Heroes of Port Dale #7

Where There’s Smoke…

Rate this book
Matt:I’m proud to be a Port Dale firefighter but it isn’t all excitement and sitting around eating homemade meals. It’s also dealing with your work “family” in ways you never expected. I love my real family, and I love my work “family”. Well, most of them. My “brothers” at the fire station are exactly what I need at work, but I wasn’t expecting to be asked out by my homophobic “brother’s” actual brother. I also wasn’t expecting how well it would work out or where it would lead us. I certainly didn’t expect we’d get caught.

Ethan: Tossed out by the Corps on medical grounds, I have no idea what to expect from civilian life. I’ve got my brother Keith, who’s been everything, brother, friend, parent. Yet when I stumble across his fellow firefighter, Matt, I find myself in a whole new world. Matt is sweet, kind, and forgiving, everything my brother is not, especially when it comes to being gay. Matt is hot. He’s everything I need, and I know I can’t hide my true self forever.

For Matt and Ethan there’s fiery instant attraction but can they get over family hurdles? When gay-hating Keith catches them kissing at work, sparks fly! Can the fire between them be rekindled or is it dead forever?

Back to the fire station we go

Ooh this one was a mixed bag of loveliness and really horrible behaviour from a side character all wrapped up together.

Still, I think the author actually did a good job in going into the background of why one person behaved as they did while still not excusing it.

Matt and Ethan were super cute and I loved the interactions between them. Matt's dad also added another interesting dimension and the Easter Egg appearance from Theo was fun.

Matt has been on the job for several years. He has friends there and one "not so much a friend". Fellow firefighter, Keith, who hates gay men. He has always made life difficult for Matt. The story brings us back to the firehouse where resident homophobe, Keith, is busy spreading his own kind of "cheer" and seems to be blaming Matt for every gay human being in the world.

Keith's younger brother, Ethan, is completely different, the exact opposite of Keith, thank goodness... and we soon learn that he is also gay... but Keith doesn't know it. Matt has been quietly out to the guys at the station, for years....and he has more than once, been the brunt of Keith's bigotry. I have always liked Matt, who is sweet, helpful, cheerful and always very positive. You knew it was going to happen...Ethan and Matt are attracted to each other in spite of Keith. Elias and Cade are also there lending support and surprisingly, so was Keith's best friend, Davis.

Matt's dad, Calvin, is back and has a major part in this story also. You absolutely have to love him. Ethan is so open and honest with him. I also loved the way Ethan stood up for himself and Matt. I expected 'fireworks" to explode long before it actually happened...but it couldn't have been any better when it did! Good job Mr. Alexander!!!

All this wonderful series could be read in any order, but to get the full experience they are best read in order. This is book #7, so if you are just starting out, you have many wonderful stories to help you meet the firefighters of Port Dale.

I loved returning to Port Dale's fire station and being reunited with Elias and Cade and seeing that they are still going strong. It was great to remeet Matt and see him find his love. Keith certainly hasn't had any personal growth during the time that has passed since the first book, and he was pretty unlikeable, with his bigoted views on gay people. I loved his brother Ethan and really enjoyed getting to know him and seeing his interactions with Matt and their growing relationship. This was a great addition to the Heroes of Port Dale series.

What do police, firefighters, and Marines have in common?

Boyfriends are essential for some men. Their demanding jobs and dangerous working conditions make family life and marriage an extra challenge, but it seems to work better when your life is based on eating, sleeping, and working.

Do policemen hunt, Marines eat seafood, and firefighters smoke and grill their meat? At least as often as they get together to party with friends and family.

Ethan and Matt’s story, though low angst, is full of meaning and feelings. The fact that two grown man have to sort of sneak behind Ethan’s homophobic brother bugged me to no end, especially because said brother,Keith, acted like a jerk for a very petty reason.
Anyway, the story is sweet and steamy, and very entertaining to listen to!

