Fifteen-year-old Mayten loves training as a tree singer, an esteemed position among her clan. But when she feels pain coming from the trees, she finds herself on an unexpected quest, one so dangerous she might never return home.

Tumbled People: Deconstructing and Reconstructing your faith is selling well. If you're going through a time of faith discouragement, for instance leaving the evangelical world because of their alignment with power and privilege, instead of the poor and marginalized. You might find solace and hope in this book.
"Today we call forth nine more friends to join us as we serve. / To bring their gifts as offerings and strengthen us with nerve. / All the gifts are needed here we; honor every one. / Come forth you nine and join us now, your calling time has come."

This was a super good middle grade, coming-of-age book! The cover is literally SO BEAUTIFUL, the characters are fun and diverse, the setting is vibrant and unique, and the writing is both simple and elegant.
Basically, everyone in Mayten's clan has a particular gift or "calling" that most of them figure out by the time they're 15-years-old. Mayten's family have always been Singers (her last name is Singer, too!) so her mother sings to plants and trees to help them grow and thrive, her father sings to wheat and grain in the same fashion, her sister is just a singer of history and stories, etc. There's also Hunters, Healers, Travelers, and so forth. I loved how it's like each of them has a special gift given to them by God and God is called the "Great Singer" (and the "Great Healer," the "Great Hunter," and the "Great Traveler" as well) showing that ultimately, all our talents and gifts are from Him and He was the original Creator in the beginning.
Mayten was a delightful character. She was smart and resourceful but also full of humility. The struggles she goes fights throughout the book (e.g. loneliness, doubt, fear, resentment, jealousy), are very real struggles that most teens have. Her journey from being a simple farm girl who hasn't known anything beyond her home and little village to the mature and brave girl at the end of the story was amazing. I also really liked how she fought to control her emotions (like her annoyance at Adven) and tried to see past that.
This book emphasized the strength and bonds of family and of friends. There was a clear fight between good and evil and it was kind of scary how people could end up using their God-given gifts for harm and eventually for evil just like a certain someone did. This is true in real life as well, of course, so definitely some really deep and insightful themes there. One thing I thought was a bit weird was like being "one" with everything that almost border on Hinduism beliefs. But I'm sure the author just meant it like respecting nature and letting it calm you and being a part of the beauty of it all, though. :)
There was no coarse language at all (at least I don't remember there being any) and some minimal romance between some characters (not saying who!). There was one brief scene of violence, blood, and gore that may be disturbing to younger readers and someone the MC knew was attacked and severely injured. Birth of a stillborn baby was mentioned as a memory but only briefly.
Would recommend!
Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are completely my own and I was not required to leave a positive review.
I am so excited about this book! I've been working on it for four years and it is my favorite. I have a great love of trees and if you share that you will enjoy this part of it too. There is a quest story here, an adventure, it's fantasy (but no dragons). It's been read by a lot of betas who love it so I can't wait for the Valentines release date. You must give it a try.

~I'd like to thank the wonderful author for sending me a free copy in exchange for my honest review!~ wow... Ahhh!!! *fangirl scream* Where do I begin? This is like an adventure novel with Harry Potter vibes. I mean, WHO CAN SAY NO TO THAT?! The ending was the best part. The grand finale (or the secret villain) was so unexpected, and the ending was sort of a happily-ever-after-but-there's-going-to-be-sequel feel, which I really loved. The characters were great, AND, the main character wasn't the stereotypical I-WANT-TO-GO-ON-A-QUEST!!!! type of character. Instead, she was really hesitant, and then, throughout the novel... (sorry, no spoilers! XD) Anyway, this was an awesome book, and I'm really looking forward to reading more books from this author! ~Full Review To Come~
THE WISHING SHELF BOOK AWARDS 8th January, 2021 TITLE: Tree Singer AUTHOR: Jacci Turner Star Rating: 5
‘A cleverly plotted fantasy populated with unique and captivating characters. Highly recommended!’ The Wishing Shelf
REVIEW Jacci Turner, it seems, is a talented author. This the second book I have enjoyed my her; the first was Cracker which I liked a lot. Similar to that book, Tree Singer is a powerful, character-led story that middle grade/young adults will very much enjoy. The clever plot is packed full of twists and turns and there's a strong environmental message I think many young people will ‘get’. This is a story set in a complex, well thought-out fantasy world. Mayten, very much the hero of the story, is a tree singer, and she is able to talk, or ‘feel’, what trees are saying. And, in chapter one, the reader discovers the trees are not happy. Another important character is Tray who wants to be a Traveler and explore beyond the village and the clan they call home. From the opening – and very powerfully written – first chapter, this is a compelling story. The plot is cleverly constructed, the setting is splendidly described, the pacing is, for the most part, spot on – and the characters! Wow! They deliver BIG TIME! Mayten is particularly interesting. She’s very sweet, very caring and very, VERY likeable. In a way, the book is in two parts. In the first part, it's very character-led and the author works hard helping the reader to understand the setting and the way the world works. Then, in the second part, it’s plot-led culminating in a gripping ending. So, who will enjoy this book? To be honest, pretty much everybody. Lovers of fantasy adventure, thrillers and, of course, trees, will find lots in here to enjoy. For me, the best part was the writing style. This author is excellent at giving readers what they want and, if she’s not snapped up by a big publisher soon, it would be a literary crime. Enjoy!

