They’ve been stripped of everything but a refurbished bus and each other. And it might be the best thing that’s ever happened to them.

Jacob Murphy always felt like the invisible brother…until he fell in love with and married the woman who dated his younger brother. Then he became the despised brother. Driven to prove himself worthy of respect, he gambled everything on becoming the successful brother, but with his property speculation business falling apart, he’s ready to admit defeat. He’s lost nearly every worldly good he’s acquired, and after years of disappointments and heartache, it looks like his marriage is about to go the same way.

Kate Murphy lied her way out of life in a trailer park—a life she felt both trapped in and ashamed of. Only Jacob knows the truth about her background. But keeping up appearances has slowly strangled her life and relationships, and even her marriage has become strained at best. In desperation, she makes a plan to escape from it all—ironically, in a skoolie. But there’s still a tender place in her heart for the man she married, and in a moment of compassion, she offers to take Jacob with her.

Stripped of pride and pretension and struggling to adjust to their new 160 square-foot mobile lifestyle, Jacob and Kate are forced to confront the deception, hurt, and loneliness that have plagued them both. Will their strained circumstances be the death knell for their marriage, or will they allow humility to usher in the healing they need to rebuild?

This Life is a tender love story of second chances in marriage, of romance and redemption.

Jennifer Rodewald is passionate about the Word of God and the powerful vehicle of story. Four kids and her own personal superman make her home in southwestern Nebraska delightfully chaotic.

Born in Colorado, she experienced both the seclusion of rugged mountain living and the busy streets of a Denver suburb during her growing up years. Somewhere in the middle of college, she married a Husker and found her way back to the quiet lifestyle of a rural area, which suits just fine.

Blessed with a robust curiosity, Jen loves to research. Whether she’s investigating the history of a given area, the biography of a Christian icon, or how nature declares the glory of God, her daily goal is to learn something new. Aiming to live with boundless enthusiasm, her creed is vision, pursuit, and excellence.

Jen lives and writes in a lovely speck of a town where she watches with amazement while her children grow up way too fast, gardens, and marvels at God’s mighty hand in everyday life.

This Life by Jennifer Rodewald is the fourth book in the Murphy Brothers series. Helen and Kevin Murphy have 7 sons and right there I just have to say I would love to be Helen! What an amazing life to have 7 boys! Jacob’s and Kate’s story has been built up through the first 3 books so I was really looking forward to reading it. I have loved all the books in this series so much but I think this one may be my favorite. This author’s style and themes are excellent. I appreciated the adventures we got to experience through Jacob and Kate. The friends they meet along the way are lovely side characters. Their relationship is what drives the plot. The angst and tension is spot on. I was pulling hard for them to let go and love each other. The Bible verses sprinkled throughout are encouraging and such a blessing to this reader. I was happy to see the next book in the series will be available in May ‘21.

Oh, please, may I give 10 stars? Because this book deserves it. I have never been disappointed in a Jennifer Rodewald book. Everything she writes is tremendous. This Murphy Brothers series has been so amazing. But I must say that I did not like Jacob and Kate when they made appearances in the previous four Murphy Brothers books. Not even a little bit.

Then the author tells their story--a story that is so painful it had me weeping in more than one place--and worshiping, too. Jacob and Kate have had problems before, and heartaches to be sure, but now they have been stripped of everything, absolutely everything. Because sometimes God must take all that we put before Him. They thought their life was good, but oh, how they missed that mark. And deep down inside, they knew it. They had a lot, but happiness eluded them.

Rodewald takes us to deeply into the hearts of these two and their pain, that at times it hurts to even read it. But oh, what a story of God's grace, love and redemption. Nothing is out of His care. He SEES us! This one will be a definite re-read in the future and will hold pride of place on my shelves. it just about did me in. Bravo!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. I received no compensation. The opinion in this review is expressly my own.

This Life gives us the story of Jacob and Kate Murphy who seem to have their nose stuck up in the air. But we find out that their life isn't as beautiful and luxury-driven as they would hope. In fact, they have to give up everything in order to find out that less is better. They give up their condo, king-sized bed and go buy a skoolie. It was good to get to know Jake and Katie and see how they learned to turn their lives over to God, and the contentment that they found through living smaller, forgiveness, and family.