Matt was exhausted he'd pushed himself to his limits and beyond and he was looking forward to the weekend.
For the most part he did enjoy his job even dug some of the guys he worked with however some or make that one had some very curious and weird misconceptions about his life style and he really harbored some serious feelings.
His last relationship ended because his ex-boyfriend had been a little to free loving for his taste.
Ethan kept having to remind himself that his old life was over and that he no longer had to follow certain requirements but some routines are hard to forget.
He'd been looking forward to seeing his big brother again he'd even promised to show him where he worked.
But his brother could kill any good mood with his sour attitude the more he talked the less I wanted to hear.
Now meeting the guys my brother worked with was quite interesting and so we're their stories.
Matt couldn't believe how different the two brothers were Ethan definitely didn't have the jerk gene unlike his unyielding older brother.
Wow he most have heard him wrong not once in a million years did ever expect someone like Ethan to ask him out. No he honestly thought he was hearing things.
Nervous didn't even begin to explain how he was feeling; no give him rebels, insurgents and dissidents with no problem but an honest to God date left him sweating bullets.
Yeah he was totally out of his element and the fact he didn't want to play twenty questions with his brother as he went out the door.
Matt was a wonderful never ending bubble of optimism even how he handled being around his exasperating brother.
Sometimes Matt added a little more spice to his fellow comrades mundane existence then he really should especially around heavy tools.
Ethan couldn't deny he enjoyed spending time with Matt he had all the kind of qualities he admired.
They should have been more careful but they'd thrown caution to the wind, rolled the dice and came up snake eyes.
Matt was so over that darn fool's irrational behavior and he showed him just how far he'd pushed him and when the dust settled he'd owe up to his misdeeds and take his medicine like a grown man.
Ethan wasn't what to do never been in situation like this he wasn't sure if he should wait? Or make a move?
Ethan wasn't going to wait anymore he needed to apologize and explain a few things because he wasn't willing to let anything get in his way.
Just like he knew he'd have to eventually face his brother with the 411 about himself.
Because he no intentions of changing anything.

I need a little ARC break, and I figured I might as well be productive about it (getting one step closer to crossing another author off my to-binge list). Here's "Where There's Smoke." It's the seventh (and final) book in Romeo Alexander's Heroes of Port Dale series.

["Matt I’m proud to be a Port Dale firefighter but it isn’t all excitement and sitting around eating homemade meals.

Can the fire between them be rekindled or is it dead forever?"]

This Ethan is NOT the Ethan mentioned in the Men of Fort Dale series (he was a bartender at Pulse (and kinda an ass--I mean, he did help in blackmailing General Winter)). This Ethan is also, apparently, not the Ethan mentioned in book five (though, there were two Ethans in book five--neither one this Ethan). Matt was mentioned in book one, and I was serrrrrrrriously hoping he'd get his own book (cute little shit he is).

ANYway, these two were cute as hell. I loved how just...enamored they both were from the start (though Ethan hid it better; Matt gets clumsy with a crush). They were so innocent in their love and loving in their lust.

Also, shout out to Theo for fulfilling the "stranger at a bar talking you through your woes and helping you get clarity" stereotype. Who knew you had it in you ;)

Trigger Warnings: homophobia, violence, and more

They are just perfect for each other
Matt has got a lot going on he is a fire fighter living in Port Dale but he’s also taking care of his father who was injured in a car accident that took the life of his mum. Leaving his dad with a brain injury. Every day is different with his dad thankfully he’s got great carers that comes in to give him a hand when he’s at work. He’s been single for two years now and it does get lonely for him thankfully The guys at the fire station are a family away from his family. He’s also got Cade and Elias to keep him sane. The only issue at work is Keith who is a homophobic with a bad attitude but he has been better since Elias threatened to put him on his backside if he heard one more bad word about his sexuality . So you can imagine his shock when Keith brings his brother who has just been discharged from the army to the fire station to meet them. Ethan is just his type.
Ethan was a marine but he had been injured which had left him with an injury to his hip and meant that he could no longer go on the front line so it was either sit at a desk or medical discharge and he picked discharge. So now he was moving back with his brother Keith. Keith was amazing he bought him up when his parents just were never there for them but the only issue they had was Ethan was gay but he couldn’t tell that to Keith because Keith was so against anyone who was gay. But when he walked into that fire station and he saw Matt all bets are off he had to ask him out.
Would they be a good match?? Would Ethan feel comfortable enough to talk to Keith about being gay?? Would Ethan be okay with Matt taking care of his father??
I absolutely adore this book, I could not read it fast enough. The storyline was just so good. What made it even better was that Matt and Ethan are just two amazing man who been through so much but still they’re happy to open up their hearts for each other, they are the perfect pair!!!!! They just gel so well but will that be enough?? These two are just made for each other! amazing! I am just enjoying this series so much. And I secretly hope Keith wakes up to himself and see what he is missing out on. I hope there is a book about Keith because that would blow my mind.

