Jon's Mysteries #3

Jon's Spooky Corpse Conundrum

Rate this book
I've investigated some pretty strange cases in my life, but I have to say this is a first. A corpse-a murder victim-has gone missing during the middle of an investigation, and no one has any clue where it went. Psy is called in to clear the investigative team, make sure they're not an accomplice. It's a four hour drive outside of Nashville, to a place famous for being haunted, so none of us are particularly eager to go. And then we arrive on scene and I see who we're dealing with and I want nothing more than to turn around and go right back to Nashville. This case is complicated and strange, and absolutely nothing is as it seems at first glance. Even with my eyes, it's going to take some digging to get to the truth. Tags: haunted house, disappearing corpses, not in a zombie way, Donovan doesn't do ghosts, family drama, because families are complicated, muuuuurder, bareback sex, terrible parenting, Donovan puts up with a lot to say the least, developing relationship, Garrett's a good bro, sometimes, yeeeeeeeeeeeeees, FINALLY, healthy life choices, possibly wrong forensics, I don't even know, I tried, no ghosts were harmed in the making of this story, supernatural elements, the author regrets nothing

Oh man! Disappointing! I thought things were looking up for this series after the last book was so much better than the first one. I was wrong. So wrong.

Wrong Level: Christine

The author didn't fix the problem with dual POV's that sounded exactly alike. If anything, it was worse in this one because I actually had to remind myself who was narrating a few times in this one. There is no change in tone, language, syntax, anything! The only way to know which one of them is narrating is when you read the other person's name as a third person.

Then, everything else I complained about in the first book came back in this one.

I absolutely adore these two! We've got a case of a missing corpse and an unexpected surprise. Jon comes face to face with someone who's been missing and it's sad to hear their story as to why they've been missing. I was glad it all worked out. Plus, we get rid of two certain douche bags. Just fabulous!

Now I can't wait for Sho & Garrett's story. Plus, I want to see more of Caleb & Neil. I hope they show up more.

This was more fun than book 2, but it still doesn’t compare to book 1, imo.

I still love Jon and Donovan, and it was gratifying to see how their relationship grows from the honeymoon stage into something very solid and steady (and they’re still pretty hot together, too!)

I said it before, but I’d hate to have Jon’s psychic powers. I really do NOT want to have the ability to see someone’s darkest secrets and hidden feelings. Yikes, that’s not only burdening and horrifying, but also very much an infringement on someone’s privacy.

It was interesting to hear that Donovan has found a way to keep secrets from Jon, and I would have loved to find out more about that, but unfortunately this remains just a throw-away comment. Maybe in the next book?
I’m happy though that some hurtful issues from Jon’s past are resolved.

While the case was quite interesting, the solution felt a bit underwhelming and ‘easy’. I didn’t really sit at the edge of my seat to see whodunnit, that's for sure.

This was a pleasant, no-angst read (maybe I missed a teeny bit of that?) in a universe I’m happy to be in, and I will certainly return for book 4.

There was honestly so much to unpack in this book. The love, the tears, the murder and the missing dead body, the lost parents and freedom from the toxic lover- Rodger, (FINALLY). The start of two new relationships and the cementing of old ones

Ok this is basically gonna be a ramble about my feelings. Jon gets reconnected with his father, Caleb in this book and trust me, initially I was dreading the scene so much, but Caleb was the exact opposite of Rodger! I'm sure I'm not the only one who's contemplated slapping Roger through the pages but Caleb and his husband Nick are an absolute dream. They love Jon and Donovan, wanna reconnect with the rest of the family and actually be parents to Jon and his sister. Sky too gets a new set of grandparents she loves and with Rodger being botted off, everything is right in the world.

Lauren though loses her anchor, but with Alani stepping in, being a new friend, I sense a new bonding and anchor in the air. :D

Donovan and Garrett take care of Sho's ex who had been stalking out their crime scene, giving quite a scare to Donovan, who's horribly afraid of ghosts (I knew he was bestie material), cementing the start of my ship. Sho and Garrett, my sweet, lovely, talented and funny babies.

