3.5 stars A bit more language than the prior volumes, but still very cute.
Content/TW- 1 hot; 2 jeez, 1 dammit, 1 *ss, 1 screw up, 3 “thank/thank you God”, 2 god, 1 gah, 1 unfinished ‘son of a…’, Praying at a grave; A mention of a monk; A mention of reincarnation; A mention of someone who was bitten by a dog as a child; The cover shows a forehead kiss (?) & a special page at the beginning has them on a bed (blushing and her on top of him (like an accident?)); Hand holding, Nearness, Blushes, lots of blushes; she falls on top of him; an embrace; 1 cheek kiss, a forehead kiss (?), Mentions of a real kiss (not a peck) & him wanting her to give him a sign when she’s ready for it; a couple mentions of cheating; A couple mentions of crushes; Dating, dates, boyfriends/girlfriends, falling in love & such is the main focus & discussed often.
Updated Review 6/25/24: Compared to my original review, I feel I should have something "deep" to say, but I think this time around I'm just appreciating reading the story and seeing smaller things I didn't the first time.
The way Hotaru has subtle (and not-so-subtle) signs that Yao really makes her uncomfortable but yet Hananoi notices it and acts on her behalf. The way Hotaru cares so deeply for her friends. The way Hotaru looks up to her big sister so much. The way that Hananoi is willing to let go of Hotaru putting him first in the way he puts her first because he simply wants her in his life forever.
Plus, the dog chapter was so cute, especially with how Hotaru was feeling!
Another amazing volume for sure!
Original Review 7/20/23: Please forgive me for yelling this, but I just have to say this first…
I KNEW IT! I KNEW IT!!
Hananoi is NOT the red flag he appeared to be in the first volume!!!
While I won't deny that some of his actions brought on some nervous laughter, my heart has ached more and more for his character with each volume I've read. And with this volume specifically, we FINALLY get some of his backstory and my heart ached for him even MORE!
All of his actions up to this point make so much sense! I've had guesses of why he has said the things he has to Hotaru AND to other people, but I feel even with past guesses in previous reviews, I was not fully right. (I'm not sure if that is good or bad because his backstory just makes me sad.) Don't get me wrong! I LOVE Hotaru's journey of discovering love, but I HAVE to admit that I am hugely invested in Hananoi's story because I want this young man to find healing and wholeness. This gets stronger with each volume and feel it will continue to do so until I see that hope and wish for him fulfilled.
Obviously, that healing and wholeness seem to be in the form of our heroine, which isn't necessarily my favorite part (because girl-saves-boy isn't a personal favorite "trope" for me), but I am SO thankful she is in his life! I had to sort of laugh when she tells him "Thank you for all the happiness you have brought/bring me" because if she could only fully realize how much happiness SHE has brought to HIM. There is definitely a subtle shift in his overall demeanor and excited to see more of that.
One thing I really really loved about this volume is how our couple is 1.) Not only an official couple now (YAY!!), but 2.) How open they are with one another. Even though I'm a married woman who is definitely not in high school, I find their open communication inspiring. That doesn't mean they don't have some miscommunication or don't communicate sometimes, but seeing them really try to talk about things that aren't always the most comfortable things (due to events that have happened in their past), they still really give their all and try. I also especially love seeing them overcome personal obstacles in their internal dialogue. I hope these two never give up and keep moving forward together. <3
Definitely another excellent volume in this series! There are times (like when I was reading this volume actually LOL) when I want to let these volumes pile up and binge read, but once they come in the mail, I just want to start reading. LOL! This volume definitely reminded me why it is just too good to wait and let it pile up!
i really love this volume 🫶🏾 my babies are soo cute and adorable and seeing all their firsts have me squealing i also loved that hananoi’s character developed some more and we get to see why hes so intense in love. I believe he has severe abandonment issues and believes he should change himself and do everything in his power to keep the person and avoid them leaving him like his parents did. It makes his character so much more realistic and relatable and I also loved that even though we see the reasons why hes like this the manga doesn’t really ignore the problematic aspect of his actions and still acknowledge how his actions can be sometimes uncomfortable and intense. Another thing i love is the communication we love a couple that knows how to communicate <<<<<33333
I can see why Hananoi’s other relationships didn’t last long I think because Hotaku is so considerate and always thinking of others she doesn’t just take Hananoi’s actions as face value but really look deeper and see the underlying reason why he does certain things and its cause shes so understandable and communicative.
