Having grown up in the impoverished Lower City of Jerusalem, Shamira is no stranger to injustice at the hands of the Pharisees. Her family is shunned by many in the Jewish community who believe that their misfortune in life is the result of a secret sin. Rumors are spreading of a nearby healer with incredible abilities; if the stories are true, then the Messiah may be near, and Shamira will stop at nothing in the pursuit of a miracle.
Asa spends every day at the temple under the tutelage of his strict father, an elite Levite priest who enforces the laws without mercy. Between the growing demands of the Roman government and the threats of the Zealots, tensions are high. When Shamira, the girl who stole his heart years ago, asks him to help her find the healer called Jesus, he must choose to either follow in his father’s footsteps or forge his own path.
Shamira knows that both her life and the lives of her loved ones could be changed forever, but only if she can find a way to speak to the man called Jesus of Nazareth before it’s too late.
This book is one that I would compare to a Tessa Afshar or Mesu Andrews book. Jenna wrote a novel that was extremely historically and Biblically accurate. She kept so well to the original story all while adding her own unique flair that made it her own story.
This book is a must-read novel for everyone. Even if you don't like Biblical Fiction, you need to read it. This book was so beautifully written that I honestly could not put it down. There were so many amazing themes woven throughout this book. Themes like faith, hope, and forgiveness.
One of my favorite parts about this book was how the Easter story was so personal. This Biblical fiction makes you fall in love with the characters, including Jesus, more. I honestly felt like I saw Jesus' ministry through a whole new set of eyes and I felt drawn to Him even more. This book will allow you to see the Easter story through the eyes of Jesus' followers who weren't His followers, but rather simple Shepards that heard the story of Jesus' birth from a grandfather. I honestly fell more in love with Jesus and the Easter story through this book!!
The characters in this book were amazing. I loved every single one of them!! Shamira was such an inspiring character. Her faith and love for both her family and Jesus was such an inspiration. I loved her character so much. I honestly aspire to be like Shamira in her level of faith. As much as I loved Shamira, Asa was my favorite character!! He was the bomb and such a cinnamon roll. I would not mind an Asa in my life! ;) He was so caring and I loved how he wasn't afraid to stand up against his father's beliefs and explore his own. Also, I loved how he didn't hold his heritage over Shamira's family but rather saw her and her family as equals to the point that he shepherd in the free time.
I cannot say how much I recommend this book. It comes out in March so be sure to be on the lookout for this upcoming killer novel. It is not one you want to miss!!
*FTC: I beta read this novel. All thoughts are my own. I was not required to write a (positive) review for this book*
I have been waiting for this book ever since I started following Jenna and found out she was writing a book. AND I FINALLY HAVE A COPY IN MY HANDS! It is such a great feeling. I am so, so happy for Jenna and cannot wait for all of you to have Jerusalem's Daughter in your hands. . I adored Jerusalem's Daughter! Jenna's writing style is beautiful, her characters are vivid and unique. Each character has their own personality. I really relate to Shamira. And Asa😍 *sighs dreamily* I want to marry that man. 🤣 And of course, I can't forget Libi. She is so sweet and adorable! I've been wanting more stories about characters who got to meet Jesus in person. So I really enjoyed this one. Everytime Jesus was mentioned I got all excited. 🤣 I love the relationship between Asa and Shamira and much they loved eachother. So sweet! I cannot wait for book two in the Generations of Faith series. . I put this book right up there with Mesu Andrew books. You will not want to miss Jerusalem's Daughter by my talented friend, Jenna Van Mourik. . You did an amazing job, Jenna! I am so proud of you!
"Galilee? You're a long way from home then." Peter nodded his head. "May I ask why?" Asa continued. "Because he asked me to." He said it with such solemnity that Asa was taken aback. Peter didn't even pause to think about his answer.
I'll be the first to admit that I don't read a lot of Biblical fiction. I did, years ago, but it's been a bit since I found one that truly held my attention. "Jerusalem's Daughter" was exactly what I needed.
A story of family, faith, and following God's calling on your life. It's cozy and fluffy and digs deep into the message of Jesus' power. Shamira and Asa were characters that I fell in love with instantly, and yeah, I'm so soft for them together. They're adorable.