If you've read books 1-3 in the Murphy Brothers series, you probably didn't care much for cold, snooty Kate and Jacob. Especially once you learned that they'd betrayed Jackson Murphy. There's a world of pain and insecurity hiding beneath that hoity-toity veneer, and Jennifer Rodewald exposes every last drop of it by letting her characters hit rock bottom and then sending them on the road, where simplicity and intimacy is forced upon them.

As the story says, the worst times can end up becoming the best times, once we've stripped away all the excess that has been distracting us from what's most important: God and relationships being at the top of that list.

This Life also delves into a theme I've not often seen in romance - the dignity of work. God made work for man, not the other way around, and that's ably demonstrated here.

This isn't your typical romance - the characters are already married - but it's an important story about redemption and second chances. And even if you've never declared bankruptcy and boondocked across the American West in a schoolie, you may recognize yourself in Jacob and Kate - your shame, pride, cowardice, and your resistance to complete honesty and vulnerability, even with those closest to you. Even your spouse. I know I saw a little of myself there, and I'm better for having read This Life.

Just so good and definitely my favorite Murphy Brothers book. also it came at a time in my life when I needed it.
Jake and Kate lose everything except for each other (barely) and go through a transforming journey of discovering what's important in life while deconstructing the lies their marriage was built on. I love romances about married people, and after starting the series, I was super excited to see Jake get his own book, as he was already married before the series began and obviously not in a good place in the other books.
I needed to cry this week with everything going on in the world, and this book gave me that outlet and was just what I needed with what's going on in my own life.

This Life by Jennifer Rodewald is my favorite in the series. I was glued to this story until the end because it was so good. This book is about a marriage relationship that started off in lies. It was falling apart and God restored it. It took losing everything and yet they gained what matters. I was rooting for them and shed a tear or two in the process. Y'all with Jesus there is always HOPE. I love this author because she shows life can be gritty and she always shows through her characters that God can do all things. Nothing is too hard for God. I highly encourage readers to purchase this book and go along with Kate and Jacob on their grand adventure in a skoolie nonetheless to find what truly matters.

Well, wow! I love the Murphy Brothers series and This Life is an amazing, redemptive addition to it. This novel is my new favorite of the series, which is funny because I sure did not like Kate and Jacob when they appeared in the previous books. If you have not read the stories that come before this one, you could still pick up This Life and understand what is going on. The author does a great job of showing us what happened in the past and how that has impacted this couple’s married life.

This book is about two broken people who actually truly love each other. Yet, they started out their lives together in a way that broke bonds and hurt Jake’s family. Not only that, but they have been carrying the secret of Kate’s past for their entire marriage, as well. They both feel like outsiders looking in on the Murphy family and don’t really see how things can ever be better. Throw in a bunch of heartache and grief that they have had to deal with in their marriage, as well as the ever present doubt that both Jake and Kate carry about whether their spouse actually loves them, and there is good reason for this marriage to be struggling.

I loved seeing Jake and Kate start fresh. It was not easy to leave the life that was falling apart around them, but I liked that they both put their full effort into doing what needed to be done to live the Boondocking lifestyle. It became apparent that God had a hand in every little step along the way and I loved seeing Kate and Jacob realize that. This was an amazingly beautiful reconciliation novel that will stay with me for a long time.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

What a life change! From living in a downtown Seattle apartment and driving a Land Rover to living in a converted bus and using a motorbike for local transportation.

Jacob and Kate learn so much during this huge time of transition. It was a good journey to be a part of. The strangers God placed in their life to pour out love and guidance was spectacular.