I really enjoyed this, although I feel like it's crazy the author waited until book SEVEN to give Matt his own book when he was so likeable in the first one. Yes I did skip the other books just to read Matt's story, what about it? XD

Getting to see Matt and Keith's brother Ethan fall in love was a real treat. Homophobia may suck in real life, but I can't say how much I enjoyed watching Keith squirm, get angry and depressed and finally come to some sort of grudging acceptance towards gay people through the whole seeing his brother kiss the guy he's hated at work forever. Ngl I always kinda thought Keith might be a self hating gay (and that him and Davis might hook up), but finding out the real reason was interesting. I was so worried in the early part of the book when htey hinted at his past being why he hated gays that it was going to be some m0lestation plot which I wasn't sure he'd ever get over it, but finding out the real reason was good. I'm glad he managed to come to understand his brother a bit better and still love him.

Speaking of Ethan he was cute and I liked how good of a person he was portrayed as. My one big gripe was that he mentions his hip being fucked as the reason he can't be in the army anymore, but he had no problems fucking Matt hard, and gets a job as a cop later, so it felt like a disconnect and wasn't really followed through for me. Either way he was a good character. I especially enjoyed his little talk with this Theo guy that I assume is from one of the books I skipped.

I really enjoyed how the blow up from Ethan/Matt/Keith incident was pretty realistic, with Keith continuing to be an ass, Matt taking a punishment to allow Keith to keep his job because he really is that good of a person while also thinking Ethan was mad at him, and Ethan thinking Matt was angry with him.

I also loved getting to see more of Cade and Elias, and they're engaged!!! That was so nice to see and I'm happy for them. Overall this was a good followup to the first Port Dale book and I enjoyed it a lot.

There's Fire, Indeed

This is another one of Romeo Alexander's somewhat linked sequels, this one a continuation of the fire station setting in "Two Straights Too Many." That was the first of the series in which Matt was an important supporting character because he was the only gay member of the fire crew--until Elias and Cade got together and created their own situation.

One of the other supporting roles in that book was the nastily homophobic Keith, whose brother Ethan has just been medically discharged by the Marines and has come to live with his brother while trying to sort out his post-military life.

That Keith has no idea his brother is gay is a central focus of the plot line of this one, and it leads to all sorts of complications when Ethan is introduced to the members of the fire station and falls head over lust with Matt--who does the same.

They start secretly dating except that Matt's father knows. He is a brilliant physicist who is now semi-disabled by a personality disorder caused by a car accident in which his wife was killed. He knows what's happening because the two spend time together at Matt's house after their first couple of dates and Matt's father strongly approves.

Of course, things are likely to get complicated if Keith finds out about his brother. Naturally, despite Matt and Ethan thinking they are hiding their relationship something goes wrong and the whole thing explodes into violence, misunderstandings and s truly shocking explanation of what turned Keith homophobic.

Once again Romeo Alexander gives us an illogical combination of characters and circumstances and manages to spin a tale of golden threads which enchants. Nicely done.

The series ended with a bang!

This is Heroes of Port Dale Book 7 and it's directly connected with Book 1 and Book 3.
Matt and Ethan's story was sweet and emotional, but also full of hate and homophobia.
Keith is a colleague firefighter, and he has always hated Matt just for his sexuality. Ethan is Keith's brother and when he sees Matt for the first time they're immediately attracted to each other. Later Ethan can't help wanting to date Matt after finding out how sweet and kind he also is.

But Keith doesn't know that Ethan is gay, it was just so sad knowing that Ethan had to hide a huge part of himself because he was afraid of losing his brother's love.

Ethan is a very good, generous, protective and caring man, and knowing how he loved and needed Keith in his life because they didn't have parents they deserved was heartbreaking.

