Surviving her ordeal on Drimera was only the beginning. Forced to pick up the remains of her life and move on, Dahlia returns to her vigilante ways: hunting monsters by the cover of darkness. Backed by a new team, she vows to keep the streets safe while training to harness the eye’s abilities. But the city has become a time bomb, and every day the clock ticks faster—as the creatures pour in and the blight spreads. Dahlia worries she will never be enough to stop the impending destruction. How can she be the answer to saving them all?
Already stretched thin, Dahlia shies away from investigating the Sentinel’s latest murder spree. But the victims’ identities confound her. And the fragile thread tying the postmortem mutilations to Ella Chandler is impossible to ignore. Compelled to unravel the truth, what she uncovers only deepens the mystery. Who engineered the sinister plot? Why does everything lead back to that first case—the one that brought Dahlia out of the shadows and into the light?
Time is running out. Change is coming, and the worlds will never be the same.
Slash & Burn is the 4th book in the Nite Fire Series.
Born in the Midwest, I live in New York's scenic Hudson Valley Region with my husband and two sons. A huge reader since childhood, I penned my first full-length novel in high school on a typewriter in my parent's living room. That was when my dream of becoming a published author was born. Life happened, and it took a while, but I can honestly say: it's the best job ever.
If you're looking for puppies, rainbows, and sweet romance, you won't find that here. My stories tend to run dark, gritty, and adult, full of action, magic, intrigue, antiheroes, mysteries and monsters.

Slash & Burn is the fourth book in the Nite Fire series by C. L. Schneider. It is a fantastic action-packed urban fantasy that kept me glued to the pages right from the get-go! We meet up with Dahlia Nite, the dragon shifter and all-round kick-a**, while she is still coming to terms with the events and fallout from the previous book. A lot has happened since we met her back in book one, and she has been through so much. She has survived her ordeal and has been picking up the pieces of her life, while training hard and trying to get a handle on everything. She has returned to her vigilante ways in an effort to keep the streets safe. But the spreading blight, and sheer numbers of ‘monsters’ will test her like never before. Does she have any chance of stemming the flow? This is definitely worth the read to find out. Highly recommended for fans of epic, or urban fantasy- who like plenty of action and adventure! Can’t wait to get my hands on the fifth, and final, instalment in the series- ‘Exit Strategy’. Superb!
Slash & Burn (Nite Fire, #4) by C.L. Schneider is a supernatural shifter story and another wonderful addition to the series. The books should be read in order or you are behind the eight ball on the background of the characters and the world around them. C.L.’s word building is spot on when you can vividly imagine the world in which they fight to live. Her writing is enticing and engrossing, and the characters are interesting. The urban fantasy has intrigue and action will keep you engaged throughout and take you on a journey where there are supernatural beings, demons and humans live and fight.
Dahlia Nite is brash and kickarse, loud and sassy. She is also half human half dragon. She fights to protect others. This is a vigilante you want on your side.
I recommend this book and can’t wait to see what happens next.
This was a great read! I love how well this author writes and how descriptive all her books are and this one is absolutely no disappointment! Full of action, fantasy, suspense, drama and some comedy this book has it all. It's packed full on entertaining scene after entertaining scene and I found this one so hard to put down. It was absolutely amazing! I really loved this one and I can't read to read the next installment soon!
In the fourth installment of the series Dahlia Nite is again being hunted down by the retrievers for the Queen and this team, the fourth one isn’t giving up easily, as she leads them to a strip mall, she takes them out one by one and disposes of the bodies in her own personal manner and gets away on her motorcycle before the authorities arrive and try to work out what is going on, the only difference is that this time, she has a team behind her who she can trust, even if one half is way more high maintenance than the other.
A few days later and Dahlia and her team are back in Drimera and she is practicing and trying to understand the blight and what can affect it, but she isn’t making any headway and it is frustrating her to no end, but her team still have faith in her, but when they are about to leave and get attacked by the normal creatures they come across in the area, they are shocked and unnerved by the creatures which are attacking them because as far as they know, those creatures have no way to get to this area and that is worrying to all of them, especially when they realise that they are being affected by the blight as well. The main thing which is worrying Dahlia at the moment is the speed that the blight is growing and that she is running out of time to stop it, not to mention the secrets which are being kept from her by friends and allies alike, but when she returns to the human realm for her patrols once the creatures had been dealt with, there are already police reports being reported which could be supernatural in nature, so Dahlia goes to check them out. Two were a bust, however the third one seems like a likely candidate, but she cannot get close enough to see what is happening and the crowd aren’t forthcoming with information, just insults aimed at one of the cops working the case, so she leaves while trying not to be seen, after giving the grumbler a piece of her mind along the way.