This Life by Jennifer Rodewald is a marvellous contemporary novel. It is the fourth book in the Murphy Brothers series but can be read as a stand-alone.
There are seven Murphy brothers. In this book the focus is on Jacob and his wife Kate. The novel is about learning to draw closer to God and discovering what it really means to be rich beyond measure.
Wealth is never about worldly riches. Worldly riches are “trappings of wealth and luxury.” They ensnare us as we chase the next thing we must have. Worldly riches distract us from being truly rich and knowing God. When our stuff overwhelms us, we often relegate God to the bottom of the pile. We think that we do not need Him as we attempt to stand in our own strength. The truth is that if our foundation is not built on God’s world, it will crumble and we will fall. We need to declutter our lives and remove what separates us from God. We should push into God first thing in the morning. We should thank Him last thing at night. And we should press into Him every minute of every day. There is never a time when we do not need God.
Success as measured by the world means nothing. “Success could be empty.” The measure of success in God’s kingdom is relationship with God and with people around us. We need to treat everyone as a friend and as a child of God.
Happiness is not supposed to be linked to our stuff. There will be too many highs and lows as we chase the next new thing. “I thought happiness was a destination.” Happiness is a journey. Happiness is linked to joy. Joy comes from knowing God.
Sometimes we believe we are not good enough for God to see us. “God simply did not have time to hear someone of her insignificance.” God hears us all. He sees us all. Sometimes we have to meet God in our pit of despair. “God had met her in the darkest places.” When we know God, we are rich beyond belief.
This Life was a powerful book about reigniting relationships with God and with others. We need to strip away the stuff and meet God.
I love this Murphy Brothers series. Jennifer Rodewald writes heartfelt stories that deal with relevant issues that impact us all.
I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.

This is different than most of the Murphy Brothers books. It is about a married couple. Kate and Jacob are unhappily married. They are both caught up in making money, spending to excess and acquiring ’the good things’. Their pride will not let them admit all is not well until they have to when they hit rock bottom. This is the story of what can happen when all the “stuff “is stripped away and we must find happiness without it.
There are some wonderful life lessons in this book. ( I have come to expect no less if it’s a Jennifer Rodewald book.)
- I loved that an emphasis is placed on the value of hard work. This is not often expressed but vital to life.
- Also how a great value is placed on friends that God gives to help us along the way. And how God can also use us to be those friends.
- And that marriage is hard work and it is God ordained and worth it.
There are some great quotes in the story
“God sometimes pries our hands from the things we clutch the hardest so that we have open hands to receive what he longs to give us.”
“There is a delicate balance between being determined and stupidly stubborn. Usually arrogance is the boundary…”
There is so much wealth in things that have nothing to do with possessions.”
I highly recommend this book!

One of the things I love about Jennifer Rodewald’s stories is that they’re not just about two people falling in love; they’re about two people learning how to make a relationship work. And this book really exemplifies that. Falling in love is often the easy part of a relationship, and to a certain extent, that was Kate and Jacob’s story in the beginning. But their circumstances and the way they presented themselves to everyone else laid a shaky foundation for their relationship, and things only spiralled down from there.

Having read this series from the beginning, it’s been obvious that all was not well in Kate and Jacob’s world, but they haven’t exactly inspired sympathy before now. Nothing short of hitting rock bottom could have turned this couple around, and while they really did bring that brokenness upon themselves, I found myself rooting for them from the beginning of this story—rooting for them to find their way out of the mess they were in and rooting for them to find their way not just back to each other but out of the shame and insecurity had been driving them for so many years.

Rodewald excels at inviting readers into each step along her characters’ journeys—emotional, spiritual, and physical in this case. And she excels at bringing them home, often through unexpected but meaningful twists and turns. If you’re looking for romance that really settles into your heart and expands your understanding of how God works all things for the good of those who love him—even those who have wandered and become lost—then Jennifer Rodewald needs to be on your must-read list.

I received a copy of this novel from the author. This has not influenced the content of my review, which is my honest and unbiased opinion.

With This Life, author Jennifer Rodewald has tackled another story with married protagonists (shoutout to her novel Finding Evergreen!), and it is well done! The characters’ journey through brokenness toward a place of renewal and hope is relatable and poignant.

Jacob and Kate’s story finally reveals the truth behind a rift hinted at in the previous books — with some classic Murphy family humor and wisdom, of course! As a reader, I’m always drawn into Rodewald’s stories through her emotive style. One of the ways her style compliments the story of Jacob and Kate is through their natural progression of anger, guilt, renewal, forgiveness, and the honesty commitment requires. I was happy seeing how their history and friendship would transition into something fashioned of trials and influenced by faith. I rooted for them in the moments one of them stood up for the other, or shared a moment of pain or contentment.

