It contains enough information to be interesting and educational without getting too overwhelming. The writing is accessible for its target audience. I think this book contains the minimum amount of information required to feel like you understand the feminist movement but my hope would be that it would inspire teens to delve a bit deeper into this important topic.
Shout out for the Kate Sheppard mention, albeit brief.
I'm not sure I came out of this book with a better definition of feminism than - it's everything. The book has a broad and far reaching scope - maybe a little too broad at times.
However...I liked it.
I loved the history and the small bios of the major players in the feminist movement (even before it was a movement). I loved the modern take - how feminism has broadened to include people of color (since it didn't always), and bi, trans and lesbian women.
The book is intriguing, inspiring, and fun.
I don't know that I came out of it thinking any different about anything.
Ultimate message: You know your brand of feminism? It's perfect. But so is everyone else's brand. Respect that.
Ah Feminism. I would have loved a book like this as a teen, and since this is targeted for that age group I sure hope they all get their hands on a copy. It's a really good primer and covers a lot of ground, including, well, "the history, pioneers, theories, questions, arguments, and daily reality of feminism today."
This was so informative and educational. I didn't even know there were waves of feminism, I guess it had to start somewhere, right? I also like how it wasn't biased, just told you all the facts. Took me forever to finish as I'm not one for nonfiction but was totally worth it.
I thought that this book was quite interesting as it provided a short introduction to many topics in the complex world of Feminism. As someone who does not know an awful lot on the topic, I found it was a great starting point. It is, however, just that, an introduction. To be fair, the book is not claiming to be anything more, but for someone who is looking for a more in-depth read, this is not the book for you. I quite enjoyed the format of this book, as the bold, bright and minimalist artwork made the text for interesting and engaging. I was also very happy to see that the people in these illustrations were of a variety of races.
The short biographies sprinkled through this book were great and covered a variety of women from different countries, time periods and ethnic backgrounds. I did feel though that overall the book did focus a lot on Brittish and American champions and could have had a more global coverage.
In conclusion, I would say that this book is a good starting point, but should not be anyone’s last stop. More reading is required on my part, to explore this topic further (keep an eye out), but I hope that you will enjoy this book as much as I did.
This book presents complex ideas in an easy-to-read format. And it captures so much information in so few words, making it accessible for anyone interested in learning about feminism. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to expand their understanding of feminist concepts and discussions. A fantastic read that inspires and educates. Easily 5 stars.
This is a really, truly wonderful and accessible book for teens wanting to learn more about feminism. Each doublespread discusses a different topic, ranging from suffragettes, women's work history, the pay gap, and riot grrrls. Interspersed are one-page biographies and a photograph of the lady in question on the recto--at first, I was a little skeptical of how at first the women in question were mainly white or the usual women of color (Sojourner Truth, Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman--all great ladies, but there are many other women who also did other things!). Even some women who had biographies--such as Gloria Steinem--had their partners in crime (usually women of color) glossed over. But as we moved further into the present, we were able to see a much larger variety of women, including many I had never heard of before!
I also really appreciated the layout--it was fun, colorful, had great design, and was accessible. Nothing was too jumbled, and it all made sense together and separately.
Moreso, I appreciated the fairly neutral stance that it took on discussing some of the in-fights in feminism, which I do think is fair. When discussing some of the hot topics in feminism, I really can't agree with taking sides, since there's usually a lot of good reasons for both sides that can create dialogue and understanding between varying opinions. Take for example, some of the hottest topics right now, such as gender activism and sex work/prostitution. Both sides were explained (though I think there was a little bias), and in both sides being explained it made a much more equal playing ground for feminist beginners to form their own opinions and begin their own research.
Overall, I found this enjoyable and engaging, and certainly worth reading if you're interested in how feminism has transformed into what it is today.
Feminism is the support for political, economic and social equality between the various genders. Throughout the years, feminism has adjusted its definition and focused on various aspects in waves. Currently, we are in what most people call the third wave of feminism, which is focused on intersectionality --- the recognition of how different how different forms of discrimination can affect one’s life. Many authors, philosophers and psychologists have written about and discussed feminism. For example, FEMINISM IS… is a book by Alexandra Black, Laura Buller, Emily Hoyle and Dr. Megan Todd and has a foreword by Roxane Gay --- a well-known author of books like BAD FEMINIST.
FEMINISM IS… by Alexandra Black, Laura Buller, Emily Hoyle and Dr. Megan Todd is your go-to book for any questions you may have about feminism and its history. FEMINISM IS… starts with a foreword by Roxane Gay explaining feminism and how she became a feminist. Then, the book is divided into five sections, with each section containing articles about the different subsections of the topic such as “The Male Gaze” and “Family Values.” FEMINISM IS… contains the history behind each topic and the varying opinions of different feminists. The book also contains little biographies about well-known feminists such as Gloria Steinem, bell hooks and Malala Yousafzai.