While Dahlia is trying to rest, she keeps having more nightmare, but they are not the usual kind and they are more detailed than before, but they still aren’t making any sense, but when they wake her up, she doesn’t want to disturb her bed fellow, but she can’t relax either and so she goes to get up and go to the gym instead and try and work out the emotions instead. The last thing she expects to happen is her ex partner banging the door after weeks of not speaking to her, but when she eventually decides to let him in, it is really awkward between them so instead of much talk about the elephant in the room, they talk about a case instead and it turns out it is the one she saw last night and that there are similarities and connections between that one and Dahlia’s first case she worked with him, too many connections but in the end she agrees to help him.
When Dahlia and her team go out on another patrol, they are responding to reports of animal attacks and missing pets, but what they find is worse than they could have possible imagined, there is a sinkhole and a whole herd of creatures, not to mention a lot more blight, but will Dahlia and her team be able to ferret out the clues to who is behind all the lies and secrecy which surround them, or will the blight become uncontrollable and destroy everything in its path before they can come up with a solution? This is another whirlwind adventure with thrills and spills along the way as you are pulled along on the current as it speeds towards the conclusion.
Wow, oh wow!!!! I loved this book. This is book four and the author is certainly turning up the heat. I would say that you need to have read or listened to the previous books because the author doesn't waste much valuable adventure time explaining previous events or relationships, yeah more action and double crossing on this non stop emotional roller coaster. Luckily I didn't need tissues with this book but that is not to say everybody makes it. I just love the characters!!! I would be hard pressed to choice a favourite but the banter between the main character and the sidekick Evan and even with the detective Alex is fun. It also has me crossing my fingers every time either of them face up against a new opponent. This is a real fantasy world that has captured my imagination, as the Dragon shifter fights to save the human world, being a cosy mystery reader this is so not my normal listen but I have loved every minute of every book. The author also manages to get a mystery in to the story, she is that talented and skilled at creating a story people want to read by not sticking to just one genre. Looking forward to the next book but at the same time dreading it because it is the last book in series (Boo) and I have a feeling not everybody is going to make it. Dahlia and her team are doing there best to stop the creatures and hold back the blight but it is not proving enough and time is quickly running out. The Queen has sent her people to killer her and the King is refusing to met with her. Detective Alex Creed also turns to her for help, after there last meeting turned into such a fiasco he must really need help. Bodies of young girls are being found in strange conditions. Conditions that can only be left by a monster and as Dahlia is the expert he must learn to trust her again. Can the pair once again work together? The more she looks into the case the less she likes the answers as the people she trusted the most seem to have there own agenda. Who can she trust to tell her the truth and will learning the truth help in her quest to save humankind? I like the narrator. She puts in an excellent performance and is a treat to listen too. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I could not put this audiobook down. Slash & Burn is the fourth book in the Nite Fire series and I think it may be the best one so far.
The story starts up again with Dahlia Nite dealing with the aftermath and possibly PTSD from her time being held in Drimera. This half dragon shapeshifter has a lot to deal with, let alone struggling to keep her true identity or secrets of her world a secret from those she loves.
Dahlia often finds herself trying to protect the humans from things that go bump in the night, living in the shadows and somehow always investigating brutal murders. This book has her doing the same, but this time a crazy killing spree is taking place which triggers her ex-partner, Creed asks her to assist him with his investigation as the killings continue throughout Sentinel City.
Initially, Dahlia is not fond of assisting Creed w/ the hunt for the serial killer, but the clues start piling up and seem to be leading back to a previous case.
She feels as if time is running out and something bad is just around the corner. The heaviness of responsibility of protecting the humans, her new team and even herself is taking its toll. All while trying to stay off of the Dragon Queen’s radar, which she knows will only work for a short period of time.
I often found myself feeling sorry or sympathetic with Creed since he’s still trying to come to terms with Dahlia’s true identity.
