SOME BONDS ARE MADE TO BE BROKEN. Kennir was once a first-rate assassin, but sometimes even experts get caught. Now he's bound by magic to serve the people he failed to kill, and he has no hope of ever taking revenge. But while Kennir was married--and with a daughter to boot--Ichigo used to be a fiery playboy. But at the end of the war between his country and Kennir's, something happened, and he's not the same. They're two people who never should have met, two players in different games. But when a criminal organization infiltrates the castle where Kennir works, the queen thinks her old friend Ichigo can root out the spy. Ichigo knows he's not qualified, but at least his new servant is HOT. Straight or not, Ichigo can't get enough of him. Which makes things a lot harder for Kennir. After all, Kennir's the spy. • • • Romance This book should appeal to fans of the fantasy romance genre, but may not adhere to all romance norms. Trigger This book is male/male erotic fantasy. I was sent a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. This is the first book by Scottie Kaye Iv'e read and I was really impressed. The story line was intense centering around the supposed murder of a queen by Kennir. He is under the impression that his daughter has been murdered by the King and he heads for revenge by taking something the King holds dear. In this story there are skinchangers, similar to shapeshifters except these beings can present as another person. Right through the story Kennir is fronted by skinchangers who now want him to murder the new queen. Ochigo, one of the queens'entourage watches Kennir and these two end up fighting their own demons with the assistance of the other. Kennir finds out that the reason his marriage to his wife didn't feel right is because he bends more toward men and that realization is very hard for him to come to grips with, but things progress in every area to a finale that I wasn't expecting. I will be looking for more books by Scottie Kaye
There's a lot to like about this novel: excellent world building that is interesting and detailed without being overwhelming. Complex characters. Excellent chemistry. Intrigue. The relationship between Ichigo and Kennir is good for both of them, but easy for neither. This was my first book by this author, and I will definitely be on the lookout for more.

I read this book and I loved it, I have not read any of the books in this series before and now I have to start at the beginning. The dynamics between the 2 warring factions is awesome. The covert ops was not expected but a very welcoming tactic. I was a little lost in the beginning because I haven't read any of the other books but this story line kind of made up for all the stuff that I didn't know that happened in the past books, the characters had enough memories that I was able to piece together what to expect in the beginning of the series. Most books say that they are stand alone but if you start in the middle of their series you will not understand most of what's going on, not here although I didn't get all the detail of reading the other books I was able to follow along with no problem.
Kennir Null, a highly-trained Soma assassin, failed twice at the same job, the assassination of Queen Yuki of Optic. She was pregnant and his pause gave her the opportunity of disarming him. And with a strange oath he was forced to utter, he became a slave. Yuki enjoyed tormenting him in every way she could. When she saw how lovingly she looked at her newborn son, she made sure to keep him around the baby. When she knew he would love to hold him, she never allowed that. He missed his own daughter who was certainly dead by now.
One night the Queen woke him and told him to follow her. She wanted their footsteps silenced, which his magic could do if he physically touched plant matter, in this case, the hardwood floors as he took off his boots. She led him through the grass of the garden rather than stone paths so that he could continue to silence their footsteps. She took him to a wooden door in the wall and through a passage that led to a room with mirrors all over the walls reflecting the moonlight to triple brightness. There was a tiny courtyard of grass with a single fruit tree growing in the middle. She told him there was a similar room as this in the Soma palace in his country. When Optic won the war, she would rule both. So she wanted to give Kennir a “gift”. To his surprise, she touched the manacles around his wrist and freed him! He started to squeeze her throat, to kill her for all the pain she had gladly caused him, but he wouldn’t take the baby Taiyo’s mother from him, so he loosened his hold. But instantly, a knife appeared in her throat and a woman looking identical to Queen Yuki stood behind her – a skinchanger! And she told him his daughter was still alive!
Although Kennir and Ichigo should never have met, a criminal organization infiltrates the castle, and the queen calls in her old friend Ichigo to find the spy. The interest that develops between Kennir and Ichigo makes for quite an awkward situation – because Kennir happens to be the spy.
There is so much going on in this book! I enjoyed the characters we meet and the world building that gives us the framework to process what is going on in the story. Where will it lead us next?
Kennir was sent to assassinate the Queen. Twice unsuccessful, he became her slave. Despite her torment of him, he did nothing but stare longingly at her newborn son while thinking of his own daughter he thinks is no deceased .
One night, the Queen sets him free, and while he wished to end her life right then and there, he didn't. To his surprise, another who was identical to the Queen, stood behind her - knife to her throat. It was a skinchanger who revealed to Kennir his daughter was still alive.
Ichigo and Kennir should have never met. This new set of unusual circumstance, have changed everything.
What will happen and can they allow this relationship to continue?