A good author.” Male reader, aged 15 “The protagonist is interesting to follow. She´s often a bit confused – just like me! The community she is living in is well-described and interesting. I´d like to be a tree singer like Mayten!” Female reader, aged 16 “If you like trees, you´ll love this novel. It was interesting how listening was so important to the story. In most novels, it´s all about the hero telling and not listening at all.” Male reader, aged 14 “I´m now watching out for book two!” Girl aged 13
To Sum It Up: ‘A captivating YA novel with strong characterisation. A FINALIST and highly recommended!’ The Wishing Shelf Book Awards
I was one of the lucky winners of a copy of local author, Jacci Turner’s latest book. Entering those Goodreads contests does pay of now and then! In this YA fantasy, Mayten is a fifteen-year-old adolescent who has been training for her calling as a Tree Singer. Her mother is a legendary Tree Singer—one who can communicate with trees and other living things. Mayten is literally and figuratively on the brink. Author Turner builds a world that seems like an alternative to our own. History and cultures have combined and recombined to create a rich and diverse society, with each person, each family fulfilling necessary roles. When Mayten and her two closest friends—Cather, a Healer and Tray, a Traveler--stand ready to assume their adult roles, they are unexpectedly sent on a quest to save their dying forest. Mayten feels ambushed and resentful toward both her friends and her family who knew this was coming before she did. Not a good way to start off on a quest. But the trees are dying and no one knows why. The team sets off to meet the king, facing death, danger, and mystery along the way. The still adolescent Mayten’s voice and emotions ring true as she learns to use and channel her profound gifts. She is a believable and sympathetic heroine as she learns about the darkness that is destroying the world. The story has a mystical and spiritual feel that reminded me of another story about our relationship to trees, The Overstory. And because of the strength of Mayten’s connection with her family—despite her frustrations and anger--I believe young people, their parents, and grandparents would enjoy reading this book. Perhaps together. Recommend.
This serene fantasy is the perfect blend of adventure, suspense, coming of age, and exploring the balance of the ecosystem in a beautiful land where people strive to feel grounded to the earth and to live in balance with everyone and everything around them. I couldn't stop reading and was pleasantly surprised by the originality of the characters and universe. I hope there's a sequel! I need more!
It is a GOOD day when a book I randomly came across on Instagram ends up blowing my mind. I actually got this book a few months ago when I first saw it, and it entered a place in my tbr pile which is, needless to say, massive! So I did not get around to reading it until a few months later, and wow I wish I had read this earlier because it is just very beautiful. It’s about a 15 year old girl named Mayten who is training to be a Tree Singer, which is a person who can talk to trees and more. But the forest Mayten lives in with her friends is dying and they have to save it. There’s so much here about our own world, and reading this book about one girl’s home dying away makes me both sad and inspired. Sad because there are so many realistic messages about Earth and how even now we are contributing to some harm, and inspired because of how important it is to take care of the living things around us, including our own planet. I really like reading books with younger protagonists and so Mayten was very refreshing. She’s a great character who was believable in her relationships with her friends and parents and the bigger relationship to the world around her. This book has so much - magic, mystery, high stakes, real themes, great characters...each and every day, when I think my respect for indie authors can reach no greater heights, it does. Wow. Consensus: 5/5

When a young tree singer is assigned to a team to travel to aid the King, she is forced to take on new challenges before she feels she is ready. Jacci Turner has built a well-defined fantasy society with enough description to immerse the reader into it without it being too complicated. Maytan, her main character, is engaging and reflects the concerns any young person might have as they start the first phases of her adult life. This is a well-crafted coming-of-age story that will entertain and intrigue young readers as it connects them with the character's struggles and successes. I received an arc copy of this book and loved the story!
I received this book through a Goodreads giveaway!