But Matt was the one I was mostly sad for, he is a kind, sweet man who just wants to be himself. He lost his mum and he's taking care of his father. He really didn't deserve everything that he had to go through with Keith for years and everything that happens to him in this book too. Keith might have "reasons" he hates gay people but Matt has no responsibility in that and is just a victim of his hate.

However Matt and Ethan manage to have their deserved HEA and I loved the epilogue.
I'm really going to miss this series 😭

Content and Trigger Warnings:
-homophobia, hate and homophobic slurs
-assault, fist fight
-traumatic family backgrounds, parental death, abandonment, drugs abuse and death by overdose (all in the past)

Life changing love but only in the best sense.
Matt has two families, and he loves both: one at home with his aging father and the second is his fire fighter one. The conflict comes from when his fire fighter nemesis Keith's brother Ethan comes home from Afghanistan after being discharged because of medical injuries. Matt, the fire fighter, and Ethan, the soldier, connect instantaneously but both must be cautious. Matt is out but is a "quiet" gay man while Ethan is closeted mainly because of his brother Keith's unforgiven attitude toward all that is the gay world. Ethan must seek redemption for his feelings so he can have a life worth living honestly. The changes between these two men are slow and subtle but inevitable. Keith is the volatile character that lends is a very emotional and intense addition but by the end of this, me, the reader, does have sympathy for his growing up history with his dad. Of course, politics raises its ugly head at the workplace as a demonstration of any organizational operation.

Matt was a firefighter in Port Dale. He and Keith had a stormy situation because Matt was open about his preferences and Keith was strongly against it, making his negative feelings known whenever he had the chance. When Keith’s brother, Ethan, gets discharged from the military due to injuries he sustained, he and Matt immediately feel the chemistry, and Keith continues to give them grief. How can they make him understand? Will he ever be able to accept their relationship?

This was a good story line giving the reader some thought-provoking questions that are not always easy to answer. What does a person do when caught between a caring relationship and a family member’s anger? Ethan cared about both people in his life. Choosing one over the other would be devastating. Grab your copy and let the author take you through their emotional journey to see if there is any hope for not losing one over the other. When clouded by anger, it is difficult to process what you are doing to someone else and why. Sometimes the “why” can bring understanding and peace. This author’s books are always enjoyable, even through the rough spots.

This book is amazing!!!! We head back to Port Dale and this time it's Matt's turn to find love. Ethan has returned to Port Dale from the Marines to stay with his brother, Keith. The first time he meets Matt, he can't take his eyes off of him. There's only one little problem, Keith doesn't know Ethan is gay and Ethan knows Keith won't be happy when he finds out. Regardless of his brother's issues, Ethan asks Matt out for a date and the two hit it off right away. Matt lives at home, taking care of his father with a traumatic brain injury and Ethan is very kind and supportive about it, which just makes him more appealing to Matt. Things are going well until Keith catches them in a kiss at the station and all heck breaks loose! Matt will finally stand up for himself, he and Keith will get suspended and Ethan will finally stand up to his brother and make him understand that the sins of their father shouldn't be paid for by Ethan and Matt. Things will finally settle down a bit and Matt and Ethan will be able to take their relationship forward.

It would nice if we could have a say who our heart chooses, but that’s not the case. Some choices are easy, some are complicated. For Matt and Ethan...boy was it complicated. Remember the homophobic firefighter Elias, Cade, and Matt dealt with in book one? He’s Ethan’s brother, and still homophobic. To make it even more complicated, Ethan isn’t out to his brother. This is a time bomb just waiting to go off, but who will it take down in it’s wake?

I have thoroughly enjoyed this series. Each book is well written, full of characters with depth to them, and completely captivating; this book was no different.

I love how connected each book is to the others, yet how they, also, absolutely stand alone. Getting a glimpse of past characters makes it all the better. Obviously we were gonna see Elias and Cade again, as they work with Matt, but there was a surprise cameo that was perfectly timed, and very entertaining. I cannot recommend this series, and author, enough. I’m totally hooked, and can’t wait to see what they have in store for us next.

Men in uniform are hard to resist! Especially when they are kind and sweet.