This story brings the Murphys full circle through a circuitous route of travel and new friendships. (the idea of living in a skoolie reminds me of my childhood RV adventures.) I LOVE Bryce and the Salazars, influential new friends of Jacob and Kate who demonstrate selfless love and grace. They reinforce the thought that happiness is a choice — a fact that Jacob and Kate have to learn on their own, but find even more joy in when they figure out how to navigate life and happiness together.

Thank you to the publisher for the review copy. This is my honest review.

I have not met a book written by Jennifer Rodewald that I have not liked, but if there was going to be one, This Life is that book. Yet, that was not at all the case with the fourth book in the Murphy Brothers series.

Readers have met Jacob and Kate through the family’s eyes in the previous books, but we haven’t gotten to know them at all until now. There is definitely more than meets the eye here.
As Jacob and Kate trade their luxury condo for a skoolie and meet just the right people, their history is revealed, and I just could not help but root for these two broken and hurting people who felt so alone in their pain and brokenness.

With deep and complex characters, you cannot help but be drawn to, this moving and emotional story about how being stripped of everything we hold important in life opens our eyes to what really matters, to the truest blessings in our lives resonated with me. It’s about finding ourselves and leaning on God when all hope seems lost. About healing.

Oh, those Murphy brothers! I first fell in love with Matt and Lauren… and through their story became curious about Connor… and to a bit lesser extent Jackson. Their stories didn’t disappoint – they drew me in and made me love them. I didn’t much care for Jacob and Kate, though. I could sense a story there – I knew there had to be baggage behind the things that made them who they were and caused them to act the way they did. But, still… I didn’t ache to know their stories quite the way I did Connor’s.

But… as usual… Jennifer Rodewald drew me in from the first page. She never fails to disappoint! Somehow, I found myself identifying with both Jacob and Kate. Not just one of them, but both of them – even though the reasons behind their actions were seemingly different.

“This Life” had all the “feels.” I cried as I felt the hurt on both sides. I cried as I saw the sweetness of healing between two struggling people – healing for each of them individually; healing between them; and their discovery of the healing love of God.

I love the way Jennifer writes her characters. They are deep. Complex. Real. With real life problems and baggage. There’s always something that speaks to me – sometimes pushing me to recognize and look at something in my own life; sometimes encouraging; but always drawing the reader closer to the Truth, Love, and Hope of our God. She doesn’t just throw a verse out here and there so she can call it “Christian.” Nor does it feel forced down our throats in contrived situations. It’s just life. As it happens. With God right in the middle of it all. In all its messiness.

You find yourself identifying with and cheering for her characters and Kate and Jacob are no exception. Kate is way more real, sensitive, deep and artistic than you’d ever imagine. As she contemplates the broken relationship between herself and her husband, she sees an analogy in the landscape:

"Once again, her attention traveled back to the oncoming mass of beauty. Those mountains, that lake, both held the potential within themselves to destroy the other. But together… Wow. Together they were stunning. Complementary in their strengths and complete in their beauty."

Wow indeed.

The hurts are deep. The struggle is real. And yet, in Kate’s words,

“Maybe this was the way from here to there, to where they both wanted to be. Maybe if he entrusted her with the broken places of his heart, and she gave him hers, they could find their way to the same side of that canyon.”

In losing everything, maybe we can find what really matters. As another character said, “… what maybe seems like the worst thing ever can turn into the biggest blessing of your life.”

The only problem? Jennifer Rodewald has ruined me for other authors, lol. And I can read much faster than she can publish. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next!

I didn't want it to end!

A tender story of brokenness and hope, This Life tugged at my heartstrings. It was a lovely journey from despair to wholeness. I appreciated how the author depicted their despair without dragging the story down. I was completely captivated by the characters and thoroughly enjoyed the story!

The insecurities Kate and Jacob carried into their marriage continued to force a wedge between them, heightened by their fear of speaking of them. While they both dearly loved each other, neither had been willing to open their heart for fear of rejection. As they were stripped of everything they had trusted in, they were able to learn what truly matters. And learned to surrender to God and seek Him for everything they need.