One thing I didn't really expect was the total fangirling that I did when the apostles and Jesus appeared on the page. It felt like I was reading a spin-off of my favorite book and I was seeing my favorite characters again. It was weird, but it was so good. Lazarus and Peter caused particularly impassioned reactions, lol!
Overall, it was just really sweet and so much fun. I can't wait to see what Jenna has in store next! 4.5 stars from me!
**I received a copy of this book from the author. A positive review was not required. All opinions are my own.**
Oh Jenna!😭💗 What a wholesome and beautifullllll book!!!! Like, awe, my heart was filled to the brim with love for this characters! I related in so many little ways with the MC, Shamira! As a believer myself, I grew up in a Christian home and her life couldn’t be more relatable! I loved it! From everyday mundane things to crazy ones 🤣, her beautiful spirit of courage and determination just shone through the pages and it was beautiful 🥺💗. I, on purpose, read this book just before bed because it was so cozy and sweet it made feel amazing and I just dreamt of Shamira and Asa and all the gang😂❤️. And Asaaaa!! AHHHH!🥺❤️ He was the sweetest most caring boy in the whole galaxy! I loved how he showed how much he cared and loved Shamira by doing little things for her and just intersecting her path whenever she was out in the market or temple 😂💗 I loved how Jenna captured his boyish and mischievous side hehe. He is so respectful and kind, it’s just ugh.😩💗 Oh and little Libby! She is one of my fav characters! Her gentle spirit will capture your heart completely❤️ She’s a dear. Summarizing all of the above: this books is a wholesome, sweet, filled to the brim with goodness book that you need to pre order now! . .Jennas writing just shines through the pages as it transports you to the busy streets of Jerusalem, the Holy temple, and a cast of fascinating and intriguing characters that will steal your heart completely! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ . . And it’s CLEAN!! 100% clean and in my opinion perfect for YA and adults! Jenna, I can’t imagine the amount of research you must have done to write this magical book but I just want to say THANK YOU for allowing me to review it ❤️❤️❤️ I can’t wait for all your future books! Ps. I might even get some for my church’s homeschool tribe! 💗😂 hehehe . . . . All the above thoughts are my own and weren’t influenced by the author or publisher:) I believe in being honest with my reviews so I can help readers find books they will love
I really appreciate how much care went into the creation of this book: there was not 1 but 2 authors notes with helpful information about the inspiration of the story etc, a glossary of Jewish terms (very helpful and informative), scripture at the beginning of each chapter, and obvious use of scripture in descriptions of events and dialog. I learned a lot about Jewish culture during the time of Jesus' ministry!
I absolutely loved and admired Shamira's faith; at only 16 she has perhaps the strongest faith in her family despite not seeing the Messiah with her own eyes until halfway through the book--I just love when Christian fictional characters are inspiring. It was also really interesting to see how the announcement of Jesus' birth could have impacted one of the sheppards.
The romance between Shamira and Asa was sweet. We get each of their perspectives, which is always a plus in my book.
The way things were written seemed at times for a younger audience, and some of the dialog between characters was a bit too wordy, too on-paper. But this is a debut novel, so I'm sure growth will occur with each book, which is to be expected.
I loved the story, the chance to experience the Passion Week through the eyes of fictional characters, learning about the Jewish culture, and how thought-provoking my reading experience was! Highly recommend if you enjoy biblical fiction and/or want to immerse yourself in those events as prep for Easter.
Content: abuse in a parent-child relationship (emotional, verbal, physical), emotional and verbal abuse of a spouse
Biblical Fiction has become my favorite sub-genre of Christian Fiction, and I’m always happy when I find a new BibFic author to love. When I saw that one of my favorite Bookstagrammers, Jenna Van Mourik, had a book coming out, I eagerly added it to my TBR. While I knew nothing about Jenna’s writing abilities, I felt confident that this book would be a good one–and I’m happy to report that my instinct was correct!
I read this book while in quarantine, and it was the perfect feel-good, uplifting read. It kept me company in my long days of isolation, and I found myself eagerly returning to its pages every day. Shamira is a sweet and relatable character. She doesn’t quite feel like she fits into the mold that society says she must be in, and it often gets her into trouble. But you can see that these things that make her different are meant to be assets for her, things that God can use in order for her to be a blessing to her family and to His kingdom. I enjoyed seeing her growth over the course of the story, and I loved seeing how God saw her innermost fears and desires and made a way where there seemed to be no way for everything to fall together. It reminded me just how much God cares about us, and how He is always working everything together for our good, even when we can’t see it. It may seem like our circumstances just keep getting worse, but what we don’t know is that it is all working together towards a beautiful end!
