Идеална за всички възрасти – за децата, когато дойде моментът за разговор по “онези” теми, а за възрастните, защото информацията е интересна, любопитна, обогатяваща и добре поднесена. Не е заместител на така нужното сексуално образование в училище, но много добре обхваща теми, които са естествени в животинския свят (и които не се приемат толкова ентусиазирано в човешкия) – еднополовите семейства, хомосексуалните връзки, активната бащинска роля, равноправното партньорство – да, всички тези неща се срещат при животните. Със сигурност ще откриете поне едно нещо, което ще ви изненада, шокира и възхити на всеки етап от интимния свят на животните – ухажване, копулация, раждане и отглеждане на малките.

Csucsorka írta egy értékelésében nemrég: "Sokszor gondolok arra, hogy ahhoz, hogy megértsük testünk végtelenül bonyolult működését, igazából gyerekkönyveket kéne olvasnunk."
Én meg most akkor hozzáteszem azt is, hogy az állatok testének működésére is igaz ez a tétel.
Vannak bizonyos témák, amik érdekelnek, de nem annyira, hogy egy tudományos értekezés szintjén beleállasam magam. Ilyenkor jön jól a szórakoztató ismeretterjesztés.
Az állatok és a szex két olyan téma, ami különösen érdekel, csak épp általában nem ilyen kombóban. :P Ez a könyv viszont egy egészen új világot villantot fel előttem, és ez nem a bestialitás világa. (Bocs, de azért ezt jobb tisztázni, a miheztartás végett.) Eddig bele se gondoltam, hogy az amúgy rendkívül színes állatvilág bizony a szaporodás szintjén is egészen gazdag. Az volt a fejemben, hogy vannak emlősök, elevenszülők, tojásrakók, ikrázók (vagy mi?), meg még pár kategória, oszt' ennyi.
De hát mennyire rétegzett ez még ezeken a kategóriákon belül is! Pedig nyilván vannak a klasszikus példák, amik mindenki eszébe juthatnak: a kenguru, aki "kétszer szüli meg" a magzatát, a kakukk, aki lepasszolja a tojást másnak, a kacsacsőrű emlős, a rovarok, akik párzás után megeszik a hímet stb. Ők mind benne is vannak a könyvben, és még sok más példa.
A kötet három nagy részre van felosztva: udvarlás, párzás és utódnemzés/nevelés. Mindegyik rész alfejezetekre van osztva, így a rendkívüli diverzitáson túl jó kis közös kategóriákban kapjuk meg a hasonlóságokat is. Rövidke kis részek mutatják be egyes állatok fura szokásait, amikből kirajzolódik ez a sokszínűség. Én nagyon jól szórakoztam az illusztrációkon, amik megugorják azt a nem is annyira egyszerűen megugorható célt, hogy egyszerre viccesek és informatívak.
A könyvben három nagy kihajtható oldal található, a három nagy témánkhoz kapcsolódva.
A "pompás puncik" és "parádés hímvesszők" rész még akkor is kissé lesokkolt, ha nem tartom magam egy pirulós típusnak. Van itt minden, formában, méretben, funkcióban, mennyiségben. Igazából nem is annyira sokkoló ez, mint inkább hallatlanul érdekes. Talán ez volt a leginkább szemfelnyitó rész, amikor rádöbbentem, az állatok mennyire máshogy is vannak bekötve, mint mi.

Nahát, hogy mennyire sokszínű és változatos az állatvilág, az sejthető persze, hiszen külön tévécsatornák szakosodnak az állati viselkedés akciódús dokumentálására. Viszont egész más, ha egy jól összeszedett összehasonlító anyagból tudunk meg minél többet egy szűkebb területről. Ebben az esetben az állatok párkeresési, párosodási és utódnevelési szokásairól.
A téma persze belegabalyodik az emberi szexualitásba is, hiszen ugyanazon a nyelven beszélünk erről is, arról is. Szerencsére von der Gathen, és az őt magyarra fordító Győri Hanna is teljesen eltalálja a tárgyilagos, de nem száraz, nem unalmas, hanem érthető és köznyelvi, sőt, játékos (de nem gügyögő) nyelvezetet, amivel leírható mindaz a nagyon változatos fizikális és viselkedésbeli jelenség, amit a bolygó állatai összehoznak, ha éppen rájuk jön a szaporodhatnék.
És micsoda kompendium! Vagyis bestiárium. Nincs emberi szerzemény vagy fantázia, ami közelébe érne a bioszféra sokszázmillió évnyi fejlesztéseinek (nem mintha ne próbálkoznánk), itt tényleg minden van, a legnyálasabb tinirománctól kezdve a legváltozatosabb habitusokon át egészen a hardcore szadi-mazo horrorig. Ahogy a könyv hátlapján áll: "Botrány? Nem. Ez csak biológia."
Az illusztrált könyv pedig igazi telitalálat, sokkal jobban meg lehet fogni a helyzet emberi párhuzamait és iróniáját a humoros, szituációs alapon antropomorfizáló kis kiszólásokkal - ugyanakkor biológiailag korrekt rajzok kerülnek elénk kivétel nélkül, sok sok információval. Humanizálni szokott az ember, pláne gyerekkorában - szerintem nagyon jól eltalálja azt is a könyv, hogy ezt hogyan kell beépíteni a tudományos ismeretterjesztésbe.
Fordított irányból nézve arra is rámutat ez a könyv, még ha nyilván nem is ez a szándéka, hogy mennyire felkészületlen a felnőtt olvasó, nem csak az állatok szerelmi élete terén, hanem egyáltalán: a szexualitás szabatos, tárgyilagos, tudományos igényű tárgyalásában. Jó nagy hiányt pótol ez a könyv, és időtálló, szórakoztató olvasmány felnőtteknek is.

