Rook and Ronin Spinoff #1-2

Ford: Slack / Taut

Rate this book
FORD: SLACK/TAUT IS A STANDALONE BUNDLE - you do NOT have to read any of the Rook and Ronin books first.
SLACK

Ford Aston is not too picky about what he wants out of Christmas. He's not into this holiday--like at all. He doesn't do presents, or family dinners, or parties, or church.
He does pets. And he's got one lined up for Christmas Eve. In fact, it's the highlight of his day. And if he can get through drop-in visits, nosy twelve year olds, an inappropriate conversation with his best friend's girlfriend, dinner with a family that's not his, and a party at his mother's house--well, he might just get home in time to enjoy himself with a stranger and make it all OK.
TAUT

Ford Aston is known for many things. Being an emotionless, messed up bastard, a freakishly smart social outcast, and a cold, domineering master who keeps "pets" instead of girlfriends.
And after Rook broke his heart, he plans to keep it that way.
Ashleigh is known for nothing, and that's exactly what she's got going for her. She's broke, stranded in the mountains with a three month old baby, and Ford Aston is screwing with her head.
Big. Time.
And she plans to mess with his right back.
It's a coy game at first, filled with flirting, and innuendo--but Ford soon realizes something is not quite right with Ashleigh. In fact, something is seriously, seriously wrong and the closer they get to their final destination, the closer Ford gets to the truth.

One night of devastation, self-loathing, and emptiness turns into the best thing that ever happened to Ford Aston. But one day of in-your-face reality threatens Ashleigh's whole existence.

J.A. Huss never wanted to be a writer and she still dreams of that elusive career as an astronaut. She originally went to school to become an equine veterinarian but soon figured out they keep horrible hours and decided to go to grad school instead. That Ph.D wasn’t all it was cracked up to be (and she really sucked at the whole scientist thing), so she dropped out and got a M.S. in forensic toxicology just to get the whole thing over with as soon as possible.

After graduation she got a job with the state of Colorado as their one and only hog farm inspector and spent her days wandering the Eastern Plains shooting the shit with farmers. After a few years of that, she got bored. And since she was a homeschool mom and actually does love science, she decided to write science textbooks and make online classes for other homeschool moms. She wrote more than two hundred of those workbooks and was the number one publisher at the online homeschool store many times, but eventually she covered every science topic she could think of and ran out of shit to say.

So in 2012 she decided to write fiction instead. That year she released her first three books and started a career that would make her a New York Times bestseller and land her on the USA Today Bestseller’s List eighteen times in the next three years. Her books have sold millions of copies all over the world, the audio version of her semi-autobiographical book, Eighteen, was nominated for a Voice Arts Award and an Audie award in 2016 and 2017 respectively, her audiobook Mr. Perfect was nominated for a Voice Arts Award in 2017, and her book, Taking Turns, was nominated for an Audie Award in 2018. Johnathan McClain is her first (and only) writing partner and even though they are worlds apart in just about every way imaginable, it works.

She lives on a ranch in Central Colorado with her family.

***5 "Pull Me Taut" Stars***

I didn't expect to fall in love with Ford Aston.

There is nothing about Ford Aston that I should love. Not on the surface. In Rook's story, he was necessary and I loved him for giving her something she needed, but I wasn't sure I could fall in love with him.

I did. So hard.

If you can forget for a moment that Ford is a very specific kind of man, stop taking him at his bullshit word, and just experience him as you would a road you've never driven on - no expectations, just optimism for an adventure - you will discoverJ.A. Huss's most endearing hero. He is flawed, he is damaged, and he is his own worst enemy sometimes, but that is what makes him the same as the rest of us, no matter what he thinks. That's what makes him the indispensable part of a team, the best friend you don't want to ever lose, the lover you can believe God sent to save your life.

I trusted Rook, but I didn't understand before. Now I get it.

Rutherford Aston is an ass, a creep, a freak... And he knows it! It's just that he might not be as bad as he thinks when it comes down to it.