FEMINISM IS… is a great book. Alexandra Black, Laura Buller, Emily Hoyle and Dr. Megan Todd created an incredible resource. It is like an encyclopedia that is solely focused on feminism and covers it from A to Z. The book carefully outlines the history of the many about feminism in a clear, concise way that most people will be able to understand. The book also does a great job not only in giving the history behind the issues but also explaining the issues and the complexity behind them.
My personal favorite sections of the book are the mini-biographies, the explanation of intersectionality and the emphasis on the importance of choice. The little biographies are very well done. I like how each biography goes with the section in the book that they’re in. They also manage to explain each woman very well in just a page. I also appreciate how the biographies cover a nice combination of both well-known feminists and feminists who are a little unheard of in today’s world. FEMINISM IS… also does a very good job on explaining intersectionality, which is important, as it is commonly misconceived. The book explains it in a simple easy way that practically anyone can understand. I also think that the book’s emphasis on choice is very important. What people today do not seem to understand is that feminism is all about having the right to choose from choosing how to dress to choosing how to act. FEMINISM IS… emphasizes that choice is the most important part of feminism, which is important for a novel about feminism.
FEMINISM IS… by Alexandra Black, Laura Buller, Emily Hoyle and Dr. Megan Todd is a great book that everyone should read. It is nice and short, so you don’t need to take a lot of time to read it. However, I would suggest reading the book in a group and discussing each section with those people. I feel that by doing so you can really get everything from this great book.
How can a book be both diverse in covering a subject yet simplistic you might ask. It can when it covers a large number of topic but does not give enough time and space to really cover any subject well. That's this book and I'm sad that I have to type that because I was hoping it would be so much more.
The book is good if you know almost nothing about feminism or only conservative tropes about feminism. There is some information about feminist thought and action over time but most is really focused on the late 20th and early 21st century. It lightly mentioned varied opinions among feminists but never gives category labels that would be very useful to anyone discussing feminism or wanting to do more research about the different social movements under the feminism umbrella. I personally find it very annoying that different groups and individuals have claimed the word "radical" and ignored the origins of Radical Feminism in the the late 1960s for example.
The issues covered in the book do touch about those around the world and among different groups of women (and men) but again the focus is really on white American feminist movements. There are 12 biographies of different feminists that show more variety than the text gives time.
The images are bold and very frequent, making me think of a tween book. Maybe that's the target audience? Younger people who are interested in learning more about feminism? This is a good start but it just scratches at the numerous subjects covered.
This is probably not a book I would have picked to read had I not received it as part of a book club subscription, but I wanted to read through it to see how appropriate it would be to recommend to the young people in my life. This book covers a wide variety of topics related to feminism on a very surface level, and while there are some articles I slightly disagree with, and others I wish conveyed a more nuanced viewpoint, this is still a good resource for those trying to familiarize themselves with these concepts for the first time. If nothing else, it’s a great springboard to further research on this topic, with its list of prominent feminists and other references.
I liked that this book gave readers a broad overview of feminism, including the history of the movement, discussion of key terms, and brief bios of key activists from around the world. At the back of the book there was a directory of key feminists and also a glossary, which makes this a great reference book for readers looking to access specific information. The target audience for this book was young adults and I think all the colorful photos and illustrations would appeal to these readers, but personally, the pages were too busy for my tastes.
Alexandra Black is a writer specialising in non-fiction, Laura Buller writes for younger readers, Emily Hoyle is a writer who has covered feminism and Dr Megan Todd is a lecturer in social science at the University of Central Lancashire. In this well structured introduction to feminism aimed at teens (introduced by TV presenter Gemma Cairney), they set out some of the key moments in feminist history and the main issues it’s tackling today.
It’s true that the scope of the book is broad. I loved though! It is like a very readable encyclopedia about feminism and all the areas it comprises. I think it’s a good book to start with if you want an overview of feminism. It also includes many other references to other books and feminists. I definitely finished this book knowing more and with other things to explore.
this book is really interesting and informative, i found that all the information in this book was super insightful! but it’s a introduction to feminism so there are no topics that really go in depth, but this book is still worth a read if you wanna start learning more about the history of feminism and different perspectives on topics relating to it !
Loved this book! This book gives a quick overview of feminist ideas and concerns! If you don't know much about feminism, this book is a brilliant start and if you're a feminist book reader, this book provides you with a really good wrap-up on most recent feminist hot topics!
Basic Information, nicely written. Could have definitely been longer and more structured ans detailed but great for an overall insight. The audiobook was ill made because at the end it just mentioned names and birth and death dates, I'm guessing there were pictures of the women.
Nothing wrong with this. Would be a GREAT intro. to younger people needing an intro. to the topic. I'm an old bird though, & can't be bothered to finish this since I'm already well-familiarized with this info. I'm passing it on to those who can benefit from it.
This was informative and I liked the graphics. Its formatting was better than a lot of other feminist-type books I've read recently. But, it started getting repetitive for a while. That's why I counted off two stars. Wish I would have had this book to read years ago though.
