Shadow Strike #2

Last Target Standing

Rate this book
After the largest terrorist attack in US history is narrowly foiled, the sole enemy survivor has only one name to provide his interrogators: Ghulam Samedi, a fugitive hiding in the rugged mountains of China’s Xinjiang Province.

As part of the CIA’s newly-minted targeted killing program, David Rivers and his team are tasked with assassinating Samedi.

But once they are inside China, there will be no backup, no air support, and no escape—only a handful of local assets with dubious motivations. The location is known for its opium smugglers, violent separatist movement, and heavy deployment of Chinese secret police.

Which is exactly why Rivers’ team of former mercenaries was assembled for this covert operation. They are unilateral, unattributable, and if things go wrong, utterly expendable.

As Rivers embarks on his most challenging mission yet, he will stop at nothing to hunt down Samedi…the last target standing between him and a sinister conspiracy with global implications.

The exciting return of David Rivers and Team, a crew of highly skilled former mercenaries assembled together for covert operations where Anything can, and usually will, go wrong! They are expendable, deniable, and unknown as soon as they are dropped in a mission, not honored by the public if things go right, and left on their own when things go wrong.
The sole survivor of the attempt at the largest terrorist attack on the United States has been located, hiding in the mountains of China. And the CIA turns to it's new killing team to go after this man and end him. They are dropped near China, and then on their own. No support, no back-up...This team must use their different skills and belief in each other to get through and finish this mission their own way!
This author knows of what he writes and it shows in every line, you feel the tension among the characters every moment, the dark of the forest at night, the buzz of bullets whizzing by. This fast paced thriller will not let you put it down from the start through every battle and wild moment until you reach the story's end. An author that improves in every book he writes, a story that will rip through your heart, with characters that you feel you really know...I received an ARC of this from the author and offer you my honest thoughts and feelings in this review.

Jason Kasper's "Shadow Strike" books are the finest paramilitary espionage and assassination thrillers in the genre today. More realistic and action-packed than Vince Flynn or Brad Thor novels, with the story focused solely David Rivers' infiltration into China's Xinjiang province to terminate a terrorist connected to the previous book, while his CIA controller, Duchess, a standout character, manages the logistics and complications from Langley. No fluff, filler, or unnecessary subplots here. Meanwhile, seeds are gradually being planted for what is shaping up to be a larger, overarching storyline in this series. Extremely well written.

The second novel in Jason Kasper's Shadow Strike series, Last Target Standing, is a thrill-a-minute action novel that picks up some time after the previous entry in the series, The Enemies of My Country, leaves off.

David Rivers and his team are tasked with the Mount Everest of covert ops: infiltrate western China, navigate Uyghur territory, and capture Ghulam Samedi, a militant linked to the 4 July terrorist attacks detailed in TEoMC. They are without any official support, and should they be caught or killed, they will be fully disavowed as deniable assets. The risks are high, but so is the reward.

As always, Kasper does a phenomenal job painting the picture and putting the reader in the characters' shoes. The action is crisp and kinetic, as to be expected from a man with Kasper's pedigree and skill. The banter is witty and hilarious, which has come to be a hallmark of Kasper's work. It was a thrill a minute, and even knowing there are subsequent entries in the series, he had me wondering if the team would actually make it out with mission completed and no casualties.

This is one of the finest thriller novels I've read in some time. Very highly recommended and I'm looking forward to the next entry in the series!

Book Review – While ‘advance’ reading via NetGalley Jason Kasper’s second book in the Shadow Strike thriller series, “Last Target Standing,” I kept hearing the 1961 song by singer Chubber Checker, “....Come on let’s twist again” because of the multiple risky and intense military struggles that filled this non-stop, fast-paced action thriller that I couldn’t stop reading until I finished it! Kasper’s former Army Ranger and Green Beret experiences glowed brightly in this formidable and vigorous action fiction novel. Kasper’s writing made this read feel ‘real’! The plot and storyline flowed smoothly, albeit very quickly; the highly skilled and very lethal special ops guys worked together seamlessly; the rugged mountains of China’s Xinjiang Province geography, politics and other characters were vivid and rich; the fight sequences and how they played out were realistic; and the “bad guys” just weren’t the average regular bad guys, but Kasper created some sinister characters that brought more menacing and threatening appeal to the story. I first read Kasper’s “Enemies of My Country” and listened to the short story “The Ranger Experience” via audiobook and now. I’m a big fan! I wholeheartedly recommend this series and will purchase any future hardcovers for my book collection. Good stuff by an actual Special Forces warrior turned ‘awesome’ action-thriller author. Thanks to NetGalley and Severn River Publishing for providing me an Advance Reader’s Copy (ARC) of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Kasper writing continues to get better as the missions Rivers' team partake get more intense. I enjoy reading these military thrillers written by actual Special Forces warriors, they've been there, done that and it shows up in their writing. Tactics and combat scenes are frighteningly realistic, you can hear the bullets whizzing past your head, and I've caught myself more than once starting at an unexpected noise safe in my home. This team is awesome! They are not superheroes, they are guys we know and have served with. They aren't perfect and don't always follow the rules and make the right decisions, but damn if they don't get the job done and find a way to complete their mission. My only gripe is that I wish they had a couple more shooters on the team, but I'm enjoying the makeup of the team so far. This story flows directly from the previous novel exactly like his previous series, if you find something that works, don't mess with it. I find when my heart rate speeds up while I'm reading, I'm definitely reading the right books; and Kasper makes my heart race reading his stuff. I wholeheartedly recommend this series (and the previous one) and have purchased his other stuff because I'm sure he will not disappoint.