Review - (un)Conventional Bookviews

I had forgotten what an ass Ford could be! Fucking Ford. He's still my favorite guy in this series, though, and the narration made it even more so. The emotions were stronger, and hearing Duran's voice being Ford was awesome! The pacing was well done, and I have to say I loved getting to know more about Ford, and meeting Sasha, Ashleigh and Kate was something I appreciated just as much the second time around. Seeing the lengths he would go to for his friends, while still thinking he wasn't a good person made me fall in love with him all over again! He has such a capacity for love and caring, and when he gives into his feelings, he goes all the way.

Huss definitely knows how to tell a story that makes me feel things, I went through all the emotions listening to this, and I found the narrator to be the perfect one for this particular instalment in the Rook and Ronin series. While this is a spinoff, it can be read or listened to on its own. It felt very intimate to listen to this one, even more so than reading it, because for most of the story the two protagonists were alone, and it felt like I was hidden somewhere with them.

If you want a more detailed review, you can check Slack and Taut reviews by clicking on the links. I truly hope the rest of this series and Julie's other books will all be made into audiobooks as well so I have a good excuse to enter this amazing world once more.

Fave Quotes - (un)Conventional Bookviews

Why does Ronin get the girls, and I get the pets? Fucking pets!

I hated him. I might still hate him a little. Probably more than a little.

The only woman I want to move on with is the only woman I can't have.

Ford is a very interesting character. Without having read the Rook and Ronin or the Spencer series, I was introduced to Ford in the Dirty, Dark and Deadly series with James Fenici. Ford and his relationship with Sasha was intriguing and I wanted to know more about him. In Slack, you read about Ford's pets - which made him seem so insensitive. But after reading Taut, Ford is one of my favorites! I loved that he was a bit nerdy and in his own sphere at times. Having the entire book on Ford's POV was perfectly crafted. The dialogue between Ford and Ash seemed so real and intimate, especially when she entered into his sphere. Not to mention that he is one sexy dirty talker! Ford's protectiveness toward Kate was also endearing and sweet.

I really enjoyed the journey of Ford, Ashleigh and Kate and I'll miss them.

How do I love thee? Let me count the FORD ever lovin ways! GAWD, I thought I was Ronin’s. I mean I freakin loved Ronin. He was hot, sweet, brought me to my knees. But then I got to know FORD. I mean really got to know him. And sweet baby JESUS he brought me to the floor. In a fetal position.

I want him.
I need him.
I want to be his pet.

I LOVED Tragic, Manic and Panic. LOVED THEM. When I say loved, I mean I totally fangirled on JA Huss. Wrote her love notes. Yep. But this, this book TAUT, there are no words. I wanna show up at her house and just bring her flowers, chocolate, diamonds. She is a genius.

She gave me the biggest BOOKGASM ever!!!

Ford I found myself saying YES FORD, WHATEVER YOU WANT FORD. Want me to strip? SURE! Want me to keep quiet? YOU GOT IT! Want to tie me up and beg for it? ABSOFUCKINLUTELY!!!! He is that HOT!!!

Poor FORD. He is a misunderstood genius. He is so in love with Rook—but she’s Ronin’s.

The story begins with FORD leaving the Chaput New Year’s eve party. We hear from his point of view how hard it was for him to walk away from Rook. But he does. He has to get away from her. Too bad there’s a blizzard going on and he gets stuck—stranded—forced to stay in a cheap ass motel.

"Shit, if Ronin was in this predicament, he’d have broken down across from the Four Seasons, they’d tell him they only had the penthouse available, and he could have it for half price since it was sitting empty anyway. They’d send up complimentary fruit baskets and give him free spa passes to ease his worried brow."

This is where he meets Ashleigh.

ashleigh I WANT TO BE ASHLEIGH!! I have never been so jealous of a book character in my life. If I could just have one item on my bucket list come true it would be to become Ashleigh Li!!!