Port Dale and the military post attached to the city are a couple of my favorite venues from Romeo Alexander. This story brings us back to the firehouse where resident homophobe, Keith, spreads his own type of "cheer" and blames Matt for all the gays in the world. Keith's little brother, Ethan, is completely different from Keith and gay himself (which Keith doesn't know). Matt has been quietly out to his firefighting brothers for years. He has been the brunt of Keith's bigotry from the beginning. Matt is sweet, helpful, cheerful and always positive. Keith and Matt are drawn to each other despite Keith. Elias and Care are there lending support and surprisingly, so his Keith's friend, Davis. I absolutely love Matt's dad, Calvin. Ethan was so open and honest with him he couldn't help but like Ethan. I also loved the way Ethan stood up for himself and Matt. It couldn't have been any better! All of these stories could be read by themselves, but to get the full experience they are best read in order.

Romeo Alexander has a perfect second to the Heroes of Port Dale #6. In this case, a homophobe firefighter who was a tormenter in the past book finds himself too close to what he is protesting.

The talent in telling stories like these is to feel the torment, and feel the consequences of that torment carried through. The angst comes through in Romeo Alexander's telling of this story of a former active duty Marine and the hard body firefighter who has a 'sweet' and 'caring' side.

There is no fake tropes just to build page count, but an understood embarrassment and angst after a major confrontation in the fire station. It's a Happy Ever After that is believable and liveable. The story, and the wise counsel from an unlikely source in a run-down neighborhood bar plots the end to this angst, and provides for the HEA.

Mr. Alexander's writing reminds me of Annabeth Albert excellent telling the stories of military men who like, or come to love, other men. His style mixes dialogue with the author's narrative to move the story along without dialogue that sounds too contrived, too structured to tell the story rather than to bring feeling into their words.

Wow!!...this was so awesome. I had so many emotions reading this story. One...it was nice seeing Cade and Elias back. Their friendship and love showed wonderfully throughout this...Two...Matt was a delight. His all around personality along with his father. I wish more people were like these genuinely decent humans the world would be a better place. I like how the author kept things real realistic between Matt, Keith and Ethan. Its not all fluffy and nice but it's getting better. The cameos of different characters(like Theo, the artist) in previous books was nice to see. So entertaining...Finally the real reason for this story...Matt and Ethan. Their romance was soooo sweet...other than the issues with Keith, there was hardly any angst. Just enjoyment of seeing two great people finding, getting to know and loving each other. I truly love this series and glad I get to read these wonderful stories of men falling in love.

This is a feel-good story. Matt loves being a fire fighter. He has to deal with his “work” family and his home family but that is just what he needs. He is not sure he needs to go out with his homophobic co-worker’s brother, but how could he resist. Ethan was discharged from the Marines for medical reasons and is now living with his brother, Keith. He enjoys going to fire station with him and helping out - and he particularly enjoys Matt. His brother does not know he is gay but that is not something you can hide forever. Sparks do indeed fly when Keith catches them and now they have to deal with the aftermath.

Families are complicated. There are those we form like our work families and those who are our blood families. It is also true that life is a balance and sometimes that balance tips the wrong way. Matt and Ethan have something good going they just need that balance back. Watching them do that made for fantastic reading. Find out for your self when you pick up this book.

Matt is a firefighter, an absolutely adorable guy who is so sweet and kind and he has such a huge heart. Ethan is just as great, a former Marine acclimating to civilian life and figuring out where he fits. There is an instant attraction between them that soon leads to a genuine connection and some steamy sexy times. They had vastly different experiences growing up and past trauma that has an effect on their actions and emotions today. Some angst filled situations arise that try to get in the way of their budding relationship but they work through it and become stronger, deepening their feelings and giving them a sweet HEA.
I loved the characters in this book - with the exception of a certain loud mouth - and it is filled with good lighthearted teasing, bittersweet moments, great friends, solid connections, a bit of violence, uncertainty, and a satisfying ending that will leave you smiling.
I would definitely recommend this book.

