Spring 2020 will forever be a uniquely bizarre period in American history. This novel covers those simple weeks between spring break and Memorial Day weekend, when some of our biggest concerns involved baking or dance challenges. It follows a diverse cast of characters as they navigate issues of mask etiquette, debate whose job is essential, and are forced to learn how to cook.
Despite what the title might suggest, this book contains zero instances of medical jargon. That's a promise!
A few years ago, the entire world came to a screeching halt at the onset of a global pandemic, in case you don’t remember. “Pandemic” follows the lives of maybe a couple dozen people as they try to survive and continue on, and yet, they all seem to converge by the end of the narrative. For one, several of them end up contracting the deadly virus because of their arrogance or religious ideology (maybe one in the same). And two, for different reasons, many of them end up in the same central location by the end of the story, a giant mansion built as a fortress of solitude in the woods that may also be a hub for human trafficking. If one thing is certain by the end of the story, it’s that in weird and uncertain times, people will do the strangest things.
Author Wesson Renick was trying to capture the “weirdness” of the early days of the pandemic and I’d say he hit his mark dead on. The story follows so many different people in so many different (and often weird) situations that it’s hard to keep track of them at times. The characters are quirky and all intriguing in their own ways and Renick weaves together their stories, connecting them at various points for the big conclusion. You can’t help but roll your eyes or laugh out loud at their ridiculousness at times. It was an entertaining read and though at times wholly absurd, after living through a similar situation, I can say not implausible by any means.
I could not stop reading this book until I finished it so I read it over the course of one day. I became more interested in what was going to happen next as the novel progressed. It was highly entertaining and addictive.
Well written timely book . Great character development with witty and tragic situations during the early months of the modern pandemic.I look forward to reading more books from this author.
