I like to change things up! I spent my 20s as a banker and my 30s bringing up small children and running my own fashion brand (Madderson London).
Now, aged 43, I find myself writing, and I wonder why I didn’t do it sooner.
I’ve always loved writing. My daughter Tilly has an old notebook of mine filled with half-finished stories and accompanying drawings. I’ve read for as long as I can remember, guzzling up books so quickly that my mum always protested that I couldn’t be reading them properly. You can see my original, dog-eared version of A Little Princess in my photo. Its protagonist, Sara Crewe, is one of my all-time favourite heroines (alongside Anne Shirley, naturally).
I published my first book, Metamorphosis, in February 2020, right before lockdown happened. It’s a non-fiction book about escaping from our cocoons and living as a butterfly. As lockdown progressed, I found escapism in devouring lots of delicious chick-lit (for want of a better title) and I realised I had a few novels in me too. I have loved every single minute of writing them.
I’ve published my books independently, and I love the freedom it provides. The world of independent publishing is fascinating and so empowering—I’m delighted to share more of my experiences of self-publishing if you’re interested.
I was lucky enough to receive a copy of Sara Madderson’s second novel, ‘Parents and Teachers’, as part of the Random Things Book Tour in exchange for an honest review. I would like to thank Madderson and Random Things Tours for sending me a copy of the novel, published on 19th September 2020.
The novel revolves around the various forbidden relationships between the parents and teachers of two of London’s most exclusive prep schools. At Chiltern House, internationally successful fashion designer, Astrid, is drawn to her daughter’s PE teacher in the hopes of finally moving on from her ex-husband. Astrid’s friend, Natalia, has her life turned upside down when her husband is accused of sexual harassment by a female colleague. And at St Cuthbert’s, Year 3 teacher, Jenna, is caught up in a clandestine affair with one of the school’s most well-known parents, a popular action movie star.
Told through the alternating perspectives of the three women and Callum, the PE teacher at Chiltern House, the narrative develops over the course of the first four months of the new school year, and follows the central characters as they find their desires in direct conflict with the schools’ strict regulations. As Astrid and Jenna’s relationships with their respective partners develop, they are prompted to examine their lives and question what they are truly looking for in a romantic partner. And as Natalia digs deeper into her husband’s undisclosed actions, she is forced to question whether she really knows the man she has been married to for years, and becomes embroiled in anguish of his potential victims.
I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect when I embarked on reading this novel, as it does not fall into a genre that I am particularly familiar with, but I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of characterisation of the three central female characters, and the ways in which Madderson uses their narrative arcs to examine real world issues. I was particularly engrossed in Natalia’s storyline, as it looked at the topic of sexual harassment in the workplace from an innovative perspective – that of the wife of high-profile businessman accused of offering sex for promotions. Natalia is an extremely sympathetic character; she mirrors the suffering of her husband’s accusers, as well as feeling guilty on his behalf, all whilst trying to evaluate what is best for her two young daughters.
The novel is full of emotional turmoil as well as moments of hilarity, which made for a thoroughly enjoyable contrast. Through her relationship with Callum, Astrid begins to embrace her femininity, her sexuality and her independence, after being single for two years following her divorce. However, it is evident throughout the story that her number one priority is the wellbeing of her daughter, Tabby, as their relationship is constantly referred to, and makes for some heart-warming scenes. As well as being a caring mother, Astrid works to develop the impact of her fashion label at home and in America, and it was interesting to see this entrepreneurial side of her character. It is clear that Madderson has used her knowledge of finance and the fashion industry to create a very in-depth and believable portrayal of a highly successful working mother.
Similarly, central to Jenna’s character is her abundant love of teaching and her unyielding dedication to helping children through their education in the best possible way. Her romance with Jackson James, a world famous actor and father of one of Jenna’s pupils, brings up the subject of his dyslexia. It is made clear throughout the novel that children and adults with special educational needs are equally valid as anyone else, and can still go on to achieve incredible feats. I feel that this is a really important positive message to spread, as the readership of this novel is likely to include mothers, many of whom may encounter significant struggles with their children’s education, and thus may find some solace in this subplot.