It wasn’t instalove, it wasn’t instasex. It was slow, kind of a torture almost, leading up to the freakin most intense sexual experience in a book. I literally wanted to just jump in and freakin force them to just do it already (and kick Ashleigh out, but that’s besides the point)!!!

But really, I loved Ashleigh. The poor girl was a flippin mess. She has a beautiful 3 ½ month old daughter who she is trying so desperately to care for on her own. She has an unresolved issue with her husband. My heart broke for her.
But FORD is nice to her. He’s not usually so nice. She caught him on a “bad day”. They leave the motel and head to Ford’s house. So the two are stuck together in his house in Vail. Both completely fucked up people for completely different fucked up reasons. They fit like a fucked up puzzle, but they don’t even realize it.
“What do you like, Ashleigh? You like it slow and tender? Because if so, you’re out of luck. I’m not that kind of guy.”

OH. MY. GAWD.
“I like what you like, Rutherford.”

“You have no idea what I like and if I were you, I’d be careful what you agree to. Because I like it dirty and if I decide to fuck you, I’ll expect compliance.”

So—there go my panties!!! Jesus FORD, you own me. You are the hottest, sickest book ORGASM I’ve ever had in my life. Want one more quote?!!! YES YOU DO!!!
“…I’m going to have a lot of rules, Ashleigh. And a lot of commands you’ll have to follow. I’m going to touch you in places that will make you scream. I’m going to let you please me in ways you’ve only dreamed of, and then I’m gong to fuck you sore.”

I LOVED Ashleigh’s reply:
“I think I just came, I swear to God, I’m not even joking.”

So did I!!! I just came…honestly…it is just GAWD I have no words.

But seriously, TAUT moves in so many directions and will have your emotions in an upheaval. You will laugh, you will cry, you will fall in love. The storyline is perfect, the pacing is perfect, the writing is perfect. The characters are flawed, deep, and there are many twists and turns along the way. JA is seriously one of the best storytellers I’ve come across. Words cannot express how HARD I loved this book. It was like a fantasy come true. It had everything I look for in a book. So do yourself a favor—go buy TAUT and meet FORD. You will fall in love. I guarantee it!!!

5 BILLION smack myself in the ass stars!!!

Couldn't wait to read this book after meeting Ford in Rook & Ronins story, his character intrigued me the most, couldn't put this book down, loved it. You get to know and understand Ford's past much more in this book, why he is the way he is. Then Ash & Kate turn up in his life and you get to see Ford slowly develop feelings he never thought he was capable of feeling. Ford is so sweet and hot ! Totally recommend this book. :-)

I did not pay attention to the description and got a bit of a surprise. I put the book down after the first chapter and had to come back to it months later.

I liked the mystery parts and thought some features were interesting. I did not enjoy the beginning and some elements. Mostly this is different from my style of romance books.

4.5 stars. Not your typical new adult romance. Ford is cut from very different cloth than most romance heroes, and at first you may not like him at all, especially at the start of TAUT. I came to like him very much by the end of SLACK, but he's never a completely cuddly person, and that's okay. He's a very human one, and he's struggling with a couple conditions that don't make life easy.

Ashleigh (the heroine of SLACK) is an interesting mix. She comes off as a total mess at times, but once you find out what she's been through, it all makes sense. Though I did guess something about her that turned out to be true at the end, I didn't see some other things coming. I wasn't completely convinced that she'd fall for Ford so quickly (given her history and state of mind), but I did believe that she was on the cusp of loving him wholeheartedly by the end.

Some good twists and turns throughout. The book could have used a touch more proofreading (especially the latter part of SLACK), but for the most part this was a very smooth read with few errors. Yay! :)

I hadn't read any of the earlier books in the series, so I'm going to have to go back and pick them up to see what I missed. Recommended for anyone who likes unusual heroes and storylines.

FORD IS JUST SPECIAL

FORD IS JUST SPECIAL

I knew there was something so special about Ford. He was my favorite when I was reading Ronin and Rook's stories. It's true you can read Taut by itself, however, it's so much better to start reading at the very beginning of the series with Tragic so you do not miss out on one single juicy, delicious part of the lives of the characters in this series.

