60-Day Enneagram Devotional #6

The Guardian: Growing as an Enneagram 6

Rate this book
The Enneagram is an ancient personality typology using nine points within a circle to represent nine distinct personality types. This sixty-day devotional is for the Guardian, number 6 of the Enneagram personality types.
This book will help Guardians, and those who love them, better understand how God created them and how best to use their unique gifts to serve Him and love others. It features a full explanation of what the Enneagram is and how it benefits people, followed by a full description of what it means to be a 6, including the Guardian's deadly sin and their greatest strength.
Some attributes of the Guardian:

Motivation: Security: physical safety, having a supportive community, and maintaining the status quo.

Biggest Fear: Sixes fear being without support or guidance. This, they fear, might lead to them making horrible life-altering decisions and choices.

Head Triad: Sixes, along with Fives and Sevens, receive all information as something that needs to be thought over and analyzed before they can trust their feelings or gut to process it. This is the most pronounced in Sixes as they take information in as something to analyze…and then analyze their own conclusion.
The sixty days of this devotional are split into six 10-day topics that include uniqueness, weakness, strength, pain points, and how Guardians react in times of stress and growth.

I love learning about the Enneagram and as a Six, I wanted to learn how to use the Enneagram in conjunction with Scripture to grow and develop Spiritually. I have read a few other of Elisabeth Bennett's Enneagram devotionals and loved them, and this one was great as well! I love the way she breaks the book down into sections to focus on how we as Sixes can develop through Scripture during seasons of Stress and Growth, as well as using our wings and the strengths we pull from them. This devotional dives deep into all aspects of the Enneagram and helps us see how we can best reflect God's character through our own individual Enneagram types! I recommend this book to anyone who is an Enneagram Six, has a six wing, someone who has a close relationship with an Enneagram six, or even just someone who may struggle with anxiety.

This book was not for me. Her theology does not match mine, for starters.

I really loved this enneagram book for Type 6's. It has daily devotions that combine scripture with enneagram truth to help you reach your highest self. I love the gentle way she approaches weaknesses in order to keep comfort and safety the number one priority for 6's. Since this is my type, I related the most to this enneagram book above the others that I read in the series. I have loved flipping through each one of the books (each one of the 9 book series) to find one of the first devotionals that teach each type how they specifically reflect God. There is so much growth to be found in these books. They are an amazing resource for anyone looking to better themselves; utilizing their weaknesses and gospel truths together for the most impactful change.

So thankful for this book! Whether you are an enneagram six, have someone close to you his is an enneagram six, or even if you just struggle with anxiety, this devotional is such a great resource. The devotions are powerful but short, making the idea of doing them daily actually tangible. Each day includes an application to help put faith into action. This book has been so soothing to the soul and beneficial in seeing how God’s glory can be seen in both strength and weakness. Can’t wait to read the other numbers!

The beginning holds a great overview of the Enneagram for those that are new or just beginning their journey. The rest is painfully simplistic and overly concerned with addressing sin behaviors. It is written as if for a teenager living in fear of sinning and striving to do better, ironically, doesn’t seem beneficial for the growth of a 6 who already lives with a lot of fear and anxiety. It leans heavily charismatic. 10 years ago I would have loved this, but after shedding some toxic beliefs, I find it hard to grasp any meaningful take aways.

Not going to lie, I picked this up at the Target clearance bin and thought it was just a book about enneagrams. But it is in fact a book about the 6 enneagram (which I am not) and a Christian (which I am not) devotional. I'll keep this in my therapy back pocket though for if I work with a Christian client who I feel like may enjoy it.

Wonderful 60 day devotional that walks you through what it is like and how to grow as an Enneagram 6. Very well written, covering a lot of topics applicable to a Six and concise in information. I loved this devotional and will do it again and again.

The Guardian: Growing as an Enneagram 6 is one book in a series of 60-day enneagram devotionals by certified enneagram coach Elisabeth Bennett. Elisabeth is also the face of the popular Instagram account Enneagram.Life and was trained by my favorite enneagram teacher, Beth McCord.

Devotionals for types 2, 4, and 9 released in September 2020; types 1, 6, and 7 release March 16, 2021; and types 3, 5, and 8 release September 2021. As a type 6, I was thrilled to be selected for the launch team for The Guardian devotional!

The Guardian starts with an introduction, which gives background on the enneagram and 6s in particular. The devotional is then divided into six sections: 10 Days of Loyalty, 10 Days of Killing Fear, 10 Days of Courage, 10 Days of Saying No to Anxiety, 10 Days of Handling Competition, and 10 days of Peace. I liked how the sections alternated between a 6’s strengths and virtues and our weaknesses and common pain points. The last two sections were a pleasant surprise, as they focused on the stress number and the growth number of the 6 (3 and 9, respectively).