The romance between Asa and Shamira was SO sweet! Their love, built upon a childhood friendship and slowly growing through the years, felt so real and natural and just makes you feel warm and happy inside. It makes it even better since Asa is such a kind, gentle, and all-around amazing man of honor. His willingness to serve Shamira and her family in any way possible speaks volumes of him. **sigh** You can’t help but love him!
Overall, Jenna’s debut novel is an impressive and beautiful story that you do not want to miss if you’re a fan of Biblical Fiction–or even if you have never read a book like this before. It is well-paced, entertaining and heartfelt, populated by a wide cast of loveable and relatable characters, and woven throughout with the timeless message of Jesus’ saving and healing power! Jerusalem’s Daughter is well-worth all 5/5 Stars!
**I received a copy of this book for review from the author, but was not required to leave a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.**
I really loved this book! Biblical fiction is one of my favorite genres, and I loved seeing Shamira's story. Her and Asa's relationship was so precious, and I loved watching her learn how to use her voice to glorify God.
Oh goodness where do I start with this review? WARNING: it's going to be a long one! Also minor content spoilers ahead but those are hidden :)
Ahhh it was everything I'd imagined it would be - well researched, strong character development, beautiful storyline... Asa.... enough said. 😍 I felt for him, I hurt for him, I rooted for him... ugh all the starry heart eyes! Okay, all the characters have won my heart but especially Asa. Shamira and Asa have a lot to work through if they're ever going to make it as a couple.
Not that they're a couple - Shamira won't get her hopes up because their status differences. When rumours flying around of a Healer reach her ears, she will stop at nothing to see Him for herself. Could He really be the long-awaited Messiah? As the son of a Levite priest, Asa is in a dangerous position even contemplating the thought. But together, Shamira and Asa search out answers and just might discover how finding Him will change their lives forever.
Can we just talk about the research for a second? It's clear Jenna put in so much effort making sure the details were as accurate as possible, and I learned so much about customs - especially weddings - back in Israel in those times. It's hard to write historically accurate while maintaining a good balance between info dump and not enough information, but Jenna pulled it off amazingly!
The only thing I'd say is just a content warning (I don't know what else to call it) as there are multiple scenes with Jesus * * However, Jenna handles all that very delicately, and there are author notes in the back on what is real and where in the Bible certain dialogues were inspired from.
Okay, that's off my chest and now back to the story. Jenna's writing style is exactly what I imagined and I could really see her passion for biblical fiction AND truth shine through the pages. If I had to compare, I'd say this story is on par with Tessa Afshar. I am so excited for her writing journey to continue and can't wait to see what comes next!
*I was given a digital copy of this book by the publisher. All thoughts and opinions shared are mine.
This book was simply beautiful. From the first pages I was drawn to Shamira, her love for her family and her strong spirit. As the story progressed I saw how she grew and I was drawn to her faith so unwavering and true even when she doubted or got into trouble, it was constant through everything. She challenged me. I loved how the story was set to follow the Easter period, it stayed true to the original with the author's creativity put in and I enjoyed every minute of it because it pushed me to reflect on Jesus's love for us, his ministry, his death and resurrection. Asa on the other hand I can relate to I love how he evolved too through the story growing in a privileged home he had the opportunity to study the law and follow in his father's footsteps. I saw his struggle to not just follow blindly but seek out God for himself and wanting to know God for himself. This book was absolutely beautiful and definitely not my best reads this year. Can't wait for the authors next book I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. All opinions expressed are solely mine.
Jenna Van Mourik has delivered a beautiful story with her debut novel. For me, it was all about the love. The love for your family and friends, the love for the Lord, the love the Lord has for us, and of course the love between Asa and Shamira. She easily transported me back to biblical times, and gave my heart much to ponder about what it would have been like to live then. Back when they didn't have the entire bible like we do. They LIVED when Jesus lived! And so believing He was the Messiah was probably difficult for some. Especially when you have those like Asa's father who are so against Jesus (by the way that character portrayal was awesome!).