As I have said before, this is one of my top 5 series that I have ever read. DO NOT MISS OUT on reading all of the stories. Ford is not weird, just off the charts smart and extremely sexy. He didn't have a tragic childhood or life. He was just different but absolutely not defective. I loved him as well as every member of his team.

" Dear God, Thank you for sending me Ford." - Ashleigh

This man...oh this man...words elude me at the moment. The first novella, "Slack" gives us a snapshot of Ford who is unraveling slowly because of his unrequited love for Rook. He feels that she is the only woman that he ever wanted and wants to touch him; the only woman with whom he wishes to kiss and share a normal love affair spiced up with a little kink. He realizes that he is indeed capable of feelings because previous to this revelation he thought he just did not share in the feelings associated with just being human. He felt his off the charts genius and propensity for the dark arts with "his team" that includes Ronin and Spencer came at the price of being an unfeeling bastward. "Taut" picks up after he declares himself to Rook and tells her he must leave her life because he cannot stand the pain of wanting but never having her. He finds himself running away out of Denver up into the mountains ill prepared with his 30 yr old Bronco in a furious snowstorm. He is stranded in Vail as is a young mother with her baby. He shares his motel room with her and begins to take care of these two seemingly fragile beings as they journey together to LA, by way of Vegas.
Gradually Ashleigh and little baby Kate worm their way into his heart. Yet, he is ever careful in giving all of his love, tenderness, even permission to touch him. Ms. Huss created one of the sexiest evolving Alpha Dominant males I've read. In a way, his reflections about his youth and how he did not or could not stand to be touched...his isolation...his inventive, sometimes hurtful pranks and lack of care for others...are reflections we all may have about how selfish we may have been in our youth.
She creates this lovely tug and pull between Ashleigh and Ford. Ashleigh is holding on to her love of the father of her baby and perhaps only desires Ford sexually. Ford is holding on to his kisses and tenderness because he wants Ashleigh and Kate to be his more than he ever wanted anyone else to include Rook.
Ashleigh herself is a marvel with a keen intelligence and spot-on insight. Her entire story is one that will break your heart. Her tender and attentive care of her baby is lovely to behold.
The climax of their story is breathtaking. The first kiss sublime. Ford becomes a complete man, a lovely man a beautiful, desirable, sexually exciting man. And, as Ashleigh remarked a couple times, he has a nice package! Ms. Huss, thank you for writing Ford for me!

This is the first JA Huss book I've read, so I was unfamiliar with Rook and Ronin from the previous 3 books. Although there are many many mentions of the past story and their relationships (especially Rook and Ford), I felt like there was enough information provided to get me fairly up to date. [BUT I don't think you could read Spencer's book without at least reading Ford's story. In fact, reading that story was the only time I felt I was at a loss for not reading Rook/Ronin first as their entire drama comes to a conclusion (and intertwines with Ford/Ashleigh's story).]

I fell for Ford immediately. There are so many layers to his character and underneath the asshole exterior he puts out there. He's quick, witty, methodical, hard, and introspective. And after all of that, his (reluctant at times) nurturing of Ashleigh undid me as it was so unexpected from the front he shows everyone and she could see through his walls.

I think the author said it best during her "end of book shit" after Spencer's story - Guns: The Spencer Book. "I can relate to Ford the most I guess. I dig his indifference. I'm pretty indifferent. I live in my own world, I make my own rules. It might not always turn out great, but I'm ok with that. Failure is always an option. Success and failure go hand in hand. It's ok to fuck up, as long as you never stop trying." I've reached an age (39) that I'm learning to stop living my life the way others want (consciously/subconsciously). This quote immediately resonated with me. I'm not there yet, but it articulates where I'm going and why I liked Ford so much.

In all seriousness, can I please become one of Ford's pets? Is there an application I have to fill out or something? If so, send it on over!

