3.25 Stars. I’m a bit on the fence with this one. I think it was a solid, slightly above average story, but I didn’t really enjoy it like I wanted to. This is my third book read by Scott, and I have always liked her writing style. Her books flow well and they just have a good reading feel to them. However, I don’t know why but I can’t get past only liking her writing to actually really connecting to her story choices, characters, or both.
I keep reading Scott in hopes that her good writing style will eventually mesh with a storyline that I just love, since I feel like she has the potential for a book that will be a big hit among WLW readers. I think the first strike this book had against something I would love, was a trope I’m not a huge fan of. This is a trope that is not often mentioned in reading challenges and fan’s favorites, but it’s pretty common in WLW romance, no strings attached. The whole “we can be together but it is just for fun, so it isn’t serious and we’ll never actually fall in love.” Yeah, right. I’m about 50/50 on this trope. Sometimes it is almost comical seeing characters do just about anything to deny how hard they have fallen in love, and it can end up pretty sweet. But other times the characters will be such saboteurs to anything meaningful that it is almost a little depressing. Unfortunately, this book was more the ladder and I never connected to the characters and their self-destructing ways.
Another issue I had was not just the characters’ actions, but the characters as a whole. While both characters were reasonably likeable, at least at times, I had trouble caring about them. While they were late 20’s early 30’s, at times I felt they were even younger. As other reviewers have mentioned, this book had a lot of drinking and even random odd cigarette smoking. Half the time I felt like the characters were just of age and enjoying that freedom of being able to drink legally anytime. And then other times I felt like the characters were in their 50’s or 60’s, because of how jaded they were from past relationships. Yes, every relationship that ends unexpectedly hurts, and does for way longer than should be possible, but these characters were acting like the possibility to love ends at the age of 30.
In the end this was not a story for my personal tastes, but even saying that, I still read every page and felt the book flowed well because of Scott’s good writing. I think if someone could connect to these characters more than I did, they might like this book much more. I’m still going to keep reading Scott since I like her writing style and I believe eventually they will be a book that really clicks for me.

“On the Rocks” is an interesting one-night stand to relationship romance. It started off okay but, in the end, I couldn’t really connect with either of the characters or the story.
Alex and Lennon have both recently been through breakups when they meet in a bar one night. They meet at a bar one night and have a one-night stand. Afterwards, they continue running into each other and decide to have a friends-with-benefits type of situation even though they aren’t really friends.
I think my main issue with this was that both characters spent most of the time stuck in their own heads. They were each consumed with their past breakups and not being ready for a new relationship. There was a lot of back and forth about what they were each doing and which lines they could and couldn’t cross. They also were still so hurt and down about their previous relationships that I never really got to see a positive side to either one. I didn’t see how Alex or Lennon were in a place where they would be ready for a new relationship.
On top of these struggles, they also both spent a lot of time drinking. It didn’t matter the time of day or if they were alone or with other people, they were constantly drinking alcohol. Neither seemed ready for anything relationship wise as far as I could tell. They did have outstanding chemistry together but emotionally I couldn’t see that they were ready for anything other than physical. So, it’s hard to root for a romance if you don’t believe in it.
The last third was better because Lennon seemed to have more of a breakthrough and I did see how she was starting to heal and move forward. However, it was a bit too late for me to buy into her relationship with Alex. Also, I never saw anything similar with Alex.
This was my first Riley Scott book and while it wasn’t for me, it was well written. I’ll be reading more from her in the future in the hopes I can connect to another storyline better.

Another well-written story by Riley Scott that I could not connect with. Her main characters always annoy me somehow, and unfortunately it happened again here. I find Lennon and Alex quite frustrating and too often simply unlikable. Their kind of push-pull romance left me quite uninterested. Drinking, partying, one-night stands, Tinder hookups... I just do not care about that too. Even Alex's favorite scent, patchouli, is repugnant to me and it bothers me a lot whenever I smell it or even just think of it.
This all made reading On the Rocks quite an exhausting experience for me. The author's writing is technically very good but her plot and character choices are just not my cup of tea.

I read this book a couple of days ago and I still don’t really quite know what to say with regards to reviewing it. It has it’s good moments, but it just didn’t work for me.
A one-night stand to relationship romance, Lennon and Alex meet after Alex comes into town following a break-up. Lennon is also looking for a mindless hook-up following a break-up of her own.
There were aspects of both characters that I found interesting. How Alex is depicted with regards to her art and her career was intriguing to me, but otherwise, I didn’t particularly connect with her as a character. I connected more with Lennon, and I liked her personal growth through the story.
Scott is clearly an experienced, talented writer, and whilst I haven’t read any of her previous work I was excited to read this. However, I’m not a big fan of reading about alcohol, and it’s something that’s very prevalent in the narrative here. I’ve read novels previously about bar owners and the like that haven’t contained as much detail about drinking as this one did so I was caught a little unawares. I would say however that as this is such a personal thing about why I couldn’t enjoy this more - others may feel very differently about the book.