Bryce and Sally, the couple who sold them Gert - the skoolie - were filled with an infectious joy. I loved the way they trusted in the Lord and exemplified what it is like to follow Jesus in such a poignant way.

The details about living on the road were so thorough, I wondered if the author had lived a boondocking life herself! How fascinating to think about what this might be like - though I confess to a preference for air conditioning when needed and plenty of room to get around!

If you enjoy Christian fiction, you'll want to be sure and read This Life and the entire Murphy Brothers series.

Jacob and Kate have been married (increasingly unhappily) for years, but not until they hit rock-bottom do they really talk enough to each see the other's side of the story. Forced out of the lavish lifestyle they've grown accustomed to and setting up a new life in a 'skoolie', will they fall apart completely, or learn to stand on their own two feet, with the help of each other - and God?

The glimpses of Jacob and Kate's marriage in previous books in the series left me intrigued and wanting to see things fixed - but I confess that I never imagined anything as drastic! However, I loved the way that things worked out, both between the two of them and with those they met along the way. It was both heart-warming and inspiring. It also pulled me in from the very first page and held my attention right to the (highly satisfying) end. Note that, though part of a series, this book could be read alone - though I would highly recommend reading the entire series, in order, because they're so much worth reading! A great book.

Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.

This was another fantastic contemporary romance from Jennifer Rodewald. I absolutely loved this faith-stirring novel of hope, redemption, and new beginnings.

I was never overly fond of Jacob and Kate in the previous books but this story completely flipped my opinion of them. I saw a completely new side to them as they faced some seriously daunting challenges. I admired their grit and determination and was rooting so hard for their success.

I love how Rodewald always puts God at the center of her novels. She's so good at showcasing His mighty love, at showing that no matter how hard life gets, He's always right there with us.

All of the books in this series have been excellent but I think this one just might be my favorite. If you're a fan of this genre, I highly recommend picking up a copy. You won't regret it.

This life was worth every word read.

I have followed the Murphy Brothers and i know that Jacob has picked my interest from Jackson’s story and the love triangle and oh I got a front row seat to Jacobs and Kates life it in this book.

Like its title This Life, is a journey that takes us through the highway and byways of Jacob and Kate's life and how life humbled them in every area of their lives because their foundation wasnt right. Jacob and Kate had to learn to reconstruct their lives with the proper foundation when all the deck of lies and bad choices came crumbling down.

I saw Gods faithfulness through and through in the little mercies that was extended to Jacob and Kate on their reconstructive journey. I experienced the value of genuine friendships that lead to Jesus, I saw the importance of a good seed sown in the life of a child when he/she sees their parent consistently devote their time and space to God.

Oh forgiveness, how the boulders of shame and guilt drop off when confession is made and forgiveness is granted. The true love of family.

Jennifer this was one very good book.

A Phenomenal very moving story

I love the writing style of this story. I love the true theme of how when you have lost everything (shifting sand) you have nothing left to lose that all is gain from God. He strips the couple down to their hidden secrets and flaws. Once they are recognized, they can heal. God can rebuild you (both) on solid ground. There are important themes of dignity, humility, hard work, (re)building trust, and establishing true connection with yourself and others. We are all beloved of God. Let us (re)align rightly with Him.
It is an intimate look at how, as individuals, we bring our wounds and scars that we have left unhealed by the Savior, how it affects how we think act and perceive events and others. How we can misunderstand and take our spouse for granted because of terrible communication and listening skills. So much is packed into this story that I havent even mentioned. was reading it on Kindle Unlimited and I loved it so much I bought it!

What an amazing story! The biggest thing I got from this story is how important communication is between people in our lives. The second thing is lies always come back to affect our relationships. Kate and Jacob Murphy are both hiding secrets from each other and their families. When their world comes crashing down, they have to chose whether to face things together or on their own. It’s surprising what a little communication will do. Kate and Jacob meet some people who thru their examples turn things around for this couple at the end of their ropes. Thankful for a second chance, Kate and Jacob learn things that will make their lives better. A great story about second chances at love and relationships. I was given an advance reader copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Jacob and Kate's marriage and life are falling apart. They have lost everything. Kate believes Jacob married her because she was his brother's girlfriend first, and he wanted to get back at him for overshadowing him. Jacob believes Kate married him because he was the better bet to have the life of financial success that she wants. In a last ditch effort to save herself, Kate buys an old school bus made into an RV, a skoolie. In the end she asks Jacob to go with her.