Last Target Standing by Jason Kasper
A David Rivens Thriller (Shadow Strike #2)

Riveting Read ~ Could not put it down ~ Read into the wee hours of the morning as I had to see what would happen and how the story would end!

What I liked:
* Stepping into the shoes of military men and seeing, feeling, and experiencing an Op as if I were there, too.
* The team: five intrepid, highly skilled, lethal, dedicated, admirable, and intriguing men that worked together seamlessly.
* The location and learning more about the geography, people, and politics
* That it felt real
* The fight sequences and how they played out
* Being able to see this story as if it were playing out on a big screen in a theater
* Wondering if it will become a movie…it easily could be one
* The plot and writing
* That the “bad guys” were not the usual ones
* The split-second decisions required and seeing how the team made those decisions
* Hearing David’s first-person experience and a more omniscient version of the other four team members experiences
* Seeing what was happening back at Langley while the team was on the ground
* Hearing about David’s family in memories he shared/flashed back to
* The setup for the next book in the series

What I didn’t like:
* Exactly what and who I was meant not to like…
* Having to wait for book three in the series

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series/by this author? Definitely

Thank you to NetGalley and Severn River Publishing for the ARC – This is my honest review.

David and his suicide team are sent on another thrilling adventure by the Duchess after a potential terrorist attack. The name of their fugitive, Samedi, who proves to be quite diligent in his resources and his intelligence. The original goal was to assassinate Samedi, but once the team realized there was no documentation or evidence, they had no choice but to capture him! The only problem was, they were in China, where they should not be and could not get backup. Their path back for exfil becoming much more challenging, they had to navigate enemy territory with a loyal (paid) local to help them through the countryside. Numerous encounters that could have lead to their deaths and capture, but the team kept finding a way through!

This was a great read in the Shadow Strike and David Rivers series! I highly recommend and am excited to read the next books as well!

I think his book was better than the first one but this author still has a tendency to drag certain segments on. Way too much information at times. Overall, some good characters and storyline but again, this book could be cut in half.

2.5 stars. I really enjoyed the first book in the series. The characters had such a strong brotherly bond and I loved that. There was certainly more of that in this book, but I found the plot to basically be cookie cutter from the first book. If this was a genre I really enjoyed, I think I would like that writing style a lot more. But this is not my typical genre, so I found it to be very boring. I DNF'd around 80% because I just didn't care what happened. I tried to push through because of how much I liked the first book, but I just couldn't. I would revisit this in the future if the mood struck though. I do love these characters and I am sad to leave them behind.

4.5 stars 🌟

I was giving the opportunity to read this ARC, but then realized that it was the second book in the series (Actually, if we are being totally honest, I found out that this is the second series featuring this male protagonist - David Rivers. There is a prior series of 5 books about his life prior to this series, but...I digress) Why do I mention this? Well, because I have this weird thing where I can't read a book if I know it is part of a series without going back and starting the series first. Weird I know...but, it is what it is.

So, I read the first book in this series and was glad I did. This second book starts off with a bang and there is not really a lot of time given to get a first time reader up to speed. A lot of the character development has been done in the first book and it has been done very well. These men - this team - have a very tight bond, and it is one that has been honed in the fire. They each not only have their purpose on the team, but they have extremely individual personalities and one of the best things is the way they gel as a team.

This book is a direct follow on from the ending of book one. The team is following up on the one lead they were able to get from the head of the terrorist group that attempted the largest terror attack in US history. I will say this...this book starts with a bang, and does not let up. It is filled with non stop action and definitely keeps the reader (and by reader, I mean me) on their toes.

