Following the layout of the superbly written Confessions of a Trauma Junkie, More Confessions of a Trauma Junkie continues to showcase the author's skillful writing talent.
If you are considering a career in the medical field or law enforcement, particularly as a first responder, you must read both of these books. You'll either dig in for the long haul of a serious life-changing career or you'll run off to the local florist to learn to make flower arrangements. These traumatic stories are no joke, told from front and center, no holding back except for out of respect, with the gallows humor needed to continue the work and to allow the reader relief from such unimaginable situations the human body, mind, and spirit experiences.
These are stories of trauma and tragedy experienced by everyday people and the heroism of the first responders who dedicate their lives to saving lives. The books are a behind-the-scenes view of reality. Highly recommend for family members of first responders as these stories will give you an idea of what it is the first responder in your life cannot tell you about their day at work.
I received this book from the publisher and I have volunteered to share my review. All of the opinions are 100% mine.
I really enjoyed the author's writing style because it feels authentic and doesn't sugarcoat the fact that not every case has a good outcome. I appreciated that Sherry and her fellow professionals didn't look down on those they took care of even when the patient was in that predicament because of their own poor choices. And I liked that she freely admitted they sometimes use "black humor" among themselves to cope and decompress. As someone who has worked in the mental health field, I know the importance of self care as well as self control and it's clear this author does as well. It can be easy to become overwhelmed or burn out when dealing with people's pain day after day and that applies whether the person is hurting physically, mentally or both! The book flowed well and patient identities were guarded appropriately and changed in accordance with HIPAA laws to protect confidentiality. The stories were interesting and held my attention throughout. I know not every patient or client is pleasant, and some are not easy to deal with. Some don't have the best hygiene but they are ALL human beings deserving of respect and help when they are hurt. Sherry and her colleagues provided that as well as human connection and compassion. Well done!
