John Legg – Colorado Territory Bk 2 – Pike’s Vengeance – Reviewed 3/4/20 – Read 3/3/21
Laying blame on yourself sometimes leads you to do things you would not normally do!
Brodie Pike has made his living as a bounty hunter, but there were times when it did not sit right with him. While he was in a small town picking up supplies, the local Marshal confronted him, placing him under arrest for the murder of Harry Tilford. He told the Marshall that there had to be a mistake as he had no clue who Tilford was, but that he would go peaceably if he could keep his guns until they were back at his office. The Marshall agreed. Walking to the jail the two conversed, the Marshall, Milt Yeager told Pike that he had done a little checkin’ on him, seems like you have a reputation of bein’ an honest man, and a dang good bounty hunter. He also said that Pike was not known to killin’ men unfairly. So, he felt more inclined to believe that Pike was not guilty, but still needed to let the judge and jury make that decision.
After being put in the cell, Pike heard a ruckus out in the street. He called out and asked what was going on. The Marshal explained that a crowd had gathered, and they were fixin’ to try to hang Pike. Knowing that he and his deputy would not be able to hold the mob off, he decided to let Pike go, he told him to get out of town and never come back. Marshall Yeager showed Pike a hole where a fallen tree had hit the roof and told him to pull himself up, then to drop down behind the jail. Pike made it through and made his way quietly back to the hotel to retrieve his things. He figured to pick up his horse and head for the hills and not look back.
Reaching the stables, he started saddling his horse when he heard someone coming up behind him. Pony Stallings, the liveryman, told him that there was no need to shoot, that he was not his enemy. Just about then they both heard the gunshots. The mob must have broken into the jail to get Pike. Knowing with that many bullets there was no way the two lawmen could have survived, regret-filled Pike. Pony told him that he knew that Pike had not killed Tilford, because he figured he knew who was guilty. This guy was definitely a mean one, so Pike should get out of town. Pike’s remorse started filling him with anger. He asked Pony to tell him who the guilty one was and that he would make sure the Marshall’s death would be avenged. As Pony started listing the men that were responsible, a moment of doubt crowded into his mind, but he pushed it aside.
And the story begins…
What did I like? This book was interesting in several ways, first Pikes’ feelings of wanting to make things right and making sure that someone paid for the misdeeds. I was moved by his not allowing the discrimination of others, or to the abuse (defilement) of women. But the other is the most important thing, and that is what can happen to a person that blames himself for being the cause of those same misdeeds. How it can lead them to do things that they would not normally do. Additionally, taking things at face value without checking out the circumstances or trusting their inner instincts. These values were indeed important to most of the men of the west during the 1800s. Values that the twenty-first century seems to have forgotten to teach our young’uns. The character of Brodie Pike was awesome, I see that there was a book one, “Buckskin County War” and I have it on my list of books that I want to read. Obviously, he impressed me!
What will you like? Action, and more action, gunplay, romance, a touch of humor, rage, and revenge, or is it avenge? As you can see from above there is a ton of things going on in this book. I think that the characters are strong, well built for the type of action and gunplay that happens. They are likable with a ton of bad guys thrown in to keep things moving along. The details and descriptions are extremely well done, bringing this storyline to life. I was impressed particularly with the descriptions of the guns, horses, and surroundings that John used in his narrative. He used descriptive words that showed us the villages, towns, mountains, horses, and men that made the storyline so interesting. An excellent read that will certainly fit in anyone’s Western Library.

This is a fast moving series of outstanding western accomplishments and Pike, along with some of his Indian associates help tame a marauding group of townspeople! Entertaining and very fulfilling renditions of exciting confrontations!
Definitely another five star masterpiece by Mr. Legg, as he leads us on one exciting adventure after the other! No slow downs, as Pike pulls no punches in his determination to bring justice to those responsible for their ongoing misdeeds! He finds himself at odds with some Indians, who want to hold him accountable for some white settlers who injured and killed some older group of Indians!
Mr. Legg's outstanding descriptive storylines successfully portrays compassion and understanding of the ongoing hardships, and how the unjust are adjudicated for their misdeeds. Too, the character selections are unsurpassed in their ongoing efforts to pacify any reader's desires, and maintains the reader's undivided attention from beginning to end, with their commanding assignments!
Definitely recommend this compassionately outstanding western masterpiece to all readers, but especially to you lovers of intriguing renditions of realistic renditions of outstanding western masterpieces! Even you non-western readers will find yourselves unable to put Pike's continuous exploits aside, once the excitement starts it never ends! Anyone who doesn't chose to follow Pike will most definitely be the loser!!!😃

Certainly different, but very good
Mr Legg chose a far different path for the storyline in this book. Pike, the bounty hunter, sides with a tribe of Ute indians. I wont disclose story, but it is a good book to read.
But then, everything I've read by Mr Legg, has been good reading.

Pike's Vengeance
This was a great action packed adventure that covered everything you could possibly have been able to make sense of the ins ad outs of relations between whites and the good Indians in the old west.

Good read!
John Legg , tells a good and sometimes comical story. The way Pike hands out vengeance is well thought out and fits the crimes for which it is handed out for. The way he goes about getting it done is pure comedy. I enjoyed this book a lot. I hope you do too.

Another Great Western By John Legg
I’m slowly reading my way through John Legg’s books. The author did not disappoint. If you’re looking for a good book to read then get this book. Like I said… you won’t be disappointed.

I liked both books but
The first book in this two book series was good and so was this one but this second one had two blasphemous words that always ruins a story for me.

This series was exceptional - I enjoyed it very much and hope to see more of Pike, enjoyed his character. Let's have justice doled out the same way the crooks give out their evil deeds!!

If you enjoy westerns with kick butt main characters you will enjoy this story as it has action in spades. Pike manages to get in some difficult situations but his idea of vengance is direct and final.