This case, too, was a head scratcher but trust in Jon to deliver. Even with a initially missing and later half burnt dead body, an onging petition and ghost scares, Jon delivers the resolution to not one but two murders, finally getting the case solved and going back home with Donovan.

Overall this book was all the feels and I loved every single moment of it! And I'll drink to the cutting off of all toxicity.

This is the third book in the adventures of Jon the psychic, Don the giant (not really), and their families and friends, and it doesn't disappoint! Once again the book is extremely well written and deals with issues in a caring and witty way. Highly recommend this series to lovers of m/m paranormal mystery and I'm looking forward to the next book!

These books just keep getting better & better!

This author is a wizard in balancing the sexy stuff, the humor the suspense and all the feels. They made me ugly cry multiple times, giggle a bunch of other times and sitting on the edge of my seat throughout! IMO this book is golden!

“Even you can be a corpse thief. Just visit your local haunted mansion to audition!”

I found myself back in the Donovan and Jon adventure, this time in a “haunted” mansion. It’s the first time I heard that there are actually ghosts in this world which is pretty interesting and I think I would love to see a paranormal adventure with the Psy gang. Anyways we had a whole lot of drama that ended up being rather easy to fix, even if it did cause some tears and headaches on their end. Once again when it comes to these books they are a pretty fun time. Just vibes with low stakes, which is why I always find myself stuck in the 4 star zone with these books. Because once again Donovan is too perfect and all the drama doesn’t really have any drama if you know what I mean? Everything just works out perfectly fine and smooth so I never feel any sort of emotional connection to the situation or find myself that deep in the mystery or drama. But I’m definitely not saying these are bad books, far from it. They are totally a fun time with some pretty good spice. They are low stakes mysteries that you can turn your brain off and just vibe out. It’s a good time all around.

I loved the first book but was quite bored with the second one. I was glad I liked this one better. But I do have to say that I still felt that there is so much untapped potential in these books.

There is something that bothers me in this series. I noticed in the second book that there was a lot of fuss being made of something that ended up being very boring. But I felt like I was constantly told how much of a big deal it was so I had to feel that way (spoiler, I didn’t).

The same thing happened here. I was constantly told how crazy weird this case was and how strange it was that the body went missing and then was found again. Of course it was weird, but it wasn’t like they just witnessed a ghost levitating the body somewhere else. Now that would have been weird. This was just a killer trying to cover his tracks. But everyone kept saying how incredibly weird it was. Yeah yeah yeah, I got it the first time someone mentioned it.

And when they found the killer, it was all so obvious and cut and dry. It took them a while to figure out who did it, but other than that this was just so easy. The arrest, the questioning, everything went according to plan, no surprises anywhere. At least throw in a surprise motive Jon has to discover with his psychic powers or something.

There still is a sweetness to these stories and I do like Jon and Donovan (even though there was almost no romance in this). I just wish the cases were more interesting. Especially with Jon’s ability. It could be so good.

The narrator isn't good. I don't think i am a fan of Lloyd Thomas lol, he does the weird word emphasizing that John Solo does. Although i am hit or miss with John Solo, i am more miss with Lloyd Thomas haha.

I do think that this is my favorite of the series so far. not the same conversations over and over, and we got to meet Jon's dad. I do wish Garrett and Sho had their own book, but its nice to see them in Jon and Don's book!

Overall a good addition to the series, and i am excited to see if Greg B/Greg T narrates Mack's books because that would be a dream!

3.5-4 stars: November 2020
I love this series, Jon and Don are the best and I love their banter and just everything! I just wish these stories were longer.

I love how Don is scared of ghost that literally made my day! Ugh this series! Definitely Hitman's Guide vibes for sure!

I also am hoping to see more Garrett and Sho (maybe they get their own books???!!!!)

I am excited to see what Brandon (Don's brother) has in store for us!