Im just really liking this series they’re just sooo cute together
I can't wait!! 😭🥹
Um-um-huuum! (me expressing my approval) In this volume, we get to know a little bit about Hananoi's past, which was something I think everyone was wondering about. Still, they gave just enough for us to come back in need for more (at least that was my very biased opinion). The scenes where Hananoi pets Hotaru (the dog) as well as consoles Hotaru Hinase were SO CUTE! And their matching rings were just as adorable. OMG, and how Hotaru ran into Hananoi's arms on his birthday! 🥰
I feel like every review I've done of this series has been of me talking about how bad I feel for Hananoi. Every new reveal about him breaks my heart even further. He's had such a sad and lonely childhood that leads to how he is today. Even though I wish he isn't so possessive and makes more of an effort to connect with others, I get why it's so hard for him.
...just wait till the 2nd to last page! You are gonna freak! It's ALL coming out, now! Hmm, do we now know why Hananoi's name is so familiar? Wow, what a revelation!!! But can he tell Hotaru, before anyone ELSE does? What a cliffhanger! Ok. *whew* ok *breathe slowly* ok. Just when I thought this couldn't get any more endearing, it does, and here's a warning, the last several pages are a real tear-jerker! In a GOOD way! You REALLY need to read this series. Art, so nice. Just elegant. Dialogue, so loving, so wonderful. Characters, believable, likeable, loveable, admirable, relatable, adorable.
Honestly I’m loving the story! I’m so glad we get to see Hananoi’s past and how he’s connected to Hotaru. I’m not sure how Hotaru will react when she finds out but let’s hope it all goes okay. I love how Hotaru is putting Hananoi first, and how it’s the first time in his life that’s someone‘s done that, being able to spend his birthday together is something very sweet! It was super funny seeing them meet Hotaru-chan (Yao-kun’s dog) and Hananoi getting all defensive. I’m really excited to see how their relationship continues!
The more I read this series the more I find it difficult to rate them less than five stars… it’s just so sweet to read and I’m having such a good moment seeing their relation grow it’s so cute ; w ;
A sweeter, softer volume with a darker side under the surface.
For fans of this series, I want you to know that I no longer believe Hananoi is destined to be an axe murderer. Morino-sensei gave us a peek underneath his hood, so to speak, and there are reasons why his engine creeps instead of idles. I feel sorry for him a little now. He was almost even likable in this volume, aside from the jealous, possessive stalker overtones he gives off. Oh no! I’m leaning towards axe murderer again!
Honestly, Hananoi is a mess, and poor Hotaru is blinded by love and fooled by his veneer. I just know that soon she will be scrambling to get out of the grave he’s digging for her. Yes, I kid, but the darker undertones of this story are real. Hananoi’s parent’s are flakes as they neglect their son, and he bears some untold trauma that makes him almost sociopathic. In contrast, Hotaru’s such a bright, angelic force in this series. I’m not sure what she sees in that kid, but if she didn’t beam as intensely as several suns every other page, I’d think I was drifting into a horror novel.
In this volume, our lovers blush bashfully, work together at Hotaru’s job, save the day with dog therapy, and blush some more. It’s cute.
This volume felt much more romantic than other volumes. Edward’s possessive. Sorry. Hananoi’s possessive bent is still dysfunctional, but there were more healthy moments between them in this volume than the previous three. I have greater hope for this series, though I do still scan the backgrounds for shovels and other red flags of doom.
It's a very slow progression, but Hotaru is learning what it means to be a girlfriend and what she wants out of her relationship with Hanananoi. It looks like Hanananoi may have known at least of Hotaru much sooner that we expected, though it's still unclear if his feelings for her go back that far as well or if they really did come to a head when Hotaru found him after his last break up. It seems like everyone is cheering for Hotaru's happiness though, which by extension currently means Hanananoi's happiness, though he still seems to confuse everyone given he's only friendly to Hotaru really (or so he claims). He has more than a few moments that could be seen as being a good friend on his own if not for his claims to the contrary and that he's only there for Hotaru. Perhaps they will both learn over time.

This is the last book of the series that I am going to read (as of now, maybe my mind will change but who knows). I started reading this because I wanted to watch the anime series, but I think I'll just go ahead and watch the anime. I find Hananoi-kun to be a bit toxic/problematic. From what I've read so far, his relationship with Hotaru isn't problematic, but he's the problematic character and I don't think it'll change as far as the story goes. It's frustrating to read about him because I don't think the story will address his problematic nature because at the root of it all, it's a love story. Maybe it does, but I don't feel compelled enough to continue on with the series, even if the series is a fast one to read.
I'm so glad I continued with this series despite some questionable bits in the beginning. As I hoped, Hananoi has continued to grow and change from the black and white thinking he had in the first few volumes. I love the realizations he came to on his birthday and his joy in just being with Hotaru even if he isn't always the first thing to come in her life. We love to see that growth!