Dahlia’s wit and tenacity remind me of one of my favorite fictional characters, Anita Blake written by fellow author, Laurell K. Hamilton. The author did a fantastic job with this series, building up the characters, expanding and building up Dahlia’s world and keeping the action and overall story plot right on target to continue into the next and final book of this series.
You’ll find drama, action, humor, and entertaining characters in this series and book. I cannot wait to pick up book number 5 of this series and continue the Dahlia story.
Sentinel City has become a ticking time bomb towards total destruction as creatures pour into earth from the worlds of the veil. Dahlia has returned from her crazy ordeal on Drimera. If you haven't yet, you have to read the first 3 books!! Man so much action missed if you haven't!! Anyways, she has picked up her life (somewhat), and is TRYING to move on. You know grow and do better. Well, under the cover of the city's darkness, she is hunting monsters, again. Yep she wants to help human kind! She vows to keep the streets safe, while at the same time trying to harness the dragon eye's abilities. Will she figure out the eye's secrets and use it for good? Dahlia is always stretched to her limits and this time is no different. Unfortunately the impending destruction of her adopted home makes her worry if she will be enough to stop it all. After all how can she help the whole city? She's only one half dragon shapeshifter. Dahlia shies away from the latest murder spree, but the victims' identities grip her. Trying to unravel the truth, she uncovers something deeper. Of course! Nothing can ever be simple right? This mystery and the many threads of murder tying together are impossible to ignore and she has to find out who is behind this plot once and for all. Who is against her at every turn! Could this all lead back to the beginning? What does Ella have to do with it all? Will this bring the linked worlds into the light more? Will her new team help her to save the city once and for all? Man oh man!! Such a great set! I didn't want to put it down! This set had me up late all week, so I could binge the whole thing. I can't wait to finish book 5 now!! Less sleep but SO WORTH IT!!!!!
So, I have listened to the first book in this series on Audiobook, and I was thoroughly impressed by that, now, by no logic that I can ever explain I have hopped, skipped, and jumped to book 4. Though missing out quite a big portion of the story so far, I have got to say that Schneider does an amazing job of getting you up to speed, I didn’t feel lost and got the sense that the book could stand alone if it absolutely had to. Still, I would recommend reading the series in order, at least to limit any potential confusion. Badass Dhalia Nite is back, kicking ass and taking names. As always have got to love the character, she is witty, sassy, and self-assured, and also not an idiot, which is so nice to read. Doing what she does best, Dahlia keeps the streets safe from all manner of nasty beasties. But she notices that something isn’t quite right, with monsters pouring in from, what feels like, every available angle, she fears that she and her new team may not be enough to stop the destruction. I really enjoyed this book, and it was interesting to see how far Dahlia had developed, even though through my own stupidity I’d missed out on half of it. Gotta say that I absolutely adored this read and would recommend it to anyone that loves a fair whack of action and mystery. Schneider just knows how to drop you into a scene, making everything so vivid, it feels like you are actually there. She is a fantastic writer and I look forward to reading more of her work.
I have been following Dahlia and her adventures, to uncover things as well as her secrets since book One. I can never get enough. She is a wonderfully written characters, and the way she presents herself is a force you do not seriously want to mess with. I love the series and how it captivates me! Love it!
I found this installment really brought on the action. Dahlia has been through a lot by this point in the series. And the whole thing of her life getting easier, is very far from within reach. I found she figured some things out here and there, but as she did more confusion and questions arose from the ground. I love the suspense and how the author creates a book and series with non stop action, that keeps me on my toes, as well as constantly guessing what may happen next. Honestly when I was reaching towards the ending, when things came to light, I was blown away literally! Freaking love this series!
Seriously this is such an amazing series. If you have not read the prior installments, you really should, it is a series that is well worth the read. The author is very gifted and talented at the writing they do and the stories they create. High recommendation for the book installment, series, and author! Must read!
Yeah, I lost almost an entire night of sleep because I couldn't put this book down once I got into it.
2020 was hard on many of us and (by the author's own admission) caused a delay in this 4th episode to this wonderful series. Because it took so long since book three, it look a while for my mind to catch up, and for me to get 'back into the zone' as I remembered previous episodes.