Overall, Madderson has crafted an addictive, fast-paced and entertaining novel, which successfully highlights a number of real world issues surrounding motherhood, high-profile careers and education. This was the perfect read to escape into, away from my MA studies, the impending lockdown and all the other stresses of day to day life. I realise that, whilst I am probably not the target audience of this novel, I thoroughly enjoy this reading experience and was able to take away the important messages of this story, many of which may come in useful in the future. Therefore, I gave ‘Parents and Teachers’ a rating of 4 stars out of 5.
I enjoyed this one so much more than I thought I would. I'm not a teacher or a parent and this is definitely NOT a guide to being neither 😂.
What a fun and naughty little read! Lots of characters to get to grips with, but once I git used to them all, I couldn't put it down.
There are two expensive, high end schools. Connected by the parents. There's a cheeky hot young PE teacher in one, and a quiet but beatiful teacher in the other. Their lives collide after a scandalous affair that affects both schools.
You have 4 main stories running through the book, and the perspective of Callum, Astrid, Jenna and Natalia. All were very addictive, but my favorite was Astrid and how she handled her men!!
My only disappointment was the epilogue. I won't spoil it for others, for I didn't feel it was at all needed. Sometimes a book is just a book, a story to indulge in, and I saw this as just that. Current affairs could have been missed out in my opinion.
But other than that, Loved it! 💜
Thank you @annecater14 for #gifting me this fun book. I want more from this author! ❤🙂. #randomthingstours
This is my second review of this surprising book. One of Sara Madderson’s first books, it offers several stories in one book. Now an optional prequel to her Love in London series, I consider it a must read.
Firstly, this book is surprisingly complex and nuanced. It includes stories from four FMCs and one MMC. One of the stories of Jenna and Jackson and Honor still breaks my heart a little more than a year later. Jenna gets her HEA in this book (Callum)and Honor does in A Fair Affair, but not Jackson. I still wish he’d find his comeuppance and redemption in a book of his own, but that ship has sailed, according to the author, despite my pleas! This is one last attempt to change her mind!
Another character, Natalia, also finds love in an unexpected way and her extremely wayward ex-husband and she spill over into another Madderson series, Sorrel Farm. I love the interrelatedness of her series!
And that leaves Astrid Carmichael. Astrid is like a lovely fairy godmother throughout both the Love in London and Sorrel Farm series. She gets her HEA in this book too, but she is such a lovely character that weaves her magic and waves her wand in nearly every book in both series, often turning ducklings into swans. Her generosity and kindness is such a sweet addition to each. I have long thought she is Sara Madderson herself…
But then who wouldn’t want to live in Sara’s beautiful world?
I need to rant about this book. In the description, I was told that there was three couples: Astrid (a mother) and Callum (Astrid’s daughter’s pe teacher); Natalia (a mother) and Bex (Natalia’s daughter’s pe teacher); Jackson (a dad) and Jenna (Jackson’s son’s teacher).
Astrid and Callum started a friends with benefits situation very early on in the book, Jenna and Jackson had a ‘relationship’ very early on as well (despite Jackson being married) and Bex’s and Natalia’s relationship went official very late in the book (as Natalia was going through a divorce).
However, I hated the way Callum treated Astrid towards the end of their ‘situation’ once he saw Jenna, and that alone made me dislike Callum’s character, as well as his and Jenna’s relationship. I think it was just the fact that I got so attached to Callum and Astrid’s relationship, that once Callum found the women he saw himself being with forever (Jenna), I got really upset, resented Callum and felt sorry for Astrid.
Although, I’m very happy that Astrid got her happy ending with another man and that Bex and Natalia got their happy ending.