Slack is a fabulous quick read to get you ready for Taut and it really shows you a day in the life of the arrogant, but insanely hot and alpha, Ford Aston. I waited until right before Taut was released and it was the best decision as I absolutely cannot get enough of Ford and his snarky comments! Slack showcases all of Ford's best alpha qualities, but also shows that he has a softer side too, like what we saw with Rook in Panic. The situation with her is still present and I just feel so sorry for him. Although Rook has been pretty upfront with him, I still feel like she is playing him a little bit. Poor Ford, he has just been unlucky in love, “He only has to ask and love appears in his life. And me? I beg for it. I want love more than anything, yet everyone thinks I’m insufferable.” I can't wait to see what happens in Taut!

5 slack and taut stars

I went into this book pretty blond and without reading any other books that are connected and I can safely say thank god! There were parts that probably would have made more sense but I would have to read about Rook and I can honestly say I hate her.

To me this book would have been amazing and a 6 star read if I didn't have to read about her and her selfish ways I seriously wanted to slap the shit out of her!

The main characters Ford and Ashleigh and just wow so many facets and layers they were so amazing together. I wish we got more of an ending for these two I just wanted more and more. Some parts of this story melted my heart and others broke my heart for the pain they went through. I just recently became a mother and for her to go what she went through just wow such a strong strong girl. These two are definately a favourite book couple they just belong together

I had a hard time connecting with Ford. J.A. Huss did a good job of weaving his history and issues, but it really took me a long time to like him. He was selfish, self absorbed and I had enough of reading about his love for Rook. I realized he loved her, but I was ready to move on. I did like Ashleigh. I liked how she handled Ford. I felt some of the story was predictable. Overall, it was entertaining ... 3.5 stars.

It was an ok read for me. I just really didn't connect with the characters & felt bored at times. I found it hard to believe in his feelings when he kept endlessly repeating how much he was in love with his best friend & would take her if she'd have him. The ending was good & that is about all for me : )

rutherFORD FTW

Well, you’re probably only going to read this (this is the “omnibus” combo of the two novellas about Ford) if you’ve read the others, so I doubt I could say anything that would dissuade you from following through on your curiosity. Ford’s backstory is great. Ashleigh’s is not my favorite, but the passages that include what he thinks about her breastfeeding are incredibly hot. I never ever thought that was a sentence I would write, but it’s good to know I can surprise myself.

So read, young grasshoppers! Don’t let anyone say you are crazy for feeling emotional when the moment calls for it.

Huss gives her readers a free link to her audiobook files for this series, so it is worth checking it out if you are a listener. Troy Duran narrates and he is so good!!

OMG I love Ford Aston! He’s peculiar and weird in his own way but he is also an amazing and great guy and when he is in he’s all in. When he first started showing up in Rook and Ronins story I knew he wasn’t right for Rook. Ashleigh was the perfect fit for him and the fact that Ashleigh came with a little Kate, they were the perfect fit. I loved this entire story and I can’t wait to read more!

While the synopsis says you do not need to read the previous Rook &Ronin series in order to read this book bundle, they will make more sense and be more enjoyable if Rook&Ronin's books are read first, I think. Ford and Rook had a relationship that was inappropriate at times, yet at times very sweet and you really see a lot of Ford's idiosyncrasies first hand in those books.

With that being said, I went into this book not really expecting to like it as I didn't entirely like Ford from Rook&Ronin's story. I was pleasantly surprised when Ford started exhibiting behaviors more 'normal' in Taut. I was really enjoying the banter and interaction between Ford and Ashleigh quite a lot, their dialogue was quite good. She really didn't allow him to get away with too much, and for some reason he actually cared when he upset her or hurt her feelings. It was quite nice to see him show respect for someone, and it was because Ashleigh challenged him.