Matt is used to having to deal with Keith, his fellow firefighter's issues with his being gay. But he was not prepared to have to deal with Keith in his personal life when he starts not only seeing, but falls for Keith's actual brother, Ethan, when Ethan comes to live with Keith after he is medically discharged from the military. There are so many emotional issues in this story with Keith and Ethan being all the family each other has but also with the strong connection between Matt and Ethan being something real. It is wonderful how much support Matt gets from Cade and Elias, other fellow fire fighter, but having to continually struggle against a fellow co-worker who might have your life in his hands that is something. And to be connected to him through the man who is coming to mean a lot to you? I am really enjoying this series.

This a gripping love story filled with drama, romance and entertainment. Ethan has just left the Marines after a career ending injury and moved in with his brother, Keith, until he figures out what is next for him. Matt is a co-worker of Keith's, and the target of Keith's hatred of gay men. Ethan is highly aware of Matt the first time he goes to the firehouse to hang out, but does nothing more than talk to Matt for a while, then he asks Matt to go out on a date, which Matt agrees to. Both know it's a bad idea with the way Keith feels about Matt and gay men, but also because Keith doesn't know that Ethan is gay. But they go out and get along well, and Ethan is introduced to Matt's father, who has a brain injury so isn't always pleasant to be around, but he likes Ethan. Unfortunately, things aren't always easy for them, together or separately. But Matt is strong, forgiving and caring. And Ethan is sweet and strong.

Secrets always come out! Ethan was coming to stay with his brother Keith. He is military retired from the Marines. Keith is the older brother and Ethan felt Keith was equally Father and Brother. Keith made no secret that he wsa passionately homophobic. He had childhood baggage. Ethan was out to everyone but Keith. He feared, Keith's reaction. Matt was out and proud. He was out before Cade and Elias. His baggage was caring for his Dad, who suffered from TBI. Matt and Ethan are deeply attracted to each other when they first met. They carried their luggage right up to the decision of starting a relationship. These guys are absolutely relatable. The Firehouse team is wonderfully supportive. Can they find balance and acceptance? Matt's Dad, Calvin is an absolute peach! Well done. I received an ARC from Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

A great M/M romance with an easy, loving relationship

This is my third book from this author. I went in with high expectations and was pleased that this book was simply beyond expectations. I have always enjoyed stories where the two MCs are able to form a quick and easy bond from the beginning. This story is told from two point of views. We also meet characters from different books but it is suffice to say that you can read and enjoy this book without reading the other books before Where There's Smoke... If you are looking for a loving easy relationship story then look no further than here. Do note that there is 1 homophobic character but he does not spoil the story in any way. I certainly look forward to future books from this author.

Sometimes you have to go through the fire to get the gold. Seriously a very sweet but serious read. Matt had put up with so much from Keith that it was sad. He is such a sweet, kind hearted and totally forgiving kind of guy. I know he had a bad upbringing but goodness. Such hate is really unacceptable for any reason. Then here goes Ethan, Keith\s brother that falls for Matt from the first day they met. Their chemistry was immediate and their connection too. Crap hit the fan when Keith found Ethan and Matt kissing. I just hurt to see these two guys hurting so much because of one person's hate. But, they were able to go through and come out the stronger for it. I totally great book, just a lot of emotions.

Firefighter Matt is out and proud, much to the disgust of his bigoted coworker Keith. Their uneasy coexistence lasts until Matt meets Ethan, Kieth's little brother and quite possibly the man of Matt's dreams. I love Matt-- he was awesome in previous books and he's even better with a book of his own, where his snark, kindness, and inner strength all get a chance to shine through. Ethan's personality isn't quite so nuanced, but he's nice enough, and I liked his ability to accept and embrace everything about Matt, including his demanding job and his role as his father's primary caregiver. Ultimately, this was a very sweet romance.

Right from the beginning, Matt and Ethan have instant fiery chemistry and a truly genuine connection. This connection is written wonderfully and I didn’t struggle at all to become invested in Matt and Ethan finding their way to a HEA. It is not a smooth road though; there being quite a high amount of drama involved in the storyline before this can occur. As stated in the blurb, they have to deal with Ethan’s brother, Keith, and he certainly puts them through some deep hurt before it’s all resolved. Despite this conflict, the story is also quite heartwarming. I especially loved the camaraderie of the firehouse, as well as how the ending unfolded as Ethan confronted just brother and helped him accept the truth.