This book centres around two of London’s exclusive prep schools, St Cuthberts and Chiltern House. Both schools have one thing in common, a non fraternisation policy between parents and teachers.
Chiltern house is an all girls school, where were introduced to Astrid, owner of her own fashion brand. Astrid meets PE teacher Callum at a school event and sparks literally fly. Natalia, another parent at the school is a full time mother who spends very little time with her husband, Lorenzo. When Lorenzo becomes the subject of a Me Too allegation, Natalia must take stock of her marriage and find out the truth.
Meanwhile at St Cuthberts, an all boys prep school, action movie star Jackson James has taken a keen interest in his son’s year 3 teacher Jenna. Definitely more than a professional interest.
The chapters alternate between each of the main characters and what is happening in their storyline. Each character must inevitably face the consequences of breaking the rules which could change their life forever. Although each character has their own storyline, each character is linked which brings all the storylines into a satisfying conclusion at the end of the book. At no point did any of the individual storylines feel disjointed. I loved this book particularly because it gave me Gossip Girl vibes. The money, decadence, lives of the elite parents and lives of the people that surround them are thrown into chaos because of the decisions that are made.
This was my first Sara Madderson book and it won’t be my last. This is a brilliantly written book and the storyline worked effortlessly. It was a refreshing read and one I will be visiting again.
I received a gifted copy of this book for an honest review?
OMG! What a delicious, fun and addictive read this book was.
There are four main and strong characters in the storyline, Astrid, Callum, Jenna and Natalia. Each with chapters dedicated to each of them. These well written characters were believable and easily relatable.
I loved the storyline; it's full of drama, scandal, sex and tangled personal lives, which made it a perfect escapist and juicy read. It's been pure pleasure to devour this book.
I enjoyed the epilogue, which brought the whole book up to date with the present climate and current circumstances, giving realness to the characters and storyline, and the impact on lives.
I'd love to read more from @saramaddersonauthor in the future. I loved this one!
As a former teacher, I was drawn to the title of this book but got far more than I expected. This steamy book from Sara Madderson focuses on the illicit affairs of the rich and famous with teachers of two London prep schools.
Set in a world of fashion, finance and movie stars, this is a perfect bit of escapism for lockdown reading. The epilogue brings it bang up to date touching on how the privileged and teaching staff coped with covid.
Title: Parents and Teachers Author: Sara Madderson Pages: 283 Rating: 4/5
A huge thank you to Sara Madderson and Random Things Tours for letting me take part in the blog tour.
Synopsis:
At two of London’s most exclusive prep schools, there is a rule that states parents and teachers must not become involved with each other in a sexual matter. However, these rules are difficult to stick to. A movie star parent at St Cuthbert’s catches the eye of Jenna, a teacher who has lots of potential. At Chiltern house, recently divorced Astrid is still struggling with the fact her husband left her for a younger model. That is until Callum, a gorgeous, Irish PE teacher catches her eye, and he may just be the escape she needs. Natalia, friend of Astrid is a devoted mother but is left in turmoil due to her sneaky, sex pest of a husband and she soon finds that she is questioning everything. All in all, the children are actually the ones who are behaving in this story!
Review: The book description initially caught my attention in this read because it sounded like this could be full of drama that could be both humorous and entertaining, I wasn’t disappointed. I work in a school myself so this added an extra appeal factor to this book, although I can definitely concur, we do not have this type of shenanigans! This read really did look promising and I couldn’t wait to get stuck in.
I instantly connected with the writing style and tone of this book; I enjoyed the author’s writing style straight away. Throughout I found the read to be easy going and laid back, something that you could really enjoy as you didn’t have to over think anything. The story jumps in character perspectives but it easy to follow and clear whose perspective it is. It did take me a few chapters to get my head around who was who but it didn’t take long to get into the swing of this. The chapters themselves weren’t too long, they were quick and snappy which moved the story on at a great pace.