Bottom line, I enjoyed it tremendously. There is a very realistic relationship between the leadership of the CIA back in the Ops Center who have to walk a very fine line to deal with the political ramifications of certain actions, the extremely arrogant and pompous Senator who only seems to care whether certain actions will make him look good or not and then the reality of the team on the ground who is for the most part expendable. That is, unless they can procure something that all of a sudden makes them LESS expendable. The ability of the Team Leader to manage the communications between the team and the folks back in the US is a thing of genius. The ability of this team to achieve ANY mission objectives, given the support they have been given is to be appreciated. Granted, their team logo is "Fast and Loose" and they definitely live to to that motto.

If, like me, you are a fan of books featuring Tier One operators (the excellent series by Andrews and Wilson comes to mind), then this will be another series to add to your list of good reads.

I will admit, since this is my first series by this author that a lot of the reviews mention the fact that there was a new narrator for this series than there had been from the prior 5 book series and he was not well received. Many, many comments. But, since I had nothing to compare it to, the narration was fine for me. It wasn't great and the narrator has a really bothersome habit of reading while articulating each syllable of each word that makes it sound like you are reading with out contractions - but after a while, you get over it because there is so much action going on, you just really care about what the heck is happening in the story.

This book does have a completed story arc, while at the same time setting up the next book in the series. In the very last paragraph, it becomes clear that David's team has a new lead to follow as they keep going up the chain looking for the mastermind of the attempted terror attacks.

Sign me up - I'll be clicking on the "Buy" button the minute the next book is available.

Thank you to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC. The reviews above are mine and mine alone.

Last Target Standing by Jason Kasper is a gripping military thriller that follows David Rivers, a former Army Ranger-turned-elite operative, as he and his team embarks on a perilous mission into western China. Tasked with infiltrating a shadowy insurgent network, Rivers must pose as a mercenary and navigate a web of deception, betrayal, and danger. His goal: eliminate a high-value target whose actions threaten global security. As Rivers works to uncover the enemy’s plans, he and his team finds themselves drawn into a deadly game of cat and mouse, where trust is scarce, and every decision could mean the difference between survival and death.

This gripping thriller is a perfect blend of high-stakes action, compelling characters, and a plot that keeps you guessing until the very end. Kasper’s military background shines through in the authentic and vivid depictions of combat scenarios. The attention to detail adds a layer of realism that draws you deeper into the story, making you feel as if you’re right there in the thick of it.

The pacing is relentless, with every chapter ramping up the tension and leaving you eager to see what’s next. The twists and turns are masterfully crafted, keeping the reader engaged and on the edge of their seat throughout. What sets Last Target Standing apart is its balance of intense action and emotional depth. Kasper doesn’t just deliver a thriller; he creates a narrative that explores themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and the human spirit in the face of adversity.

Highly recommended for anyone who loves a smart, fast-paced, and thoroughly satisfying thriller. Five stars all the way!

If you've read everything that Jason Kasper has written you won't be disappointed by his latest David Rivers book. I have and I wasn't. Again a 5 star thriller from the master of thrills.
"Last target Standing" begins from the near disaster of the terrorist attack on Washington, only partially averted in the first Shadow Strike book.
Now it's revenge time with David Rivers leading his team on a mission to assassinate the terrorist mastermind who threatened the Rivers family and return with intel on future plans and US potential targets.
The setting is pretty much the roof of the world - all real places - and Jason Kasper's superb writing skills make each location, person and event live in then mind long after reading. Add in Washington politics, the steep and unforgiving terrain the team has to overcome and the fanatical opposition they face, and their leader's callsign - Suicide Actual - seems well justified.
Jason Kasper's places, people, and the perils his characters face come through as very real and quite unforgettable.
If you decide to join Jason's world for the first time "Last Target Standing" reads well as a stand-alone but coupling with the first Shadow Strike book - "The Enemies of My Country" - could be well worthwhile. The added bonus is that the third book in the series arrives in December - and I for one can"t wait

Jason Kasper has made me a David Rivers fan for life. Move over Jack Reacher! Thanks to Jason I have another hero to follow in literature!!
Jason wove this suspense novel extremely well and his description of every detail makes me feel like I’m on the team trodding along the mountains and through the desert with them! When the ending of the book was reached I actually had an outburst that was like… Noooo! How could it be over? That’s a first for me! So, I’ll have to wait for the next installment, Covert Kill, comes out and I’ve emailed him saying, “Don’t leave me hanging like this next time…please!”
Having read all the David Rivers American Mercenary books, I think I like this series more.
I guess I’ll just binge read the Spider Heist series until the latest book arrives.
Also, you can follow him on Facebook. He’s quite the whiskey enthusiast!