Classic one-night-stand to love trope.
If you enjoy the one-night-stand to love trope, try this one for the chemistry because I think Scott nailed those parts. The exchanges and hook-ups between Lennox and Alex at the bars and in the bedroom? They were definitely sexy.
But I don’t think this book has anything more to offer than that. There isn't anything special about it. It is a storyline that has been rehashed so many times about people becoming so afraid of falling in love after experiencing a breakup. And in this one, that happened to both MCs, so both of them kinda go in to the stubborn “should I, should I not’ mode. But at least the physical side of the relationship keeps happening so I can at least enjoy those parts.

by Riley Scott is a well-written, rebound/second-chance romance that I was really looking forward to. I did enjoy the story overall, but I also have some mixed feelings about the tale.
This is the story of Lennon Willis and Alex Daniels. Their first meeting ends up being what the two think is a one night stand. Both women are recovering from recent heartbreak and have no desire to start a new relationship with anyone. The problem is they can’t deny the chemistry that exists between them, and they seem to be constantly running into each other. Finally they decide on a no-strings-attached/friends-with-benefits affair. Yeah…we all know how well that’s going to work out.
The premise of this story is good. The setting of the book is perfect for the two characters. A beach town on the Alabama/Florida border works for bar owner Lennon and artist Alex. I must also mention the absolutely stunning and eye-catching cover to this novel. It really draws the potential reader to the book. My problem with the story involves the characters. I connected with most of them, but I had trouble connecting with Lennon. The problem with this is, Lennon is the main character, and we see a lot of the story through her. I understand this is an angst filled tale, but Lennon needed to grow a little faster in the story than she did.
As I said above, this is a well-written novel, and other than that one character, I really enjoyed the story. I’m giving this a 3.5 star rating, and will be looking for more from this author.

I've had a full day to process how I feel about this book and I still can't really describe it.
Alex and Lennon are both healing from a disastrous breakup. Alex's breakup happened a couple of days ago and she just packed up her life in California and drove to Florida. Lennon's relationship ended a year or a couple of months earlier (I'm unclear on this), she is stuck in her spiral of self-doubt and depression, but she puts on a brave face for everyone only looking at the surface. When the two meet in a bar and have a fantastic hook-up, they agree it's just for the one time, but when they happen to meet again in Lennon's bar the one-time-no-strings-attached thing goes right out of the window.
The characters come up with so many problems and roadblocks and I guess that's the thing with depression, but that doesn't really get addressed until you are well into the 70% of the book. So it just seems like this is their typical behaviour and they are just too attached to their superficial life of lots of drinking and partying. Speaking of, for characters around 30 I would expect a little more than drinking as much as they do and the never-ending mentions of menthol cigarettes (why?) and patchouli. It seems weird and out of place, I think the author is going for some sensory writing, but these aren't the things I'd select to write about... I do like all the music references in this book and the playlist added in the back. And who knows I might even try some of the recipes as well, but not in the morning like these crazy characters. I had a hard time getting into this story, I think it has to do with all the drinking and how the relationship is fast and loose and just a little unsettling for me. I liked neither of the characters but got around to liking Lennon a bit after the 70% mark where she starts working on herself. If the story would have been more like the last 30% I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more.

Mixed Feelings
Bar owner Lennon thought she was with Ms Right but she had other feelings and left. She’s hurting and has sworn off relationships. Alex is an artist who as living in California until she caught her fiancée with another woman in their bed. Now she’s in Florida. When Lennon and Alex meet, sparks fly and soon they find themselves in bed. When they keep running into each other, a one night stand becomes more, but casual as they are working through their heartaches and other issues… that would be fine, if they could only keep it casual…
I liked the writing style of this book. It was technically flawless and well written. I liked the characters and the story, for the most part. I liked watching the pair explore their feelings and get to know each other better. I thought they were cute together and were a good couple. I did get a little tired of Lennon’s self-doubts and the way she pulled Alex to her then pushed her away, the kept doing it. I was glad when she finally managed to get her stuff together so I could get my Happily Ever After. The tale dragged on a bit and felt slow in places but for the most part it was pretty good. Its not a book I will read again, but I was glad I read it.

It was really really painfully hard for me to finish this book, it’s not my type of read.
In this book we meet Lennon and Alex, both have burned by past relationships. Alex moves and ends up having a one night stand with Lennox at her new location- the two fall into back and forth “are we gonna happen or not” type of situation.
At some point you just get tired of reading the whole hot and cold after break up and trust issues storyline and unfortunately in this book Riley Scott exhausted that line. Now I must say the writing is really good and there is the chemistry between them but there’s really nothing special or something I haven’t read to this plot. It’s a really another basic plot, girl finds girl cheating leaves and happens to move on with another girl who’s also broken from a relationship and they both swear they’re not looking for a relationship
Something that irked me in this was their friend’s reaction to their relationship, at one point Grant described it as passionate but dangerous god alone knows why because it was a pretty simple relationship. Described as chaos when it was just two untrusting commitment fearing characters.