But once I did, I couldn't put it down, and that's when the book robbed me of most of one night's sleep because I couldn't stop till I finished. But, oh, was it worth it!
I'm not a fan of series that just go on and on... and on and on, and usually start to lose interest by the fourth book when they get tedious and repetitive. This fourth episode wasn't one of those and was still exciting and fresh all the way through.
I'm glad the author has committed to ending the series at episode five, but hope 2021 doesn't cause another extended time period to the finish. I'm eagerly awaiting another five star effort to the finish like 'this' solid five star offering.
Nite Fire: Slash & Burn is the fourth book in the Nite Fire series by C. L. Schneider, whose other books include the Crown of Stones series. It is an exciting paranormal story with elements of urban fantasy (and also dragons – can’t beat a good dragon story!) By now, Dahlia Nite is an established heroine, and has been through more than her fair share of scrapes. She continues to be tenacious and resourceful, if often impatient. Her previous adventure has given her new powers which could be incredibly powerful, if she learns how to use them. This is a fast-paced, action-filled book. There’s a lot going on, and plenty of clues to put together as the story progresses. It’s definitely a page-turner! This book doesn’t really work as a standalone. It’s definitely worth reading the previous three books that introduce the characters and set the stage for what happens! For me, this is a five-star read. Another great book in the series! I’d recommend the series to fans of urban fantasy who like plenty of action!
Slash and Burn (Nite Fire Book 4) byC.L. Schneider 4 Stars
The web of lies that was spun years ago is starting to unravel. Dahlia is slowly uncovering the truth. Yet with every discovery, a dozen more questions remain. Everything seems to lead back to her first case involving Ella Chandler. When all evidence seems to point in one direction, Dahlia doesn’t know who to trust anymore. She has barely survived her last trip to Drimera and she’s still trying to pick up the pieces of her life and adjust to her new reality. She’s back to her vigilante ways protecting Sentinel City but now it seems that she needs to protect the world from total destruction.
This is an action packed fantasy novel. It will definitely keep you glued to your seat from beginning to end. It is book four in the Nite Fire series. I do suggest that you read the series from the start. It is an exciting series that keeps getting better with each book. There are so many plot twists in this story and the author did an excellent job of tying them together. I can’t wait for the final installment.
This book is really different from the other three in the series and is by far my favorite. Dahlia is back to her normal night time life after being trapped on Drimera for a while. The Queen is still after her so Dahlia is constantly running from and fighting the Queens forces. The blight that has been affecting all of the other worlds seems to have made its way to Earth. Dahlia is determined to eradicate the blight before it gets worse with the help of her friends of course.
On top of that, creatures that normally would not enter the portals to Earth are making their way through. Dahlia is overworked and overtired. She feels like she is running out of time.
Murders are once again happening and the clues are showing supernatural reasons. Creed asks Dahlia for her help but she already is doing too much. Can she solve the murders and destroy the blight before she herself is destroyed? You will have to read this book and if you haven't read the other three, I would highly suggest doing so as well!
This is quite the story. I love reading more about Dahlia and her escapades. There is a lot that happens and it really kept me on my toes. Even re-reading passages to make sure I am understanding the flow of the story. Do you like action? Well this one has it in spades! Deceit, trickery and strong friendships all Fall into line within the story.
We meet new characters and say hello to some old ones. Each on add some spice and fire to the story. Dahlia has been fighting for her life, her friends and even sometimes her enemies. She is strong if mind and body as she struggles to understand what is happening to her and her town. Evans is still a great side kick and they have a few comedic moments. Creed is up in the air and not really sure which side he is landing on.
Overall this is a nice add to her series. The characters all come to life in their roles. The story has many ups and downs so be prepared. It looks like this might not be the end for her but we will see.
Slash and Burn is the fourth book in the Nite Fire Series This is a Urban Fantasy/Paranormal story that once you start reading there’s no stopping until you’ve finished. I devoured this book in one afternoon I couldn’t stop I had to know what was going to happen next. I highly recommend reading this series in order as it will give you a better understanding of what is going on and you get to know all the great characters. This series just keeps getting better and better this is my favorite yet. Dahlia is back and fiercer than ever, she’s one bad ace dragon shifter . Love her character and all she brings to this series. This is packed with action enough suspense that you will be on the edge of your seat. Get ready for quite the ride. I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book in this series.