I love the depth of vulnerability and emotions of Kate and Jacob. The honesty they finally have with each other is the tipping point of saving them. Their rawness is very relatable.

The supporting characters are well developed as well. I loved seeing the growth and progression of Kate and Jacob beginning to seek and rely on God. This is a sweet/clean book. I highly recommend it.

Such a timely book after a pandemic where people have realized they are living well beyond their means, are living parallel lives in the same home and have gotten so far apart due to goals and materialistic dreams. I loved how Jacob had to hit rock bottom to find his way back to God and the things that were truly important and Kate needed to learn that material possessions won't get you happiness. Love the characters of Bryce and Sally.and there is so much truth and power in the statement: "You work hard, stay humble, and treat people like friends and family. That's success in life, no matter who you are or what you do." If we as Christians would just model this then maybe this world would change.

ThisBoondockingLife

This Murphy Brothers story focused on Jacob and Kate. While their backstory had been revealed in previous books, especially through Jackson, there were so many added parts to the story. The theme throughout the book was how God often is best revealed when we have lost all hope and He teaches us valuable lessons through adversity. His presence can change our worst circumstances and reveal His greatest miracles. This was a story of finding what is truly important and valuable, a wealth not based on possessions or money. It reinforces the knowledge and help of true Christians that God places in our lives when we need them most. Although all of the Murphy Brothers books rate high to this reader, this story had the strongest appeal for those of us who need reassurance that God is truly faithful and we are never alone.

Rich, honest, encouraging second chance story

I often wonder why so many romance novels seem to end near the “I do”. I loved that this one begins seven years into Jacob and Kate’s marriage when their prospects are bleak. In the previous Murphy books this couple has been unlikeable: standoffish, pretentious, unkind. From this unhopeful place, the author has deftly woven a love story in which her protagonists learn to come clean, learn humility, learn to respect and depend upon each other and others. Like the rest of this series, I hardily recommend this rich, honest, encouraging second chance tale. While this book can be read as a stand alone, the series is best when read in order.

Jennifer Rodewald has never disappointed me with any of her books! Every time I read a new one, I am sure she can never write one this good again...but she does! This book should give hope to everyone that has "come to the end of themselves ". Jake and Kate feel they have lost everything...or did they really never have anything in the first place? It is truly a message of hope and encouragement to anyone who has hit "rock bottom". God is always there and always wants the best for His children. This book reveals that a person can never get so low that God cannot raise them up! I would highly recommend this book!!!

Jennifer Rodewald’s will have you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens in this wonderful story. You will read about how secrets, lies and godly people can change your life. Kate is a amazing young woman. When she meets Bryce and sees his skoolie she knows she has to have it. Jacob is struggling to figure out what to do next in his messed up life. When these two start their Boondocking life everything changes. You will feel God working throughout this wonderful story. I would give this book a higher rating than a five star review if I could.

This is a *Must Read* book!! It is full of emotions and you can feel every one of them. Sometimes people have to lose everything and hit rock bottom before they realize what's really important in life. A beautiful story of God's redemption, grace and love. "Losing everything is the best worst thing." Kate can say that because it happened. She and Jacob learned so much about what is really important in life. I think this should be turned into a movie! It can be seen in this book how spouses can become so insecure that every gesture can be used to jump to conclusions. Lord, help us to love despite those "conclusions." Very well done!

I was definitely excited to get Jacob and Kate’s story, if a bit wary. Already married couples aren’t normally the romances I choose to read, but from an already loved author, I do it. This one was surprising and unexpected and there were definitely tears and heart pangs. It really reached the core of me.

I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Oh wow! Does Ms Rodewald knock this outta the park! I’ve always adored the Murphy families and Kate and Jacobs story is no exception! Not only grew to love these two characters but grew with them in their walk with God as my walk became stronger for it. Through very difficult times to times of great adventure. A story of Hope, second chances and the love our Father instills into every marriage. This has become my favorite of the set. I received a copy of this from the author and these thoughts are my own.