I rather enjoyed this book. The world was immersive and entertaining. I would have loved to see a map of the island where they lived and where all the clans lived. There was adventure, action, and a huge family connection.
I will say I was able to see what was going to happen in the end, but it could have been an easy detail to miss.
I would love to see more books from the perspective of others and their gifts!
An adventure worth taking with these gifted young ones
The characters, their relationships and adventures - all make for a great read. Young and old alike will be captivated by this thoughtful story that moves at a good pace. It is a 5 star for me.
Some books transport you to another world, not just through magic or fantasy but through the sheer beauty of their storytelling. Tree Singer by Jacci Turner is one of those books. A captivating, eco-fantasy novel that weaves together themes of nature, connection, and self-discovery.
The story follows Mayten, a young girl with a rare and powerful gift: the ability to communicate with trees through song. In a world where nature is both revered and threatened, she embarks on a journey that challenges her understanding of her abilities, her place in society, and the deep-rooted connection between humans and the natural world. Along the way, she encounters allies and enemies, faces difficult choices, and ultimately learns the true cost of power and responsibility.
Turner crafts a lush, immersive setting where nature feels alive in every sense. The descriptions of the forests, the singing trees, and the energy they hold are nothing short of mesmerizing. The concept of singing to trees is beautifully executed, blending fantasy with an almost spiritual reverence for nature.
Tree Singer is a lyrical, heartfelt novel that carries a meaningful environmental message about the importance of respecting and protecting the natural world.
This book is beyond AMAZING. It literally took me back to how I felt the first time I opened up a book and fell in love with reading. Reading it you will feel like how it feels to fall asleep listening to raindrops on a tin roof or if you were wrapped up in a blanket on a super snowy day, drinking hot chocolate and reading your favorite book. The best description is that it’s a hug in book format.
The writing is phenomenal. The Magic’s system and world Jacci built is so refreshing from all the other fantasy books I’ve been reading. And the CHARACTERS…. The characters have to be some of the most well developed book characters I’ve ever came across. They literally feel like real people. The whole time you’re reading this book you feel like you’re right there with them.
I cannot express how much I loved this book. It will forever have a place in my heart. It is a book that I will find myself coming back to over and over again.
This was a great book! Good story line and an easy and quick read. Borrowed this book from a friend that is named in the back of the book by the author. Thanks for the recommendation Michael! I could see this story getting a book two!
The cover of this book is gorgeous and it's my only regret from not having gotten a print copy. Anyway, I listened to the audiobook for this one, and I was treated to a wonderful story — and Barbara Bond is a fantastic narrator! Her narration voice is great and she does voices for the characters too. It was such a delight to go on a quest with Mayten and her friends while I cooked and did the dishes as I felt like I was right there with them. And did I mention this book has singing? Which really pops in the audiobook, and something I particularly appreciate as a singer myself.
This book has a good quest story, a fun cast, and a fascinating world that isn't overly complicated and even echoes our own in some striking ways. I loved Mayten as a heroine and I really liked how she didn't really want to go on a quest when they started, but grew so much from there. The story also touches on many relatable topics such as friendship, family, our relationship with nature, and finding one's place and voice in the world. It's a book that I think will entertain young and older readers alike, especially if you like audiobooks!
First I would like to state that I received this book through the Goodreads giveaway in exchange for an honest review. I would like to thank the author for giving me this opportunity and honor in being able to read this book. When I received this book I began reading it at once. I really enjoy the authors writing style, pulls you into the book from the very beginning and you don't want to put the book down. It kept me on the edge of my seat reading from cover to cover. All the characters are very well portrayed though out. When you are finished you wish you weren't. A most wonderful read and I highly recommend this book
Tree Singer is a welcomed escape into a whimsical world filled with adventure, magic, and mystery. Captivated by the first page, I couldn't put the book down and finished it within just a few days! The story line kept me on the edge of my seat, and I felt so connected to the characters that I found myself thinking about them long after I closed the book. Tree Singer is a wonderful coming of age journey that I would highly recommend for anyone who is looking for a break from the mundane of every day life and ready to dive into a fantastical new world!
I had received this book from a Goodreads giveaway.
From the first chapter to the last you are swept away into the characters. Mayten is the lead female and she must journey with her friends and a team leader who hates her to figure out why the trees are dying. With her magical powers as a singer (a person who communicates with the trees) she must do everythign she can to save the trees and stop the person involved. Jacci Turner paints a beautiful story that I was swept away in. I loved the characters, I loved the simple but plot twisting moments. It was beautiful. I recommend this story!