Slash & Burn (Nite Fire Book 4) By C. L. Schneider 5 out of 5 stars
I loved reading the book Slash & Burn (Nite Fire Book 4) by C. L. Schneider. It is a story that pulled me in from the beginning and didn’t let me go until the final page. It is a book that had me on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. I love the character of Dahlia. She is strong, intelligent, and independent. What does the future hold for her? Read this book to find out. This is a story that includes danger and suspense. The author does an amazing job of making the story and the characters come alive. A tale is woven that grabs your attention. This is the fourth book in a series, and I would suggest reading them in order. There are other additional characters that I enjoyed reading about. Don’t miss out on a story that is exciting, entertaining, suspenseful, and thrilling. I highly
This is the 4th book in the Nite Fire series. I have loved all these books so far. This book could be read as a standalone but I recommend reading the series from the beginning. It is full of action packed adventure that keeps you gripped from beginning to end.
After the trauma and revelations of the last book Dahlia is trying to get her life back on track. She is back to her vigilant ways. Saving the humans from monsters but something is coming.
The blight is causing infections through every species that cross the exits. Most creatures are entering the human world meaning that Dahlia has a hard job keeping control.
What is the cause of the blight? Who or what is behind all this and why? And the question Dahlia is asking herself is she capable of controlling all the species entering this world or will it be doomed to fall?
This book was better than the second and third! I definitely didn't see a lot of the things coming that happened. What happens after you rescue your best friend/sidekick's sister and barely survive the last visit Drimera? Well for Dahlia instead of things going up things go down. She finds out the truth about someone she has known for a very long time and even considered him a mentor. But what do you do with the information? What do you when you find someone who is close with your partner but they believe him to be dead? What do you do when the sister you just rescued willing goes back to Drimera with Aidric and Alex Creed? And to top it all off all hell breaks loose on their world. Welcome to the apocalypse! This book had me hooked with every twist and turn. I'm so glad I stuck with series and if there is a 5th book I will be reading.
Nite Fire: Slash & Burn by C.L. Schneider reviewed by Lauren Cox
This book was so different from the last three books, and I could argue it is one of my favorites so far. Dahlia has grown so much since we first met her three books ago, all of the challenges she has faced, the people she has saved and the dragon queen she has continually outran. This book has heartache, lack of trust, broken relationships and more monsters than can take over the city. After they discover a sink hole, missing pets and more blight, can they come up with a solution before the blight become uncontrollable and destroy everything in their path? Her former partner Alex has come to her for help after not speaking, the deaths could only have been from more monsters. Can he trust Dahlia again? Can they work together and find the solution?
This is the fourth book in this series and it is just as great as the previous three. This author has continued to impress me with her writing skills and attention to details. This book is no different. I was pulled into the story from the beginning. Dahlia is back in another story and journey of non stop action. Things will never be the same again, things are changing and things are starting to happen that can’t be stopped. In search of truth, the things she finds only make her question more. Everything is pointing to the beginning of things. What happens next you will have to read to find out. This is a great story that you don’t want to miss. If you haven’t picked up this series yet, I highly recommend it.
Slash & Burn (Nite Fire Book 4) by C. L. Schneider. I have loved this series and this is not my favorite genre so that says a lot. You could read this as a standalone but I recommend reading them in order to get the best enjoyment. We pick back up with Dahlia who is trying to get her life back in order as she is back to trying to save people. As the lies that have been spun for years begin to unravel Dahlia keeps coming back to the first case involving Ella Chandler. This leaves her not knowing who to really trust anymore. Dahlia figures out that if she doesn't stop this stuff the world could be in jeopardy. Doing back to Dimerea with her team she is met with all kinds of danger. Will Dahlia save not only her City but the world as well. Read Slash & Burn to find out!
The latest book in this fantastic series is full of battles, darkness, and action. The blight that Dahlia has chased since book 1 is gaining in strength and threatening the stability of all worlds, including Earth. She struggles to focus her strengths and new powers, but her progress seems to be frustratingly slower than the increase of the deadly blight. When her friends are injured, she is forced to rely on shadowy contacts that she isn't sure how much she should trust. This novel is back-to-back battles and excitement. Dahlia uncovers a lot of the mysteries at play in Sentinel City and Drimera, and these fuel her ability to fight against the end of civilization. Book 4 is a great continuation of this series, never a dull moment!