I think what I appreciated most about this novel was how easily Van Mourik brought me into biblical times. Biblical fiction is such a tough genre to write. You have to stay true to the bible, but also bring in your own creativity, meanwhile making sure that creativity doesn't contradict the bible. Now I've seen Van Mourik's writing journey by following her on social media, but I think even if I hadn't, I would still see the time and energy spend into research by the way the book plays out. From the wedding in the beginning of the story, and the intricate details of that, to the thoughts surrounding those wanting to get rid of Jesus, to the thought of Asa - struggling between believing the Messiah and doing what his father tells him to do. There are so many intricate details that some readers may skim over, but I encourage you to go slow. I took my time with the story so I could enjoy each and every moment.
Jerusalem's Daughter did just what I want a biblical fiction novel to do. It encouraged me, and had me digging for my bible wanting to learn even more. It had me thinking of how I would have reacted to the circumstance of Shamira's family, and if I would truly have believe in Jesus during that time. I want biblical fiction novels that force me to dive in, reflect, and grow closer to the Lord. I know we are going to see VanMourik's name right next to great biblical fiction authors like Mesu Andrews, Tessa Ashfar and Connilyn Cossette, and rightly so. She belongs there.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I took my sweet precious time reading this story. I’m a huge mood reader, and I knew based on the subject matter that I would have to be a SPECIFIC mood to truly get into this story.
Passion week from a different perspective.
Shamira was stubborn, quick to speak, a bit of a “bull in a china shop” kinda gal. Which during this time was not taken very well. 😅 But I loved how her family corrected her with love and patience and after she encountered Jesus her character truly begins to grow and change. But she loved FIERCELY! When she believed in something she believed with her whole heart. And she found ways to use her “rougher qualities” for the Lord. She was a very realistic young teenage women!
I love how Asa changed throughout the story too. He followed along with Shamira for a while because he liked her, but then his eyes were truly opened and he saw the Messiah and truly believed and his life was changed. Asa’s family was so broken, but he found peace and love in Shamira’s home and I loved their welcoming hearts!
I loved being in Jerusalem during passion week, the crucifixion, and the resurrection!! Jenna did a wonderful job telling that story while still telling us the story of Shamira and her family. There definitely is a powerful story within these pages!!
I know so much research, prayer, and heart went into this book and it definitely paid off! It was beautifully done! I am anxious for our sweet Libi’s story next! I rated it a 4/5 star😅
"Shamira," "your words are powerful. That's why you must be careful. There's no telling how many wars a person can start and finish with the tongue."
This book is one almost everyone can relate to. Lessons on faith, on the power of our words, on family, love... God's abundant and great loves shone through the pages of this book with such beautiful intensity that was so heartwarming.
It was amazing to see how Shamira evolved through the story. At the beginning of the story she was this wise, brave but often impulsive and clumsy young woman but as the plot grew she was transformed into a wonderful young wise woman. Her faith was one astounding thing about her.
I received a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion
This debut author brings a special something to the world of Biblical Fiction! I had the pleasure of being a beta reader a year ago and I was so excited to be able to be on the launch team as well. I truly believe that this author brings a sweetness to Biblical fiction that it is hard to describe. These characters have become vivid to me and I have loved seeing the passion week through their eyes. This story has a even moderate pace that slowly allows you to get to know the characters and then brings you to a climax that has forever changed the world. I love seeing real Biblical events through the eyes of everyday people. Shamira is a very strong character that I wasn't sure if I would like right away, but I came to enjoy seeing her grow and mature. I really liked how loyal and protective she was of the ones she loved. I really liked how this book had the unique angle of someone coming out of a loving home life. Often in BF you see characters come from very dysfunctional or abusive family relationships. This book had that sweet, close, family that was a breath of fresh air! And there is Asa, I have always been a fan of his character. He is so sweet, so sensitive that he perfectly balances Shamira. I enjoy seeing the events of the passion week through a character in his position. His growth and journey is my favorite in this story. The scenes of the crucifixion are very well written, they are not graphic, yet powerful enough to give me goosebumps. I love how this book is the kind of book I can give to my teenage sister with no hesitation.
Some BF is heavier in adult themes and I value how this book is one that carries a different tone. 4 stars ! I recieved a copy of this book from the author. All opinions in this review are completely my own and honest.