Another wonderful addition to the series! Jon finally has settled into the relationship with Donovan, and whatever doubts he had before are now gone. So, when the unusual case takes them out of town, Jon never expects to find the answers to his past and change his family forever. I loved the family drama. It was very emotional and highly entertaining.

The case while still depended on Jon's psychic abilities did require some police work. And while working on it, Jon has uncovered evidence of a long forgotten cold case and was able to give justice to the victim's family. I love when that happens! This book was funny, slightly angsty, emotional and full of teasing banter. All the characters were approachable and very likable. I enjoyed this light-hearted mystery.

IN continuing the trend I foresaw in the last book, this one was even worse than book 2. :(

The author continued with the dual POVs, which were hardly distinguishable from one another, and continue to make me care less and less about the pairing. I generally enjoy Jon's POV still, but Donovan is so dull and lacking any distinguishing characteristics from Jon's, which is a massive disappointment.

The case was... dull. Which might partly because I just recently read a Lanyon book with a similar concept about a "haunted" mansion and compared to that plot, this just didn't hold a candle.

And then we get the personal developments... which, I was, at first, excited to be introduced to Jon's father and get into some of that familial drama, but the way it unfolded was a little too family special and the notes were all wrong. Way too neat and convenient to get rid of the evil step-dad, and the way everybody becomes happy families just didn't feel authentic at ALL. This father hasn't reconnected with any of his family in nearly two decades, which okay fine, I can kind of buy given his struggles to accept his sexuality, but then mere DAYS after reconnecting with his son, they have this exchange, where the father tells Jon, after the man who is now the father's husband:

"...He’s incredibly sexy at a crime scene. He just oozes alpha dominance and confidence.”

OMG I vomitted into my mouth. What? NO. This is not a sentence an estranged father says to the son he hasn't seen in two decades in part because he was deeply ashamed of his sexuality and though said son was a homophobe! And then Jon/everybody kept referring to Neil, Jon's dad's husband, AS THEIR OTHER FATHER. I feel like this author has no experience with being an adult and having your parents date/remarry. My mom's boyfriend is great. In no way is he "my other dad". He didn't fucking raise me, and Jon met this dude TWO DAYS AGO. His dad barely gets the title, let alone this fucking random. It was so weird to me. Especially when Neil's parents also want to be GRANDPARENTS TO JON. I cannot stress how weird this is in a normal situation, let alone one in which Jon has literally not spoken to his dad in well over a decade, and this is all happening like a week after reconnecting.

Also lots of Garrett and Sho, and like, cute I guess? But they're not the main pairing, I don't care that much. Give them their own book if you want to tell their story.

I know there were things I enjoyed about this one, but man, just typing this all up made me so fucking annoyed. I can't remember if I've ever had a series start SO promising and then nosedive so quickly, and it's a real bummer. I'll probably read the next book since it's the last one published in the series so far, but I got to say, I don't have high hopes.

I could read about Jon and Donovan and their group of friends, family, and co-workers for a very, very long time.

I just love how they are together, how supportive and wonderful they all are. I love Donovan and Garrett's friendship. I love Garrett trying to woo Sho, I LOVED Jon's reunion with some family members, including some new ones. And I love how much Jon and Donovan are getting in sync with each other, but still have some things that they are both working on.

I truly enjoy Jon and Donovan. I kinda want a wedding for the two of them. I know the author has said she doesn't feel finished with 3 stories, and I think we're getting something for Garrett and Sho this holiday, so I really do hope for more of this series in 2020!

I’ve investigated some pretty strange cases in my life, but I have to say this is a first. A corpse...a murder victim...has gone missing during the middle of an investigation, and no one has any clue where or how it went.
Psychic detective, Jonathan Bane and his bodyguard...lover...anchor... Donovan Havili are called to Nashville to the murder site at a haunted house. Neither Jon or Donovan or any of the others on the detective team are overly enthused about visiting the house where repeated unexplained spooky things have happened. Since Jon has the ability to "read" suspects and immediately tell if they are guilty or not, he very much in demand by the local police to lend his help.