One thing that left me quite amused was how these teachers could face going out on a weekend and carrying on their antics, it was a little bonkers to me but this is what made the story funny, it really did amuse me. I have to say though some of these scenes with the parents and teachers were definitely quite steamy at times, but when these scenes did happen, they were not in your face, the story line had balance.
I really enjoyed some of the characters, Jenna in particular as I was able to connect with her and really feel what she was feeling throughout. I could feel the chemistry between her and Jackson more so than other flings and relationships in this book. I did appreciate how the links were made between the characters and how the story slowly came together, it was very cleverly done. Parents and Teachers was such a fun read, I really enjoyed it, there was plenty of drama to sink my teeth into. This story wasn’t what I expected, it was much better and it had my full attention throughout. The down to earth style, the perfect balance between humour and seriousness and the craziness of it all has definitely left me thinking I need to read more from this author!
I was a little apprehensive about reading Sara’s latest book because I loved her first novel ‘Food for Thought’ so much, I was worried that this one couldn’t be as good, but my fears were unfounded and I loved it!
Parents and Teachers opens with a letter from the headteacher of Chiltern House to it’s staff, the main crux of which is that Chiltern House has a zero tolerance policy regarding sexual relationships between teachers and parents, which clearly falls on deaf ears and sets the tone of what is to come.
This fun and romantic story unfolds from the perspective of four main loveable characters; parents Astrid and Natalia, and teachers Jenna and Callum and we’re given a glimpse into their lives as they all struggle through the highs and lows of their various relationships and careers.
I found the story to be completely addictive, as along with envy inducing descriptions of lavish hotels and expensive restaurants, some very steamy sex scenes and beautiful romances, the writing is so classy and goes beyond the surface of passion and glamour to explore the deeper issues within the female characters’ lives.
I think the beauty of Sara’s books is that they are perfect escapist reads, they transport me into a different lifestyle that I can only dream of. In Parents and Teachers we’re given a glimpse of London’s most fabulous hotels and restaurants such as The Savoy, Claridges and Scotts. What a treat! It’s that taste of the high life and celebrity that reels me in with Sara’s books but what I love most is the technical knowledge and intelligence that runs through her writing. The detail in this book regarding the fashion industry and trading is very impressive indeed.
Sara is definitely now one of my ‘go to’ authors for women’s fiction, although she does make me feel the need to buy several lottery tickets!
This is the second book I’ve read by Sara Madderson and it’s definitely my favourite!
It’s a character driven story which follows the lives of Jenna, Astrid and Natalia with each chapter written from their point of view and I loved how seamlessly their lives intertwined.
At times it felt a little like I was reading a Desperate Housewives episode with so much drama, sex and tangled lives that these women lived. I was totally there for all the gossip though and definitely would have liked to go for a drink with these ladies!
Even though this was brilliant fun to read and perfect escapism, it also covered some important subjects such as sexual harrassment with the whole #MeToo movement and accepting your sexuality as Natalia questions her feelings for her best friend Bex.
I also loved the epilogue which was the perfect ending, bringing it very close to home by including the lockdown situation caused by Covid.
Honestly this book is just so much fun, very raunchy in places but tastefully written and you just won’t be able to put this down as you will get so involved with the lives of each of these women!

Really, the only ones behaving themselves are the kids ...
Parents and Teachers by Sara Madderson tells the story of two teachers from fictitious exclusive London prep schools and the illicit affairs they have with the high-powered celebrity parents.
I enjoyed how the book was split into parts and how each chapter was named after one of the four main characters, delving deeper into their lives and adding some authenticity to the storyline. I felt empathy for the wives, who seemingly had it “all” but in fact were just cast aside by their incomprehensibly rich but misogynistic husbands, and it made me grateful for my happy, and somewhat normal, marriage!