This books title says it all! This is a book filled with all different species of animals and how they mate. From the humpback whale males that sing songs into the water to find a mate, or kangaroos that fight each other to be able to mate with a female. Each specie is talked about how they reproduce. This would be good for a helpful add on to teaching about reproduction in living things. There are some graphic illustrations and so I would use this as a read aloud or extra things you don't know, to talk to students or your own children about. This might even be a middle/high school book to use.

This book was written in response to questions children ask about sex, such as: Do animals have sex? Can they be gay? Do spiders have babies? It is a very browsable book about the way animals compete for mates, how they have sex, and how babies get launched into the world. Many different species, including the tiniest insects, to mammals, invertebrates, and fish, are covered, including many unusual animals you may never have heard of. It’s impressive that so much is covered, including genitalia comparisons, mating positions, masturbation and animals who prefer same sex partners.
Readers will enjoy the informative yet sometimes really slyly humorous writing, and the great cartoon like realistic art. Color panels and black and white diagrams are embellished with funny speech bubbles and expressive eyebrows. At times I cringed a little bit in reading chapter sub-headings such as “Bungee Sex” (how slugs do it), or laughed to learn that bonobos “do it with everyone” or that panda sex life is “lustless.” It was fascinating to learn that slugs’ penises grow out of their heads, and that some animals get periods like humans. Two page spreads offer fascinating comparisons, such as “Ingenious Genitalia: Vulvas, Vaginas and more” and “Teats and Udders,” which show mammary glands from various mammals. At the end of the section on sex and affection with same-sex partners, there is a fun parade of animals holding a rainbow flag!
Another reviewer termed this book “carnal knowledge for middle school readers” (Kirkus Reviews), which is pretty accurate. The book is translated from the German, and it is a good one.

Oh, wow, wat een geweldig boek. Boeiend onderwerp, vlot geschreven, toffe tekeningen én uitklappagina’s. Een boek om verliefd op te worden, hoe oud je ook bent. Wie wil er nu niet lezen over de blauwe piemels van naaktslakken, de eeuwige trouw van bevers of de zelfbevrediging van de kraagbeer?
In bij de beesten af staat alles over het liefdesleven van kleine en grote beestjes: wat ze doen als ze verliefd zijn, hoe ze paren, hoe hun geslachtsdelen er uit zien, welke soort eitjes er zijn, de geboorte van baby’s, hoe ze als familie samen leven (of niet) en hoe ze hun nestjes bouwen.
Woord en beeld vullen elkaar perfect aan. Soms verfraaien de tekeningen gewoon de pagina’s, dan weer zijn het kleine mopjes, vaak verduidelijken ze de tekst. Op de uitklappagina’s neemt het beeld zelfs de overhand met bijvoorbeeld een overzicht van verschillende dieren en hun unieke piemels.
Soms grappig, soms een beetje eng, vaak heel plastisch maar nooit té. Bij de beesten af is een heel leerrijk boek, dat geen onderwerp schuwt en maakt dat je nieuwe kennis vol goesting tot je neemt. Een genot om te lezen en een boek om te delen. Iedereen gaat hier van houden!

Although there isn't a whole lot about love in this forthright book, originally published in Germany, what readers will find is a collection of anecdotes about the sex lives of animals. This includes how various species attract mates, how they have sex, and then how they reproduce and care for their young. Readers will surely be fascinated by the discussion of the sizes of genitalia and how frequently or infrequently some creatures mate as well as how violent the sex act is in some cases. It would be impossible to choose one section that is more intriguing than the others, but readers will finish this book with an entirely new perspective on the birds and the bees. And pity the poor tenrec, which typically gives birth to 32 offspring at a time. Or the male antechinus, so bent on mating with as many females as possible as frequently as possible that they forget to eat and waste away, exhausted from their labors. Kudos for the author for including species in which same-sex affection has been observed. Each of the animals featured here is accompanied by a colorful illustration that leaves little to the imagination.