“Jerusalem’s Daughter” is a debut novel that I will never forget. I was immediately swept into the story from the first page. As a huge fan of biblical fiction authors like Connilyn Cossette, Mesu Andrews, and Tessa Afshar, I was surprised when I found myself having to remind myself that this was not their work, but a DEBUT novel written by Jenna Van Mourik.
Jenna did an incredible job researching the time period, language, and customs of the time period and created relatable characters that sprang to life and drew me in as a reader. I loved the setting of the story, and I enjoyed seeing those Biblical events through other characters’ eyes.
I also spent quite a bit of time underlining quotes from the book that stood out to me. As someone who struggles with anxiety, one of my favorites was, “Tears are all right for now, but when you’re ready, you must change those tears into prayers. God holds the future in His hands, there is nothing for you to be anxious about that He is not already taking care of.”
It is clear to me that God did place this book on Jenna’s heart and gave her the tools to write His message within its pages. I am looking forward to her next book, and I encourage you to check this one out when it releases! You won’t be disappointed!
LOVED: - This big, loving family!!! I always love a big cast of characters and although I had to glance at the family tree (so cool!) for the first 100 pages, each character played a part! - Sabba 🥹💕 His faith was so firm and his understanding of Shamira’s heart was so sweet. - Shamira’s character arc was so real and we were able to watch her find her firm faith in Jesus. - Shamira and Asa’s friendship blossom into something more 😏 - Asa’s character arc too!
LIKED: - How smoothly the biblical accounts were woven in, even the dialogue and scriptural references! Nothing about them felt clunky or choppy. - The Bible study companion deserves notice!! What a beautiful addition to this story and I was able to do it during ACTUAL passion week!
MEH: - Giving Jesus dialogue not in the Bible. - Some dialogue parts felt longer than they should have been and it slowed the story at times. - There is a deaf/mute character in this story, and although she is loved and cared for by her family, she is pitied by her family and viewed as a sickness by the community because of her disability. Literally part of the climax scene is her miraculous transformation and she was only seen as “whole” when she hears and speaks. Although this was the view back then, now we know that deafness is a culture, a people with a shared language and history. This brought the story a whole star down for me (although historically accurate, not appropriate to perpetuate).

Let me first start by saying this story was amazingly brilliant, especially for a debut! The plot and characters were all coordinated together perfectly. I love how much attention to detail there was and the quality of work really showed. The amount of research and time must have been enormous.
So onto the story. I loved Shamira and Asa! Really I loved the whole family but I have to say that the concept of the story was such a great idea! I can't believe such an amazing biblical fiction story came from a brand new author. You can truly see how her love for biblical fiction shines through her work.
Overall this was an amazing book that you won't want to miss. And I am so glad it will be a series!
And if you want to get a good visual of how the characters are, check out Jenna's pinterest board with their aesthetics!
I love the way this book brings the people of Jesus's day to life! Especially the shepherds who witnessed His birth - I hadn't thought about how long they waited to see Messiah take his place, trusting despite the skepticism and mockery of those who heard their story. I look forward to reading the next installment in this series.
This is a great story of faith of character from the time of Jesus! I love that is not a main Bible character! It was well written and the main girl has to learn that her actions have consequences even when they are done out of love! Great job!
Jerusalem’s Daughter is a book that I wholeheartedly recommend. From the memorable cast of characters to the Scripture-based interpretations of Biblical scenes, Jenna Van Mourik has written an inspiring story that is a testament to what is beautiful about the genre she loves.
I wasn’t sure what to expect when Jenna first asked me to read her manuscript. I met her around the time she got the idea for Jerusalem’s Daughter, so I was gradually introduced to the story and characters. Since I was mainly a contemporary genre reader, I didn’t know if I would like a story set in ancient Israel. Over the course of many drafts, revisions, and texting conversations about both, I completely fell in love with this fictional world. I found a story I’ll never forget and a cast who will always hold a special place in my heart. I could talk about both for a long time, but for the sake of this review I’ll only touch on the highlights.