It was an easy, addictive read... I read it in just over 24 hours..... and was very steamy in places, which I hadn’t expected! However, I just found the scenarios too far-fetched and the ending a little too saccharine sweet, almost like it was gift-wrapped at Harrods with a neat little bow to finish it off. Nonetheless I enjoyed it and would recommend it as a lighthearted read.
This story is contemporary, glamorous and topical. The London setting is authentic, and the characters believably crafted and relatable. The plot is simple, in this character-driven story, but it works and makes this a great escapist read.
There are scandals, sex and strong female leads in this novel which is fast-paced and packed with romance. The settings are realistic and knowledgeably written and give the story depth. Told from multi-viewpoints, it's addictive reading, as seemingly unconnected relationships interweave and untangle. The story has a great ending.
If you are a fan of the early Fiona Walker and Jilly Cooper novels, this will appeal.
I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.
This is her second novel and I really enjoy her fast-moving action allied to fascinating storylines. Her deep knowledge of both the City and the fashion industry lend real credibility to the main characters, so brilliantly drawn from different backgrounds. It would be fascinating to see at least some of them re-appear in another novel rather as did Jilly Cooper? The scenes of lust and love were sensitively handled and added to the intensity of the three relationships which were front and centre of the story. Another terrific read and well recommended to entertain during yet more lockdown restrictions across the UK.
Voyeuristic! Have you ever wondered what went on behind the doors of one of London’s elite schools? Well, dig into this book because it’s chock full of fun and games, and not the kind children play. This book is told in multiple points of view, by parents and teachers in one school. Follow Astrid, Callum, Natalia, and Jenna as they all experience love, lust, and loss. This book is steamy, emotional, and exciting! I loved it!
This was beautifully refreshing. I loved how we were able to follow multiple characters’ love stories, and how they entwined with each other. I was a little concerned with how the author was going to pull off the second love interest’s, but Sara did so beautifully. I really was touched by the raw, passionate and real love between all of these characters, but especially with Astrid. God, she’s one hell of a woman and I feel inspired by her strength, independence, and power.
There’s just too much going on here. There are too many stories happening at once and it’s honestly really hard trying to keep up with who’s who. You’re reading 4 different peoples thoughts/stories, which is too much in my opinion.
I really only read a very short amount of the book, but it wasn’t pulling me in because it was so back and forth into each persons story.
Rich and famous parents of school children meet and become romantically involved with teachers. It was very interesting to see the contrast to the every day lives of these two groups. There’s multiple stories being told in this book. Very interesting concept for a book. I liked the stories a lot. Really good characters.
Full of infidelity by multiple characters. The writer tries to glamourise and get the reader to sympathise with a primary school teacher having sleazy hook ups with the famous married father of one of her pupils. Some of the characters are incredibly rich and glamorous and not really relatable. Really disliked this book

Okay seriously, too fucking cute! Loved the multiple POV's, and how they tie into each other's lives. Love the twists and the HEA's. I'd love a little more raunch, and I'm hoping I'll find it in the rest of the series. Loved the women loving women thing. Also, I want to start referring to the phrase agony aunt, cause that's hilarious and I've never heard that term.
Very well written, as usual by this author. What lost stars with me is I didn’t like being on board and happy with the couples she started with, for them to be ripped apart and then placed with other people for their HEAs. Even though it made sense for them to be with the people they ended up with, I liked them together with each other too much still to really root for the new couples.
A good read for people who are into the series recommended highly can’t wait for the next one of the series a good read but quick shaping up to be a great series
These are very interesting POVs, and I really enjoyed them. The way the separate stories intertwined was brilliant. I wish that their stories were longer; I want to know what they are all up to! Amazing book!
Cheating is a huge trigger for me, but this author handles a lot of tough topics so well. It really does remind me of my favorite movie Love Actually and man do I love that movie.
Really enjoyed and looking forward to reading the rest in the collection. It really reminded me of "love actually" first of all being set in London but also with the different storylines and characters and the fact they are somehow all intertwined and connected.