Jon’s not so sure he wants to go through the after-effects of a psychic reading, they almost do him in every time, and he knows that the aftereffects of his abilities...that of being able to completely turn off anything electrical in the area, will be hard to deal with. Is all of that worth it even for the possibility of finding who murdered the new owner of the notorious house? Wait! Where's the body?

The new owner's very dead body has vanished just minutes of its having been discovered. In addition, there’s a good chance that one of the team is being stalked by a former lover. Or at least, that’s what the man claims even though he has no prove. This makes a bad situation even worse and freaks everyone out. Jon and Donovan are not "happy campers" about being away from home, and now they have to try to deal with the skepticism of some of the local police who think they are blundering onto their turf...while the "higher ups" in the police force just want Jon to quickly tell them who the killer is and go home.

There is some comic relief added to this plotline, like Donovan's mother who wants to supply everyone with her home cooking. She believes with her entire soul, that if a problem can’t be solved with Pacific Island "goodies", then it’s just insurmountable. This third book is another fun addition to the series. The cases they are called in to investigate are just crazy enough to be entertaining,

Another 5 stars! Totally in love with this series. After the second book, I was very much looking forward to that bit of development between our IT specialist and Macho man. And yes, I love how they developed. The case for this book was pretty interesting but felt like it could have been so much more. With that title and that blurb, I was expecting more hocus pocus (especially since it was tagged to have supernatural elements) and secret traps/gadgets. It was a bit disappointing how it turned out at the end and it was not adequately described on how the crime was executed. Love how the old stones were unturned and very proud of Jon's mother for making hard decisions to move on. The side characters were portrayed very much to be very selfless in here which was a bit blinding for me. This won't be my favorite book of my series but it was still entertaining nonetheless.

love it

I love A.J. Sherwoods work and I absolutely adore Jon and Donovan. and I loved, loved, LOVED, the first two books.
but although this one was a great read and a good addition, it was not on the same level as the others. but don't get me wrong ... normally this book would maybe get 5 stars but because of my expectations it got down to 4,5 stars.

nevertheless ... this is an absolutely recommended book!!!

the mystery is interesting and I loved to see that Donovan has also his little weaknesses ;)
maybe what I missed was the one on one time between these two. we don't see them so much together

can't wait to read the next book :)

I really love the world and the concept of this book and it was my favorite of the series so far. Jon and Donovan are great characters and the plot of this one was really interesting. Not only do we get the case of a missing corpse but an old cold case is thrown in as well. On top of that Jon is reunited with his father who he hasn't seen since he was a child. There was a great balance between all the different plot points with plenty of feels between Jon and Donovan. I really hope to see more books in this series.

I’m loving this series.not only do I love Donavan and Jon, but whole premise of the psychic police team. Of course I love the humor too! This book was a key family reunion and forgiveness, especially when the truth of the past comes out. Loved the mystery of both murders, and to find out Donavan’ Achilles heel is ghosts. Hah! We need more Garrett and Sho. I still want a book on Donavan’s brother with the FBI. And we have not seen the last of Roger, you can count on it!

Darum geht’s:

Keine Leiche, kein Mord?

Once again a book I've owned since it was out and I've just had sitting on my shelf has me wondering why I keep doing this, lol. Why didn't I read this sooner? I was missing out on another fantastic story from this author.

There's a lot happening in this instalment. A corpse that goes missing almost under everyone's nose. That's a mystery and a half already. Then there's other stuff happening on a more personal level, but I won't spoil anything for anyone, so I'm not telling what. You'll just have to read this book for yourself.

To be able to really enjoy this book, I feel you do need to have read the previous instalments. While each book deals with a particular mystery that does get solved in each instalment, the overlying relationship arc between Jon and Donovan, as well as their colleagues and families continues to build and grow. If you miss out on one, I don't think you'll get the whole experience.

The upside of having left it so long to read this is that there are already several more books in this series. So guess what I'm reading next... *grin*