Along with Elisabeth, four other authors contribute to the devotional. I did not mind the change in author voice, although I found some days (such as the history lesson on St. Patrick) less applicable than others. Sarah Upton, the author’s younger sister and a 6w5, wrote my favorite devotionals, probably because she spoke more to me as a fellow 6. Her devotions felt the most fleshed-out and relatable. I do not believe that someone has to be your type or even similar to you to help you, but I often found it hard for the non-6 authors of the devotionals to connect with the experience of a 6 as well as Sarah did.

Each day’s devotional has a theme, such as “Loyalty in the Bible” or “What is Anxiety?”, and includes one or more Scriptures related to that theme. Each devotion ends with a “Shift in Focus” section that includes two or three reflection or application questions.

For the most part, the content was helpful, relevant to type 6, and thoroughly biblical. I appreciated the Scriptures to go along with each day’s readings, because without Bible reading, it’s more of a gift book and not a devotional.

I enjoyed the brief nature of each devotion. Typically I could read each devotion in about 10 minutes; if the reader has more time and interest, she could reflect or journal for 30 minutes or more. However, the brief nature of a devotional doesn’t lend itself to a thorough examination of some weighty topics like anxiety. I often felt like the devotions were too short to do a topic justice. For example, the author gave an example of 6s being frustrated when others are not as loyal to a sports team as they are. This felt like a minor example to an important concept that I wish she had explained more.

As expected, a one-page devotional runs the risk of being overly simplistic and even cliché. For example, at times cliché Bible verses on anxiety (“do not worry about tomorrow”) accompanied overly simplistic advice like “Stop fearing because God is in control!”. Helpful reminders, to be sure, but I didn’t find myself gleaning any thoughtful insights or applications on these days.

I found the author’s discussion of anxiety as sin versus anxiety as mental illness inadequate. When describing anxiety and sin, the author states that “Some anxiety does come from sinful fear that can be traced back to wanting to be in control and not fully letting yourself trust in God.” Perhaps because I am a therapist who treats anxiety disorders (as well as a 6 who experiences anxiety), I thought this explanation of anxiety and sin could do more harm than good. Ultimately, I believe that all anxiety, whether a result of sin, mental illness, or everyday stress, is a result of living in a fallen world, so I found the author’s distinction unhelpful. Again, the brevity of a devotional impedes detailed explanations. While this is not a book solely on coping with anxiety, I felt like this concept (and others) needed more depth.

I enjoyed reading The Guardian and I think it would be a helpful and encouraging devotional for most Christian readers. However, perhaps because of my profession as a psychologist or the level of depth I prefer on the topics of personality or spirituality, I don’t think this is a devotional I will find myself re-reading in the future.

Elisabeth and the other authors who contributed to this devotional did an amazing job at telling enneagram 6’s exactly what we need to hear in order to learn, grow, and have patience with ourselves. I enjoyed everyday if this devotional. I especially loved learning more about the numbers 6s go to in stress and health. The devotional was full of amazing lessons and practical steps to continue learning and growing.

Having recently discovered the Enneagram, and learning that my husband of 35 years is a 6, I desperately, genuinely wanted and needed to understand what that means, what it looks like in his life, and how I can live with him with awareness and grace for how God created him. This book was exactly what I needed! Elisabeth not only explained what it looks like to be a 6, with strengths and weaknesses, she explained the diversity within the number and how each strength is a reflection of our Creator and each weakness or fear is answered completely, only in Christ. Each day, she used the Word of God to validate and encourage, while showing a 6 how to recognize and deal appropriately with the fear and anxiety that can plague them,” weighing their thoughts and feelings about God against what He says.”
My favorite part was the Shift in Focus sections, where the author challenged us to examine these fears and motivations in the light of the gospel and God’s love for us.
The book is incredibly insightful, instructional and a wonderful tool for any 6, or anyone who loves a 6!

Great devotional to help with understanding who you are, behaviors you go to in stress, and how to grow using your strengths. The insight of the enneagram has helped me identify so many patterns and behaviors, but this book doesn’t stop there. It gives you encouragement and questions to ask yourself while you are experiencing them to help you grow into your strengths instead of getting stuck in your weakness.

Enneagram is a marvelous tool and Elisabeth Bennett has true insight and knowledge. As a 6, I found this spot on for my type. It spoke to me, touched me and helped me grow. I thought Elisabeth's insight helpful and well researched. I highly recommend these devotionals and hope the other types get to experience Elisabeth's insight.