Ickiest and unexpectedly unsatisfying book on animal sex I have come across.
Why? How can this be? What's not to love (as it were)?
My theory: the art is super fun. The speech balloons are perky and glib. The text both supports the art, but barely gives you any more than you sort of get by looking at the pictures. Which is what you want to do! The text feels like it's there to make it all official. But I think this book wants to be a pure picture book: vaginas and penises and teats and fetuses. Caption it up and let me stare.
Also: maybe it's not a book to be "read" as such, but one to open to a page and be amazed. Our careless, casual, difficult ways of being super physical.
Feels like this book (because of the captions and simplified text) wants to be for "children" -- but why? Adults wanna know all this, too. And we don't need cuteness. (I would argue neither do kids.)

This is a non-fiction book for children. I'm obviously a grown-up, but I'm fascinated by anything having to do with animals. I don't have kids so I can't say much about the target reader but the illustrations, gorgeous as they are, may be a little too explicit for the smaller tikes. The facts are very interesting and the collection of species wide-ranging, from insects, to mammals, to fish... everybody is represented. The illustrations are funny but seem accurate, and not being photographs make everything more palatable.

Keegi päriselt ütema ei tulnud "Sa loed seda raamatut??? Päriselt ka või?!!" aga ma lihtsalt ei jaga väga seda, mis raamatud mul pooleli on. Samas ma kujutan ette, et sellise reaktsiooni võiks päris vabalt saada, eriti kui avada "geniaalsed genitaalid" leheküljed. Iseenesest on see päris põnev ja huvitav raamat. Kui ikka tahad teada, kuidas pardid ja lutikad ja sead ja teisedki loomad järglasi saavad, siis palun väga - kõik info ühest kohast. Illustratsioonid on ka täitsa vinged.

Stunning, funny, smart, so candid. Outstanding illustrations. I've rarely enjoyed a work of science non-fiction as much. Will not run out of good things to say about this book. Not sure if it's entirely suitable for children but my science teachers refused to talk about sex and reproduction in class altogether, so my conditioning might be showing.

This is a very extensive book about the sexual relations of different animals, insects and reptiles. I really loved all the illustrations. Some were humorous and some had the wow factor. The book is very informative sometimes even shocking. I am amazed at all the different ways creatures attract the opposite sex and how they copulate. I highly recommend this book. Thanks #netgalley for the advanced reader copy. I loved it.

A fascinating book about animal reproduction, inspired by children's questions. The topics include things like attracting a mate, frequency and methods of mating, and pregnancy and childbirth. While the illustrations are cartoonish, they don't shy away from depicting the facts, of which there are many. This is easy to browse, skim, and enjoy all at once or piecemeal, and full of frankly amazing information.

Se fossi un animale, vorrei essere un bonobo. I bonobo sono scimmie antropomorfe pacifiche e rilassate. E questo perché fanno sesso in continuazione. E quando nascono delle dispute per il cibo o attriti di altro genere, stemperano la rabbia con il piacere fisico. Insomma, fare l'amore è molto meglio che litigare. Chiamateli scemi. 🐒

Moim zdaniem tę książkę powinno dostać każde dziecko. Dlaczego? Bo to nie tylko bardzo mądra i ciekawa pozycja, ale przede wszystkim niebywała pomoc w edukacji seksualnej dzieci. Polecam!

Inspired by many questions by kids, this book is collection of interesting facts about animal reproduction. The illustrations are nice and funny. There are places where the descriptions are a bit graphic (even for adults) and violent, those sections are marked with a caution.
Inspired by many questions by kids, this book is collection of interesting facts about animal reproduction. The illustrations are nice and funny. There are places where the descriptions are a bit graphic (even for adults) and violent, those sections are marked with a caution.

Hat mir sehr gefallen. Für Eltern, die mit uhren Kids offen über alles reden ist es perfekt. sehr gut gemalt vor allem. Mit einer leichten Note von Humor und Satire. Auch die Auswahl der Tiere finde ich gelungen. Als Geschenk auch empfehlenswert. Tolles Buch.

This was a really interesting book, and answered a lot of questions I didn't realize I had. Maybe I'm a bit of a prude, but I can't imagine putting it in my public library just yet. Maybe I need to contemplate that a bit.

This books was absolutely fascinating! I learned so much about the animal and insect world. The illustrations are just lovely and really make the book. Information is in short, digestible chunks and this book would be fun to have in a science class.

Exceedingly factual, funny, and full of graphic detail. There is not room for misunderstanding in this comprehensive guide to every kind of animal love imaginable. And I bet most of you had no idea how many vaginas a koala has. Fascinating and illuminating stuff indeed.

Fascinating (and frank!) information on mating, covering a wide variety of animals. Colorful cartoon images are instructive but also humorous and appealing. Ages 8+

當孩子到可以接受sex education的年紀，這本書可以是很好的切入。動物世界千奇百怪的求偶育兒，甚至各種性器官，非常直接但又很風趣。很多facts我也是第一次知道。
