Reuben Archer Torrey studied at Yale and in Germany before taking up a pastorate in the United States. As a gifted intellectual, administrator, and Bible teacher, he went on to pastor Moody Church in Chicago and became D.L. Moody's closest associate. In his later years, he traveled the world as an evangelist speaking to millions in Australia, New Zealand, India, England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Japan, China, Hawaii, Germany, the United States, and Canada. Torrey edited the last two volumes of the monumental "The Fundamentals" and was instrumental in the founding of both Moody Bible Institute and BIOLA University.
What a beautifully-written book! Although it was written way before I was born, I am grateful to have the wisdom and insight the author has put forth into each page.
One thing I loved about this book was that each page was rooted in Scripture. Everything that the author spoke on was tied back to a verse that clarified the context. I also liked how each personal example was short and to the point.
The main reason I read this book was to have a book to recommend to new Christians. However, as someone who has been a Christian my whole life, I even found myself pondering certain chapters and how applicable they are to my own walk of faith. I think the part that really spoke to me was about prayer and guidance. May God allow the things of this book to become the truth in my life!
Random one pulled off the shelf! Because it was a short read and I am behind on my schedule for this year, I thought I would give it a read. It is a short book! There are only 119 pages. He does a great job of keeping it simple. This is one of those books you could give to a new convert, and they would come away with some sound practical wisdom on how to make progress in the Christian life.
There are 15 short chapters, each covering essential steps in a believer's life, such as assurance, church membership, personal Bible study, prayer, serving the Lord, and more.
Even though Mr. Torrey wrote this in the early 1900's it still very much applies today. This is an excellent book that I would highly recommend to all new Christians. Very clear and concise guidance on how to start and be successful in your Christian life.
The book how to succeed in the Christian life by RA Torrey. Was an excellent read for any level, believer, new or seasoned. It will give a path to a new believer, and it will encourage a seasoned believer to a deeper walk. I loved this book. I highly encourage any believer to read this book.!!
So this very brief book is a help to new Christians but it should come with a warning or two. Torrey was Keswick and thought he could get a multiple baptism of the Holy Spirit. The other teaching is pretty solid and he doesn't talk about other Keswick theology so it could be used with caution.