If you don’t know, the crux of this novel rests on who Shamira’s grandfather is: a shepherd who was in the fields when the angels announced Jesus’ birth. Before I read this book, I didn’t understand the cultural ramifications of what it would have meant for someone to believe in the Messiah during this time, or how a belief like that could impact everything and everyone around you. Jenna has created a family of characters that shows you all of those consequences in an unassuming and entertaining way. Cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents all have their roles to play in Shamira’s story, yet they also have an off-screen journey of their own that highlights how well Jenna has crafted her entire cast. When talking about memorable characters, I would be remiss in my position as a reviewer if I didn’t briefly mention the talent with which Jenna has introduced the characters who are based on real people from the Bible. I won’t spoil who you’ll meet, but I will say that everything from their personal histories to their speech patterns are based on Scripture. This is something I appreciated from a faith perspective, and helped immerse me believably in the story as a reader. As for the two point of view characters in this story, Shamira and Asa, it feels as though they are two halves of a whole. We see when they meet—adorably and hilariously, I might add—we watch as they grow, and we champion them as they figure out how to overcome the societal and personal obstacles standing in their way. It’s a romance reminiscent of Anne and Gilbert, with a charm unique to the fields of shepherds. (That charm probably won’t make sense until you’ve read the book, so you’ll just have to trust me for now.) Throughout the experiences of these characters, there is one concrete foundation the book draws from and effortlessly weaves back into every scene.
Every theme in this book stems from one absolute truth—that there is a powerful Lord who loves His people and has a plan better than they can imagine. That truth is evident in the Passion Week, which is when the majority of this story takes place. Through the characters, we are taken on a journey of Jesus’ ministry through a fictional film that personalizes the characters and accounts we read about in the Bible. Jerusalem’s Daughter helped me gain a new perspective on a time I knew little about and used that as a springboard to reinforce truths about God. Jenna takes these ancient events and writes them to feel like a trip in the Imagination Station. It not only reminds us of what happened in the past, it brings us there to experience it through characters we care about. Jenna’s version of the Passion Week makes the real account all the more powerful, especially when we remember how God used sinful and flawed humans—who experienced daily troubles just like we do—and brought about His great purposes.
Jenna Van Mourik’s debut novel is rich in historical fact, memorably lovable characters, and inspiring reminders of faith. It’s an encouraging story of overcoming fear and learning to trust God. This is easily one of my favorite books and I can’t wait to see what Jenna has in store for the rest of the series.
*I was given a complimentary copy of this book, but all opinions expressed in this review are my own.
10/10! I wish I could give this book that many stars because it deserves them all, and more! Jenna did not disappoint, in fact, she blew me away!
I was laughing and crying and laughing again - all the emotions! Jerusalem's daughter was an engaging! I was hooked from page one! (And being hooked from page one is rare for me... maybe page 50, but page one? Jerusalem's Daughter is a diamond in the rough for doing that for me!)
Shamira tugged on my heart and I couldn't help but keep turning the pages. She challenged me in ways that made me grow in my own relationship with the Lord!
It was everything a book should be! Also, the romance was on point! Very sweet... and swoon worthy! I was definitely in love with Asa the moment he started talking.
For history lovers, especially biblical history buffs out there, I highly, highly recommend! The historical context was so well-researched, and thoroughly woven through the pages of the book. I love historical fiction in general, so when an author does it well, without bogging the prose down in irrelevant facts, I just have to praise them! Jenna immersed me in 1st century Jerusalem, displaying the world through the eyes of a young Jewish girl! I was not bored!
Since we are also coming up on Palm Sunday and Easter, I recommend Jerusalem's daughter for someone who wants to more clearly and chronologically understand the events of Passion Week.
This is why I love biblical fiction. It is a medium that allows us as readers and writers to peer into the events of the Bible, in this case Passion Week, to see what it must have been like for the people who experienced it first hand. Just think... the people who saw Jesus that week were our older brothers and sisters in faith! What an honor to experience in small part what they experienced then!
Engaging, fun, romantic... exciting... all words that describe this book! I could list so many more... Jenna's characters were superbly crafted and I literally walked away from it dying for Book #2!
So, Jenna, if you're reading this... I'm praying for a sequel soon!
A wonderful tale set in the era of the Gospel’s! If you enjoy Biblical Fiction, then you might want to check out this debut novel from Jenna VanMurick, Jerusalem’s Daughter. Shamira’s grandfather was one of the shepherd’s who had angels appear too on the night of Jesus’ birth. Now, three generations later, her family needs a miracle, and Shamira has the faith to believe that Jesus is the one who can help. However, that doesn’t change the fact that she’ll get into trouble a few times along the way. *wink*
What touched me the most, was how natural the family interactions felt in the story. The conversations and feelings between child to parent, cousin to cousin or sibling to sibling, were described in the exact way you would picture it happening in real life. Though there were a lot of characters to keep track of sometimes, they all made the book great in their own ways. Loved all the personalities!
