the manga! I have a feeling that this will become one of my favorite Cinderella retellings.

Well, this has given me some things to think about. While I'm glad her sister isn't cartoonishly evil like the parents, it doesn't make sense. Like, she's nice to her sister and even makes her clothes, but she never calls out the parental abuse or gives her nice clothes when it really counts? It doesn't fit.

Also, calling it now. Sister faked her own death and is crossdressing somewhere.

I'm also curious when she's going to blame herself for her sister's death. Her parents do, somehow, but that's because they suck. I expect her to blame herself once it sinks in that she was the one that he wanted all along and her sister was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Really, if the two had never met, sister would still be alive, she may think. Since she has no self esteem. I'm curious how she works through that.

Not horrible for the genre but definitely relying on a lot of showing. The characters are pretty archetypal, though I do like the ML's background of being mixed race in a homogenous western country. It adds something more to his dynamic with the FL, but I do wish his attraction went beyond the basic "oh she doesn't see me as barbaric and respects me so I must propose." The title is also misleading, he never even dated her sister. A miscommunication king, if I've ever seen one.

cute cute but i do wish they kept her freckles, 3.5 ⭐️ i need him to sit her down and explain his entire life story so that she can understand why he fell in love w her immediately and that he isn't "just being considerate"

I love this plot line just like my happy marriage. Poor Marie abused and treated like a servant just because she is educated and doesn't fit the blonde tiny princess mold. Hopeful Marie gets her happy ending, can't wait for volume 2!

I liked this anime so much I wanted to read it! This only covers episode one-two crazily enough! There’s definitely some hints in here that haven’t been shown in the anime yet and I’m excited!

I tend to have a love-hate relationship with Cinderella stories. Oftentimes, I find the abuse the female lead is put through before the male lead swoops in to save her to be so over the top that it’s impossible to believe. Take The Ayakashi Hunter’s Tainted Bride, for example. There was an entire village of people who didn’t hesitate to verbally and physically abuse a young woman for something completely out of her control—you’re telling me that not one person in the entire village felt bad for the poor girl? I found it to be rather unbelievable, but a good set-up for what was to come regardless.

In Betrothed To My Sister’s Ex, while Marie is put through both physical and psychological abuse from her parents, it isn’t so extreme that it feels unbelievable. With the cooking and cleaning that she was forced to do, she really did look like a Cinderella in my eyes. As her parents put her down as much as humanly possible to bring up her “more beautiful” sister Anastasia, it just began feeling more and more like a retelling of Cinderella rather than a Cinderella-inspired story.

There is one stark difference from Marie’s story and Cinderella’s however—Marie and her sister have a very good relationship. Although Marie is put through hell by their parents, not once does she harbour any hatred for her sister. I found this to be a very welcome change for such a story, as I really do prefer when sisters are allowed to get along despite having awful parents.

By the time prince charming swoops in and really gets the story started, I was already well-invested. Sticking with the classic themes, he mistook Marie for a maid servent at first but still fell in love with her for her wit and beauty. There are a few traits this series has that you wouldn’t find in a classic Cinderella story—a murder/accidental death/staged death mystery, implied sexual coercion, and, my favourite, a beautiful ML with tanned skin and long dark hair..! These twists are exactly why I found it to be so compelling!

While these new themes may feel a little off-putting, please rest assured that they fit into the story so well it feels magical. As the story does also share many of the common Cinderella story themes, it never feels too dark or hopeless—Marie doesn’t realize that she’s actually beautiful, she’s one of the kindest people in the story despite the heavy abuse, and of course, we have the classic evil parents.

I just can’t wait to see where the story will go from here. Will it continue following a traditional Cinderella story timeline? Or, will it continue to branch off and leave its inspiration behind? The only way to know is to read on!

¡Hola, bibliotecarias!

again putting my thoughts on the entire series on the first volume

wow i love this manga

no reincarnation, no regression, a good representation of what a life of abuse does to a person and how it affects them even when they have a supportive environment and people. all the people shitting on the fl are so dumb and stupid and WRONG like shes not being stupid or dense or misunderstanding-she knows the male lead cleared up the misunderstanding she just has such low self esteem she genuinely cannot bring herself to BELIEVE it since she was so horribly abused her whole life. like DAMN ARE YOU GUYS BLIND OR WHAT.

also love the ml. kind, caring, full of green flags, fought his friend for what he said to fl even though he knows it comes from a good place but since pointed out how it was wrong of him to do. a+ communication skills since he cleared up the misunderstanding early on. also think this is one of the few mangas/manhwas/etc. where the male lead is darker skinned and from a different culture but isn't sexualized, exotified, or fetishized in any way. his culture and people as well as other peoplefrom other cultures are shown as just that, and it made my heart so happy to read.

genuinely cannot wait until more chapters are out for this in english and just found out that theres gonna be an anime for this in summer of 2025??? LETS GOOOOOOOO