Alex and Lennon have been hurt and aren’t looking for anything. Alex moves to Florida in a new town after catching her finance cheating she a artist who sells her paintings at different galleries. Lennon own one of the hottest bar in town she still hurting over her relationship.
Alex and Lennon meets have a incredible one nightstand that neither can forget. As they get to know each other they both are hesitant to starts something because they both been hurt and don’t want this to be a mistake.
This was a good read the MC have great chemistry saw both POV as to wether they make a good couple or not the supporting cast was good even if they thought it was too soon.
Love the description of drinks I might try make it.

Two wayward souls seek comfort in each other physically while trying to overcome their individual emotional heartbreak. As much as attachment is the furthest thing from both of their minds, they are inexplicably drawn to each other. The only problem, neither of them seem to be able to get out to their own heads.
If I were to describe this book in one word, I would say self-destructive. Being a type A personality I found myself bugged by the negative and unnecessary cyclical thoughts and had a hard time identifying with the main characters. They were both very likable, but I just wanted to yell at both of them for fabricating issues unnecessarily. The author did a good job with sensory imaging, although I’m not sure the heavy dose of unhealthy drinking, and way too many references to menthol cigarettes and patchouli were the images i would have gone for myself.

This is a story about moving on with life, even though that giving to someone else isn't easy task.
Loved both characters and their attempt to build life from ground up emotionally.
Sometimes you aren't sure if being alone is such a good idea. Sometimes it's better to be with the one person who makes you happy.

Alex flees from California to Perdido Key Florida. when her fiancé cheated on her. She meets Lennon at a bar while having a drink, They strike up a conversation which led to them having a one night stand. Lennon is also mending a broken heat for over a year and has trust issues. Without giving too much away, Perdido is a small town so they kept running into each other and eventually decided to be friends with benefit with no strings attached. Both characters had amazing chemistry. Lennon was a bit complex while Alex was more free spirited and outspoken. I enjoyed the book. I would recommend, 4 stars.

What do you do when you potentially meet "the one" but at the wrong time? Alex Daniels breaks her engagement and moves across country to Florida after catching her fiancé cheating. In her new town she hooks up with Lennon Willis at a bar and they share a passionate evening. Lennon is still broken up about her last relationship and isn't looking for anything longer than one night. Alex is an artist and sets to selling her work in local galleries. Lennon owns one of the hottest local bars. The town isn't large and their paths keep crossing.
This is a book where the main characters are both likable. They both know they enjoy each other but they have been recently hurt and don't want to rebound into a mistake. There is a lot of resetting of rules and self analyzing as these two try and figure out if they have what it takes to be a couple. Lennon has a harder time trusting she is worthy of love. Family and friends don't help the situation as they are concerned it is too soon as well. This was an interesting read, from an unusual angle.
I don't drink alcohol so a lot of the bar specialty drinks and descriptions were lost on me. But I did enjoy looking at bonus drink recipes at the back of the book. This is a typical story in which two women damaged by past relationships refuse to admit that they can re-establish a serious romantic relationship with another woman. So they start their affair as something superficial but all the signs imply that it is not as trivial as they think, for either. We see it, they don’t.
They insist on the irrelevance of their encounters, but continue to coincide, casually or intentionally, over and over again. Of course, they do not live in a big city, the odds of meeting by chance are high enough, but still.
And in between their encounters we discover the past relationships of the two women, quite indirectly and little by little, those that have left them somehow disillusioned with love.
It goes without saying that they are both outrageously attractive, young, successful and talented.
However, this story is still interesting despite its typicality or lack of originality.

Both Lennon and Alex are reeling from heartbreak, so a chance hook-up has them feeling all the fire and forgetting all their past pain. In the bright light of day however, getting past their baggage turns out to be a little harder, but theres something the two women see in each other that keeps them on a journey together.
The concept of this story was really good and the storyline kept me reading so I could know what happened. The setting was very vibrant and well described as well. However, while the characters on their own interesting, I didn't really get a feel for them together, I didn't feel the chemistry. This took a lot of the enjoyment out of the book for me but I was still happy to read to the end to know how they ended up. This was my first book by this author and I look forward to see more from this author.

This was an ok book for me. Both characters were hurt in the past and try to move on. It did not make my eyes shine.
There is a time in the narrative when Lennon is fighting her inner demons and my impression is that the book focused so much on this part that Alex was forgotten by the narrative. If you really try a literary interpretation you may say that as Lennon was going deep within herself the book went for that, but my feeling is that Alex was just forgotten. Until that point the book was well balanced when showing the characters... I missed Alex!

Whew, both of these characters spent a loooooot of time in their heads and on their hangups. Yeah, that's a staple of romance in some respects, but it definitely impacted this one here and not for the better. There was also a ton of drinking and smoking that made this feel like an older book; I had to go back and double check the publish date several times. Overall, I'd read another Riley Scott book, because this was well-written and I'd like to see her knock it out of the park.

This is a great easy read. I love how the characters grow, and it’s not for one another, they grow for themselves and I love that message.