I think we have a lot to look forward to from Jenna VanMurick in the future. If you enjoy Biblical Fiction set in the New Testament that features fictional characters in a Jerusalem setting leading up to the Easter story, check this one out!
Jenna Van Mourik’s debut draws the reader into a Jerusalem household filled with love for one another and passion for serving God. Van Mourik follows a brave and bold, Shamira, from childhood to womanhood and shows us her growing feelings for Asa and her growing desire to know the Messiah. Shamira’s curiosity about a man named Jesus comes from stories told by her shepherd grandfather that he had seen angels and witnessed the birth of Christ. Shamira and Asa’s friends-to-more story is complicated by Asa’s role as the son of a renowned Levite. Shamira’s family is of lower standing, but their fervor for knowing God surpassing Asa’s father’s. When Jesus comes to Jerusalem for the Passover feast, Shamira tries to see the Messiah. She believes the Messiah can heal her cousin and confirm her grandfather’s testimony. Will believing in the Son of God fracture Shamira’s family and her relationship with Asa? A delightful story revealing what it is like to believe in the Son of Man and witness a miracle no one saw coming. I received an advance copy of this story, but the comments are my own and an honest opinion of the novel.
I would first like to say how blessed and thankful I am for Jenna Van Mourik giving me this opportunity to be apart of her Book Launch Team for her 1st published book! It means a lot to me because of my love for Biblical Fiction books and their ability to bring Biblical Stories alive through storytelling. As I read this book, I was amazed at how Jenna’s writing style is both unique and beautiful! The author’s hard work and research shines throughout the book! Her book has touched my heart in many ways and did not disappoint me🥰
• Summary- The main characters are Shamira (age 16), Asa (age 18), Libi (age 9), and Rut (age 16). Shamira is the daughter of a shepherd family whose grandfather was called by God’s angles to witness Jesus Christ’s arrival on earth in a manger. Her grandfather tried to spread the news of the newborn messiah, but was shunned by family and neighbors in Bethlehem making them have to move to Jerusalem. That is where Shamira was born and her story began.
The story starts with describing her as a child and how she met Asa then fast forwards to her 16 year old self. Asa has become a close family friend and a regular visitor. However, he is the son of a very strict priest which brings him to many difficult situations throughout the book as he tries to help Shamira. • Overview- This story was very well written and I would say that it is up there with Tessa Afshar and Mesu Andrews books. To be honest, this book relates to me so much that I would have to say it has become my favorite Biblical Fiction Book. It relates to me in a way that I am a growing young adult still trying to find my place in school and later on in the workforce that I feel overwhelmed. As I read Shamira’s story and how she overcame her struggles, it changed how I should view my place as being where my heart is☺️ It sounds simple, but often gets overlooked as we try to strive for many things in this life. It has become clear to me that God placed this book into Jenna’s heart and will help touch many lives like mine.
• Top 2 Favorite Quotes- 1. The words that changed me💚 “She didn’t need to learn her place, for her place would always be where her heart was. Not bent over a fire, not standing silent in a dark corner out of sight, but with the people she loved” (Mourik 48). 2. The meaning of the Palm Branch🌿 “It was just a branch. They grew on trees everywhere. But this branch meant so much more to her. It meant everything: the coming of the Messiah, the faith she had in him that only a few people closest to her understood, her belief in redemption and a brighter future” (Mourik 166).
• Recap- There is so much more I would like to say about how amazing this book is that I am afraid I might spoil it, so you will have to find out the rest on your own😅 I can’t wait for Jenna’s book two in the Generations of Faith series to come out! Jerusalem’s Daughter is coming out in 2 days and I cannot say enough how much I recommend you all to read this book! You will not be disappointed!
* I was given a digital copy of this book from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions shared about this book are mine.
I have been following Jenna Van Mourik's bookstagram account for several years and love her content. I'm so glad I have now read her debut novel, "Jerusalem's Daughter." It is a delightful story set during the time of Jesus' ministry and the start of the early church. It has a good cast of characters, a sweet romance, and sound faith content.