Dahlia is back! And Creed finally knows about her! Which brings a new dynamic to their interesting relationship. In Nite Fire: Slash & Burn Dahlia is on a mission to save the realms that are crumbling. Portals between realms are opening that aren’t supposed to. This Dahlia attempts to save as many beings as possible. Will she succeed? What does Creed have to do with all this? After the ordeal or being taken and tortured Dahlia is on a mission. The way the author has written her growth over the 4 books is beautiful. This series is fantastically different. It’s also a series you need to start with book 1. So what are you waiting for? If you like supernatural and crime type mysteries, it won’t disappoint!
What a fun ride getting into the next novel in this series. This may be my favorite one yet! Dahlia is continuing to develop not just her own innate talents, but the forces that be around her. Her world is changing, the humans world is changing, as well as other worlds all around her.
Dahlia is such a strong heroine, it's really exciting to watch her band together with some likely, and some unlikely ties, to do the right thing. She answers to no one, and to everyone. I just love seeing how consistent her core characteristics are, but how capable she is and just how vulnerable she can be when it comes to saving the ones that she loves.
Pick up the fourth book in the Nite Fire series, you won't regret it.
This is just another great book in this series. This book has continued the series and I have been long awaiting this book. I have read the whole series so far and I find it just gets better as it goes on. I like how the author keeps the balance of drama and intrigue. I really was at the end of my chair as I got further into the book. I didn't want to put it down.
I was really interested how the author would carry on after the ending of the last one and I was not disappointed. I really enjoyed the mix of supernatural and human characters. I really like how the author is able to weave the story and branch it to make the series flow and grow. I really cannot wait to read more from this author cause if the ending of this book is anything to go by there is so much more to come.
Nite Fire: Slash & Burn by C.L. Schneider is the fourth book in the Nite Fire series. I would strongly recommend reading this series in order so that you get a full understanding of what is going on. It has been a little while since I read the other books but I found it was so easy to tell back into the story. As soon as I started reading I was straight there with the characters. This book was just as well written and engaging as the rest in the series. This is an exciting story and probably my favourite of the series so far. This author really knows how to capture your attention with a strong story line and such interesting characters. This is a brilliant series and one I would recommend.
Slash and Burn (Nite Fire #4) By C.L. Schneider 4 stars
Another great book in this series and one that I really enjoyed. I think that the author has a great imagination and that really comes across in her stories, they are so creative and really well written. This book picks up with Dahlia and after everything that happened in the previous story I was looking forward to reading more. I would definitely recommend reading the books in order. Dahlia has definitely been on a journey over these books and it’s been exciting following her story along with the other characters. This is a highly recommended series and book – I am definitely looking forward to more.
Nite Fire: Slash & Burn by C. L. Schneider. These books just keep getting better. This author knows how to take readers on a ride they won’t soon forget. From start to finish I had a hard time living in the real world because all I wanted was to sink into the pages of this book. The characters are complex and truly unique, they bring this story to life so effortlessly. The storyline is well written and paced nicely never feeling rushed. I don’t want to give anything away so all I’ll say is go one click this entire series trust me you won’t regret it. Four big stars and highly recommended! Can’t wait to see where the author takes readers next.
This is another great read by the author. Slash and Burn is the fourth book in the Nite Fire Series. This book is full of twists and turns.
Dahlia is once again at it. She's trying to fight what's going on in the world. She has to fight to get back to where she was. The quote I chose for Dahlia is: “I’m not claiming he’s an upstanding citizen, just…Goddammit, Alex, think about this for a minute. You aren’t in the position to go after anyone with power right now. Not after Arno Gant and what happened with Mayor Anderson.”
Highly recommended for Supernatural Fantasy lovers.
This was a new spin on the story and was really interesting. I liked how survival of a species was incorporated into the mystery, along with a disease that was spreading and killing everything. There were new species of characters introduced that I do not remember before and it made the story more suspenseful. There were a lot of twists and turns that I didn’t expect and it made for an engaging story. I look forward to the next one! Nite is, as always, a wonderful BA and shows how everyone has imperfections. A twist in her character arc was interesting and leaves things open to new possibilities.