A captivating fantasy story full of adventure, wisdom and humor. It depicts the struggles of being a teenager and the unique rite of passage each has to face to become a grown-up person. It will invite you to look into your true-self, purpose and meaning in a simple story-like way. And maybe how to get there. Every page took me as I travel with these interesting and powerful characters. A story of family, friendship and communion.
Although I am not a young adult, I enjoyed this book immensely. I love to read books with strong female characters, and Mayten was a great one! This beautifully written coming of age tale had many levels. I particularly liked the message of the need to protect our environment. I think this is an important book for readers of all ages, and I encourage you all to read it!
A delightful, fun, and easy to read story. Well-crafted and very enjoyable. As a girl, I loved to climb trees, and often thought that I could hear them "communicate" when the wind blew through the tree tops. So I very much related to this story. Also, some thoughtful elements about first appearances and hidden reasons why we react to others in a certain way.
ree Singer by Jacci Turner weaves a captivating tale of nature, magic, and a young girl's unexpected rise to heroism. Fifteen-year-old Mayten is a compelling protagonist, full of heart and determination. Her connection to the trees is beautifully portrayed, and the concept of "tree singing" is both unique and enchanting.
As Mayten's world begins to unravel with the pain she senses in the forest, the story picks up pace and pulls readers into a quest filled with danger, betrayal, and ancient evil. Despite her incomplete training, Mayten’s bravery and growth are inspiring, making her journey emotionally resonant and suspenseful.
The world-building is rich, and the themes of environmental stewardship, trust, and inner strength are thoughtfully explored. While some secondary characters could have used a bit more depth, and a few plot points felt slightly rushed, the overall story remains engaging and satisfying.
Perfect for fans of YA fantasy who enjoy strong female leads and nature-based magic. Tree Singer is a lyrical and exciting adventure that leaves you rooting for both the heroine and the forest she fights to protect.
'Tree Singer' by Jacci Turner is an engaging fantasy YA read. Following 15-year-old Mayten Singer, she must go on a quest to save the trees with her two best friends, a cheerful woodsman, and a Traveler who seems to hate her. The raw, natural, elemental energy (it isn't really magic) in the story appealed to me, how the characters connect to certain aspects of nature, such as trees, stars, or other plants.
This is a book for fans of the fantasy genre, particularly for those who are fans of 'The Inheritance Cycle', and 'Harry Potter', as well as for nature-lovers, who will certainly empathize with Mayten's connection to the trees.
This is a book to be read on a lazy weekend, outside underneath your favorite tree. Maybe after reading it you, too, will be more aware of how intelligent trees really are.
I only wish that it had been longer, so that I could still be reading it, and that a sequel is soon in the works!
This is a beautiful book. The world Turner has created is both charming and magical—so vivid that I found myself wishing I could step into it. I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator's performance was exceptional. They sang the songs of the village, which added a rich layer of depth and emotion to the story.
In this world, every villager has a calling—a magical gift that determines their role in the community. There are tree singers who commune with the forest, star singers, healers, and many others with unique talents. It’s an idyllic place, full of wonder and harmony.
But beneath the surface, something is wrong. Their peaceful world is under threat, and a group of gifted individuals must set out on a journey to protect it. Along the way, we experience themes of found family, coming of age, and the deep sacredness of nature.
This story is tender, immersive, and full of heart. If you enjoy lyrical fantasy with a strong sense of community and nature, you’ll find yourself enchanted.
A sweet book, like poetry and prose… like wind through the trees… a cool breeze on your face on a hot day… walking through a forest trying to stick to the shade. ☀️ 🌳
This book was fantastic! Mayten a young girl goes on a quest with 2 of her friends, 2 adults (one she does not get along with), and her dog. In this story, we experience a little bit of young love, the loss of someone we’ve come to like, and a plot twist you won’t see coming! Can’t wait to read book 2!
This is a good book for middle-grade kids who like a fantasy story with plenty of teenage friendship/relationship/family drama, and some action and suspense. It’s a quick read that doesn’t spend too much time on any one scene.
I listened to this book on Audible not the Kindle edition so my experience is just a little different. The narrator was really good and kept the story moving a a nice pace. I listened all the way through and into the morning because I wanted to find out what happened next. That would translate into, I couldn't put it down. The story is a fantasy, coming-of-age, middle to high school age story. The premise is very cool. I mean who wouldn't want to be able to commune with 200 year old trees.
There are other items I should mention but you will just have to read about the quest to save the forest and try to ignore all the teenage anst. Very realistically portrayed by the way but I have lived through my own, my children's and now dealing with my grandchildren's. I do love that it almost all works out in the end.