Ashleigh was on the run and we had no idea why for most of the book. Why was she traveling in the dead of winter with a 3-month old baby, especially at New Year's? There were hints of underlying sadness and depression, yet I was NEVER expecting what her story was ultimately! Wow, very nicely done, Ms Huss! While there is somewhat insta-love/lust here, I wasn't completely bothered by it. They were both trying to forget about another person, so while it seemed like they both moved on too quickly, they were both freshly hurt. Not sure why it made it ok for me, but it did.

Why only 3-stars when I have a lot of good things to say about the book? Well, there were a hell of a lot of editing issues. I cannot diagram a sentence to save my life, and I am certain there are errors to be found in my review, yet there were commas missing in this book in places so obvious even I noticed. Even one of Ford's t-shirt slogans was missing a comma. He was a genius, and kind of OCD about things, so I doubt he would own a shirt with incorrect grammar.

The other major issue I had with this book was the ending. What a complete and utter let down! I would say it was one of the most anticlimactic endings I have read in a very, very long time. All this mystery, intrigue and suspense for such little reward. It was almost comical how it was so quickly resolved. I mean, there were repetitive thoughts from Ford throughout the entire book, he psychoanalyzed himself over and over, yet the ending seemed so brief and lacking the depth compared to the rest of the book. Had the ending been handled with more care, this would have been 4-stars.

I really cannot wait for Taut because I will get even more Ford in my life. Although he acts cocky and very arrogant, all he seeks for is acceptance and love. But I could see that he doesn't see himself to be loved. All he does are submissive because he is a dominant at hand and you can't ask for anything more because it is definitely hot.

Ford Aston is Christian Grey reincarnated and I don't mind at all where it leads me. Who doesn't want to have a day in Ford Aston because although he has a cold exterior, he just needs to warm up to you and you'll kind of want to put him on your book boyfriends list.

Ford is a Runner. He is going to keep running until he finds his reason to stop. Needless to say, I thought that Ford was an asshole. Hell, he is one. He definitely reminds me of an onion. You have to peel back the layers, one at a time and then you get to his soft center. Also, he makes you cry. Especially in this book. I cannot stop crying over him.

Now I just cannot get enough of Ford. He's definitely on my book boyfriends list. I swear... As I continue reading, there will never be enough of the men who fill it.

When Ashleigh was introduced, I think I may have found my female lover. She is strong and beautiful. Tragic and yet lucky. I definitely fell in love with her as a character. Demanding and smart. God, she was amazing. Plus, I am a complete sucker for babies and since Kate was in the story, that may have helped too. Baby fever. I swear that it is a real thing.

Anyways, I think that it is safe to say that I can rate this a good 4 out of 5 stars because J.A. Huss never disappoints and this story was a beautiful story of two people saving each other.

I just finished Slack and Taut. WOW! I needed a few minutes before I could even put my thoughts into words. I had to leave Ford a little love note, since I had been, not bad mouthing exactly, but saying I didn't like his character as much. Taut has completely changed my mind. I loved this story. Seeing a side of Ford I didn't think he was capable of.

My note to Ford:
Oh Ford. I didn't think you could do it, you broke down that wall. The wall I had in my heart towards you. I thought all my feeling were for Spencer, I haven't met him intimately yet, but those feelings were there. I didn't think you could compete, but you showed me wrong. You made me feel things toward you that I didn't know I was ready for. You sir now have my heart.

JA Huss. I don't know how you do it but each book is better than the last. So sad I waited so long to read this series but I love experiencing them slowly. I read wanting to find out what happens but not wanting them to end. You Ms. Huss have found a reader fan for life. Thank you for sharing these characters with me.

If you haven't read this series yet. Don't be like me, don't wait so damn long...GO READ THEM NOW!!!

Hmmm. Although this is a prequel to Taut, I really think this should be read AFTER finishing Taut. I have not read any of the books where Ford is introduced, didn't know any of the other characters so reading Slack was like reading the middle of a story where I didn't know who anyone was. I wasn't invested enough to care about any one, including Ford. I feel a bit left out with this one. Then I read Taut and that's when I really fell in love with Ford. So my advice would be to read Taut then get more of your Ford fix with this little novella.