Shamira, the protoganist, is a driven, confident, and fiercely loyal character. I love how deep of a connection she has with her family and how she does whatever it takes to help them. I will admit that Shamira's impulsive behavior did have me shaking my head sometimes. She got into trouble very often and most of it was easily avoidable. We are all guilty of that, though, aren't we? lol.
My favorite character in "Jerusalem's Daughter," is the other protagonist, Asa. He is a smart, thoughtful, and patient character. I love how devoted he is to Shamira and her family. I also loved that he didn't let his abusive background make him a bitter and harsh man, but instead caused him to a be gentle and compassionate towards others.
The romance between Shamira and Asa was lovely. If you enjoy slow- burn romances and/or friends-to-lovers romances, I think you will enjoy their romance, too.
The last thing I enjoyed about "Jerusalem's Daughter," was the faith content. I can tell Jenna Van Mourik did A LOT of research. Scripture is quoted often and the events that happen are accurate to The Bible (except in one or two instances, which are addressed in the author's note).
If you are a fan of Biblical fiction this is one you have to check ou
Jerusalem's Daughter is a standout debut novel! Jenna Van Mourik clearly poured her heart into this story, and it shows on every page! From her meticulous research and smooth incorporation of Scripture, to her thoughtfully crafted cast of characters and captivating plot, Van Mourik shows readers that she is a Biblical fiction author they'll want to keep their eyes on. I know I'm already waiting with bated breath for a sequel to this fantastic story!
Set in the city of Jerusalem during the final days of Jesus' earthly ministry, Jerusalem's Daughter tells the story of Shamira, a young woman whose great passion and deep love for her family lead her on a journey in search of a miracle, a journey that will change not only her life, but the lives of all those she loves. Though Shamira and her family are fictional characters, Van Mourik did an excellent job of weaving their story into the Scriptural events of the Passion Week. It was so interesting to see the events of Jesus' Passion, Death, and Resurrection through the eyes of an ordinary girl who got to be a witness to it all. While this story could be read at any time of year, it does hold a particular poignancy when read during Holy Week and throughout the Easter season.
If you're looking for a story with fun and colorful characters who become like friends, moments that warm your heart, and a reminder of the power of faith and truth in God's plans, look no further than Jerusalem's Daughter! You won't regret checking it out!
Jerusalem's Daughter is the debut novel by Jenna Van Mourik. It’s very beautifully written and the way Jenna wove her story around the scripture was brought the Easter story to life in a huge way.
From the time I began reading the book and was introduced to the characters, I was in love with them – well, most of them! Their stories brought the Word of God to life in a real way – you felt like you were right there with them experiencing everything – like you were friends or a part of their family. When they felt happy, you were; when they felt hardships and triumphs, you experienced it with them.
Jerusalem’s Daughter is a book that picks you up and sweeps you into the story, into the world of the characters and it’s so, so, so very hard to put down. If it were not for work and other responsibilities, I could have very easily read this book in one or two sittings.
Lessons I learned before were brought back to me while reading this book. God spoke to me and into my situation in new ways while reading this book. This book is inspiring and so much more that I cannot, right now, find the words to describe it.
It is easy to forget but amazing to remember that this is a debut novel. Jenna’s writing is truly a gift from God. Brilliant! The way the story is interwoven with scripture is as if these events occurred just so she could write this book.
I give this book 5 stars and will definitely be purchasing paper copies for myself and to give as a gift to someone else. I received an advanced reader's copy for Jerusalem's Daughter from the author for my honest review.
The main character is not your typical heroine let alone humble, submissive, and obedient daughter of biblical times. It was quite fun to read about a girl with such strong beliefs and emotions that seemed incapable of restraining herself from impulsively acting on them. It was refreshing and scary quite honestly. I feared she would be stoned or disowned at times but was relieved to see that she was the product of being loved unconditionally by her father and the closeness of her entire clan.
The story and characters are so very well developed. I loved watching the growth of the younger characters and then their being able to see the actual struggles of the adults as they were able to see them more clearly as they grew closer to adulthood themselves.
I loved the character of Asa as a son and student of the law under his father, a levitical priest, combined with an understanding of the scripture in its entirety, not just the law. His tenderness and tenacity for God's truth revealed the source of his understanding of God as a loving, forgiving, and merciful God in addition to being a just God.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and believe you will too.