I began reading Jason Kasper over the last year and have become a big fan. I've jumped around his different series but I began with Enemies of My Country and enjoyed it so much I went back and began his American Mercenaries series. What sticks out to me is how much Kasper has grown and improved as a writer. Last Target Standing is the best thing he's written and I don't think it's particularly close. It's a fast paced thriller with a tight plot and a cast of characters that Kasper manages to play off each other incredibly well. The only gripe I have is I finished it too quickly.

I want to thank Severn River Publishing and NetGalley for allowing me to read an advance copy of Last Target Standing.

Last Target Standing: A David Rivers Thriller (Shadow Strike Book 2), my second read from author Jason Kasper. Reminiscent of Tom Clancy or Dan Alatorre's writing, a page-turning military thriller. I don't restrict myself to a particular genre. I'm a sucker for anything with memorable characters and a story that keeps me guessing and a plot that keeps me turning the page & this book did! "I received a free Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more from this author, in fact Covert Kill: A David Rivers Thriller (Shadow Strike Book 3) is next on my TBR list. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

The team is sent to China to find out who was behind a thwarted July 4 attack on the US. After hiking for days in th cold of winter in the mountains of China, the team finds that the only way to discover who was behind the attack is to take a leader of the Muslim sect being persecuted by the Chinese, back to the USfor interrogation. The plot thickens, the captured terrorist is rescued by his followers, and he escapes to parts unknown. Meanwhile David is lying to his boss in the US about their plan to move toward the exfil point when they are really trying to recapture their prisoner. The trek to freedom is filled with suspense. ENJOY!

If non stop danger, military skills, mayhem ,death, and unforeseeable excitement are something you would like to read this series by Jason Kasper fills the bill!

This book and book number 1 were both hard to put down. The team of operators and their talents and quirks make you hope that in real life there are guys like this on your side. There are tense moments, funny moments and non stop action that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout!

If you like reading about clandestine military action books, read these David Rivers books and buckle up your seatbelt.

Clandestine operatives are sent into China via secretive routes/methods to assassinate an enemy of the United States. As the action continues, things begin to go wrong, and eventually it becomes a journey to return home unscathed. Hurdles, detours, battles, and betrayals abound while minimal support is provided from home in this non-stop thriller. I received an advanced digital copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher and voluntarily provided an honest review.

Another winner by Jason Kasper. We, the readers, are once again on the ground with the group, fighting the bad guys. We get to be thrilled, frustrated, bored and introspective, just as they are. The guys even have to subjugate themselves to another military group!!! (Gasp! Is this possible? LOL) But the guys get their action in the end and the ending is a firecracker! Can’t wait for the next installment! Write faster Jason!!

Holy crap

I have read all the David Rivers books. They are all great. But, this one was unreal. It was a start to end mission from the perspective of the team. Details were amazing and never boring. I have never read a book with this much action and continous moving and moving and moving to the final extract. This was a different type of book all together. What a great read. Just outstanding.

Deep in my seat suspense and action

Operational page turner with loads of veritable action. Not focused on technology but on leadership and interesting personalities. The palpable tension only relents long enough for both the reader and the protagonist to imagine the worst of what could come next.

Ripping good yarn that I definitely will be sharing with my thriller fans and friends.

Rough land in China...

For two Special Forces men whose mission was to intercept in China a man who was a leader for the Chinese government. The men had to find the man and get him back to the landing site by time certain! In spite of obstacles galore, they were able to get to the helicopter as it was about to take off! Fantastic story of men overcoming all odds to achieve their mission!

I was holding my breath more than once...

The five man team at the center of this timely saga went from one mission disaster after another but always seemed to find their way out of the dire situations they found themselves in. The plot was for the most part believable. Enjoyed getting to know the characters better after being introduced to most of them in the first book of this series. I am looking forward to the team's next assignment.

FAILURE NOT AN OPTION!

After a disaster on the 4th of July killing many in America, the team was sent to find the mastermind. Dangerous terrain over snow covered narrow mountainous paths at night led to some scary incidents that included a fall that was so well described that my heart beat as if I was the one that fell! Definitely this series is written for the reader to feel involved! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!

I love the Shadow Strike series. The dysfunctional team just works well when called into action. On the hunt for a terror cell deep in a Communist country, getting in covertly is hard and getting out is impossible. Their team is on their own and expendable in a treacherous wasteland in the middle of Asia. A tense and bloody mission, the team is dropped into the meat grinder and chewed up. Kasper is amazing!
