Thank you NetGalley and New Harbinger Publication for this arc in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed this book and will use it as a reference book in the future. It is filled with good information. The book is organized by mindfulness tools and how to apply them to real life. The mindfulness tools covered include: the observer tool, the breathing tool, the grounding tool, the acceptance tool, the choice tool, and the kindness tool. The author then cover understanding rest and digest, which I loved because I think the vagus nerve is often overlook. I especially enjoyed the grounding in nature content. The author does a wonderful job of explaining earthing and how the digital world is affecting us. Each chapter offers thoughtful content and tools. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in developing a mindfulness practice. If anxiety is something that you suffer from, this is an excellent resource.
I highly recommend Breath In Calm (https://www.amazon.com/Breathe-Calm-B...) to anyone who is looking to understand and appreciate the different techniques of mindful breathing and how each can cultivate inner peace. Domonick Wegesin succinctly organized the well-researched content into tools with step-by-step practice guidance to transform our own personal relationship with our anxiety. Each step along the way, Wegesin invites his readers to befriend anxiety by bringing focus, attention, and awareness to the present moment and to be in tune with our current physical and emotional states. With content so relatable, easy to use, and shared, I know everyone in my circle as well as my patients will find it helpful!
I’ve read a lot of self-help books about anxiety over the years, but this is one of the best. I’ve been using a lot of these techniques throughout the year to change my relationship with my anxiety and I truly have been noticing a change in myself, for the better.
If you struggle with anxiety at all, I’d highly recommend this book - it’s a short little number but the advice is so wonderful - I wish my therapist had told me of all these strategies years ago, when my anxiety was at its worst. I borrowed this one from the library, but I’m going to go out of my way to buy it, just so I can re-read certain chapters and passages when times get tough, or just as a refresher - the advice in this book is just that good.
I’m so glad I found this. Really thankful for all the nuggets of wisdom in this book.
Fantastic book if you need to calm your mind and body. The book focuses on a practice that combines mindfulness, neuropsychology, yoga, breathing technique, and a great deal of research (the author is a former professor of neuropsychology at Columbia University in NYC, and a long time teacher of yoga and mindfulness who trained with Jon Kabat Zinn). I also loved the book for its guidelines for managing the worry and pressure that exists from living with technology and media in our everyday often high-pressure lives. It is a fast read, gentle and accessible, but powerful in its effect. I think anyone who needs to make time for themselves, to heal and process from living in troubled times or a difficult past, or who wants to feel healthier and calmer will find it a sweet life-changing book.
Breathe in Calm offers valuable and easy-to-understand guidance for those who suffer from anxiety AND for others who experience just the "regular stresses" of life. I don’t consider myself anxious, but while reading the book quickly realized how much I (and anyone, really) could benefit from using the tools that are shared.
In a non-judgmental, positive tone, Wegisin gives a variety of examples of how anxiety negatively impacts our bodies and lives. He also offers a myriad of practical techniques to reduce our stress. He shares research findings from a variety of disciplines, including physiology, psychology, and mindful meditation. Wegesin makes complex topics approachable and offers us hope for a calmer, more enjoyable life.
I took my time reading breathe in calm to honor the ask of the author and do the exercises. While I was more successful with some of them, shout out to the breathing tool, I tried in some way, all of them. The book is written in easily digestible chapters with questions throughout that helped me understand what I just read. The exercises were accessible & had a great range of techniques to practice. It also helped me to find different ways to incorporate mindfulness through my day. I keep a copy at my desk to not only remind me to breathe but also for easy reference when my feelings are spiraling.
Breathe in Calm is essential reading for anyone suffering from anxiety. In it, Dr. Wegesin explains in clear and concise language the evolutionary purpose of anxiety and its deleterious effects on the body. He then provides tools to help alleviate anxiety. Each section contains practical ideas for incorporating these tools into one’s daily life. Breathe in Calm also has links to guided meditations which, in themselves, are well worth the price of the book. Thank you, Dr. Wegesin, for sharing your expertise in such an encouraging and compassionate way.
I found this book at the local library and decided to give it a chance. So many books like these end up being oversimplified, anecdote-based, and don’t covey useful information. Breathe in calm was refreshingly different. For many of the techniques, it provided information on research that supports the technique, including the neuroscience behind why it is effective. Each technique also built upon the prior technique to create an understandable and through framework. I highly recommend it.
There isn’t a soul on earth who can’t benefit from Domonick Wegesin’s gentle and holistic approach to addressing whatever form our anxieties take, especially in our excessively anxious times. Breathe in Calm offers a nourishing recipe for self-compassion that is both rational and relatable, equal parts science and storytelling. It’s exactly the “peaceful pause” this lovely book recommends--a welcome respite from reflexive doomscrolling, and one that I’ll return to repeatedly for relief.
This short book is full of accessible introductory information about mindfulness for anxiety relief. The book is full of mindfulness tools, and the author first explains the science behind each tool and then provides a guided practice. I had encountered most of the topics in this book before, but I greatly appreciated having them all together in this book and found it to be very helpful.
I suffer from anxiety. I am always looking for tips to help ease it. This book was really good, It was an easy read. Some of the things I knew already. There were also new tips and i tried some of them, which helps. I plan on trying more. . I am grateful that netgalley let me read this in exchange for an honest review.
This book was an easy read. It explains everything plain and simple and the exercises are helpful. But I already knew most of what was told in the book so it wasn’t a real eyeopener. Nevertheless very informative if you are new on the subject.
An excellent introduction to how to control one's anxiety with easy-to-follow instructions for taking a "peaceful pause" whenever you need one. Thanks to NetGailley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
This is likely a great book. Don't listen to me. I don't have anxiety; I just teach yoga and mine these books for techniques to use in class. I've heard all of these before, but this book is exceptionally good at laying them out in a clear and efficient format.
Helpful information for those who suffer anxiety, very simple and easy to do exercises. Thank you Netgalley, New Harbinger Publications and the author for this eARC in exchange for my honest review.
